3:16

3:16s

There is no doubt about it, all the verses of the Bible are important or they wouldn’t be there. However, some verses stand out more than other ones.

Probably the most famous one is John 3:16

John 3:16, “For God so greatly loved (dearly prized) the world that He (even) gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.”

Similarily, with the various 3:16s, that is, the Scriptures found in chapter 3, and verse 16 in various books of the Bible.

The reference system of the chapter and verse divisions were added to the Bible for the sake of convenience and as an aid to quickly locating the Scriptures.

Stephen Langton put the modern chapter divisions into place around A.D. 1227. The Wycliffe English Bible of 1382 was the first Bible to use this chapter pattern.

They were then inserted into Greek manuscripts of the New Testament in the 16th century. Robert Estienne (Robert Stephanus) was the first to number the verses within each chapter, his verse numbers entering printed editions in 1551 (New Testament) and 1571 (Hebrew Bible).

Looking through the following list, John 3:16 is far from being the only interesting and important verse and while there are some that seem to leave us wondering slightly… for example those in Kings/Chronicles; the overall list is an effective, if indirect, summary of the message of the Bible.
