Why A Threshing Floor?

Why was a Threshing Floor so important?

In the scriptures there are stories that tell us of David and Ruth and Boaz and the threshing floor but what is the significance and does it have any meaning to us today?

This page is to amplify our understanding having read the reference to it in previous posts.

Strong’s Hebrew: 1637. גֹּ֫רֶן (goren) — threshing floor

This word (goren) can mean any open area with a smooth floor as a barn floor, corn floor threshing floor. goren, go’‑ren, Hebrew 1637 ; from an unused root meaning to smooth ; a threshing‑floor (as made even); by analogy any open area :‑ (barn, corn, threshing‑) floor , (threshing‑, void) place.

The threshing floor goes back a long way to the time of Moses. God told the people of Israel that he had already chosen a place for his dwelling place in the Promised Land, long before they’d even got there:

“You are to seek only the place Adonai your God chooses from all your tribes to put His Name to dwell—there you will come.” (Deuteronomy 12:5)

At this time the location was not specific but God had decided where it would be before the Israelites got to Canaan/the Promised Land.

If we look in Genesis 21 we can see God had put his prophetic mark on His chosen location because it was the place where God told Abraham he was to sacrifice Isaac – mount Moriah.

מוֹרִיָּה‎‎  Moriyyah

pronounced: Mo’ree’yah

The mount of God’s bitterness.

ציון

: צִיּוֹן / ‎ Ṣîyōn, also variously transliterated Sion, Tzion, Tsion, Tsiyyon) is a place name in the Hebrew Bible used as a synonym for Jerusalem as well as for the Land of Israel as a whole (see Names of Jerusalem).

Zion, Tzion (ציון), can be translated as indication or marking and they chose to spell the name Zion identical to the Hebrew word ציון ( sayon) either meaning place of dryness or sign post.

Zion in fact means marked.

God had this place marked but how did the children of Israel know where it was?

To answer this we can look into the life and times of David recorded for us in 2 Samuel 24:15-16.

David was in the middle of a plague  which had broken out against Israel,

So Adonai sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning until the appointed time, so that 70,000 men of the people died from Dan to Beersheba. When the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, Adonai relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Now withdraw your hand.” The angel of Adonai was then by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”

and there was only one way to stop it:

”So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for 50 shekels of silver. Then David built there an altar to Adonai, and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. So Adonai was moved by prayer of entreaty for the land, and restrained the plague from Israel.

2 Samuel 24:18-25

King David bought that land under the instruction of God, and it was on that site that the first temple was built.  Later the second Temple was also built , today, the Dome of the Rock stands in its place.

Davids reason for buying the threshing floor was the need to stop the punishment being demanded by the sin committed which the angel of death was releasing on the people.

A sacrifice was required blood needed to be shed for the atonement. Just as the life of Isaac was requested and was prophetically fulfilled by Messiah in the very same place.

Victory over sin and death and it makes sense to those who believe in Jesus/Yeshuas substitutionary death.

But what is the significance of threshing?

Threshing is essentially dividing –

separating the wheat from the chaff.

Threshing floors are mentioned in the scriptures and is a theme woven into in various stories and in the Hebrew thinking because there is something

that God is wanting us to think about.

in this agricultural process.

Hand Threshing below:

Jesus/Yeshua used many agricultural references in His parables and teachings to emphasize and highlight His points; because those listening understood the farming concepts.

Psalms also begins with likening the righteous and wicked with nature a well watered-tree versus chaff. It begins with the phrase,

blessed is the man–

similar to Jesus/Yeshua’s sermon on the mount –

blessed is he who does not join with sinners, but who meditates on God’s word:

He will be like a planted tree over streams of water,
producing its fruit during its season.
Its leaf never droops—but in all he does, he succeeds.

The wicked are not so.
For they are like chaff that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand during the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. verses.3-5

The prophet Malachi ended his writings with a similar picture:

“Then you will return and distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him.”

“For behold, the day is coming—it will burn like a furnace—when all the proud and every evildoer will become stubble. The day that is coming will set them ablaze” says Adonai Tzva’ot “leaving them neither root nor branch.”

Malachi 3:18-19

John the Baptist appears to pick up right where Malachi left off! He is telling the people of Judea about the Messiah:

“His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He shall clear His threshing floor and gather His wheat into the barn; but the chaff He shall burn up with inextinguishable fire.”

In the New Testament John the Baptist continues Malachi’s warning by telling the people of Judea about the Messiah and this is not the picture of Yeshua/Jesus many like to think of however this is who Messiah is.

What He is saying is, that there are different destinies for the unrighteous and the righteous;

and there is One, Who has the right to implement the threshing

because He is, I AM, He alone is worthy.

We often read this verse

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail.” (Luke 22:31-32)

and think it was only Simon but the scripture reads

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you

ALL

like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail.” (Luke 22:31-32)

Luke 22:31 Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you …

Satan has received permission to test all of you, to separate the good from the bad, as a farmer separates the wheat from the chaff.

This sifting the wheat from the chaff was at the Pesach/Passover when He turns to the one on whom he was counting to feed his sheep.

Paul says, that we must consider the kindness and the severity of God. The process of sifting is not pleasant it is designed to get rid of impurities and all that would be a hindrance to us. Sifting is a process where the chaff of wheat is removed.

When you pick grains of wheat – it has little paper like chaff that is inedible around it. Sifting gets rid of that which is not useful.

To sift you as wheat means:

to toss them to and fro as wheat is in a sieve; that is to afflict and distress them by scattering them both from Christ, and one another.

Both attributes are of equal importance because Judgment Day will surely come, as He warns us the season of grace will close.

He has those keys and opens and shuts the door.

He is the DOOR /DALET and will close off access to Himself for ever.

The righteous judgment of Yeshua/Jesus is a good thing, as Revelation declares.

Finally evil is finished and dealt with forever.

Therefore just as the weeds are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks and those who practice lawlessness. They will throw them into the fiery furnace; in that place will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear!

Matthew 13:40-43

Of the increase of His government

(the key on His shoulder)
and shalom there will be no end—
on the throne of David and over His kingdom—
to establish it and uphold it
    through justice and righteousness
    from now until forevermore.
The zeal of Adonai-Tzva’ot
    will accomplish this. Isaiah 9:6

The scriptures of the wheat and the tares the winnowing fork just as Boaz was working on the harvest as our Kinsman Redeemer our Go’el so too the harvest of the Lord will be winnowed and the chaff will be removed as will the tares, first before His own are gathered unto Himself.

The Fields Are White for Harvest “ Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest ” (John 4:35)

Harvest time is here…

It is a serious and sobering picture and a theme through the Word of God; that evil will not prosper, even though at times it may look like the opposite is true.

This world is not the end it is not the TRUTH; it is not reality spiritually speaking.

We have a hope, a future, the threshing floor declares it.
