Who or What Is A Tela?

Who or What Is A Tela?

Is there a connection between sheep and people,

lambs and children?

& who gets into heaven?

References to sheep, lambs, and goats are familiar to the reader and are often used in scripture in both the old and new testaments. Shepherds and their flocks were a common sight in Bible days and those listening to Messiah understood His references.

The Hebrew language has a number of different names/words for sheep and lambs, including the following:

Strong’s Hebrew: 563.

אּמְּרִין  immar  — a lamb

[אִמַּר] noun masculine lamb

Strong’s Hebrew: 2922.

טְלָאּים (tela) — lamb

Strong’s Hebrew: 2924.

טָלֶה (taleh) — a lamb

taleh: a lamb

Original Word: טָלֶה

Part of Speech: Noun Masculine

Transliteration: taleh

Phonetic Spelling: taw-leh’

Strong’s Hebrew: 3532.

כֶּ֫בֶשׂ  kebes  — a lamb

Original Word: כֶּבֶשׂ

Part of Speech: Noun Masculine

Transliteration: kebes

Phonetic Spelling: keh-bes’

A kesah  כשה

Kap Sine Hei

Was the sacrificial lamb –

David spoke of himself in Psalms 119:176:

I have gone astray like a lost sheep,

seek thy servant for I do not forget thy commandments.

There is something innocent about a little lamb, they are very trusting and naïve. Unlike other animals, sheep cannot find their way without a leader. Just like us we need to follow Jesus to find our way because He IS the WAY and leads us into all truth.

Sheep will bond very quickly with humans and will naturally follow any leader.

It is sheep who are led to slaughter, not pigs, cows, or deer.

The longer a sheep is with a shepherd the more intimate that sheep will become with the shepherd and the more unlikely it is to lose its way; the same is true for us.

However, sheep who have spent little time with their shepherd will be more prone to follow the call of another shepherd and will wander away from its shepherd and get lost.

Some sheep just follow their own way to feed themselves and will become so focused on feeding that they will wander away from the flock.

In his Greek writings, Aristotle pointed out the similarity of the Greek word for feeding and wandering in order to show the innocence of sheep.

It seems appropriate that God would use the illustration of a wandering sheep to show His loving care. He is not angry with us when we wander, He understands that our wandering is not always intentional or rebellious, but is simply the result of us being too focused on our physical needs like eating and drinking.

We focus on our jobs, our finances, and our health so much that we never stop to look up at our Shepherd and before long he is gone. Not that he has left us but we have left him and lost our way. Once a sheep has gone astray, he will not find his way back to the flock, unless the shepherd comes looking for him, he will remain lost.  That is why David says in this verse “seek thy servant.” All that little lamb can do is stand in his lost condition and bleat, hoping his shepherd will find him.

As we come to the week of Passover/Pesach the image of a lamb is once again in the forefront of our thoughts.

The celebration has its’ roots in the remembrance of the exodus from Egypt and the sacrificial lambs blood that was placed on the doorposts for their deliverance.

The type and shadow that was to come with Messiah.

Sheep were worshipped in Egypt because the Egyptian god Khnum was a sheep and was both one of the earliest-known and one of the their major gods. To them, Khnum was the creator of all life and was originally the god of the source of the river Nile. They believed this because the annual flooding of the Nile river brought life to its’ surroundings as well as much silt and clay. This believed this ‘sheep god’ was the creator of human children’s bodies, which were made from the silt and clay formed on a potter’s wheel, and then put into their mothers’ wombs. Later this deity was described as having formed and molded the other deities, and was given other titles, lord of created things from himself and divine potter.

This may be one of the reasons why the Hebrews were to sacrifice a lamb as protection from the final plague. It was certain that no Egyptian follower of Khnum would ever harm a small lamb which was the symbol of one of their esteemed deities.

From the Hebrews point of view, it showed their complete rejection of the Egyptians pagan beliefs and furthermore was completely disrespectful to their religion; and especially when God commanded that a sheep be slaughtered as an atonement for sins.

A warning for sensitive readers, some of the following pictures are very graphic in nature and may be upsetting to some…however they do depict what the scriptures tell us… and it may help us to fully appreciate what our sin cost our Savior….

We need to take a moment and consider that with Gods’ command that a family takes a newly born little lamb, the children who were most likely assigned to care for it to make sure it was without blemish or spot grew to love it like a pet.

The lamb would have been hand fed, washed and protected from insects and anything that was harmful to it and was no doubt fed at the same time the family ate, almost like another child/family member. Then when the day of atonement arrived, they would bring this little lamb to the temple and watch a priest take a knife and slaughter it before their very eyes.

It would have been explained to children and adults alike, that

death is the penalty for sin

and

this innocent little lamb who had done nothing but give love was to die giving its life in their place.

Messiah Jesus Christ, Who was completely innocent and walked in unconditional love, and yet because of our sins, He had to die.

In Him we have the Lamb of God.

He is the wounded lamb

the tela

because Messiah is spoken of by John as the

Lamb of God

who came to take away the sins of the world

and again in Revelation as the Lamb that was slain.

Then I saw a Lamb who appeared to have been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. Revelation 5:6

He was wounded for our transgressions –sins. Isaiah 53:5-12

He became that wounded lamb in our place

because so many of us have been

wounded lambs at one time or another.

We will never not be His children however old we are

and He will never stop being our Shepherd Who leads and guides us by His Spirit.

What did David see in his own wanderings and going astray?

It was a picture of a sacrifice,

one that God could use, to show many generations

the loving kindness of

the

Good Shepherd.

The  Hebrew word that David uses for the

lost sheep is keseh

and there was something else to him using this word.

A keseh is a little lamb,

but a very special lamb,

it is the sacrificial lamb.

David didn’t see himself as just any lamb going astray,

he was the sacrificial lamb that went astray.

He knew that he had a Shepherd who would exchange places with him on that altar.

Most of us will agree that we live a life that has many hardships, pain, heartbreak, and sadness. We may sometimes feel, like David, that we are a keseh or sacrificial lamb of God, one that from time to time has a tendency to go astray, but there is a Shepherd looking for us; One Who has laid down His life so we would not have to pay the price and be sacrificed for our sins.

One Hebrew word

שֶׂה

pronounced: seh is a she lamb

The ‘she,’ lamb, is a young sheep or goat

and is the most significant sacrificial animal in scripture.

 noun כֶּבֶשׂ. lamb, sheep. כבש.

TSoAn TSAn means “lamb” in Hebrew.

This word is pronounced “Se ha’Elohim.”

It is an adjective and usually has a sound of SH

טָלֶה noun masculine

1Samuel 7:9 lamb

Late Hebrew id., lamb;

Aramaic: טַלְיָא lamb, youth,

טַלְיְתָא girl, boy, youth, girl

compare Mark 5:41;

Arabic: the young of cloven-footed animals.

It is also mentioned with another Hebrew name which is the name of the adult of this species: ‘ke•ves,’ sheep.

In many references the ‘seh’ is mentioned as a ‘year-old sheep.’

In  Leviticus and Numbers

these detailed rules of the offering ceremony are recorded.

Whereas the ordinary ceremony requires a young lamb.

The sacrificial lamb was done

on certain holidays such as

Yom Kippur /The Day of Atonement,

and Pesach/Passover,

in particular, the sacrificial lamb

must be without blemish.

The Hebrew word for this phrase is ta•min,

which also means innocent or perfect:

“Your lamb shall be without blemish/tamin, a male of the first year; you shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats”

Exodus 12:5

This Old Testament ‘seh’ has everything required to

reflect the image and character of the Messiah;

and, without doubt He is

innocent, perfect, with no blemish

and He is prophesied to pay with His life for the sin of all of us:

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, but he humbled himself and opened not his mouth; he was brought like a lamb to the slaughter, and like a sheep, that is dumb before its shearers, he did not open his mouth”

Isaiah 53:6-7

The sacrificed ‘seh’ is the most important metaphor in the New Testament. In Hebrew it’s called

Seh Ha•Elohim,- The Lamb of God:

The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29

He was the Passover/Pesach Lamb, Who became the perfect sacrifice/seh for everyone who believes and understands what He did by becoming the substitute to pay the penalty for our sins.

We may not be familiar with the breeds of sheep and goats in the middle east where the animals look very much alike…

and it often easier to tell when they are fully grown.

We are very familiar with Messiah represented as a Shepherd,

and His followers are represented as

His flock, sheep and lambs.

We are called the sheep of His pasture and we also read of the future separation of the sheep from the goats.

And all the nations will be assembled before him and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd who separates sheep from goats. Matthew 25:32

This reference is also a reminder to His followers to be just that, followers.

We are not to be independent, stubborn,

rebellious or disobedient;

neither are we to be pretending to be one of His sheep.

He also said

“And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:2-4

The Hebrew word tela also has the meaning:  little child.

Do the meanings of the Aramaic and Hebrew words reveal something more to us about this very familiar picture?

He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms. Isaiah 40:11.

This is very important as there is a connection between

the Hebrew words for

lamb and little child –

in Hebrew/Aramaic it’s written:

טגא

tet gimel alef.

The most common word for

 a child or small infant

is yalad or yeled

yeled: child, son, boy, kid, youth, youngster

Original Word: יֶלֶד
Part of Speech: Noun Masculine
Transliteration: yeled
Phonetic Spelling: yeh’-led

There is also another word, tabitha which is a play off on the word in Hebrew talitha. In Aramaic, it means a child. Familiar to us in the raising of Jairus daughter in Mark 5:41

alitha cumi for Greek ταλιθὰ κούμι,

which, in turn, is a transliteration of the Aramaic

טְלִיחָא קוּמִי  Maiden, arise.

Mark preserves the Aramaic term

Talitha kum’ instead of just translating it:

Biblical scholars agree that Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, was a Jewish man from a working-class background in Judea, and would have spoken Aramaic, a 3,000-year-old language that shares many Hebrew words.

The Aramaic language is a Semitic language closely related to Hebrew. Originally this language of the Arameans, it was used, in many dialectical forms, in Mesopotamia and Syria. Aramaic is a Semitic language which was common in much of the Near East from about 7th century BC until the 7th century AD.

Taking the child’s hand, He said [tenderly] to her,

“Talitha kum!”—which translated [from Aramaic] means,

“Little girl, I say to you, get up!”

Hebrew: 2922.   טָלָא   ṭālā’

 טָלָא (H2921) taw-law

טְלָא ṭᵉlâʼ, tel-aw’; apparently from H2921 in the (original) sense of covering (for protection); (compare H2924) a lamb:

† טָלֶה noun masculine1 Samuel 7:9 lamb (Late Hebrew id., lamb;

Aramaic טַלְיָא lamb, youth,

Variant spellings for this word: טלי (Gesenius) טלא

(Strongs) Teli טְלִי

טְלִי (ṭᵊlî), lambs

little child

yeled

ילד קטן

ṭālā’ טָלָא

טְלָאּים (tela) – lamb

 Aramaic טַלְיָא lamb,

tela lamb Mark 9:37 and Matt 18:3

The word used in the Greek for

little children is paidai

which is the word for a little child or infant.

Unless you become as a little child you cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

As previously noted, the most common word is yalad which is a child or small infant; and there is also the other word which is a play off the word in Hebrew which is talitha.

In Aramaic, it means a child.

But in Hebrew, it means a wounded lamb.

Did Messiah Jesus choose to use talitha from the root word tela rather than yalad to give a little play on the words?

Strong’s Hebrew: 2922. טְלָאּים (tela) — lamb

Original Word: טְלָא

Part of Speech: Noun Masculine

Transliteration: tela

Phonetic Spelling: tel-aw’

Definition: lamb

NAS Exhaustive Concordance

Word Origin the same as taleh,

The word for lamb is tela’.

It is used only once in Scripture and it is found here and means lamb. Altogether there are about nine other words in the Hebrew language that are used for lamb.

Tela actually means:

to be blemished, spotted or wounded.

The Lamb that the Good Shepherd is carrying is one that is not perfect, it is flawed, or has been wounded and can not walk.

As a Rabbi, Messiah Yeshua/Jesus used many little educational tools to instruct his disciples.  One often used by rabbis throughout the ages is the use of a play on words.

Sometimes a word sounds like a word from another language and we make a play off it as in the example in Matthew 18:3. Here, Jesus/Yeshua is saying that unless we become as little children.

The play on words cannot be seen from the Greek because it only works in a Semitic language.

The word used in the Greek for little children is paidai which is the word for a little child or infant. Unless you become as a little child you cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven.  We probably think that Jesus is telling us that we must have the faith of a child.  Does our Heavenly Father expect us to have a faith so naïve/immature, perhaps Messiah meant something more?

Messiah Jesus spoke these words in Aramaic and, as we have seen there are two words that could be used for a child. The most common word is yalad which is a child or small infant. The other word in Aramaic is tabitha which is a play off the word in Hebrew talitha..  and in Aramaic, it means a child.  But in Hebrew, a similar sounding word talitha means a wounded lamb.  They share a similar root word, tela’. Did Messiah choose to use tabitha from the root word tela rather than the most common word yalad to give a play on words?

The disciples would be familiar with the Biblical Hebrew, as it was used as a ceremonial language. In the same way today, that Latin is still used in the Catholic church services.  It was not used as a spoken language unless a person was speaking with Jews from another land who spoke, Greek for example, but not Aramaic, they would still have the Hebrew language as a common ceremonial language between them.

In Mark 5:41 when Jesus raised the little girl from the dead he said: Tabitha Koum.  This is in a feminine form in the Aramaic and means: little girl get up.   However, it is very close to the Hebrew word tela for a wounded lamb.  Messiah could have said yalid – rise up which also means little child rise; but instead He chose to use a word which plays off the Hebrew and those who understood the use of such words would quickly pick up on the wordplay.

Little wounded lamb, arise.

Was this a more affectionate way to address her? Did the people hear both, and did they hear a play on these words?

We may have the same thing when it is recorded Messiah said: : “Unless you become as a little child you cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven,” He used the Aramaic word talitha and did a wordplay saying:

Unless you come as a wounded or sorrowful little child you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.

We could say in other words with a deeper meaning that, unless we are really sorrow for our sins a like a little child is sorrowful because the parent corrects them and they climb into the parent’s arms crying and from the heart says: “I’m sorry.” they will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Could this be why Messiah further says that, if we humble ourselves as a child or wounded truly sorrowful child,

we will be great in heaven?

This is the kind of godly sorrow or genuine repentance that makes an individual great in the kingdom of heaven.  This humility is that of a child who is not afraid to admit they are wrong and will even cry out of sorrow when his carelessness is pointed out.

When children are forced by their parents, or other authorities, to say “I am sorry.”  It is often under pressure, however when a child really says sorry without being told to, it is genuine; and that is the repentance our Heavenly Father is looking for, not one under given under pressure, threat or duress.

To see a child who is truly sorry asking to be forgiven, can melt the heart of a parent who will just want to hug the child and assure them of forgiveness.

Trying to appear remorseful and sorrowful after we’ve been caught is worth nothing to most people; especially if they think we are repentant simply because we got caught and now have to face the consequences.

Isn’t it the same with our Heavenly Father? True Godly sorrow is sorrow over having wounded and broken a father’s heart because of our sins. HIs Holy Spirit will bring that conviction and sorrow and without it we are no better off as there is no change.

Once we realize just how much our Heavenly Father loves us, that He sent His Son to die for us and has brought nothing but good into our lives; His Holy Spirit will make that very clear and cause us to grieve in the right way, that is Godly sorrow.

This is a tela, a wounded, sorrowful little lamb.

2 Corinthians 7:10

For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Strongs H2922

טְלָאִים plural of foregoing H2924,

only Isaiah 40:11 in metaphor of י׳ shepherding his people.

He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs H2922 with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

The word for flock and shepherd are the same words. One is used as a noun and the other as a verb. It is up to the translator to apply the application so it makes some sense.  The word used for shepherd in the Hebrew here is ra’ah.  It can mean shepherd but in its Semitic root, it is the word RA and is the prime word for evil. There are many words in Hebrew which begins with RA ( the letters Resh and Ayin).  Each word would reflect a different type of evil.

Ra’ah  has the idea of a consuming passion.

A consuming passion can be evil, if that passion is drugs, alcohol, etc. We would use the word ra’ah today to describe an addiction.  A drug addict will sacrifice a job, resources, family and friends to satisfy the passion for drugs.  In such a case that consuming passion is evil.

Lust can be defined as:

the appetite of demons expressed through human flesh! Desires that are never satisfied, always wanting and craving more, insatiable and unable to ever be appeased.

An addiction will control the life of the individual This is a place from which the individual cannot escape without help, because it’s the place of bondage and people will defend things that have been established in their flesh. Freedom can only come when we turn to the Lord our Shepherd, admit there is a problem; repent and turn to Him, and be converted as that little child.

Then

deliverance from bondage comes through

the blood of the Lamb…the wounded lamb.

A consuming passion is some cases is good.  Shepherds are consumed with their sheep as they spend their lives leading them to green pastures, cool waters and protecting them.

A good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep, hence the word ra’ah is used for a Shepherd.  A true friend is one who is consumed with love for their friends. As Jesus said, “Greater love has no man than this than a man lay down his life for his friend (John 15:13).” Hence the word ra’ah is often rendered as a friend. From a friendship one is fed, giving and receiving pleasure, comfort and delight. We are nourished emotionally from a friendship. Thus the word ra’ah is also used to express feeding, just as a shepherd will feed his sheep.

So it seems there is a connection between sheep and people,

lambs and children

& who gets into heaven…

This week let’s not only focus on knowing Him and the power of His Resurrection; but also on the enormity of the price that was paid for our salvation, forgiveness, deliverance, healing, wholeness.. The true and eternal cost to Messiah, that is reflected in our freedom today to read these words; and to choose to live for Him and not ourselves as He has chosen to abide with and in us.

He is our Tamid – He is our Kesah  –

He is our Tela – the wounded Lamb…

Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Let’s not take this miraculous provision of grace and mercy lightly, or for granted. Let’s not get caught in traditions of men or doctrines of demons, but dig for truth; and in finding the pearl of great price, let’s surrender ALL to Him Who gave His ALL for us –

How can we do anything less?

As Haggai 1:5 said consider your ways…

Isn’t it  time to consider ours??…..

In Which Kingdom Are We Dwelling?

A kingdom is a dom of a king

or a domain/dominion

a designated area of land

which is ruled over by a king/leader;

one who has dominion or

has dominated the dom-domain.

Today we may associate the word more with a webpage or website having a domain name in order to reach it!

NAS: him and obtain dominion; his domain [will be] a great

KJV: above him, and have dominion; his dominion [shall be] a great

INT: dominion a great his domain

Hebrew words for domain include:

noun. תְחוּם confines, territory, realm, scope, area

noun. דוֹמֵיין domain

noun שֶׁטַח surface, area, territory, field, zone

noun רָשׁוּת

Strong’s Hebrew: 4475. מֶמְשָׁלָה (memshalah) — rule …

memshalah: rule, dominion, realm

Original Word: מֶמְשָׁלָה

Phonetic Spelling: mem-shaw-law’

Here the translations of the verses use the words:

govern and rule as well as dominion:

Genesis 1:16
HEB: הַמָּא֤וֹר הַגָּדֹל֙ לְמֶמְשֶׁ֣לֶת הַיּ֔וֹם וְאֶת־
NAS: light to govern the day,
KJV: light to rule the day,
INT: light the greater to govern the day light

Genesis 1:16
HEB: הַמָּא֤וֹר הַקָּטֹן֙ לְמֶמְשֶׁ֣לֶת הַלַּ֔יְלָה וְאֵ֖ת
NAS: light to govern the night;
KJV: light to rule the night:
INT: light and the lesser to govern the night the stars

1 Kings 9:19
HEB: וּבְכֹ֖ל אֶ֥רֶץ מֶמְשַׁלְתּֽוֹ׃
NAS: and in all the land under his rule.
KJV: and in all the land of his dominion.
INT: all the land his rule

We are most familiar with Genesis 1:26: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness and let them have dominion over fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

During the last 2,000 years Christianity followed in their own way and not the way of their Hebrew/Jewish/Israelite heritage and have missed out on special blessings as well as spiritual experience.

The Hebrew word yiredu is translated into our English Bible as dominion but the Hebrew language has a different rendering for this word. Without exception all the modern translations of the Bible follow the common teaching that the word yiredu comes from the root word radah; which means:

dominion, or to subdue,

to rule over,

to tread upon like in a winepress.

It has been suggested that the root word is really yarad.

Here it would follow, that as the original inspired Word of God had no vowel dots, it would seem more correct to the original by using the root word yarad – to lower oneself,

rather than radah – to rule over.

In the original Hebrew, the word starts with a letter Y – Yod

which is a picture of a heavenly messenger

or yarad which means to lower oneself

and not an R – Resh in radah,

which means to rule over…something to chew on at least!

A King makes it his domain, his own.

Melek מלך

Melech (מלך) is a Hebrew word that means king and may refer to: Melech (name) a given name of Hebrew origin. The title of king in ancient Semitic culture.

Strong’s Hebrew: 4428. מֶ֫לֶך (melek) — king

a male monarch; member of a royal family who is the supreme ruler of his nation.

The word me•lech is mentioned over 1,000 times in the Bible, but only a handful of references refer to our Heavenly Father. Interestingly, the title me•lech is a part of God’s name in every Hebrew prayer.

All Hebrew prayers begin with

Blessed are You Lord, King of the universe.

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu, melekh ha’olam

ברוך אתה ה’ אלהינו מלך העולם

It raises a question as to why we see only a few references to our Heavenly Father as a King. An interesting note is that many of the Hebrew prayers were inspired by the Book of Psalms, where King is most frequently used in reference to Adonai.

“Thus says the Lord the King of Israel…”

Isaiah 44:6

“The Lord is King for ever and ever”

Psalm 10:16

“and the Lord sits enthroned as King forever”

Psalm 29:10

“For the Lord Most High is awesome; he is a great King over all the earth”

Psalm 47:2

All other references of me•lech/king are of the many human kings mentioned throughout scripture.

It is noteworthy to mention that Messiah is also called

King Messiah.

In Luke 23:2 “They began to accuse him, saying, ‘We found this man perverting the nation, forbidding paying taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king’”

Also in the New Testament:

Me•lech Me•la•chim va•A•do•ney ha•A•do•nim’

“…KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS”

Revelation 19:16

Strong’s Hebrew: 3566. כּ֫וֹרֶשׁ (Koresh) — a Person. king

Koresh: a Person. A king.

Original Word: כּוֹרֶשׁ.

Phonetic Spelling: ko’-resh

and saying,

The time is fulfilled, and the

kingdom of God

is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.

Mark 1:15

What is the gospel

It’s the good news,

that’s what the Greek word euangélion meansgood news.

And what exactly is the good news?

In western Christianity the answer is usually something like, “Jesus died for our sins and we are forgiven.”

That is good news, however, it isn’t exactly the biblical euangélion.

The real good news is clear in Mark’s introduction of Jesus/Yeshua’s ministry in this verse.

The good news is this:

God’s Kingdom is close and its time to repent.

The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,[ the Son of God,[ as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
    who will prepare your way”[
“a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.

The writers of the new testament understood this.  In Paul’s opening statement in his letter to the Romans he says:

Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, . .”  Not, the

good news of forgiveness

but rather the good news of God.

The kingdom is close to arriving.

It’s worth a second thought that Yeshua/Jesus preached the kingdom, while the church/ecclesia mostly preaches Jesus/Yeshua.  It is important to be aware that we may be preaching and teaching about Jesus/Yeshua, however we may lose the vision of the kingdom that He came to bring?

We first hear John speak In Matthew 3:2 repent because the kingdom of Heaven is here.

The word heaven in this verse is shamayim and it is used as a reverent and respectful way of avoiding speaking the divine Name/Hashem – YHVH/YHWH. Notice Heaven has a capital H when it’s referring to our Heavenly Father, while heaven refers to the sky or in some cases paradise. When reading, we often miss the use of the capitalized letter which is not a typo or misprint but indicative of the above observance.

Yeshua/Jesus instructed His listeners about the kingdom of God, however the phrase kingdom of God is not anywhere in the Torah/Towrah. It does have parallels in the Torah, (first 5 books); however, and it became more popular as the rabbis taught it so when Yeshua/Jesus spoke about the kingdom, it was familiar to the people because they knew what the rabbis taught.

What is the definition of the Kingdom

Matthew 6:33…..

The kingdom of heaven /the kingdom of God

is tikkun ha’olam,

God’s redeeming work in this world.

We are not simply waiting for heaven to come to earth and neither is it an escape from our earthly life.  It’s not just the hope of some special reward after our bodies die; rather it is doing with our Heavenly Father what He is doing right now.

In Luke 4

it’s, as Yeshua/Jeus tells us, healing the sick, visiting prisoners, forgiveness of sins, encouraging those in despair, bringing light to the blind both physical and spiritual and caring for the poor.  It is giving hope in times of darkness, food to the hungry, health and deliverance to the captives; and making disciples.  The reason the Kingdom of God is close at hand, is because all of these godly actions are only as far away as our willingness to do them.  The gospel, the good news, is NOW, it is for everyone who has ever known the sadness and desperation of living in this broken sin sick world. The Kingdom of our Heavenly Father can be manifested anytime we choose to yield ourselves and experience His redemptive power. One day His Kingdom will be obvious and it will be manifest everywhere, until then, His Kingdom comes when we allow our Heavenly Father’s character to be shown to the world through our lives.

noun מַמלָכָה. realm, state, sovereignty.

מַּלְכוּ ‘malku’ meaning ‘Kingdom’ 4437

Hebrew word מַּלְכוּ, malku (Strong’s 4437) translated ‘Kingdom’.

מַּמְלָכָה ‘mamlakah’ meaning Kingdom

Hebrew word מַּמְלָכָה, mamlakah (Strong’s 4467) translated kingdom, king’s, reign, royal

From malak ; dominion, i.e. (abstractly) the estate (rule) or (concretely) the country (realm) — kingdom, king’s, reign, royal.

In ancient times kings were kings over cities and smaller areas. Often called empires.

Nowadays there are only a few countries who have a royal family or a king /queen ruling over them; and most are in name only, not having the full control or dominion over the land they are king/queen over.

In His conversation with Pilate, the scripture tells us that Messiah stated His kingdom is not of this world

His kingdom is the kingdom of the heavens

and is not yet visible to us and we live in it by faith because… it is an unseen realm, one purely spiritual in nature. There is a scripture that tells us that…

the kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ/Messiah and He shall reign for ever and ever. Revelation 11:15.

This tells us that it is yet to come and meanwhile, the adversary has Gods’ permitted rule and dominion as the prince of the power of the air and as Yeshua/Jesus said, in John 14:30 the prince of this world cometh…. He could not have offered them to Messiah during the wilderness temptations, if they were not his to offer.

The question is.. if we are children of light and the kingdom of the heavens is within us which kingdom are we living in and for?

They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

John 17:11, 15–16

We are in the world but not of it so……

where are we dwelling?

Ps 91:1 states that He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide …

so where are we dwelling?

Is it IN the kingdom of heaven?

The Kingdom of Heaven – מַלְכוּת הַש.

This phrase is very important to every believer.

It is made of two words:

kingdom and of heaven.

Recall Hebrew is written from right to left, therefore

kingdom is on the right followed by of heaven on its left.

If heaven is sha•ma•yim, then what is the ha in front of it?

It’s the definite article the. The word the is not a separate word in Hebrew as it is in English, but is a prefix that is a part of the word that it is defining.

The word sha•ma•yim was given by our Heavenly Father…

“And God called the firmament Heaven…”

Genesis 1:8

..after He divides the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. Therefore, this word in Hebrew only speaks of the biblical narrative; the word

water – má•yim

is a part of the word for

heaven – sha•ma•yim!

Recall that there are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet. The kingdom of heaven is mentioned 22 times in the New Testament when searching for whole words (not combinations).

mamlakah meaning Kingdom

Strong’s 4467

מַּמְלָכָה

used in

2 Sam. 7:13.

He shall build a house for my name,

and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

Hebrew word מַּלְכוּת, malkut Strong’s #4438

translated Kingdom used in

2 Chron. 7:18. Then will I establish the throne of your kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David your father, saying, There shall not fail of you a man to be ruler in Israel.

מַּלְכוּ malku meaning Kingdom Strong’s #4437

used in Ezra 7:13 Levites, in my kingdom, which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with you.

Kingdom of Heaven & Kingdom of God.

We read of two different phrases in the gospels:

kingdom of heaven and kingdom of God.

In Matthew, kingdom of heaven is used, while in Mark and Luke, kingdom of God is used. This is because in the Israelite culture of Messiahs’ day, and today, people show respect for our Heavenly Father by not pronouncing His Name. Another word is often substituted, e.g., heaven, the name (Hashem), or the mighty one.

For example, the prodigal son says to his father, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight.” The son is using the word heaven as a reference to God. Here, Matthew is preserving the culturally-correct quote kingdom of heaven while Mark and Luke are explaining that heaven is a reference to God.

The words that Messiah spoke were probably

Malchut shemayim – mahl-KUT shuh-MAH-eem;

which was a phrase used then in the rabbis’ teaching.

The word malchut is related to the word

melekh which we have noted means king.

Malchut is associated with the

actions of a king: his reign and authority,

and also anyone who is under his authority.

and shemayim is Hebrew for heavens.

(Shamayim is sometimes spelled Shemayim).

A simple way of translating it would be:

God’s reign,

or

how God reigns

or

those God reigns over.

But what does it really mean?

The basic understanding of the kingdom of heaven was

God’s reign over the lives of people who enthrone him as king.

We might think that God by default as its creator, is king over everything He created. In scripture, however, it’s assumed that after the fall and the tower of Babel, the world began to serve other gods and here, God ceased from being their king. Much of the world did not know God, however the Bible promises that one day, The LORD will be king over all the earth; in that day the LORD will be the only one, and His name the only one. Zech 14:9.

The main question of Messiah’s day was when and how God would establish this kingdom over the world. It was believed that when the Messiah came, the Kingdom of God would arrive at the same time and all at once be established with great glory. Yeshua/Jesus clearly disagreed:

On one occasion, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He replied, The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you. Luke 17:20.

Yeshua/Jesus meant that: an individual is brought into the kingdom of God when they repent and choose, deciding to accept God as their King, this is something that happens in a person’s heart; it is not a political movement nor a visible display of God’s power. Messiah agreed with the teaching of the other rabbis who said that; when a person committed himself daily to love God with all of his heart, soul, mind and strength, (by saying the Shema), he had received upon himself the kingdom of heaven. Meaning: the person had put God on the throne over their life and entered under God’s king-ship, giving Him dominion and rulership.

One of the reasons Yeshua/Jesus preached about the Kingdom of God was to proclaim the fact that He is the Anointed King (Messiah) and this Kingdom is His Kingdom. The good news of the kingdom is that when Messiah, the Son of God arrived on earth, the Kingdom had arrived with Him. Yeshua/Jesus told His disciples to go out and heal the sick, and say that the kingdom of heaven is near, meaning: this Kingdom is arriving NOW on earth, not that it isn’t quite here yet…. fulfilling Balaams 4th prophetic word..

in Numbers 24:17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel…..

A Star out of Jacob is believed to be what the wise men allude to when they search for Messiah as a child and report,

We have seen his star in the east.  Matt. 2:2.

The word Sceptre used in Numbers 24:17 relates to rulership; Jacob used the word when he predicted that the sceptre would not depart from Judah until Shiloh comes; Shiloh was a name used to identify the Messiah, Gen. 49:10. Messiah’s birth, accompanied by the unique cosmic/heavenly sign/signal, was in Bethlehem of Judea. Matt. 2:1.

For us the message is that Messiah Yeshua/Jesus, the King, has arrived, and He is continually establishing His Kingdom as people repent and follow Him. He always described His Kingdom as One which was gradually expanding using descriptions with which we are familiar: like a mustard seed or a tiny bit of yeast that grows and grows. He is describing the groups of believers that start small, and grow as people join. The finale will be when every knee shall bow, and every tongue will confess that Yeshua/Jesus is THE King of all Kings!

Note that the basic understanding of the Kingdom of heaven is our Heavenly Father and Messiah’s reign over people in this world. Often we understand it by likening it to heaven itself, leading us to think that Yeshua/Jesus was always talking about the place heaven, when in fact He was talking about His Father’s work in people’s lives. This leads us to understand that our Heavenly Father cares very little about the lives we live in the here and now, and that He is primarily focused on and cares very deeply about us and our final destination in heaven with Him.

We are not to always interpret the kingdom in terms of Messiah’s return; although of course when He does return His Kingdom will be beyond glorious. Sometimes in the 4 gospels we read the use of the word kingdom where Messiah’s return is referred to, or about His future Heavenly Kingdom, however, much of what He says about His Kingdom is about its’ reality in the here and now.

Which kingdom are we a citizen of/ a part of?

Which kingdom are we looking forward to?

Which kingdom has us in its grip?

Which kingdom have we given our heart, mind, life & strength to?

From David to Yeshua/Jesus, the everlasting kingdom rules and reigns; His kingdom is pure, righteous, holy and is without end.

Strong’s Hebrew: 2822. חֹ֫שֶׁך (choshek)

darkness, night, obscurity

From chashak ; the dark; hence (literally) darkness;

figuratively, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness — dark(-ness), night, obscurity.

Strong’s Hebrew: 215. אוֹר (or) — to be or become light

Ohr’ Is The Hebrew Word For Light

– Light – אוׄר

It means: to see.

Obviously we understand the connection between seeing and light.

In Hebrew  the biblical prophet, the seer, is called

ro-eh, which also comes from or, light.

LIGHT – NOOHRA (ARAMAIC)

‘OR (HEBREW) אור נהר

The Hebrew word is spelled Aleph, Vav, Resh.

The Hebrew word for light expresses

a connection between the natural and the supernatural.

No doubt that many reading this will have felt at one time or another that we are square pegs trying to fit in round holes! Our core values, convictions, responses, beliefs and feelings never seem to find a perfect equal and it’s in those times we must remember… this world is NOT our home and we are just passing through. We are not to build our piece of paradise here on this earth. The only firm foundations we are to lay down must be in our knowledge, understanding of our Heavenly Father and any building must be one of faith in the creator of all things, including the 1st paradise and the one into which we shall one day come.

Dwells is not a common word that we use every day. Once in a while we may hear someone say…

it’s time to stop dwelling on that.

Meaning In other words, that we are stuck on an issue that has bothered us.

However the Biblical definition reveals another perspective.

יָשַׁב

Dwells is Strong’s #3427.

יָשַׁב (yashab) — to sit, remain, dwell

pronounced yaw-shab’

Genesis 4:20
HEB: הָיָ֔ה אֲבִ֕י יֹשֵׁ֥ב אֹ֖הֶל וּמִקְנֶֽה׃
NAS: he was the father of those who dwell in tents
KJV: he was the father of such as dwell in tents,

Dwells is defined as:

to sit down, to remain, to settle, to marry,

make to keep [house], and to return.

Most of the words used to describe Dwell, point to it as a permanent address/place. It’s not like a hotel/motel or a type of travel trailer used during holidays/vacations.

To dwell means: to set up housekeeping, plant flowers, grow trees, hang pictures, to marry and set up a home/ housekeeping.

All the promises of this psalm rest on this first few words and therefore Dwelling is not an optional choice.  Dwelling is an essential component for a believers lifestyle if we want to experience the benefits listed in Psalm 91.

It may be a good opportunity to reflect on exactly what this word means to us individually and furthermore, what does it mean to our Heavenly Father?

Looking at the Hebrew spelling of the word Dwell.

and remembering in Hebrew to read it from right to left

Bet Shin Yod….

Recall from previous posts that every Hebrew letter has a name, a picture, a number value, and a meaning. Interestingly, scientists have discovered that each letter also has a unique sound frequency. No surprise that our Heavenly Father’s chosen language is the only language known with ALL of these qualities!

The very 1st book tells us that His spirit moved upon the face of the waters…

Genesis 1:2
HEB: וְר֣וּחַ אֱלֹהִ֔ים מְרַחֶ֖פֶת עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י
NAS: of God was moving over
KJV: of God moved upon
INT: and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface

The word moved is:

merachapheth –  me·ra·ḥe·p̄eṯ – מְרַחֶ֖פֶת

which means:

to move rapidly, to flutter or to vibrate…

The Spirit of God vibrated over the earth and whatever were His vibrations which came from the sound of His kol/voice as He spoke.. all particles, atoms etc., vibrated in a symphony, synchronized with Him in perfect harmony and creation literally came into being. WOW!

Deeper look at the word: Dwell.

יָשַׁב

Bet Shin Yod….

YOD יָ numerical value of 10

has a meaning of:

The outcome, the completion of something.

Also Means: Hand, Right Arm, Power – Right hand of God’s power, a Deed Done, to Work, to Cover, Allow, Hollow, Open Hand, and also refers to His Spirit of Holiness as is always hanging in the air overseeing.

SHIN שַׁ  numerical value of 300

has a meaning of:

Victory of good over evil, Holy Spirit

Is the picture of: Teeth or Fire and

means: Teeth, Fire, the Fiery zeal of God to consume all His enemies, Devour, Destroy, Something Sharp.

BET  ב numerical value of 2

has a meaning of:

 Divide or Division.

Is the picture of: House.

Means: House/Family; God’s word, God’s dwelling place

A deeper meaning behind the word Dwell could be said to be:

He who Dwells is one who has made the choice to live permanently in God’s house/BET– trusting in God and honoring His Word

There he will experience the activation of God’s right hand YOD of power covering him.

And God in His fiery zeal will consume SHIN all that tries to keep or draw him away from Dwelling.

We are His dwelling place and He is ours and when we choose to trust and obey Him, we live secure in His Presence.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

Colossians 2:9-10 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

BECAUSE…

HE IS OUR BET/HOUSE—OUR SAFE/SECURE HIDING PLACE

2 Corinthians 12:9 But He said to me, My grace (My favor and loving-kindness and mercy) is enough for you [sufficient against any danger and enables you to bear the trouble manfully]; for My strength and power are made perfect (fulfilled and completed) and show themselves most effective in [your] weakness. Therefore, I will all the more gladly glory in my weaknesses and infirmities, that the strength and power of Christ (the Messiah) may rest (yes, may pitch a tent over and dwell) upon me! Amplified.

He will pitch a tent over us and dwell – covering us with Himself.

Isn’t this a more preferable place to be, than in the adversary’s kingdom where stress is at an all time high and fears of every imaginable flavor abound? That kingdom, whose promises are always and inevitably too good to be true and those ventures that end in disaster and ruin. Luck and chance NEVER lead to victory and everlasting peace. The true kingdom is where the true shalom of a Heavenly Father with unconditional love is.

He longs to place us under that canopy where we can not only dwell in His kingdom but His kingdom can dwell in us too. We just have to do our part and make the choice to not just visit a couple of times a week…

but to live permanently to dwell in God’s house –

trusting in God and honoring His Word.

Thrones, dominions, powers, rulers, principalities and spiritual wickedness described in Ephesians 6.

1Tim. 1:17 so to the KING, eternal, imperishable, invisible…

One day we will hear the declaration of complete and total victory….

The kingdoms of this world

have become the kingdoms of our God and His Christ.

Revelation 11:15

Yeshua/Jesus said when He was here

My kingdom is NOT of this world!

A principality is an area presided over by a Prince.

Jesus/Yeshua’s own words we

Can’t serve two masters ..god and mammon.

The world systems are comprised of commerce, buying and selling which requires some kind of currency; i.e. money/mammon and uses mens’ form of governments.

Trade – buying and selling, wealth, riches and pleasures.

The end times list includes

lovers of pleasures – not lovers of God.

The kingdoms are opposed to one another

The kingdoms of darkness and light…

good and evil…

holy and profane…

The world encourages a lifestyle of taking care of self FIRST.. self serving ..to save self, to better self, to advance self.

Are we building our own kingdom?

…trying to make our own paradise here on earth?

Are we continually trying to re establish our lost authority and dominion by building and creating our own kingdom where we are the king in control and safe within our domain?

This, by definition is seeking to save self and preserve our own life apart from Messiah who wants us to…. leave it all and go…seekig His Kingdom and His Way….

No where does scripture tell us to build our own kingdom; instead, we are to lay down our life and take up our cross.

So which kingdom are we in

and

in which one are we serving?

How does this understanding of the

kingdom and king and dominion

affect how we read the scriptures

when Jesus/Yeshua is teaching?

If we read Yeshua/Jesus’ sayings in terms of what our Heavenly Father is doing on earth, rather than in terms of heaven, it may give new insight to his words. When He said:

Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. Matt. 19:14.

Childlike trust is a model for a believer’s commitment to God. Those who are humble, know they can’t live without His care and direction, and they approach Him as children would to their father; these individuals are the ones that He really can teach and have a relationship with. Proud people who feel they have everything under control have a very hard time being under God’s king-ship.

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matt. 6:33

If we devote ourselves allowing our Heavenly Father to direct our lives and do His will, He promises He will take care of our physical needs.

Your kingdom come,

Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Matt. 6:10

Tavo Malkhutekha.

When we say this in what we term as the Lord’s prayer,

we often assume that your kingdom come

means we are waiting for you to return.

We interpret it as a request for Messiah to return quickly.

The two phrases

your kingdom come and your will be done on earth

are really synonymous and are saying :

May all the peoples of the earth enthrone you as king! May everyone on earth know you and do your will!

There is no doubt we are all waiting for Messiahs return; however this is really a request for our Heavenly Father to use us in spreading the gospel/good news and establish His Kingdom on earth within every believer!

We cannot straddle both kingdoms with one foot in each and there is NO fence upon which to sit…we must decide and then live wholeheartedly in and for the kingdom we choose.

The words of this song should be our hearts cry for us not only to be within His Kingdom but to have the fullness of His Kingdom within.

Shalom shalom mishpachah/family

and cheverim/friends!

You are loved and appreciated and prayed for daily.

… and…

it’s all about Life and Relationship, NOT Religion.

You are greatly loved and precious in His sight.

NOT SURE?

YOU CAN BE..

SAY THE FOLLOWING FROM YOUR HEART RIGHT NOW…

Heavenly Father I come to you in the Name of Jesus/Yeshua asking for forgiveness of my sins for which I am truly sorry. I repent of them all and turn away from my past.

I believe with my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus/Yeshua is your Son and that He died on the cross at calvary to pay the price for my sin, so that I might be forgiven and have eternal life in the kingdom of Heaven. Father I believe that Jesus/Yeshua rose from the dead and I ask you to come into my life right now and be my personal Savior and Lord and I will worship you all the days of my life. Because your word is truth I say that I am now forgiven and born again and by faith I am washed clean with the blood of Jesus/Yeshua. Thank you that you have accepted me into your family in Jesus’/Yeshua’s name. Amen.

Swords, Mountains and Gardens

Connecting some more dots with some of the places and things mentioned in the last few posts.… with God there is always more and this post takes a look at a link to the Mishkan, Gardens and Sukkot.

The wilderness camp was at the base of Mount Sinai.

Mount Sinai was also called mount Horeb, the word Horeb is linked to the word HEREV which means sword.

(Hebrew: חרב ‎, Sword) (Remembering that b and v are the same letter bet/vet.)

From charab; drought; also a cutting instrument (from its destructive effect), as a knife, sword, or other sharp implement — axe, dagger, knife, mattock, sword, tool.

This is interesting and significant on several levels, as here was where God cut the covenant between Himself and the children of Israel so it could also be called the mountain of the cutting.

Strong’s Hebrew: 2719.

חָ֫רֶב (chereb) — a sword

In Genesis we read that God

“drove the man out of Eden and stationed east of the garden of Eden the cherubim and the fiery ever-turning sword, to guard the way to the tree of life”

(See last post for more on Eden.)

SWORD OF God = cherev shel hashem

The Hebrew word for sword is Charev or Harev with the start of it being just like the word Hanukkah sometimes spelled Chanukah.

As noted, the Hebrew word for sword is Charev or Herev/Harev – חרב

The pictograph for Zayin looks like a sword, a weapon; the classical Hebrew script is constructed of a Vav with a large “crown” on its head.

There is a Mystery in the Zayin as it is considered a “crowned” Vav and just as Vav represents “yashar,” which is ‘straight light from God to man’, so Zayin reflects the (or chozer), of the vav as the ‘or chozer/ returning light.’

Think for a moment of other places where a crown is mentioned in scripture and what the symbol of the vav is…

Zayin (also spelled zain or zayn or simply zay) is the seventh letter of the Semitic abjads, including Phoenician Zayin , Hebrew ‘Zayin ז, Yiddish Zoyen ז, Aramaic Zain ,

Thought to mean Glowing/Heat, Mount Horeb is one of two names given to a mountain mentioned in the book of Deuteronomy as the site where God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses.

The second name of Horeb in Exodus is, the Mountain of God/the Mountain of YHVH.

Mount Horeb, Hebrew: חֹרֵב,

Greek in the Septuagint: χωρηβ,

Latin in the Vulgate: Horeb.

Mountain in paleo is: har

Hey – Resh

Meaning: behold the head above the rest.

Mt. Horeb – Most likely synonymous with Sinai, was the scene of the burning bush,

of the giving of the Law, and of Elijah’s vision.

We saw the first time the word HEREV is used Genesis was when God places the cherubim at the entrance to the Garden of Eden with the flaming swords, or Herev, because

the Herev is a sword raised up against sin!

And is familiar to us as being symbolic of the Word of God in Ephesians 6:17 and Hebrews 4:11

At the fall from Grace

They were removed from the Garden of life

after accessing a tree and

causing sin to reign

God took man out

of a garden of life

and they died spiritually

(broken relationship/separation from The Father.)

The day sin was put to death

the opposite occurred:

man took God down from a tree/wooden cross,

and placed Him in a garden of death,

the garden tomb

where He was resurrected into LIFE

and restored the broken relationship

with the Father having experienced the separation from Him.

In the Song of Solomon, there is another garden we read:

blow upon my Garden that the spices may flow.

Spices permeate the beautiful story, the Song of Solomon; Shir Hashirim, is the equally pleasant presence of the fragrance of spices.

Without the spices mentioned in this book of love between the Messiah and His Bride Israel, one could hardly imagine the prophesied marriage, or the communion of believers with their God.  Spices seem to be referring to the ascent to the heights of Israel and also pointing to enraptured heights of being in the presence of the Lord and Savior.

The spices are found in the presence of both Bride and Bridegroom, and in the ‘garden enclosed’—representing a virtual garden of each delicate and holy spice.

Most of the spices mentioned are the spices of the Tabernacle, the use and purpose of each spice commanded by God to Moses and Israel, and pointing to the pleasant, beautiful realm of Heaven and the throne/presence of God.

A deeper look at each spice, shows not only the symbolic value of each substance, but the nature of the spices; which in turn point to Messiah and His suffering. (not included in this post).

This should be our prayer..

Breathe upon us with Your Spirit/Ruach wind and stir up the sweet spices of Your life/chaim within us. Spare nothing as You make us Your fruitful gardens and hold nothing back until we release Your fragrance. Come walk with us as You walked with Adam in Your Eden garden and taste the fruits of Your life in us.

When Solomon talked of his beloved feeding the garden and gathering lilies it indicates that, the Lord keeps on feeding and strengthening those who are maturing spiritually; while gathering to Himself, those who are away from His word and still need to know Him.

So man placed God in a garden of death and laid on Him spices, which also came from a garden.

In the Song of Solomon reference to the bride, (us), is also made.

Note the crown!

Let my beloved come into His garden.

The tomb of God is a Garden tomb.

Meaning it is not just a place of death and ending… it is a garden

the place of life

where things sprout and grow.

The place of new beginnings

that place

Ha Makem’- ‘The Place’- המקום

of life/lives

Chaim.

All life now comes out of death.

We all must die in order to live.

Really, we should rejoice to enter His tomb..

to let the old man die

then we will find true new life.

And we are to raise another sword/herev,

the Word of God, the Sword of the Spirit.

As the law, is the instructions for life to be lived righteously, was given on the

Mountain of the sword/Horeb/Herev.

Or :

the mountain (behold the head above the rest) of HisWord.

This instruction was as a sword to be raised up against sin.

Not only corporately but at an individual level in life. We must use that sword against sin, which is, whatever does not line up with the Word of God. Use it to cut away (zayin) and circumcise our hearts putting every sin to death and driving out of the garden of our heart where sin will choke His-word .

The meaning of the letter bet also seen in the temporary house of Sukkot/Tabernacles ….. a place of safety and protection.

Coming from the ancient Hebrew prayer, which is called the hashkiveinu, and it describes an usual picture asking for:

His tabernacle to be spread over them.

Hashkiveinu is the second blessing following the Shema during Maariv.

It is a petitionary prayer to be able to lie down in peace/shalom at night and to return to life the following day.

Like a continual resurrection to life, where His Mercies are new every morning!

The prayer envisions God as a guide and shelter during the night ahead and praises God for watching over us, delivering us, and being merciful.

Here we ask God’s protection from the terrors of night “in the shadow of Your wings”- i.e., like the shelter that a mother bird gives to her young

Psalm 91:4 You will cover us with Your pinions, and under Your wings shall we take refuge.

This word is requesting, (actually commanding), God to make us lie down. We lie and down sleep as an act of surrender to God’s will that we sleep.

Hashkiveinu (hash-kee-VAY-noo), is one of the most beloved prayers of the evening service. It goes back to ancient times, when sleep was poorly understood.

Hashkiveinu Adonai Eloheinu l’shalom Spread the shelter of your peace over us.

V’hamideinu malkeinu L’chaim

Raise us back our King to life.

Keep us safe through the night

Till we wake with morning light.

Revelation 7:9… is the vision of the multitude standing before the throne in white robes holding palm branches…

which is what they held at the feast of tabernacles, or sukkot.

verse 15 says he who sits on the throne will spread his tabernacle over them.

The same unusual picture and the same words as the prayer.

God wants His people to dwell under His Sukkah, His BET/house/tent/His tabernacle, the place of his peace/ the Tabernacle of His shalom.

A Sukkah can be built anywhere. The one in the wilderness was mobile, so where ever we are, we can ask Him to spread over us the tabernacle of His shalom; which means we can live in, and under, that place of peace which includes grace and mercy.

The secret place of his tent is the now the Garden of our heart.

A pavilion is a safe shelter, here His Tent often referred to as the Tabernacle of David. The place of our hiding.

For in the time of trouble He will hide me in His pavilion He will hide me in the secret place of His Tent.

This is connected to Rev 7:9 and Tabernacles Sukkot Revelation 7:15

Revelation 7:15 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 15 For this reason, they are before the throne of God; and they serve Him day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them. Revelation 7:15 (Or sanctuary.)

This Greek word, sk’enos, means ‘tabernacle, booth, shelter, or covering’ and also appears in Rev. 21:3.

This same word, sk’enos, is used to speak of Jesus/Yeshua during His first coming, (John 1:14).

Here we can see the protection provided in Rev. 7:16, corresponding to Isa. 4:5-6, and the fountain of living waters in Rev. 7:17 and 21:4.

For this reason, they are [standing] before the throne of God; and they serve Him [in worship] day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them and shelter and protect them [with His presence].

פָּרֹכֶת

Poreketh – po-reh’-keth = separation

Veils in Hebrew the sacred screen — vail. Strong’s #6532

Greek Strong #: 2665 ‑ καταπέτασμα

(kat‑ap‑et’‑as‑mah);

Eph. 3:18 MAWSAWK; The Life  – The Way –(includes: HOLY OF HOLIES Mercy Seat The veil Golden Altar of Incense HOLY PLACE Eternal Life Access Prayer Holiness Entrance Atonement.)

The poreketh as the vail of the Old Testament is misleading when applied to katapetasma in the New Testament. There are two katapetasma’s in the Holy places. There are two masak’s in the Holy places. There is only one poreketh. (see diagram below).

The way back between the cherubim is through the curtain, upon which the cherubim were represented visually. This curtain was hanging between the holy of holy’s and the inner Court. It was torn from top to bottom at the time of Messiah’s death as He torn for us.

Sin is dealt with in the court where the Bronze altar and bronze laver were and the sacrifice was made..

we can now enter in sinless because of the blood of Messiah that is already on the Mercy seat between the cherubim/The kapporet.

We can enter in to His presence, His ruach hakodesh, His Holy Spirit as the wind/ breath of His presence; blowing the sweet fragrance of spices from His Garden. And with His presence filling the house (our bodies), the temple, the inner sanctuary, not the outer court or the inner court of the temple; but the Holy of Holies. (Jesus/Yeshua in the tabernacle); the sanctuary, which is the body in which we live.

The temple is the whole plan in a structure, where Gentiles/ heathen were welcome in the outer court; so it’s precise that we are the sanctuary of the Lord – His inner place of glory, ha makem of the Shekinah presence.

Ha Makem’- ‘The Place’-המקום

Psalm 27:5 is the pavilion, the safe shelter, the secret place of His tent.

Tent as in Mishkan, and Sukkot booths or tents; (temporary residence, also symbolic of the fact our bodies are temporary residences while here on earth.)

The fulfillment of Sukkot will be when He tabernacles with men forever.

The links to the Mishkan/Tabernacle, 3 Gardens and Sukkot, together with the Herev of The Lord, seems undeniable. Messiah Jesus/Yeshua is in everything we just have to know where to look!

It is only by passing through the

sword of the cherubim in Messiah,

the Word of God made flesh,

that we can enter the Garden

and the life of grace

that contains all the blessings

within the shalom of Messiah.

This is the WAY (back) as if we are accessing EDEN passing through the cherubim and the flaming sword/Herev.

The hope of His calling us, the sukkah of His shalom, the hashkiveinu (spread over us the tabernacle of your peace)…

Don’t leave this page without the certainty that you are able to pass through the cherubim and that you can enter into His Presence washed in the blood of the Lamb of God.

Shalom, Shalom!

Please don’t leave this page without making a decision.

Its all about Life and Relationship, NOT Religion.

You are greatly loved and very precious in His sight.

He longs to give you the Shalom He paid the ultimate price for..

SIMPLY SAY THE FOLLOWING MEANING IT FROM YOUR HEART..don’t delay one more minute, SAY IT RIGHT NOW…

Amen.

Apocalypse (Greek).

Ephesians 2:7… in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his Grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

Greek: ἐν τοῖς αἰῶσι τοῖς ἐπερχομένοις, in the ages to come:

Properly, the ages which are coming on – the ages both of time and of eternity, looked upon in one great continuity.

Here, again, the manifestation of the riches of God’s Grace is looked upon as His special delight, and as His chosen way of manifesting His own self to His creatures. It also carries the meaning that in the ages to come this is the end of God’s permitting sin, in which men are morally dead; and of his suffering them to go on in sin, in a state of unregeneracy; and of his quickening them with Christ, and raising them up, and causing them to sit together with him:

Are we going back – yet at the same time, returning to somewhere in our future? Is there a connection between the place of our genesis and

Remembering the cyclical nature of Hebraic thought and how God’s plan and annual events are cyclical, not linear, in this post we will be taking the ‘scenic route’,

with a paleo pictograph/pictogram tour of 2 gardens!

Is Eden equal to Rest –

equal to a place of Grace –

equal to a place of Shalom?

So get some coffee, (or equivalent) and get comfortable!…

If this is your first time on mmm this post will not make as much sense as it will to those who have been following for some time…Ruach HaKodesh is leading us on a journey step by step – line upon line and is adding to the clarity of His precepts by opening up His Word as deep calls unto deep. Reading previous posts will help each reader to both follow and to absorb the information more easily.
The content of these posts are not refuting or replacing anything we already know, rather enhancing our understanding of what has always been there; things we did not see before because they were hidden until Father chose to reveal them to us. These are the days of the Revealing. They are not designed for fascination but for education to enhance and improve the quality of our personal relationship with Jesus our Messiah/Yeshua HaMashiach.
No one knows it all or always gets it right – so every reader is encouraged to research and check out the things covered to get answers for themselves.

It is obvious from reading the scriptures that we were not created to live in the daily conflicts of strife and struggles of this world and its systems. Our Heavenly Father created us to live in His presence, to be, to exist, to abide, to grow, to rest, in a garden called Eden.

Gan Eden עֵדֶן

is:

The proper name, of a territory.

The garden home of Adam and Eve.

עֵדֶן  –  ay’-den

Ayin – Dalet – Noon/Nun

Paleo-pictograph-pictogram:

eye

door

seed/life

Paleo meaning:

To see the judge of life.

Ayin – eye – עֵ – sees

Noon – seed/life – ן

Dalet – door /judge

den/dan – ןדֶ

The Hebrew word for Judge is dan ןדֶ or seed and door.

The word picture tells us that:

a judge is the door to life.

(The judge offers justice and redemption).

Genesis 30:6..

then Rachel said God has vindicated, (judged) me and has indeed heard my voice and has given me a son.

Therefore she named him

Danjudge/or eternal life

Dalet – door – eternal,

 Noon – life.

Eden: (strongs #5729) literally means: delight, enjoyment, garden of eden, paradise. Semitic root: dn ‘lush’

To see (acknowledge) the judge.

The Garden of Eden was a place of delight and enjoyment….. as long as they recognized and followed God as their judge.

(There are always conditions with the promises and blessings of God.)

(Door eye) Eternal perpetual (seed) life

The Garden of Eden was meant to be a place of continual life.

Chaim

Adam and Eve had to leave so they would not eat of the tree of life and live forever in a fallen state,

that is fallen from a state/place of grace.

Recap. of what grace is in pictographs:

Some claim that the name “Eden” derives from the Akkadian term edinu, which means ‘plain’; and if viewed on a map is clearly a possibility.

Strong’s Hebrew: 5731. עֵ֫דֶן (Eden) — the garden home of Adam and Eve.

עֵ֫דֶן

It was also the Garden of God according to

Ezek 28:13; You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The ruby, the topaz, and the diamond; The beryl, the onyx, and the jasper; The lapis lazuli, the turquoise, and the emerald; And the gold, the workmanship of your settings and sockets, was in you.

There are also deeper Hebrew meanings of the ‘Garden of Eden’.

The Hebrew word for ‘delicate’ is ‘Me’udan’ {מעודן} – which comes from the same root and the initial Latin meaning of ‘delicate’ (‘delicatus’ in Latin) is ‘something that gives pleasure’ (compare with ‘delicious’ – food that is so tasty it gives one pleasure).

Eden N E H (pleasure).

The first residence of man, called in the Septuagint Paradise, which is a word of Persian origin, and describes an extensive tract of pleasure land, similar to an English park; and the use of it suggests a wider view of man’s first abode than it being just a small garden!

The Garden was planted by God and then He put the already formed man into the garden.

The Lord God created the Garden specifically for Adam, the first man, whom God had formed.

In Genesis 2:8-9, we read: The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.

The Letters – Otiot

Ayin, Dalet and Noon

Ayin – eye to see to know to experience to understand

Dalet – door that opens up to a pathway

Nun – seed fish life and activity

Eden is a place where you…

open the door and enter the pathway that leads to life!!!!

When man chose sin, (the pathway to confusion chaos and death – RA);

the doorway in Eden that led to glorified eternal life was removed from the earth.

(THE TREE OF LIFE – JESUS/YESHUA).

They had been tested (just as we all are) and found unworthy to enter into eternal life because of sin.

Did the promise of a glorified body leave his mind when he looked at the tree of knowledge of good and evil? What was he thinking?

God has given us another opportunity with another tree… but this was not pleasant to the eye..

(Isaiah 53:2 and when we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.)

nor desirable for food yet …. and He told us to eat of Him… this tree was dead and cut into a cross, instead of sweet fruit, there was only the stench of sin and death..

Eve looked up to leaves and desirable fruit.

Yeshua/Jesus looks down, from a lifeless dead tree, onto lost sinners and desires them.

He took upon Himself Adam’s sin and the sins of all the offspring until this day and going forward. 1 Cor. 1:18.

In a WAY, He is Eden/Eden’s door/Dalet, the door to eternal life/Nun(or Noon).

In Eden, the tree of life grew in the midst of the garden, however in the new Eden/new Jerusalem, (which comes down from heaven), the tree of life grows on either side of the river.

According to Revelation, it seems to have multiplied and expanded, implying that everyone will have access to it; all will be welcome to eat their fill.

The Garden of Eden

(Hebrew: גַּן־עֵדֶן – gan-ʿḖḏen),

also called Paradise, is the biblical garden of God described in Genesis and Ezekiel. Gen.13:10 refers to the garden of God, and the trees of the garden are mentioned in Ezekiel 31.

We are to understand the Grace of God in truth. Col. 1:16

We are joint heirs of the Grace. 1Peter 3:7; 4:10,16.

For the law was given through Moses, but Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (John 1:17)

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved. Eph. 2:4-5

and the end from the beginning.

Rev. 22:21

The first garden was an enclosed place surrounded and protected but from what?

From everything outside (chet)

it’s perimeter fence.

We know because outside was not so favorable to humans. Adam found that out when expelled from its location.

Outside was not preferable or even equal; it was hostile and God’s presence and provision was not there in abundance where he had never had to ask for anything.

Now he has needs, need of everything…

Eden was a place, of complete Shalom.

(Shin alef lamed mem)

Like a womb:

beten – bet, tet, noon (or nun).

The house that surrounds life!

This is the common word for belly but scripture also uses it for the womb.

(waters of life within it)

Womb – rechem/racham

(looked at in previous post as connected to mercy/compassion);

is:

reysh tet mem

and in the pictographs is reysh= head person; tet = fence, inner chamber; mem = water.

Waters of life (Mem) or chaos are also in the word for peace-shalom.

In the paleo it is

Sheen: teeth, destroy

Lamed: staff, authority

Vav: hook, nail, establish

Mem: water, chaos

This indicates that Shalom peace, only comes…

when the authority connected with chaos and confusion is destroyed!

Every time we say Shalom/peace, we are uttering a prophetic declaration that..

someone will come and destroy the one who is causing all the chaos and confusion…

and in reality that is the Sar Shalom the Prince of Peace.

He knew what He had come to do so when Yeshua/Jesus said:

Peace/Shalom I leave with you I you My

Peace/Shalom

I give to you not as the world gives, give I to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” John 14:27.

He was, (and still is) the authority who came to destroy the one connected with chaos and confusion!

The definition of Shalom cannot be translated into English by one word, but its’ essence is contained in the following phrases:

It means to set, to establish you in shalom. The law of our covenant with Him does not give it and leave it at that, but he sees to it that you are firmly established in shalom.

Shalom, the word normally translated peace, means wholeness, completeness, nothing missing, nothing left out, health, welfare, security, justice, and tranquility, also freedom from all disaster. Having a settled quietness and composure of mind, the fullness of the word for peace which is ‘Shalom’ which could also read ‘full, total and complete wholeness for the human spirit, soul, and body.’

A Hebrew scholar gave the best English translation of shalom: no good thing is withheld.

Shalom comes from shalem meaning to be complete, so when there is shalom there is tranquility just as there is sufficient food clothing and housing. There is divine health, with no sickness.

Shalom means an absence of: disorder, injustice, bribery, corruption, conflict, flat, hatred, abuse, violence, pain, suffering, immorality and all the other negative forces.

When shalom reigns with our Sar Shalom, in complete control, there will be no immorality, no injustice and the principles in the scriptures will be followed by all; and then the command to love your neighbor will be made complete.

The outside of eden was a place without Shalom, which eventually brought death to Adam and Eve.

It was the opposite of Shalom – it is called Ra (resh-ayin)/Rasha (evil, wicked).

While Ra is commonly translated evil or wicked, evil, literally meaning out of harmony with God, the real meaning in English is not expressed in the dictionary.

The meaning of the Hebrew word Rasha:

reysh (resh)

sheen (shin) ayin

= wicked, guilty

Head = person

teeth = devouring

eye = sees

meaning:person of the devouring eye

(gives a new perspective on  why we are to refrain from coveting and evil eye!)

and

Ra:Reysh Ayin – bad, evil.

Head = person

eye = sees

person of the eye:

a person who watches can be good or evil,

Ra is the total opposite of shalom, so it means that nothing makes sense or is right. Chaos or anarchy are often used in translation because they may best expressed the meaning of Ra. Anarchy or chaos reigned when the children of Israel strayed after false gods, when the seasons of the Lord and the appointed times were ignored.

When there is chaos in society the bullies take over, corruption and bribery are common, freedoms are restricted; immorality is the norm and there is no order and no justice in society.

The mild side of Ra could be described as the occasions in our lives when we feel that even though we can’t put our finger on it, there is just a feeling of things not being right.

The far end of Ra is when everything is wrong, as with an absolutely hopeless situation. In that case only a personal relationship with the living God can give us shalom/peace in our spirits.

It was a place where food and water were abundant, the environment was perfect, not too hot or too cold; you could say it was climate controlled. No striving was necessary. There were no enemies or threats or danger.

Eden – and – a place of rest..

also

a place of Grace/Chen

Shalom

 we enter in by

Grace

Chet Nun/Noon

Could a definition of Grace be EDEN? The original state of Grace from which we all are fallen?

The term falling from Grace is often used to describe what happened to Adam and Eve but it also includes everyone of us.

Eden/Grace was the calibre of the existence of true life as it was originally designed/ created to be.

Therefore the position is only re-attainable by Grace….which we know to be truth. Eph 2:8

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Amazing Grace – more amazing than we knew.

A literal state/place of being.

The Chen of God.

EDEN the place of grace/favor.

strongs # 2580

חֵן (chen) — favor, grace

We saw in a previous post that we enter in by or through Grace.

Do we literally enter into a spiritual environment of grace that surrounds us like a womb?

Jesus/Yeshua, tells us we enter in through the narrow gate/door.

This is entering into spiritual Eden.

We are in a way, going back

to also

get to the future,

back to Eden;

however it is the Eden of the future, yet the original Eden was not destroyed so maybe it still exists ….. We sometimes call it heaven? Eden was heaven on earth just has Jesus/Yeshua stated in the disciples prayer – on earth as it is in heaven, as above, so below…….

So the place,

‘Ha Makem’-המקום

where we fell from the state of grace, was an enclosure, a GAN, a garden, with protective walls made for a specific purpose.

Could it be said that the state of Grace therefore is Edenic in nature?

Because the state of Grace lacks nothing – therefore it would appear to be equal to shalom, (as we understand it by its definition). With nothing missing nothing broken, etc.

This is the place/state of being, of peace that passes understanding of the mind, that the world cannot know or experience or dwell in or have within; because as seen, everything outside of Eden is RA; which is resh ayin and is the complete opposite of shalom.

God planted a garden Genesis 2:8

GAN = enclosure..

Referring to the walls or fences that surround a grove of trees in ancient lands built to keep unwanted animals out.

The definitions of the letters in CHEN in Paleo Hebrew pictographs for an enclosure, a place of safety protection, includes the Paleo Hebrew picture of a fence and a seed.

Chet noon/nun

So have we by grace/chen entered spiritually into grace, the future eden? In Messiah we have returned to the pre-fall state, (back to Eden), so we might also call it the new Jerusalem or heaven.

Genesis 3:23. They were sent out of the garden because sin could not stay where the presence of God was manifested. So they had to leave. Eden was the garden of God then and it will be also in the future.

Grace had a meaning in that there was a boundary that encompassed it; this was true not only of Eden, but also the Israelites camp in the wilderness.

No sin could be within the camp where Gods’ presence was and which is why Messiah was was crucified outside the city walls/camp.

https://www.minimannamoments.com/the-mystery-of-solomons-chok/

The Garden of gethsemane was also outside the city camp/walls. (for more on Gethsemane link below.)

https://www.minimannamoments.com/sonset-sunrise-sunset-sonrise-apocalypse-of-the-tamid/

And the outside of the camp designation, did this mean there was no grace there?

There is so much more to this concept e.g. when we say glibly… But we are no longer under the law we are under Grace.

And also consider the statement made by Paul that God told him that His grace was sufficient for him….

To learn the definition of God’s grace, it is wise to understand the Greek and Hebrew words behind this term. A prominent Old Testament word describing God’s grace is chesed.

This word speaks of deliverance from enemies, affliction, or adversity. It also denotes enablement, daily guidance, forgiveness, and preservation; and in the Hebrew mindset it meant being able to be part of the community enclosure.

As we have seen the Hebrew word for grace is chen, חן

which derives from a shoresh(root), meaning favor, mercy, kindness, graciousness. In Exodus 34:6-7, one of the great attributes revealed about the LORD is that He is gracious (chanun), and in Psalm 86:15, David is no doubt reminded of this fact.

El Channuwm אֵֽל־ חַנּ֣וּן

 GRACIOUS GOD

2 Chronicles 30:9 Jonah 4:2

Strong’s Hebrew: 2587. חַנּוּן (channun)  gracious

Grace (χαρις) – We have to be on our guard against the supposition that grace is an abstract quality; it is an active personal principle, showing itself in our dealings with those by whom we are surrounded. … In the great proportion of passages in which the word grace is found in the New Testament, it signifies the unmerited operation of God in the heart of man, which is done through the agency of the Holy Spirit.

Greek for Grace (χαρις)  CHARIS literally means ‘favour’, to bend or stoop in kindness to another as a superior to an inferior. It has the idea of graciousness in manner or action.

It almost always means the power of salvation which finds expression in specific gifts and acts.

Recall The Hebrew word translated as grace is חן (hhen, Strong’s #2580) and is a two-letter parent root. חן (hhen) comes the verbal root חנה spelled exactly the same except with the addition of the letter ה (h) at the end. The following verse provides a good e.g. of the meaning of this verb.

And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. (KJV, Genesis 26:17)

Recall this verb means “to pitch a tent” or “to camp.” The noun derived from this verb is מחנה (mahhaneh, Strong’s # 4264).

When we think of a camp we think of tents scattered about in a general area, but the camps of the Ancient Hebrews were a little different as the picture below shows.

The tents were set up in a sort of circle

(a womb-like shape)

and these tents serve as a wall/fence, separating and protecting the inside of the camp from the outside.

At this point it may help to look at the pictographic Hebrew script again which was used to originally write the word חן (hhen).

The first letter is the letter hhet/chet, which was written as

and is a picture of a wall,

having the meaning of separation

as the wall separates the inside from the outside.

The second letter is the letter nun, which was written as

and is a picture of a sprouting seed having the meaning of continue as the seed continues a lineage to the next generation; (as does the seed when planted in the womb).

When these two letters are combined they mean

the wall that continues.

The tents in the picture above are a wall that continues around the camp.

A second verbal root derived from the parent root חן (hhen) is חנן (Hh.N.N, Strong’s #2603), spelled exactly the same except with the addition of the letter ן (n) at the end and Channah H2580

This verb is often translated as to be gracious or have mercy, however these are abstract terms and do not help us understand the meaning of this verb from an Hebraic perspective, which always relates words to something concrete.

One of the best tools to use to find the more concrete meaning of a word is to look at how that word is paralleled with other words in poetical passages. In the following verses the translation of the verb חנן (Hh.N.N) are underlined and the word that it is paralleled with will be in black.

Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed. (KJV, Psalm 6:2)

Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper. (KJV, Psalm 30:10)

But thou, O LORD, be merciful unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them. (KJV, Psalm 41:10)

Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. (KJV, Psalm 57:1)

O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid. (KJV, Psalm 86:16)

Through this process we find that this Hebrew verb is paralleled with such ideas as healing, help, being lifted up, finding refuge, strength and salvation (literally rescue).

From a concrete Hebraic perspective, חנן (Hh.N.N) means all of this, which we can sum up with providing protection. Where does one run to for protection? The camp, and now we see how חנה (Hh.N.H), the camp, and חנן (Hh.N.N), protection, are related. We also need to see how these words are related to the parent root חן (hhen).

A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it… (KJV, Proverbs 17:8)

In this verse, the Hebrew word ‫חן (hhen) is translated as precious, something of beauty and value.

A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches. (KJV, Proverbs 11:16)

In this verse the grace, or beauty, of the woman is contrasted with the strength of a man.

Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. (KJV, Proverbs 31:30

Again, this Hebrew word is being paralleled with beauty and this beauty is something that is precious and graceful, which is exactly how the Hebrews would have seen the camp of protection, a graceful and precious place.

Now we will return to our original definition of the English word grace.
