Afikomen – Mysterious and Hidden

Most Christian believers know what is meant by ‘taking communion’, or ‘the Lord’s supper’ or ‘the breaking of bread and drinking of wine’.

However what is not always taught is that it is rooted in, and has its’ origins in, the Passover meal of the Israelites Pesach Seder.

Also called Pesah, Pesakh – פֶּסַח and pronounced Pay-sak.

Seder סֵדֶר

pronounced SEE-dur-(seyder);

Seder is a Hebrew root word meaning order/arrangement..the same root from which the word siddur comes, meaning: prayer book.

Passover begins on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Nisan

(late March or early April in the Gregorian calendar).

Passover is celebrated for seven days in Israel.

In the same way Israelites have celebrated Passover as a celebration of freedom observed by Jews everywhere.

The name derives from the story of the angel of death passing over the homes of Hebrews; when the 10th plague, the death of the first-born children, came upon the Egyptians.

However many are not aware of how it is connected and integral to the Lords supper/ communion. This is because many have not yet accepted Yeshua as Messiah. They are not aware of the implications of, and the messianic secrets revealed in the Seder and in the order sequence of the Meal itself.

It is not a sumptuous 5+ course-style banquet, but contains symbols of remembrance of the miracles that the Lord performed for the children of Israel as they were leaving Egypt.

The telling of the Passover story.

The Maggidמטיף – Hebrew: maggīdh – literally, narrator, messenger, is the highlight of the Seder

The Seder, which follows a carefully prescribed series of steps, includes a dinner of highly symbolic foods that are prepared on a Seder plate.

There are different versions and some have 14 steps and some 15.

The Sages designed the Passover Seder as 15 steps to make a participant enormously successful and the key to unlocking the code is that Passover is the time when each Jew embarks on a personal journey from slavery to freedom.

The Haggadah, which is pronounced ha-gah-da, is a small book that is used at the Passover table each year.

The Haggadah – הַגָּדָה – means: The telling.

And it’s a fulfillment of the mitzvah – מִצְוָה, to each Israelite.

mitzvah – מִצְוָה

The first use is in Genesis 26:5 where God says that Abraham has “obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments (מִצְוֹתַי mitzvotai), my statutes, and my laws”.

The charge to tell your son, of the Hebrews liberation from slavery in Egypt; as described in the Book of Exodus in the Torah.

“And thou shalt tell thy son in that day, saying: It is because of that which the LORD did for me when I came forth out of Egypt.” Ex. 13:8).

Ha Laḥma Anya

מָא הָאלַחְ עַנְיָא  

‘This is the bread of affliction‘…

(literally: Behold the poor bread)

are the opening words of a declaration in Aramaic, designating the matzah as the bread of affliction and inviting the needy to join the meal.

Ha lachma anya, d’akhla avatana b’ar’a d’mitzrayim.

This is the bread of affliction, which our fathers ate in the land of Egypt.

It ends with:

This year we are here, next year may we be in the Land of Israel. This year we are slaves, next year may we be free men.

The outlines of the steps of the Passover Seder.

1 Kaddesh (Sanctifcation):The word is derived from the Hebrew root Qof-Dalet-Shin, meaning holy.

Kiddush: (Blessing over wine) Blessed are You, O Lord our God, (Ruler/King or) Sovereign of the universe, creator of the fruit of the vine.

This is a blessing over wine in honor of the holiday.
The first cup, the Kiddush, of wine is drunk, and a second cup is poured.
The 4 cups of wine, known in Hebrew as arba kosot.

2 Urechatz (Washing), A washing of the hands without a blessing, in preparation for eating the Karpas.
3 Karpas (Vegetable): A vegetable (usually parsley) is dipped in salt water and eaten. The vegetable symbolizes the lowly origins of the Jewish people; the salt water symbolizes the tears shed as a result of our slavery. Parsley is a good vegetable to use for this purpose, because when you shake off the salt water, it looks like tears.
4 Yachatz (Breaking): One of the three matzahs on the table is broken.

Part is returned to the pile, the other part is set aside for the Afikomen.

Matzot that have been placed in a white bag called a matzah tosh are taken out and shown to everyone.

The leader then says.

This Is the lechem oni – the bread of affliction – which our forefathers ate in the land of Egypt.

All who are hungry – let them come and eat. All who are needy – let them come and celebrate Passover with us.

Very significant of Jesus/Yeshuas’ declaration “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. (John 6:35) To eat these promises is to eat this living bread and live forever (John 6:51).


5 Maggid (
The Story): A retelling of the story of the Exodus from Egypt and the first Passover. This begins with the youngest person asking The Four Questions, a set of questions about the proceedings designed to encourage participation in the seder. The Four Questions are also known as Mah Nishtanah. (Why is it different?), which are the first words of the 

The Four Questions –

Mah Nishtanah  מה  נשתנה .

Mah nishtanah halaylah hazeh mikol halaylot.

(Pronounced: Mah Nishtanah Ha-lailah ha-zeh mee-kol ha-leilot.)
Mah Nishtanah, are the first two words in a phrase meaning Why is tonight different from all other nights? usually asked by the youngest guest. Then the seder leader replies by asking what differences they notice. There are variations on the questions, however the youngest person then replies that there are four ways in which they notice a difference about Passover:
On all other nights we eat bread or matzah, while on this night we eat only matzah?
 She-bechol halaylot anu ochlim chametz o matzah, halaylah hazeh kulo matzah?
On all other nights we eat all kinds of vegetables and herbs, but on this night we have to eat bitter herbs?
 She-bechol halaylot anu ochlim she’ar yerakot, halaylah hazeh maror?
On all other nights we don’t dip our vegetables in salt water, but on this night we dip them twice?
She-bechol halaylot ain anu matbilin afilu pa’am echat, halaylah hazeh shtei pe’amim?
On all other nights we eat while sitting upright, but on this night we eat reclining?
 She-bechol halaylot anu ochlim bain yoshvin u-vain mesubin, halaylah hazeh kulanu mesubin – מסובין?
The fourth “question” refers to the ancient custom of eating while reclining on one elbow. It symbolizes the concept of freedom and refers to the idea that Jews would be able to have a celebratory meal while relaxing together and enjoying each others’ company.

This question became part of The Four Questions after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. Originally the fourth question, mentioned in the Talmud (Mishnah Pesachim 10:4) was: “On all other nights we eat meat which has been roasted, stewed, or boiled, but on this night we eat only roasted meat.”
This original question referred to the practice of sacrificing the Paschal lamb at the Temple, a practice that ceased after the Temple’s destruction. Once the sacrificial system was abandoned the rabbis replaced the fourth question with one about reclining during the Passover seder.
6 Rachtzah (Washing): A second washing of the hands, this time with a blessing, in preparation for eating the matzah.
7 Motzi Matzah (Blessings over Grain Products and Matzah): The ha-motzi blessing, a generic blessing for bread or grain products used as a meal, is recited over the matzah. A blessing specific to matzah is recited, and a bit of matzah is eaten.

8 Maror (
Bitter Herbs): A blessing is recited over a bitter vegetable (usually raw horseradish; sometimes romaine lettuce), and it is eaten. This symbolizes the bitterness of slavery. The maror is eaten with charoses, a mixture of apples, nuts, cinnamon and wine, which symbolizes the mortar used by the Jews in building during their slavery

9 Korech (Sandwich): some maror on a piece of matzah is eaten with some charose. The sandwich used to include a piece of the paschal offering (Lamb). As there are no more animal sacrifice, so there is no paschal offering included.

10 Shulchan Orech (Dinner): is a simple meal, gefilte fish and matzah ball soup are traditionally eaten.

11 Tzafun (
Dessert):The piece of matzah set aside earlier is eaten as “dessert,” the last food of the meal. Different families have different traditions relating to the afikomen. Some have the children hide it, while the parents have to either find it or ransom it back. Others have the parents hide it. The idea is to keep the children awake and attentive throughout the pre-meal proceedings, waiting for this part.

12 Barech (Grace): The third cup of wine is poured, (the Ge’ullah – Redemption) and grace after meals is recited. This is similar to the grace that would be said on any Sabbath. At the end, a blessing is said over the third cup and it is drunk. The fourth cup is poured, including a cup set aside for the prophet Elijah, who is supposed to herald the Messiah, and is supposed to come on Passover to do this. The door is opened for a while at this point (supposedly for Elijah, but historically because Jews were accused of nonsense like putting the blood of Christian babies in matzah, and we wanted to show our Christian neighbors that we weren’t doing anything unseemly).
13 Hallel (Song):Several psalms are recited. Yehallelukha Adonai Eloheinu al Kol Ma’asekha (“All Thy works shall praise Thee”) is a benediction of praise, or Nishmat Kol Ḥai (“The breath of all that lives”), is the Nishmat hymn – Birkat ha-Shir.

A blessing is recited over the last cup of wine and it is drunk.

14 Nirtzah (Closing): A simple statement that the seder has been completed, with a wish that next year, Pesach may celebrated in Jerusalem meaning that the Messiah will come within the next year.

For believers in Messiah it is the fulfillment of the Passover lamb by His own sacrifice.

So all the elements have a particular and specific meaning to them and are significant for both the original and spiritually fulfilled Passover thousands of years apart.

The Mysterious hidden Afikomen  אפיקומן ; pronounced: ah-fi-co-men.

During the 4th part of the seder meal (called Yachatz – divide), a plate of unleavened bread is lifted up.

On it are three pieces of matzah stacked On top of each other.

The Seder leader takes the middle piece, calls out “Yachatz,” and breaks it in half.

Splitting the matzah is a memorial to the splitting of the sea.

These various understandings of Yachatz underscore that both slavery and salvation are within the broken matzah, thereby highlighting the central theme that salvation can instantly emerge from the most abject situations of suffering.

“lehecm oni”, (“Poor Man’s Bread”), the Gemarah in Maseches Pesachim (115b) derives that the matzah of seder night must be broken: “ma darko shel ani beprusa…just as a poor person eats a broken piece of a loaf, so too matzah must be eaten as a broken piece”.

Afikomen  אפיקומן means:

That which comes after!

At the Passover seder table, three matzahs are placed in a stack, inside a special bag called a matzah tosh.

Before it is broken the following is said.

This is the bread of brokenness…… 

These 3 are said to represent Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The middle one representing Isaac, is broken to recall how he was offered himself in sacrifice in obedience to the will of his father! The binding of Isaac is a clear picture of how Jesus/Yeshua yielded Himself to be sacrificed by God, His Father.

Consider how the Akedah provides a prophetic picture of the Lord Jesus as the Lamb of God – SEH haELOHIM, who takes away the sins of the world. John 1:29.

Both Isaac and Jesus were born miraculously,

both were only begotten son’s,

both were to be sacrificed by their fathers of Mount Moriah;

both were to be resurrected on the third day. (Genesis 22:5; Hebrews 11:17 – 19).

Both willingly took up the means of his execution, both demonstrate that one life can be sacrificed for another –the ram for Isaac and Jesus for all mankind.

Another tradition is that the three matzot represent the people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, respectively. This raises some questions; why would the priests be depicted as broken in this case? Isn’t Jesus/Yeshua the high priest of our confession? (Hebrews 3:1) Didn’t He provide eternal redemption by means of shedding His Blood in the Holy of Holies made without hands? (Hebrews 9:11–12; 10:11–12, 21–23).

Why would the symbolism of the broken priests included in the Passover Seder? Didn’t the prophet Isaiah in chapter 53 foretell that the Messiah would be wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities and by His stripes we are healed?

Could it be a reference to a broken corrupt system that Messiah came to heal in more ways than one?

In the Hebrew mindset the middle of something is it’s heart. LEV. When the middle matzah is broken it’s a reminder to all believers of how the Fathers’ heart must have been broken to see the pain that Jesus/Yeshua endured by taking our sins upon Him at the cross. We looked previously at the matzah and the stripes and the holes in it and their significance.

Remembering that like the unleavened bread, He was pure without any trace of leaven in it, as His body was without any sin. This is the LEV, the HEART of the Passover message It is the LEV – HEART of the gospel.

The larger piece of this matzah is called the afikomen. The smaller half is returned to its place between the other two matzahs, and the larger half is placed in a bag,

or wrapped in a cloth,

and then it is set aside to be eaten as a dessert after the meal.  It is in commemoration of the paschal sacrifice. Set aside so it does not get mixed up with the other pieces on the table.

In ancient biblical times, the Passover sacrifice used to be the last thing consumed during the Passover seder during the First and Second Temple eras. The afikomen is a substitute for the Passover sacrifice according to the Mishnah in Pesahim 119a.
The practice of hiding the afikomen was instituted during the Middle Ages by Jewish families to make the seder more entertaining and exciting for children, who can become antsy when sitting through a long ritual meal. 

The Afikomen has been part of the Passover since the second Temple times that would’ve been part of the Passover service during the time of Yeshua. The Greek word used in the New Testament is aphikomenos it is a participle that means he is coming that has definite messianic nuances.

Was it symbolic of a divine Trinity?

This is certainly possible as an image of hashilush hakodesh – the three fold/ triune nature of God; having the focus on the broken middle piece of the matzah, which is a picture of suffering Messiah Yeshua Ha Mashiach.

When we consider that this piece is taken and wrapped up and carefully hidden from view only to be discovered at the end of the Passover seder by little children.

This surely is the image of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus/Yeshua from the dead. It is only after partaking of the lamb of God who was slain for our transgressions and sins; do we understand and take hold of the reward given to those to seek for Him.

If so, then that which pointed to the second part of the trinity, is broken and it is even given a name – called by Afikomen.

It was saving the best until last and to be looked forward to, as something special and to be rejoiced over when found and consumed! (Very symbolic!)

The broken matzah wrapped in a cloth or napkin, was also as a remembrance of the way the Israelites left Egypt with their soon-to-be matzahs, as described in the Torah:

‘The people picked up their dough when it was not yet leavened, their leftovers bound in their garments on their shoulders.’

Depending on the family, either the leader usually the head of the household in the group hides the afikomen during the meal or the children at the table “steal” the afikomen and hide it. Not every family ascribes to the ‘stealing’ part so as not to encourage stealing as being acceptable behavior.
If the seder leader hid the afikomen the children at the table must search for it and bring it back. They receive a reward (usually candy, money or a small gift) when they bring it back to the table. Likewise, if the children “stole” the afikomen, the seder leader ransoms it back from them with a reward so that the seder can continue. 

This ransom or reward is indicative of Mark 10:45.

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.

Yeshua/Jesus is recorded in Matthew 20:28 and Mark 10:45 referring to Himself asa ransom for many,”

When it is found they remove the cloth wrapped around it revealing the broken Afikomen. Once the afikomen is returned to the seder table, each guest receives a small portion at least the size of an olive.

This is done after the meal and normal deserts have been eaten so that the last taste of the meal is matzah.

After the broken afikomen is eaten, the Birkas haMazon (grace after meals) is recited and the seder is concluded.

It is only at this point that the Passover is complete!

Although the afikoman represents the Israelites liberation from Egyptian exile.

That redemption, however, was not a complete one, as they are still awaiting the final redemption with the coming of Moshiach.

Setting aside or hiding the larger half of the matzah reminds us that the best, the real redemption, is yet to come, still hidden in the future.

The symbolism is clear as they all would have understood the references to the broken matzah was the action taken by Jesus/Yeshua as He sat with His disciples, taking the middle piece he broke it and said;

This is My Body broken for you.

Then it was wrapped in cloth just as His broken body would be wrapped in a burial cloth not many hours later.

The broken matzah was hidden away just as His body was placed in the tomb hidden from view. Messiah has been hidden from His people for over 2,000 years and many have not found Him yet…

As before stated, the Passover Seder cannot be complete without finding Afikomen and and returned to the table so each guest can eat a piece of it. So Israel as a nation cannot find its completion without the Messiah. This signifies that the Jewish people will search for their missing Messiah, their Afikomen and they will fulfill their destiny as He is revealed to them.

Afikomen is actually a Greek word which as mentioned earlier means that which comes after.

Hebrew: אֲפִיקוֹמָן, based on Greek epikomon [ἐπὶ κῶμον] or epikomion [ἐπικώμιον], meaning “that which comes after” or “dessert”) is a half-piece of matzo which is broken in two during the early stages of the Passover Seder and set aside to be eaten as a dessert after the meal. a word that comes from the Greek word for “dessert.”

It is so called not because it is sweet, but because it is the last item of food eaten at the Passover seder meal.

Zechariah 12:10 Luke 22:19; Romans 11: 25-26.

Messiah is not among His people at this point BUT.. He will be, because…

He is the Afikomen,

the One who comes after,

and He WILL come again.

Similarly as with Passover, so it is with all to whom He comes.

Only in His coming can we find our completion.

When He is found – He is the missing piece/peace/shalom; and He is the one broken for us. The Afikomen of our lives.

The conclusion,

the completion,

for we are complete in Him.

The matzah is the bread of communion, some call it the Eucharist from the Greek word Eucharista. It is in the scripture, however, it has nothing to do with the bread.

Psalm 136, Luke 22:14–23,  1Timothy 6:6–8. It is what He spoke over the bread.

Eucharista means to give thanks or say a blessing and it is what has been the traditional Hebrew Blessing for millennia. The confusion maybe because Jesus/Yeshua said it over the bread and it is not the bread itself; then tradition, doctrine and dogma take over and we miss the truth of the root meaning.

The Israelites have said this Hebrew Blessing/ Eucharista for a long time and it is called the MOTZI.

HaMotzi Pronounced: ha-MOE-tzee

The traditional HaMotzi blessing is recited before eating bread (or bread stuffs) and is one of the most frequently said of the Hebrew blessings, used for Shabbat, holidays, and other occasions:

That bread was unleavened bread. Unleavened bread is any of a wide variety of breads which are prepared without raising or leavening agents; (ingredients that cause flour to rise); such as yeast, baking soda, baking powder and beaten egg whites. 

  Known as Matzah within the Jewish community–it represents a symbolic element with great importance. Unleavened breads are generally flat breads; however, not all flat breads are unleavened.

Round Matzah bread for Passover

This is probably what Jesus/Yeshua would have said over the unleavened bread.

Hamotzi (Blessing over bread)

Blessed are You, O Lord our God, (Ruler/King or) Sovereign of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

Phonetic Hebrew transliteration: Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-alom ha-motzi lechem min ha-aretz.

This is an indication that the emphasis is not the bread itself that is the most important it is the blessing of thanks that is.

Luke 12:15, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.

God is the author and preserver of man’s life; goods are not.  But of the place and position and fullness of the giver in the life of the receiving believer. What is important is how much thanks we give for what we have. Spiritual poverty is worse than physical poverty.

In Messiah we are rich and prosperous spiritually because the bread, the Afikomen that He spoke the Eucharista over was the symbol of His suffering and death and He knew it and still gave thanks for it, knowing what He was about to go through.

The Power secrets of the Eucharista is in it’s meaning for Thanksgiving and those who give thanks in all things, bring the power of God into a curse and turn it into a blessing. In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 1Timothy 6:6 -8

The hidden Afikoman of eucharista is Messiah the blessing of the one….

who returned from the tomb, and will soon return to us again, the Afikomen will return to complete our Passover seder….the blessing of that which comes after.

The Hebrew word for sunrise is זְרִיחָה, (zuree-chah), which comes from the simple verb לִזְרוֹחַ meaning:

to shine or to rise, when referring to the sun.

The Hebrew word for sunset is הַשְּׁקִיעָה(shash-kee yah), literally, the setting.

Sunset is termed שְׁקִיעַת הַחַמַּה – the setting of the sun.

  שקיעה is the noun form of the verb לִשְׁקוֹעַ, meaning to sink, or to settle in a low place.

Strong’s Hebrew: 6942. קָדַשׁ (qadash) — to be set apart or consecrated

Nisan or Nissan, נִיסָן – ni’-san, (nican), in Hebrew has a meaning of renewal – a beginning. Today, new year begins in January but in the Bible, in Torah, it was not that way.

Nisan is the 7th month in the Hebrew Civil calendar and the 1st month in the Torah – spiritual Calendar.

The sign of Nissan is a Lamb.

Strong’s #07716 – Lamb – Seh –  שֶׂה – SHIN – HEY – BEHOLD GOD.

In the shamayim/heavens, the sign of the Lamb of God is the heavenly constellation of stars called Aries. Passover was the sign of the Lamb of God in Egypt.

The ram provided to Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah in Israel was the prophetic sign of God providing the future sacrifice for sin and for reconciliation of relationship through Jesus’s/Yeshua’s death on the cross as Redeemer.

Lambs graze in a flock, faithfully following the shepherd.

Being a follower is sometimes a mature choice, not a passive failure. The Israelites made the choice to follow God.

When God created the world, His plan was that we choose to know Him.

The month of Nisan is the 1st month of the spiritual year and in Hebrew, Spring called AVIV.

אביב AVIV, derived from the word abīb, actually translates as the season of SPRING. From the Hebrew word ābhībh literally, ear of grain also meaning an ear, or a time of year where grains come into ear, commonly known as Aviv, (or Nisan, the 1st month of the Hebrew calendar). (Notably seen in Place Names in Israel e.g. Tel Aviv).

After the Babylonian exile, the new name for Abib/Aviv, was Nisan/Nissan. Although this name is technically of Babylonian origin, the Aramaic word Nissan is related to the Hebrew word, nitzan, (נִצָּן) meaning bud. In Song of Songs, King Solomon’s epic poem in which he depicts the love that bonds us to God, redemption is symbolically referred to as “the time that the buds were seen in our land,” which means that the earth gave birth to a people who would soon blossom or flower.

Another derivation is from the word nissim (נִסִּים) meaning miracles, and by definition is the month of miracles. Both of these suggest freshness and renewal physical and spiritual resurrection in our lives.

In Aviv, אביב the first month is NISAN and the 1st Feast/Appointed Time of the Lord is…

Pesach – Passover – פֶּסַח – Pesah, Pesakh.

It is a paradox because although it’s the genesis of the year and the Appointed time of New Beginnings; it is also the time of the end of Messiah’s life, (earthly); and it is also the beginning – genesis – beresheet – בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית – of life (eternal).

It all began – genesis – beresheet – in a garden..גַּן, we know as Eden..עֵדֶן

גַּן עֵדֶן, Gan ʿEḏen 

 Here in Gan Eden, God formed ha’adam the first אדם adam.

The Hebrew word for earth is adama.

The Hebrew word for man derived from Hebrew אדם  adam meaning “to be red“, referring to the ruddy color of human skin, or from Akkadian adamu meaning “to make”

The Garden of Eden was the 1st of 3 specific and important Gardens, the beginning of the end was in a garden

..and the end of the beginning also began in a garden.

in the 3rd and last garden (tomb), was Messiah, the last adam. 

The first man, Adam, became a living person, and the last Adam (Christ in the flesh) became a spirit that gives life.1 Cor. 15:45

Our Father planted the very first garden. He is THE Gardener/Vinedresser/Husbandman. John 15:1; I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.

Vinedresser is just one way to translate the Greek word used by Jesus (Yeshua). It can also mean Gardener, Farmer, and Husbandman (KJV). It is a generic word for someone who tends plants.

Jer.33:15;  And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
Is 53:2; He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and He is called “the Branch of the Lord“. Is.11:1; Heb.12:24; Zech. 3:8, “I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH, and 6:12; Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH.
A Branch, or the Branches of a tree, are the glory of a tree. Messiah, the Son of man, being the real offspring and son of David according to the flesh, is the glory of all David’s race, and of the whole church of God in general. Matthew 22:45.

My Father is the Husbandman, not simply the ἀμπελουργός, or vinedresser, but also γεωργός, the owner of the land as well.

Jesus is the Word /Yeshua is Torah. He is the Tree of Life/Etz Chaim to all who take hold of Him and eat of Him. The tree of Life in gan Eden whose fruit would give eternal life.

but there is one Biblical place in particular which takes its name from another garden. that of GAT SHMANIM

This was the garden of Gethsemane – Gatshmanim

Strong’s Hebrew: 2132. זַ֫יִת (zayith) — olive tree, olive

Below looking up the Kidron Valley towards Gethsemane, Jerusalem is to the left.

Gethsemane is changed into English from two Hebrew words: GAT and SHMANIM. It means ‘the place where olive oil is pressed‘.

A further insight into the Hebrew words GAT and SHMANIM, reveals GAT, as a Hebrew word by itself (Hebrew: גת – gimel, tav), which means a winepress.

SHMANIMשמנים –  means oils, and is the plural IM – ים, of the singular Hebrew word שֶׁמֶן SHEMEN, for oil.

A literal translation of GAT SHMANIM would be winepress of oils.

 However, it refers to a pressing-method far more violent than the crushing of grapes underfoot.

This is one Biblical place in particular that takes its name from GAT SHMANIM

olive – zayit – זית – zah’yeet

Also the symbol of peace, light and longevity together with the dove (יוֹנָה – yona) which brought Noah an olive leaf after the flood, (Genesis 8:11). 
Some olive trees have been known to live for more than 2,000 years, maybe even there when Jesus/ Yeshua walked among them.

Pictured below is a replica of a first-century olive press (בֵּית בַּד beit bahd) in modern day Israel.

The stone weights suspended from the beam likely exert more than 1 ton (2,204 lbs/907 Kilos) of pressure on the olives.

Each one requires multiple people to move.

The shemen gat – meaning: the winepress (gat), of oil (shemen.)

Where His suffering began.

It is located on a slope of the Mount of Olives just across the Kidron Valley from Jerusalem.

Here He surrendered His will. In the face of the approaching will of the Father.

Isaiah 53:10-12

The Lord was pleased to bruise him; he has put him to grief [or: caused his pain]; when he makes himself an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, he shall prolong his days; the pleasure [picking up on the first line] of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he has put him to grief: when you shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

The Father was pleased to bruise the Son for our iniquities, and the Son was pleased to be bruised by the Father’s will. As we heard on Monday, Jesus had a choice. He chose to have the iniquity of us all laid on Him.

The arrest was the beginning –

the genesis – beresheet – בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית

– of the end…of the beginning.

Leviticus 8:10–12; Luke 22:39–44.

The garden was not a garden in our western understanding. It was an olive grove, a place where the olives from the trees that grew there, were made into oil.

Jews would extract this oil by placing sacks of freshly-picked olives underneath a massive, wooden beam which they would pull down using heavy stone weights to crush both olives and their pits with tremendous force.

It was the place of the oil press. The word for oil in Hebrew is Shemen.

The word for Press in Hebrew is GAT. Oil press is a gat shemen, or a gatshmanim.

The olives would be placed on top of the Big Stone and a large ‘wheel like’ stone would roll over them, crushing them.

The crushing of the olives would cause them to release their oil.

So the meaning of Gethsemane is the oil press.

There is a secret in the meaning connected to Yeshua, as the word Messiah is linked to oil, gat;

to Olive oil, to shemen, and it’s no coincidence it is the place where the suffering began – because it was the place of crushing. The olive press, is the place where His crushing began.

First the crushing of His will and then the crushing of His life.

Oil is also linked to healing and joy.

And to anointing oil which is the most sacred holy (set apart) use. Oil was poured over those set apart ones who were to be prophets priests and kings. This oil in its highest form of symbolism signifies the Holy Spirit being poured out.

The hidden mystery of the gospel was and is now revealed, the crushing of Messiah in the oil press of Gethsemane would be and is linked to joy and healing in the anointing and outpouring of the Holy Spirit/Ruach HaKodesh.

It began with the oil of the olives crushed in the press, so every desire and ambition not of God, must be surrendered and crushed.

And in the crushing, the set apart, (Holy/ Kodesh), ones will be filled, anointed with oil and released by the Holy Spirit/Ruach HaKodesh to fulfil His Will, Plans and Purposes.

Kodashim (Hebrew: קדשים ‎, “Holy Things)

As the disciples slept in the garden,

Jesus/Yeshua poured out His soul to His Father, in agony. Luke writes, 

Hematidrosis is the incredibly rare medical phenomenon, where extreme stress causes a person’s skin to release blood in sweat; few humans have ever experienced the levels of stress needed to cause it.

Yet as Jesus/Yeshua prayed,

“My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may Your will be done,” 

the unthinkable pressure of the weight of all our sins crushed Messiah,

pressing out His life and blood like olive oil flowing from a press.

GAT SHMANIM could not have been more aptly named!

As the heavy weights hung from the wooden beam of an ancient olive press crushed olives underneath,

the weight of our sins crushed Jesus/Yeshua as He hung upon the wooden beams of the cross.

Jesus/Yeshua’s Blood was poured out for us like olive oil, as

 He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. – Isaiah 53:5-6

Yet His blood is worth far more than oil; it is our Salvation,

our hope,

and our light!

Messiah,  מָשִׁיחַ = Christ = anointed one = Mashiach, Mah-she-AKH = anointed one.

So the Messiah = the anointed one, just as Christ does. Greek = christos.

Jesus comes from Yeshua. Jesus Christ is Yeshua ha Mashiach or Jesus the Messiah = Jesus the anointed. Anointed = oil. With olive oil.

The apocalypse (revealing) of the mystery of the TAMID – תָּמִיד – taw-meed’

Messiah is the lamb but not only that for He is also our TAMID.

The eastern side of the temple faced the Garden of Gethsemane

it was also the side closest to the location of the altar of sacrifice.

It is sobering to note that every time Yeshua/Jesus was upon the Mt. of Olives in the Garden at Gethsemane He was looking directly at the altar of sacrifice.

Ex. 29:38–39; Mark 15:25–37; Rev. 7:9–17;

the Torah called for two lambs…

Offer one in the morning and the other twilight.

This is called the law of the TAMID. 

The Tamid was the name for the morning and evening sacrifice,

the first (Alef) and last (Tav)

that began and ended a series of daily sacrifices for the various sins and offerings of the people.

The Chamber of Lambs Once it has been established that the proper time has come for offering the tamid daily sacrifice, and the gates of the Sanctuary are open, the overseer instructs the priests who will be attending to the service: “Bring a lamb from the Chamber of Lambs!”

The halves of the Tamid were two lambs.

The 1st was offered in the morning at the third hour of the day.

With its death, the temple trumpets would sound and the temple gates were opened.

This was at 9am (the exact time Yeshua/Jesus was crucified and the cross lifted up)

and the 2nd at 3pm (the time Yeshua/Jesus died).

The beginning and end of every day in the Israelite community was marked by the reference to the tamid offering. In other words, at the outset of both the day at sunrise and sunset at night, their thoughts were directed upon God, which in fact was focused on the coming Messiah.

The daytime was divided into 12 seasonal hours, but the day division of hours was focused on the schedule of the Tamid sacrifice.

In the first century AD the night was divided into 4 night watches of 3 hours each:

(1) from sundown to 9PM;

(2) from 9PM to 12 midnight;

(3) from 12 midnight to 3AM; and

(4) from 3AM to dawn.

Tamid תָּמִיד (taw-meed’) Strongs 8548 means: continuity, continual, daily, perpetual, always, all times, forever.

He is our answer every day and forever. Our covering always and for eternity.

Just as the unblemished Tamid lamb was the standing sacrifice presented continually on the altar of sacrifice in the Jerusalem Temple, Messiah Yeshua/Jesus is the unblemished Lamb standing before the throne of God in the Temple of the heavens/shamayim.

Just as a lamb’s blood flows at the base of the altar, so too did Messiahs blood flow to the base of the cross.

For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul (Leviticus 17:11).

Hebrews 10:4 teaches that the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins.

The very fact that the Bible says the blood of bulls and goats cannot save is solid evidence that Messiah’s blood is 100% required, important and essential for our redemption.

His death alone is insufficient to save anyone. The blood had to be shed and applied to the mercy seat/ kapporet in the Heavens, just as it was required by the High Priest/Kohen HaGadol, in the Old Testament tabernacle/mishkan.

 After He died and a Roman soldier thrust a spear through Yeshua/Jesus’ side, piercing both the lungs and the heart, blood and water came from His side just as John recorded in his Gospel (John 19:34).

The spear that was thrust into His side, likely under His ribs,

could have ruptured the pericardial sack,

resulting in a flow of both blood and water.

This to fulfill scripture that of His identification with and healing for the brokenhearted. Also: Sin is passed on through the blood, that is why we say Adam passed the sin on to all.

1Jn 5:6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. Joh 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot….

He reveals to Nicodemus about a spiritual birth and gives an explanation for being born of water, referring to his need for spiritual cleansing. From then on it is possible to be born again in order to enter the kingdom of God. (John 19)

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. v. 7-8 KJV

The TAMID Sacrifice

From the Genesis in Gan Eden, later confirmed with the covenant at Sinai; Elohim set apart (made holy), a people who would be a picture for the world, and He taught them that sin could only be redeemed with the shedding of innocent blood.

The WAY to cleanse the wrong choices of those created in His image and likeness yet, a little lower than the angels.
This began the (prophetic) ritual of the Tamid,
a lamb for the first and last sacrifice of each day.

The Priests drew lots (PURIM), for various official duties, such as slaying the Tamid, sprinkling its blood, and cleansing the altar and the candlestick; the announcement of the time of slaying the morning sacrifice; the bringing of the sacrificial lamb,

(which was given to drink from a golden cup before it was killed;) and taking it to the place of sacrifice. 

This together with the statement, in conformity with

Ezek. 34:2, that no man ever passed through the postern on the southern side of the large door; how the opening of this great portal was heard as far as Jericho, as was the sound of the trumpets and other music of the Temple.

Then at the ninth hour, the evening sacrifice would be offered on the altar; at which time all the sacrifices would finish, the day complete.

At that point there were NO more sacrifices.

Morning lamb -9 AM, the third hour.

The same time Messiah was crucified.

So as the morning lamb was slain on the altar in the temple Messiah the lamb of God was lifted on the altar of the cross.

The trumpets sounded to announce the sacrifice and the temple gates were opened.

The evening lamb was killed at 9, our 3 PM, this is when He died.

His sacrifice began with the a.m. offering of the morning lamb. And ended with the p.m. offering of the evening lamb.

This was the point at which the WAY was RE-opened to God. And all took place during six hours of the temple sacrifices. RE-storation and RE-demption completed.

“But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.”  Hebrews 10:12

The Son of the Father, Creator of the morning sunrise and evening sunset
began a six-hour journey
In between the two lambs, in between the 2 suns for the 2 Sons, from the first to the last; the lamb of God was the ultimate sacrifice. And because His sacrifice was perfect, it was all in all, every sin and every offering was covered by His Blood.

He’s the one who died for many – the sacrifice for all. Nothing more is needed.

He is the TAMID the Son/sun,(shemesh), of Righteousness that Malachi 4:2 prophesied of the coming Messiah. 

He is connected to the sunset and sunrise of that Passover day in the order of evening and morning, of sunset,

when He was to sheqi’ah, sink, or to settle in a low place (the grave).

Then to the sunrise, when on the first day of the week, that resurrection dawning of the Sun,

He rose from the dead and (zarach/ come forth), as the morning came and the sunrise (to shine or to rise). The Son of God arose and shone.

Even from before the genesis in gan eden, the Tamid had a name. He was there at creation, for nothing was made without Him and when the plan was set in motion, He knew what His part would be…. Yeshua HaMashiach/Jesus the Messiah, the anointed one,

is our Tamid

From the Genesis/beginning, He revealed/apocalypse, the end/Revelation. For He is the Alef and the Tav – From Gan Eden to Gatshmanim/Gethsemane and to His rising from the GARDEN tomb with the sunrise – זְרִיחָה to shine or to rise,

זָרַח (zarach) — to rise, come forth

From long ago He told us things that had not yet happened, saying in essence, “My plan will stand, and I’ll do everything I intended to do.” And history will come full circle at the end of time to reveal Him and His Glory in the universe.

He has released upon us the Ruach Ha Kodesh for setting us apart and anointing us with His oil of gladness.

for HE did provide a Lamb

Hebrew phrase is literally translated as:

“lamb of THE God”.

שה האלוהים

The message for us is this, the only WAY to get into the garden is by going to the garden tomb first. We cannot get to the tomb until you have first gone to the cross by Way of gethsemane’s garden where we willingly give up/surrender our life/chaim. By dying to the old life, and crucifying the flesh life, by losing it and counting our old life as dead and gone.

This is the WAY to the garden of God and all it’s blessings. It’s the WAY/derek of the cross and always leads to life. (Chaim – lives, plural). The paradox and contradiction that death leads to life/chaim is summed up once again, in the fact that life, death and then life, were in the gardens and all had special trees, the end is the beginning, the Genesis, the garden, gan Eden; And here the mystery of the 3 gardens is revealed in Yeshua our Tanim, for He is the WAY of the Lamb, the truth and the CHAIM/ lifes.

Now we have a deeper understanding, this year let’s remember our Tamid at the coming Pesach and allow the fullness of the Son/sunshine to dawn and shine His resurrection glory,

on us,

in us

and through us,

as we celebrate..

Messiah our Tamid is RISEN indeed.

Secrets Of A Life Filled With Feasts

Are we living life to the full?

A moedim-chaim?

There are several scriptures where the length of our life appears to be given a specific number of years. One is in Psalms 90:10. The days of our years are three score years and ten, which equals 70 and we often this use as an indicator of human lifespan. The other sometimes referred to is in Genesis 6:3.

Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” (Berean Study Bible) So the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days shall be 120 years.”

Notice this verse does not explicitly teach that mankind’s lifespan was limited to 120 years, however what are we to do with what we are allotted?

Interestingly the 120 year timeline was given 120 years prior to the flood, so maybe it was referring to the fact that humanity as a whole only had another 120 years to live before the flood came and not to the length of years that an individual could live?

Whether this is correct or not, our lives do have structure when we are His own, as believers in Messiah.

Is there is a pattern for His Ecclesia in His Moedim? (Annual appointed times for every year?)

In the cycle of life, they are not only for seasons and times of harvest in the agricultural year but they are also for remembrance and rehearsal…

They are also for indicating the promise of future prophetic fulfillment. Do the Moedim/ 7 feasts/appointed times; also have a practical application to our individual lives?

Strong’s Hebrew: 4150. מוֹעֵד moed or Mow’ed: Appointed time, place.

There are many 7’s in the Scriptures.The KJV mentions the word 391 times.

The Gospel of Luke lists 77 generations from Adam to Jesus/Yeshua.

Gematria is a type of numerological study that may be defined as one of more systems for calculating the numerical equivalence of letters, words, and phrases in a particular Hebrew text and to finding hidden meanings in the numerical values of words.

Gematria works on the premise that the letters of the alphabet can also be used as numbers, and therefore words and phrases acquire distinctive numerical values.
A well known example is that of Revelation 13:18  Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of that beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six [666].

Proverbs has seven pillars of wisdom that are in the building of the house of the Lord which can now be applied to our physical bodies, as we are containers of His spirit – ruach, instead of the temple sanctuary of a literal stone building.

Torah – is the wisdom of God – understanding our life with wisdom – we are to get understanding – wisdom is for spiritual life.

The Ark of the Covenant

It was the heart of Gods’ shekinah presence.

 (Hebrew: אָרוֹן הַבְּרִית, Modern: Arōn Ha’brēt, Tiberian: ʾĀrôn Habbərîṯ),
also known as the Ark of the Testimony, is a gold-covered wooden chest with lid cover described in the Book of Exodus as containing the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments. The covenant on stone as Daniel saw in 2:34.

The Stone cut without human hands, is the child born without human hands. 

A virgin conception! 

The stone that was cut without human hands represents God’s kingdom.

This stone will replace all the earthly kingdoms (Revelation 21:1).

The renewed covenant written on hearts of flesh as prophesied by Jeremiah 31:33

Therefore entrance into the blessings of the Covenant, must come through Messiah Jesus/Yeshua/Yahshua alone, for He is the HEART of Torah.

The first letter of the Torah is b (and a v), a Bet (בּ) (bereishit –בְּרֵאשִׁית) Genesis; and the last letter of the Torah is l, a Lamed (ל) in the word יִשְׂרָאֵל – Israel . These 2 letters together spell the Hebrew word for heart which is l-v and lev with the vowel added.

The circumcision of the flesh regulation stated previously was a sign of the Abrahamic Covenant, but Christ circumcises those who have faith in Him, and this circumcision is of the heart [Rom 2:28-29] [Luke 22:20].

The seven pillars of His wisdom are continually maturing within our hearts and minds and as we become conformed to His image; this foundation gives place for the pillars of His life within us.

The pillars are integral to support the life of the spirit within. Cycling us continually towards His heart at the center of our beings. Returning to Him whenever we stumble or stray from His path.

Do the 7 pillars of wisdom perhaps also refer to the 7 Moedim?

Turn and keep on coming. Joel 2:12 AMPC. Therefore also now, says the Lord, turn and keep on coming to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning [until every hindrance is removed and the broken fellowship is restored].

Jerusalem is built on seven hills just as Rome is, one reflecting the natural world, the flesh and the devil principles.

The other Jerusalem is the spiritual type and also reflects the shadow of that which is to come.

Even the new Jerusalem is the final dwelling place of all that is complete in shalom.

Ezekiel prophesied of the Rebirth of Israel. He gives a chronological order of events from the rebirth of Israel to the construction of the third temple (which is the end of Ezekiel prophecies).
Israel’s restoration prophesied by Ezekiel was to be physical then followed by spiritual. Ezekiel 36:36-7 Prophecy to the Mountains of Israel. 36 “And you, son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel, and say, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord.
He prophesied of the hills!
and the people shall fill the waste cities as the flocks at the time of the great feasts covered the hills …

The 7 Moedim are an annual guide to the believer, both of that which has been fulfilled by Messiah; and also for the preparation and ongoing prophetic timeline on future events.

Taking another perspective, reveals that they also possibly hold the mystery of spiritual development, growth and maturity in each of our individual lives. Could this be one of the secrets to living a life fulfilled in the will of God?

Has God hidden the mystery of our life within the Hebrew year and His Moedim?

The annual cycle of the year begins with Passover – Pesach.

This is the beginning of our life in Him. It starts with salvation and as we receive the Lamb of God the pesach offering, our sins are taken away and we start a new life, sinless. The Power of the Passover/ pesach changes us and changes our future, our life will never be the same again. If it is, then consider if we are really walking in His provision, for out of true repentance comes the 180° turn around to go the other way the opposite direction.

The disciples, apostles, left the old way of life –leaving their nets behind them – have we left the things that held us? or have we compromised a little by simply adding Him into what we are content to remain with and want to keep and all we are familiar with? Can our families and friends see a change?? Are our lives really truly centered, focused and fulfilling the gospel word of Jesus/Yeshua? Or is our time with Him carefully slotted in and scheduled at our convenience?

The Moedim cycle of each and every year we live, presents an opportunity for reflection and change!

The power of Pesach truly releases us from bondage just as it did for the children of Israel coming out of Egypt. It ends the old life of slavery to sin and marks the beginning of a journey of life in and with God.

Pesach = Deliverance.

Set free to serve Him – willingly.

The second feast/ appointed time and level of our lives /walk/ journey with Him is our First fruits. Yom Resheet the day of first fruits the first day of the week of eating Unleavened Bread.

As we begin to walk in the power of His resurrection we begin to bear fruit in our lives.

The First Fruit of our salvation is the First Fruits of repentance and change.

First fruits of the unconditional love of the father flowing through us which pertains to life and all godliness in the image of Jesus. First fruits of the newness of life abundant, the joy of salvation and the glory of the father as we walk with Him. This is the first harvest. 

Omer count = Separation to Revelation.

Father will often separate us from old things in order to reveal to us new things and we become part of the ecclesia- the called out ones.

3rd Feast – next is our life experiences – Pentecost/Shavuot – the fire of the father in the form of the Ruach haKodesh.

Giving of the Spirit.

The promise from the Sinai covenant when Torah was first given.

He will baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire. Deep cleansing and preparation waiting on Him and learning among other things, patience!

Tarry here – we wait along the way for the infilling of the exousia, the raw power to make us ready, anointed and willing to do the works of God and to fulfill all that we have being called to be and do for His kingdom.

To go and make disciples, having first become one ourselves.

The fire burns away all the chaff from our hearts and enables the gold within to shine forth and empower us to reach forward for the next greater summer harvest in the life cycle.

The 4th harvest feast could be speaking of the harvest of our salvation as we GO forth for the fields white unto harvest but the workers are few.

Leviticus 23; Psalm 139:16

As we reap the rewards of blessing by giving life to others in sharing the true bounty of life abundant.

Fulfilling our calling in ministering both to the lost and to the Saints. 2 Cor.9:1; Heb.6:10.

This could represent the main period of our life as it continues and makes up the major content of our years.

Until we come into the fifth appointed time of our lives. Yom teruah the blowing of the shofar/ trumpet;

And then will come the time of trumpets, ‘the autumn’, ‘the fall’, of our salvation.

The golden years.

The finishing up of our reaping His harvest, the completing of its gathering in; and our time of preparation to meet our Heavenly Father.

Tying up the loose ends putting everything in order. Anything as yet left undone is quickly put in place, decently and in order. 

True shalom.

Nothing missing nothing broken, mislaid, misplaced or left undone. All is as it should be, no omissions or regrets, for soon will be upon us the remaining feasts in quick succession.

Yom kippur the day of atonement, the sixth appointed time of our life as we will stand alone before our heavenly father.

Panim al panim – face to face.

מָּנִים אֶלמָּֿנִים

Strong’s Hebrew: 6440. פָּנִים (panim or paneh) — face, faces

The Mercy Seat where the blood was sprinkled

Hebrew רחמים (pronounced rakhamim) is usually translated as “mercy.” Notice the IM! It’s actually plural in form, multiple mercies on the Ark of His Presence.

His MERCIES are new every morning!

In an earlier post we looked at Hebrew words including “face” (פנים, panim), “water” (מים, mayim), and even God (אלהים, elohim).

Then we shall behold Him, face to face. And see Him as He is. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 John 3:2; Rom. 14:10

It’s not in judgment for sin for we are already acquitted. (The great white throne judgment for those who are not His own, but the Bema seat of Christ, the judgment seat of Messiah, is for the works we have done in obedience to His call.)

The Holy fire of His presence will consume all that was not of His command and reveal only the gold of that which was His will. 1 Cor. 3:12-15

This leads us to Sukkot, 

the 7th and final appointed time in

 the lifecycle of a true believer will be to live, abide and stay with Him forever.

To Tabernacle in His presence, the booths containing His presence, His joy, His love, His blessings and its ultimate conclusion,

Shemini atseret – the eighth day of Sukkoth – the completion of reading Torah and Simchat Torah – the joy of the Torah.

The Eighth Day

8 represents a new beginning, meaning a new order or creation, and man’s true ‘born again’ event when he is resurrected from the dead into eternal life.  Eight is the personal number of Jesus. When we add together the letter values of the name Jesus in the Greek we get 888.

8th day– the great last day – eternity – the prophetic Torah complete – the day that celebrates the torah called, the joy of the torah, or rejoicing of/[with the]Torah

Hebrew: שִׂמְחַת תּוֹרָה שִׂמְחַת

and the new beginning* – enter the JOY of your Lord

as He says well done you good and faithful servant – no more tears only JOY.

*Simchat Torah or Simḥath Torah (also Simkhes Toreh, Hebrew: שִׂמְחַת תורָה, lit., “Rejoicing with/of the Torah,”) is a celebration marking the conclusion of the annual cycle of public Torah readings, and the beginning of a new cycle. Simchat Torah is a component of the Biblical Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret (“Eighth Day of Assembly”), which follows immediately after the festival of Sukkot in the month of Tishrei (mid-September to early October on the Gregorian calendar).

The Moedim and what they represent seem to be a cycle that should be an integral part of every believing ecclesia?

Although we are not to come under bondage again to the law as such; according to 2 Timothy 3:16. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

So the Moedim have value for our training.

His Word both the written word and the living Word are mirrors for us and we should hold them up in front of our lives to see if the reflection is that of Jesus/Yeshua in us, the hope of glory. He is in the Moedim, the very essence and fulfillment of them both in our lives and literally. He is the only Feast that truly satisfies.

He is the Word –

He is the Heart of the Word/Torah –

His life is The Word –

Written not on stone in an ark but on our hearts; and we are now the ark of His renewed covenant

The container of His Ruach/Spirit –

The 7 pillars of His wisdom supporting His life within –

The corner stone of our faith – not cut with hands –

We see Him as we walk through every one of His Moedim and finally to join us to Himself in the marriage of the Lamb on that last great day! Hallelujah!

A Mystery – How Messiah Takes Blue And Red Threads To Make Purple People.

There is not one insignificant detail from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21.  Everything in scripture tells us something about Messiah. Hebrew is a pictograph language (picture writing), so colors also have meaning and a significant role in the text.

From the High Priest’s garments to the furnishings, coverings, curtains, implements; everything in the colors of the Mishkan /Tabernacle of Moses, was designed according to God’s exact specifications given to Moses on Mt. Sinai.

The instructions for the color of the veils or curtains in the Tabernacle were to be blue, purple and red or scarlet.

Exodus 26:1
“Moreover you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine woven linen and blue, purple, and scarlet thread; with artistic designs of cherubim you shall weave them.”

““You shall make a veil woven of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen. It shall be woven with an artistic design of cherubim.”

There were three main colors:  Blue, purple and scarlet, woven throughout the tabernacle from it’s coverings and curtains to the garments of the high priest.  A fourth color, the pure white linen which is not readily visible, served as the foundation of every fabric.

The cloth made for the Mishkan/Tabernacle was woven with the finest tiny threads of blue and red and when they’re positioned so close together they appear to be purple.

Purple is the joining, the melding, combining and blending of blue and red.

of the place of reconciliation,

was called the Tent of Meeting – it was literally where:

spiritual met physical –

Divine met human –

God met man.

Two realities –

Two realms –

Two dimensions connected.

Shemoth (Exodus) 35:25-26 And all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen.

Linen was white.

White speaks of purity and righteousness.

And every skillful woman spun with her hands, and they all brought what they had spun in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. All the women whose hearts stirred them to use their skill spun the goats’ hair.

10 An excellent wife who can find?
She is far more precious than jewels. . . .
13 She seeks wool and flax,
and works with willing hands. . . .
19 She puts her hands to the distaff,
and her hands hold the spindle. . . .
21 She is not afraid of snow for her household,
for all her household are clothed in scarlet.

The order was consistently the same Blue, Purple, Red/Scarlet; from right to left, as with Hebrew writing.

Blue is the color of the sky the heavens and so blue represented the heavenly realm and God so it is always listed as first priority.

Blue typifies God’s divinity. It could be said that it’s the color of God.  Blue has a very special meaning to Him representing shamayim – the heavens. It is said God made the sky blue to reflect the glory of His beloved Son!

The middle color purple depicts royalty and is the melding and joining of blue and red the joining of heaven with earth of God to man of spirit with flesh and only in the joining is the purple seen, revealing a total fusing of all that is Him with all that is us. This is the miracle and hard to comprehend – all that is holy, to all that is not and the mystery of the plan of God to become so totally joined that He/Messiah/God will appear to be as sin.

Red/scarlet is a picture of His human side as well as His shed blood.  The color scarlet or red is connected to man through the word in Hebrew – adam=man; which has its roots in the Hebrew word for red. In the middle east the color of the earth is primarily redred earth from which man was created. Also scarlet/red is the symbol of sin and guilt.

It was a prophetic visual of that day to come at Calvary.

These three colors are always recorded in this order:

Blue, purple, scarlet.

The colors are very significant and are the same colors that are used in the garments of the High Priest.

The color Blue represents Heaven for Blue is the color of the sky and a reminder of the heavenly realm.  We are given a description of a glimpse of Heaven when we read of what Moses, Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu (the sons of Moses), and the 70 elders of Israel saw when they went up to worship God on Mount Sinai:

Exodus 24:10  And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.

The significance of the color blue would be associated in the minds of all the people with the commandments of the Lord representing the 613 Laws. It also spiritually signifies the Healing Power of God. It is the color which represents, biblically, the Word of God. Numbers 15:38-41 denotes this biblical meaning of blue (fringe of the borders a ribband of blue).

The very fact that the sky is blue stands for His presence; Sapphires reflect a beautiful sky-blue color reminding us of not only the blue heaven we can see but also the Heaven far beyond, the Heaven of heavens.

Nehemiah 9:6  Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

The Biblical blue was essential in its use in the Temple in Jerusalem and the scripture commands that this color be worn on the tzitzit, the four-cornered garment of the tallit/prayer shawl.

However, for close to 1500 years, the identity of the Biblical blue was lost to the world.

Tekhelet is ancient Hebrew for blueviolet, used in Modern Hebrew as a color equivalent to light blue. Information concerning it, remained in passages in the Talmud which describes the source of the blue dye – a snail known as the (C)hilazon. In ancient times purple and blue dyes derived from snails were so rare and sought after that they were literally worth their weight in gold. These precious dyes colored the robes of the kings and princes of Media, Babylon, Egypt, Greece and Rome. To wear them was to be identified with royalty. Notice the red stripes on the inside of the snails shell. By His (blood red) stripes we are healed.

Numbers 15:38-40

The color red in the Bible represents blood.  The life of man is in the blood (Leviticus 17:11) and Messiah’s blood atonement is necessary for the redemption of man. His pure blood paid the penalty for our sins and by His blood, we are washed clean.

Yeshua/Jesus as our Passover sacrifice

Revelation 1:5  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood.

1 Peter 1:18-19  For as much as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But [redeemed] with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

Col 1:20-21  And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth or things in heaven. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled.

It also represented the red ribbon of Rahab, which pointed to the inclusion of the Gentiles in salvation.

A darker shade of red is scarlet. It’s a color used, along with blue and purple in the Tabernacle, and it represents earthiness. The Hebrew word for scarlet has the same root meaning of the Hebrew word for earth. Adam was created from the dust of the earth– he was earthy, and in the story it’s told that Esau was born red all over like a hairy garment — With red hair all over his body, and so they named him Esau. Genesis 25:25

Esau became a profane man– a man related not to spiritual things, but to earthly things. Also from the root word of scarlet comes the word for worm.

The psalmist referred to himself as a worm (Psa 22:6), Isaiah referred to Jacob in his natural state as a worm (Isa 41:14), and Yeshua/Jesus referred to unregenerate man as a worm (Mark 9:444648) — and that is exactly what man is in his natural state, without God.  Man’s life is in the blood. He is earthy.  But, redeemed by the pure and precious blood of Messiah, our life is in the Spirit.

Purple represents kingship.

In ancient times, purple dye was expensive, therefore making the color purple symbolic of prestige, nobility and kingship/royalty (Judges 8:26Esther 8:15). 

The Bible also reveals purple to be symbolic of wealth, prosperity and luxury (Exodus 28:5Ezekiel 27:7Proverbs 31:22Song of Solomon 3:107:5Luke 16:19Acts 16:14Revelation 17:418:1216).

Purple reminds us of Jesus because He is the King of kings and He lives and rules in the hearts of those who are His.

Romans 15:12  And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.

1 Timothy 1:17  Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Revelation 19:16  And he [Jesus] hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

The color purple, which combines both blue and red, red/scarlet, which points to Yeshua/Jesus’ blood, His life as a man, and His work on earth (scarlet = earthy), and the color blue, which points to His heavenly dwelling place (blue = Heaven).

It directs us to the Royal Priesthood, (Melki-Zedek), which combines both the salvation given to us through the sacrifice of Messiah and our love of the Father shown through our obedience to the Law. As Yeshua/Jesus reminds us Matthew 5:17

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. 18 For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away, not a single jot, not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

However the sacrifices are no longer required because He was the lamb of God that took away the sin of the world. John 1:29

White: Due to its purity of light and color, white represents our clean linen garments of righteousness – the garments of salvation, as we prepare ourselves as His Bride to be clothed in the appropriate wedding garment.

White is the presence of all the light in the visible spectrum. Clouds and snow appear as white because almost all of the sun’s light is reflected by the water in the clouds and snow.  Only a very small amount of the visible spectrum is absorbed.  Fully light and without stain, the color white reminds us of the righteousness of Messiah. 

He is pure light and pure righteousness and when a sinner comes to Him in faith He washes them clean.

Isaiah 1:18  …though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

When Yeshua/Jesus washes us clean from sin, He makes us “white as snow” by giving us His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21); representing the perfection of Messiah.

To these four colors was added gold.

The color gold points to God’s deity.  In ancient days, kings, pharaohs, and noblemen were adorned with gold to signify their high position.

King Solomon had an ivory throne overlaid with the best gold (1 Kings 10:18).

When instructions were given for building the furniture in the Tabernacle, God was very specific about the use of gold.  Every piece of furniture pointed to Christ and to His deity.  For example, in the Holy of Holies, the Ark of the Covenant was constructed of acacia wood (symbolic of Yeshua/Jesus’ humanity) and overlaid with pure gold (symbolic of His divinity). The mercy seat was pure gold as well as the two cherubim, one on each side with wings outstretched (Exodus 25:10-21).  The lampstand was constructed of pure gold, and the table of shewbread and the altar of incense were constructed of acacia wood (Christ’s humanity) and overlaid with gold (Christ’s divinity). Another example of gold representing Jesus’ divinity was at His birth. One of the Wise Men presented Him with a gift of gold, a gift befitting the King of kings that pointed to Yeshua/Jesus being the begotten Son of God.

God’s presence was in the Ark and it was also the receptacle of the Holy Spirit.

As the High Priest symbolizes the living Temple – we are the living Temple/Sanctuary today, the gold represents the indwelling of God’s Holy Spirit/Ruach HaKodesh in us.

Just as the gold was interwoven amongst all the other strands of material, so too His Holy Spirit/ Ruach HaKodesh ties all the members of the Body of Messiah together.

Gold represents God’s love because His love is more precious and more valuable than all the gold in the world and interestingly adding the letter L to GOD spells GOLD. And like gold, He is highly desired (Psalm 42:263:1Philippians 3:10) and His value exceeds everything and everyone.

Even in the color order there is a secret – a hidden message.

Before Messiah was born to live in a human body, He was fully God, or you could say fully blue – coming from the realm of the heavens, hashamayim.
Human beings, are often referred to as being red blooded. Adam, one of the words for man, in Hebrew, and can have the meaning of red-blooded man.

In modern Israel the word for blood is the word, dam,

which is the root word for “A-dam.”

If we follow this through then, Messiah, the fully blue of heaven, was born of Mary, a fully red human descended from Adam, it could be suggested that God, (in Messiah) became something He never was before – a perfect combination of the two realms Blue and RedPurple, or in this case – The Perfect Human. As the scripture 1Cor.15:45 says He was the Last Adam and the 1st Adam we know was also created perfect.

We as believers, start out fully red (of the earthly realm), accept the fully blue (Messiahs heavenly realm), and then we also become purple, royalty like Messiah as children of the King of kings……

His purple people.

The power of the coming Savior and the Atonement was prophesied through the prophet Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

On the cross, Matt 27:46 Mark 15:34 the Savior quoted Psalm 22:1 “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

In this messianic psalm verse 6 states, “I am a worm, and no man” The Hebrew word used here for “worm” (tola’at) refers specifically to the crimson worm.

The Hebrew words for scarlet (shani) and crimson (tola) signify where the colors were derived from—a worm (most likely Kermes echinatus).

The scarlet or crimson worm is of a family of insects that live on oak trees.

the words scarlet and crimson refer to red colors that come from certain dyes.

Ancient cultures placed great importance on dyes, especially those used for sacred or ceremonial purposes, such as burial clothing or purification rituals (see Leviticus 14:6). The point of a dye is that it is not only colorful but also colorfast, meaning that its rich color will stick to the cloth and not fade or wash away.

Permanent. The colorfast nature of scarlet and crimson dyes is similar to our sins, and “the Lord cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance” (Alma 45:16). “According to the great plan of the Eternal God there must be an atonement made, or else all mankind must unavoidably perish” (Alma 34:9).

Only the Blood of Messiah can remove a permanent colorfast stain of sin.

Crimson is a strong, red color, inclining to purple.

It originally referred to the color of the kermes dye produced from an insect, Kermes vermilio, (from where we get our word vermillion); but the name is now sometimes also used as a generic term for slightly bluish-red colors that are between red and rose.

There is a correlation with the Tabernacles’ 4 main colors and the 4 Gospels and also the 4 faced man, the 4 faces of the cherubim.

In Matthew’s gospel Yeshua/Jesus is portrayed most often as King of Kings. Messiah Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The lineage recorded in Matthew proves his rightful, kingly claim to the throne of His father, King David. The Lion corresponds to Him because it’s known as the King of the animal kingdom. As the color most often associated with royalty is purple, so it is the color of Matthew.

Red is the color for Marks gospel. Here, Messiah is most often referred to as the suffering servant.  The ox was used as a servant – a beast of burden, as well as a sacrificial animal.  Yeshua/Jesus went about doing good, healing, restoring.   Mark’s gospel records that He came not to be served, but to serve.  In Marks account,there is no genealogy here probably because the lineage or pedigree of a servant is not necessary.

In Luke, Yeshua/Jesus is portrayed in everyday and familiar domestic settings, we read of Him being among Mary, Martha and Lazarus and other ones that He loved so much. Its in Luke that the Prodigal son is recorded.  White is also associated with this gospel. In Luke’s record, Messiah is most often referred to as the son of Man, one of the 4 faces portrayed on the temple veil.

The reason for the portrayal as a man may be because its easy to get caught up in His Divinity, Holiness, majesty and might, that we sometimes forget that He is also fully human, with human emotions and human sympathies.

Hebrews 4:15 New International Version (NIV). 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are —yet he did not sin.

He doesn’t merely know how we feel the scripture seems to tell us that He feels what we feel. His lineage recorded here goes all the way back to Adam proving that He is 100% a human man.

Yeshua/Jesus is portrayed most often as the, Very God, from heaven so Blue
is connected with the Gospel of John, for here His Godhood is revealed. The Eagle, which soars high above in the heavens, represents this Gospel and there is no genealogy in John’s account because, as divinity, an eternal being, He has no beginning and no end.

 

The high priest’s garments and the Ephod itself also had a fifth element woven throughout, 5 is the numerical value of grace. 

This 5th element was Pure gold thread.  

Gold depicts God’s divinity and gave durability to the cloth as well as a glistening sheen. Artisans of ancient Israel took the purest fine gold and first hammered or beat it into very thin sheets until it was paper thin.  Next, they cut it into tiny strips, rolled and stretched it until it was very fine thread.  This was woven in amongst the blue, purple, scarlet and white linen and fashioned into the Ephod and the breastplate on which were mounted the 12 precious stones, representing the 12 tribes of Israel.

This hammering, beating, cutting, rolling and stretching is a graphic representation of the beating Messiah received as He took our place.  The scriptures record in Isaiah that He was brutalized so badly by the sadistic Roman soldiers, that He was not even recognizable as human.

All the remaining copious amounts of gold throughout the tabernacle was Beaten and hammered into shape, it was all fashioned in the same way.

The Gospels represent a beautifully woven tapestry of the Blue, Purple, Scarlet, White and Gold.

As the Blue as He healed all who were sick and oppressed of the devil.  Performing miracles, overcoming impossible obstacles and raising the dead.

As the Purple He was The King Who sat down on the mount to teach the people, not as the Scribes and Pharisees but as One having authority and the King Who rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.

As the Scarlet/Red as our divine servant went about doing good, the One Who suffered all for our sakes.

As the white He was the Man, sound asleep in the boat who awoke to the cries of those He loved in need of His help. Recognize the Blue in the power and majesty as He commands the wind and waves to be still with a word: SHALOM!

The Gold is represented as the One tested by the devil and proved Him to be the very God in human form.

As the fulfillment drew close as Yeshua prepared Himself to be the instrument of the actual joining, they mocked and beat Him and pressed a thorny crown into His head. And put a robe around Him the scriptures tell us it was a scarlet/purple color.

Behold the man!

So Yeshua/Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Look! Here is the man!” Holman Christian Standard Bible.

They stripped Him and dressed Him in a scarlet military robe.

Matthew 27:28

The Soldiers Mock Jesus 27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company around Him. 28 They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 And they twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head.

and having unclothed him, they put around him a crimson cloak,

Stripping off His garments, they put on Him a general’s short crimson cloak.

Scarlet Robe

Matt. 27:28, “They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.”

Matt. 27:31, “After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.”

Purple Robe

Mark 15:17, “They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him.”

Mark 15:20, “After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.”

John 19:2, “And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him.”

John 19:5, “Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!”

The colors are both different and similar depending on the shade and the lighting.  For example, dark scarlet is very similar to darker purple.  In the condition of poor lighting, the distinction is even less apparent since the colors would appear darker.

So, it could simply be that the robe was a dark color that could have been accurately described by either word.

Purple was associated with triumph and emperors so along with the crown of thorns it was a mocking symbol of Yeshua/Jesus royalty.

Marcus Aurelius would have worn similar to this.

The very fact that purple was an expensive color made it affordable only to the royals. That Jesus was made to put it on before his crucifixion, implies that the Romans were sending a strong signal to the Jews against any coup.

It is full of significance. The symbolism of not just the purple, but all four colors of the robe viewed in the Gospel accounts from points of view.

Heb. 10:19-20 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

This then relates to the pattern of the tabernacle of Moses wherein the veil was made of four colors.

Ex. 26:31 And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made:

Blue [tekeleth], purple [argaman]scarletlinen.

So we see Messiah clothed in the same, although the two purples refer to the blue and the purple; the word, gorgeous, may be translated white, like white linen.

John 19:2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple [porphyrus] robe,

Mt. 27:28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet [kokkinos] robe.

Mk. 15:17 And they clothed him with purple [porphyra- purple fish],

Lk. 23:11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous [lampros- white] robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

So, the color purple may have also related to royalty, but the primary point was to show Christ came in the flesh.

There are of course the usual Skeptics who maintain that a contradiction exists between the Gospel accounts because they describe the color of the robe differently. Matthew says that the soldiers “put a scarlet robe” on Jesus (27:27-28), Mark says that “they clothed Him with purple ” (15:16-17), and John states that the soldiers put “a purple robe” on Him (19:1-2). These differences have lead some to believe and advocate that the writers wrote under their own power with no help from a Higher Being, and thus they contradicted one another in their narratives. There is however, a valid explanation for the differences in the Gospel narratives concerning the robe placed upon Messiah after His scourging.

It is not uncommon that we all see colors a little differently. There are people who are color blind and do not see the true color at all. What one person calls blue, someone else may be more specific and call navy blue. A military uniform color may appear to some as dark red, but others who sees the faded uniforms for the first time at the end of a conflict may conclude that the color is more maroon. Another e.g. one child may color an orange-yellow Sun, while another makes a Sun that is bright yellow.

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John simply wrote from different perspectives. The same way that people look at colors and see different tones, shades, and tints, they experienced the activities surrounding the life of Yeshua/Jesus from different perspectives and described what they saw individually.

It is very likely that the garment placed upon Yeshua/Jesus after his brutal scourging was similar to the description of the previously mentioned faded uniforms, but in His case we read of “a scarlet robe…faded to resemble purple” (The Wycliffe Bible Commentary). [It is difficult to imagine Pilate arraying Jesus’ bloody body with a new robe. More likely it was one that had been worn and cast off as useless (Barnes).] According to A.T. Robertson, there were various shades of purple and scarlet in the first century and it was not easy to distinguish the colors or tints (1997). In fact, the ancients (especially the Romans) used the term purple when speaking of various shades of red (McGarvey, 1875, p. 361; Barnes, 1997). Consequently, these different colors sometimes would be called by the same name.

So really there is no discrepancy in the scriptures concerning the color of the robe placed around Messiah. It seems that they were simply like others of their day and used the terms scarlet and purple interchangeably.

Purple – Crimson – Scarlet.

Colors in the Bible have a symbolic significance that can remind us of God and His plan of redemption.

As with numbers, colors point us to Yeshua/Jesus by symbolizing His Person and His works. Hebrew hermeneutics PARDES, has an interpretation approach that includes something called a “remez.”  A remez is a hint of a hidden message or a deeper meaning that is below the surface or behind the words.  Numbers and colors are both remezes.

Yeshua/Jesus wore a blue  poncho/chiton?

Luke 23:11 Herod put a white esthes on Him

John19:2 Pilate put a purple himation on Him.

Mt 27:28 Soldiers put a Scarlet clamus on Him

Mt 27:31 Soldiers put his Blue garment (chiton) back on Him. 

Luke 23:11  But the Herod together-with his armies having-treated him with-contempt, and having-mocked (him), having-cast-around him (a) brilliant white esthes (ἐσθῆτα) (robe) he-sent him back to-the Pilate.

John 19:2 And the soldiers having-plaited (a) crown out-of thorn-plants they-put (it) upon his head, and they-cast-around him (a) purple himation (ἱμάτιον himation),

Matthew 27:28  And having-stripped him they-placed-around to-him (a) scarlet mantle (χλαμύδα chlamuda);

Matthew 27:31   And then they-mocked him they-stripped (off) him the mantle ( χλαμύς chlamus), and they-clothed him in his garments (ἱμάτια himatia); and they-led him away into to-be-crucified.

 

Matthew 27:35  But having-crucified him they-divided-for themselves his garments (ἱμάτια – himatia) casting (a) lot, in-order-that it-might-be-fulfilled, the-(thing) having-been-said by the prophet; They-divided-for-themselves my garments  (ἱμάτια – himatia) with-themselves, and on my vesture (ἱματισμόν – himatismon) they-cast (a) lot.

Psalm 22:18 They part my garments (‫בְגָדַי beged) (LXX: ἱμάτιά himatia) among them, And upon my vesture (‫לְבוּשִׁ  lĕbuwsh) (LXX: ἱματισμόν himatismon) do they cast lots.

 

 

Finding Colors that Point to Messiah in the Symbolism:

There are many examples in the Bible of colors that point to Yeshua/Jesus.  One of the greatest examples is the door of the Tabernacle.

Exodus 27:16  And for the gate of the court shall be an hanging of twenty cubits, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, wrought with needlework: and their pillars shall be four, and their sockets four.

Blue points to Heaven, where God dwells.

Purple points to One who would come as Messiah, the King of the Jews

Scarlet (red) points to His blood atonement, paid for the sins of man.

White (fine linen) points to the Righteous One and the righteousness He imputes to all who come to Him in faith.

This was the gate, the entrance to the Tabernacle, a type of door in the fence that surrounded the Tabernacle.  There was only one door through which to enter into the court of the Tabernacle.  Beyond the court, in the Holy Place, was gold furniture and beyond that was the Holy of Holies with the golden Ark and the presence of God.  We know that Jesus is our Door, and only through Him can man come before God.

I am the DOOR: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. (John 10:9)

Therefore, we see that by passing through the four-colored veil/curtain, (DOOR) we look forward to our perfect High Priest, Yeshua/Jesus the Messiah.

 

An incredible fulfillment as the Messiah Yeshua was the vessel

in whom heaven and earth

God and man,

spirit and flesh,

infinite and finite –

blue and red became one – completely.

It is finished He said, knowing all that had been accomplished in every prophetic detail. Planned from the beginning including the detailed instructions of the Tabernacles construction;

so that as all that is red and ungodly in us –

is joined to all that is blue and godly in Him –

we become the purple people of His passion –

and He is our High Priest after the order of Malki Zedek.
