Are We Kings & Priests?

The scriptures say we are

kings and priests

but what does that really mean?

In Revelation 1:6

ESV: and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

NIV: and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.

NASB: and He made us into a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

If we look at the role of a king and a priest, it may help us to know if that applies to us or not. Furthermore taken in context and remembering both the old and renewed covenants were made with Abraham, the first Hebrew, and the children of Israel/Jacob. In the renewed testament/covenant, it was first given

from the Jewish Messiah Yeshua

to

all the Israelites

and then to the gentiles/goy.

Romans 1:16 …first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

The Jews have a priority over the Gentiles in that the Messiah himself, Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ, came first as a Jew to the Jews.

Romans 9:5.

Our understanding must be based on the times and culture when it was happening and written, and to whom it was given.

Exodus 19:6a

“And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.”

The role of kings in the earth is that of sovereign rule over a people or nation, where the people are the subjects and have to live and abide by the rules and regulations set by the king. There are nations/countries today that still retain a monarchy whose ruling king and or queen maintains all or a measure of control over the population. There are those whose overall rule even tells the people who and what to worship and give allegiance to. Some nations have separation between church/religion and state.

To get our understanding correct, we need to look at the scriptures and see that it was YHVH’s people that wanted a king over them so they could be like the other nations.

“We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.” 1Samuel.

Our Heavenly Father wanted to be their god, their king, their provider and protector; and to reign over them in righteousness and truth. He wanted relationship, their love, worship, their obedience and faithfulness to the covenant that He had made with them. He wanted to dwell among them, which is the reason for the building of the mishkan and the forming of the priesthood; because of mans sinfulness there had to be a way where they could approach a Holy God. The life blood of an innocent, sinless animal was the sacrifice put in place until Messiah fulfilled it by His sacrificial death.

The role of the priests was first given to the firstborn of each of the 12 tribes of Israel, the 12 sons of Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel. We need to remember that the 12 tribes of Israel is not the same as the country named Israel. Not everyone can trace their lineage back to those 12 sons who are the children of Jacob/Israel. Even Messiah Yeshua/Jesus challenged the leaders of His time calling them snakes and vipers and that they were not the true sons of YHVH. They may have had Abraham as their ancestral ‘father’ but were not directly descended from his son Isaac and grandson Jacob/Israel. Recall Abraham had another son, Ishmael, who also had 12 sons. Herod who was the King in Messiahs day, was an Edomite whose lineage was from Esau, Jacob’s brother, who sold his birthright to Jacob. Jacob/Israel became the chosen line through whom Messiah came.

The 12 tribes of the Israelites, apart from the tribe of Levi, were all involved with the sin of the golden calf right after the Sinai covenant had been made. Initially the firstborn sons of each tribe were to be priests before the Lord but after this event the privilege of the firstborn sons was taken away and given only to the tribe of Levi.

Num. 3:11-13

Levi had 3 sons Gershon, Kohath and Merari who became the heads of the clans of the Levites.

However we read in Num. 17:1-10, that YHVH chose Levis great, grandson Aaron and his descendants

to be His Priests from among all the Levites.

Num. 1:47-54.

There are 4 divisions of Levites:

The Gershonites descendants of Levis firstborn. who were responsible for caring for the Mishkans woven articles, the coverings of the walls and roof of the Tabernacle. They dwelt on the west side of the Mishkan.

The Kohanites descendants of Levis middle son Kohath. They carried the the sacred objects of the Mishkan. They dwelt on the south side of the Mishkan.

The Meranites descendants of Levis youngest son Merari. They carried the wooden parts of the Mishkan as well as the ropes and sockets used for the curtain of the courtyard. They dwelt on the north side of the Mishkan.

The Kohanim descendants of Levis great grand son Aaron. This clan were responsible for performing all of the korbanot/sacrifices and other ritual on behalf of all Israel. Only the kohanim were allowed to perform avodah/priestly service on behalf of Israel. They dwelt on the east side of the Mishkan.

The other Levites were employed in more menial tasks, such as the housekeeping of the tabernacle, keeping oil in the lamps, transporting the Ark of the Covenant, taking down and setting up the tabernacle when moving, and related tasks in assisting the priests

The priests could offer sacrifices for the people, burn incense on the altar, and teach the law.

The Aaronic (or Levitical) Priesthood thus functioned only within the tribe of Levi, and the right to have it conferred upon one was determined by lineage and worthiness.

The lineal restrictions of that Aaronic (Levitical) Priesthood were lifted when the law of Moses was fulfilled, and thereafter the offices of the priesthood were conferred upon worthy men without limitation to the tribe of Levi. Numbers 8. (10)

This was the way it was all the years that they travelled through the wilderness and afterwards in the promised land. The priesthood continued after the Temple was built in Jerusalem up until it was destroyed in 70AD. We understand that as Messiah was the perfect sacrifice no more sacrifices are needed.

Under the Old Covenant, repeated sacrifices were necessary because they could not fully remove sin, they could only cover them for a period of time. Hebrews 10:18; Hebrews 10:1-4. However, through Messiah/Christ’s sacrifice, sins are forgiven once and for all. 

In all of the Israelites, Levis sons were not to be enlisted in the army to risk their lives on behalf of the people. By putting themselves in harms way for the preservation all of the innocent. Instead they were called for a service even more important, more holy and sacred than that of their brothers. The Levites were appointed over the Mishkan to carry it and all its vessels and to serve it every time they moved camp. They were set apart for the most important work of all which was manual labor!

As disciples of Messiah we all desire to be closer to our Heavenly Father. What we often don’t realize however it is that the closer we get, the more of the lowly, manual, time consuming work we’re likely to be given. Being close to Him doesn’t necessarily mean that we are offered more visible or celebrated tasks, but on the contrary it means that He can trust us to work in anonymity, joyfully putting our backs into even the most menial of tasks.

The reality of their calling was the equivalent of furniture moving, to serve Him with sweat of their brows and the strength of their hands and backs. They were responsible for carrying all the pieces of the Mishkan from one camping place to the next. Num. 3:5-7. Despite this high calling and position, the Levites soon learned that a life of service to the Lord was a far from glamorous one. Their special place of honor among the sons of Israel may have earned them respect but not so much glory. Instead of an high standing among their brothers, the Levites were set apart as servants…. Their charge was to assist the High Priest and to labor on behalf of the whole Israel community.

Fast forward this to today, if we are believing that we are the kingdom of priests, we too are set apart as servants just as Messiah came as a servant of all.

In Revelation, John contemplates what YHVH has done for believers by making us a kingdom of priests. 

Once we were helpless sinners, but now, as John explains in this verse, we are a royal priesthood 1 Peter 2:9. Once we served sin; now we worship and serve YHVH, as a kingdom of priests. In Old Testament times, priests offered sacrifices on behalf of the people of Israel and stood as mediators between them and the Lord. Now we can come directly to our Heavenly Father through Yeshua/Jesus, and we offer ourselves and spiritual sacrifices to Him.

Romans 12:1; 1 Peter 2:5.

Under the New Covenant, Yeshua/Jesus  is the

“high priest”

(the one who makes atonement for our sins) of

“our confession” (the Son of God) is Yeshua/Jesus.

Hebrews 3:1

 He’s was sent to put into effect, to execute, to carry out the words that we say according to the scriptures. 

Hebrews 3:1 Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession: Jesus;

He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.…

You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God..
This phrase reflects the fulfillment of God’s promise to Israel and the Church, echoing Exodus 19:6, where God declares Israel to be a “kingdom of priests.”

Exodus 19:6
And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you are to speak to the Israelites.”

It signifies a spiritual transformation and elevation of believers, who are now part of God’s royal priesthood, 1 Peter 2:9.

The concept of a kingdom implies

governance and authority,

while priests indicate

a role of mediation and service.

This dual role highlights the believers’ responsibility to:

represent our Heavenly Father and Yeshua to the world

and: to intercede on behalf of others.

The imagery of a kingdom and priests also connects to the Davidic covenant, where the Messiah would establish an everlasting kingdom. 2 Samuel 7:16.

Those who have been made a kingdom of priests, refers to believers who have been redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb and are called to serve the Lord.

Believers are called to:

recognize their identity as a kingdom and priests

which is:

not based on personal merit but on the redemptive work of Messiah/Christ.

As priests, believers are called to serve YHVH, to intercede for others, and live lives of holiness and worship.

The promise of reigning on earth, points to the hope of Messiah/Christ’s return and the establishment of His kingdom. Believers are encouraged to live with this future hope in mind.

The collective identity as a kingdom of priests emphasizes the unity and shared purpose of the church. Believers are called to work together in fulfilling His mission.

While the fullness of this reign is in the future, believers are called to live out the values of His kingdom now, demonstrating His love, justice, and righteousness in the world.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

2 Timothy 2:12
if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He will also deny us;

Isaiah 61:6
But you will be called the priests of the LORD; they will speak of you as ministers of our God; you will feed on the wealth of nations, and you will boast in their riches.

In Messiah/Christ, our High Priest, we have a closeness to the Father, and no earthly mediator is necessary. As priests in His kingdom, we recognize that salvation is not merely an insurance it’s a way of life…

Prophet, Priest and King were the only ones anointed before Messiah came. Now His Holy Spirit is available to all. His presence was only in the Mishkan and inner Sanctuary within the holy of holies in the Temple. When there is a Temple, it is their privilege and obligation to serve.

Messiah came and now we are the sanctuary, the holy of holies in His temple-our bodies, where His Holy Spirit is present.

Or do you not know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 1Cor. 6:19. you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.

Sometimes we like to think that our Father has something more for us, something grander, or of more of a public display than what we are doing with our lives right now. But if our hearts truly desire to serve Him, we need to serve Him well today, where we are right now; and not neglect our duties where He has called us at present. As His servants, our lives are His to do with as He wills. Our only job is to dedicate ourselves to the service of our calling, not seeking glory or fame but Him only.

Even though the Levites daily bore the weight of their selection, their service was not without reward. For a life of selflessness and sacrifice, a life of lifting and carrying the burdens of others, there is this prize ….they are MINE… Numbers 3 :11–13. By redeeming the lives of the firstborn of Israel, the Levites themselves became the first born of Adonai, owned by no one and nothing, they belong solely to Adonai.

The anointing and privileges of a Priest and a King are now available to every born-again-from-above believer/disciple. We can come into the Lords presence any time, no mishkan or temple required. No sacrifice needed and no high priest to speak for us. We are not literally priests and kings but rather have the same privileges they once had and more because of Messiah.

He gave a Holy Nation access to Himself. He did not give them all the same function, but He did give them all the same rights to

pray, petition and worship.

He made a Nation with

priestly access

and

kingly access to Himself.

Neither are we actual literal Kings because the Kingship was given by Covenant only to David and his descendants through Solomon and Messiah is the King of those kings. All gentiles/goy are grafted into His people Israel by the grace and mercy of our Heavenly Father through Messiah.

In the days the scriptures were written, the common people had

no personal relationship

with the king or the priests!

According to Job 22:28

Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

Kings decree and as discipled believers we can decree, or have the king like privilege to declare His words, (not ours) into being. His will, not ours. This is the sword of His Spirit, His word in our mouth, to speak into situations the double edged sword/word to both defend against and destroy the works of darkness and the author of them. Ephesians 6.

As disciples of Messiah we have been charged with carrying the burden for all mankind. The question is, are we willing to relinquish ownership of ourselves that we maybe used to give life to the world? Out of all the people on earth Adonai has taken us for Himself, but not for our sake alone. By submitting our lives completely to His will, the loss of self will be gain for others and we will fulfill the…

sacrifice of service to which we have been called. So now maybe we better understand our positions and roles as, kings, priests and a kingdom of priests.

Matthew 26:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 

Whoever counts his life of so much value that he will preserve it by sacrificing his godly integrity, or will renounce his beliefs to save his life, will find in the end that he has lost his soul.

For whoever wishes to save his life [in this world] will [eventually] lose it [through death], but whoever loses his life [in this world] for My sake will find it [that is, life with Me for all eternity].

Is the price of our lives too to high to pay for the Master to call us His?

He glorifies Himself through our humility. As we give up our lives daily to Him, taking up our cross to follow Him, are we willing to have our hands calloused and our back broken for the sake of the service for which He has set us apart?

Today is the day to be serious about our commitment to the One Who gave it all for us.

Are You A Jeshurun – Ysehurun?

In reading the scriptures there are many names we may not be familiar with, one of those is

Jesurun or Ysehurun/ ישׁהרנ.

Who exactly is Jeshurun ישׁרונ ?

The name is only referenced four times in the TaNaKH/Old Testament and most scholars agree that it’s a term of endearment that our Heavenly Father uses for Yisrael/Israel.

Deuteronomy 32:15; 33:5; 33:26 and Isaiah 44:2.

Deuteronomy 32:15: “But Jeshurun waxed fat and kicked. Thou are waxen fat and thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness, then he forsook God which made him and lightly esteemed the rock of his salvation.”

Isaiah 44:1 But now listen, O Jacob My servant, Israel, whom I have chosen. 2 This is what the LORD who made you And formed you from the womb, who will help you says, ‘Fear not, O Jacob My servant; And Jeshurun (Israel, the upright one) whom I have chosen.

In Deuteronomy 33:5, it is used to describe the ideal kingship of God over Israel: “So the LORD became King in Jeshurun when the leaders of the people gathered, together with the tribes of Israel.”

There is no direct Greek equivalent for Jeshurun in the Strong’s Concordance, as it is a specific Hebrew proper noun used uniquely in the context of the Old Testament. However, the concept of Israel as YHVH’s chosen and beloved people is echoed in various Greek terms related to the ecclesia and the people of YHVH in the Brit Chadashah/New Testament.

The term Jeshurun appears in the Hebrew Bible as a symbolic name for Israel, emphasizing the nation’s ideal character as upright and righteous before YHVH and it is used in a few key passages to highlight Israel’s special relationship with Him. Jeshurun is a poetic and affectionate name for the nation of Israel/Yisrael.

The name Jeshurun underscores the ideal of Israel as a people chosen by YHVH to live in righteousness and faithfulness; it has the idea of one mindedness with Him. It serves as a reminder of the nation’s calling to embody uprightness and to maintain a covenant relationship with YHVH and is used when He wants to express His affection for Israel/Yisrael.

As we often find when we study the scriptures, there are many interpretations as to what or who the writer is referring to in the word Jeshurun. Some commentators say it is simply a poetic reference to Israel, however the Rabbis teach that the word Jeshurun is a reference to the noblest and best among us; because the word itself comes from the root word yashar which means to be upright or righteous. I Peter 2:5 talks of the priesthood of all believers and we should read it with the understanding that this isn’t just a reference to those in leadership positions, it is a reference to all of us; true believers as His disciples fit the description or definition of a Jeshurun.

The word is spelled with the letters: Yod, Shin and Resh which suggest being filled with the fire of the Fathers Ruach HaKodesh/Holy Spirit, and representing an individual whom the Father has chosen, with special favor to do something in particular for Him. It could be that many readers have had that feeling; that our Heavenly Father has given special favor on their lives and placed on them a call from His Holy Spirit to carry out some specific work? In that case, He has called you Jeshurun.

Jeshurun is also used in a context of rebuke, where Israel/Yisrael, having grown prosperous, is warned against forsaking YHVH: “But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; you grew fat, thick, and sleek—he abandoned the God who made him and scorned the Rock of his salvation.”

Deuteronomy 32:15 starts off with the name Jeshurun and says that this beloved of God had: waxed fat and kicked.

What is our Heavenly Father talking about…

Israel, Jeshurun became fat and disrespectful both physically and spiritually. He is saying to them: You have become fat, overfed, stuffed, gorged! They abandoned the One who made them and prospered them and treated the rock of their salvation shamefully. 16 They made him furious because they worshiped foreign gods and angered him because they worshiped worthless idols. 17 They sacrificed to demons that are not God, to gods they never heard of.

Do we treat our Heavenly Father as some instant wish answering genie, demanding all our dreams to come true?

He is our Heavenly Father, One with Whom we have a love relationship and not a ‘give me what I want now’ relationship.

We all know how parents will pay special attention to a newborn baby giving it everything it wants, however as the child grows older, much of that attention ceases as they must learn to find their own way. This is often the case with new believers and as we grow older in our relationship, the attention which we first received may not seem to be the same. Our Father wants us to look beyond ourselves and see the needs out there in a world that is lost and in darkness.  Sadly we become so used to constant attention, that, like those who grew fat and start kicking, when we are not getting an immediate answer to our prayers. Many times we become too attached to the blessings of our Heavenly Father rather than to Him.

Anyone who has any farming experience will know that a well-fed animal, whether a cow/horse/pig/chicken etc., will grow insolent, rebellious and demanding and could well end up kicking or biting their owner if they’re not careful. The animal becomes spoiled and demanding, which is a meaning behind this verse. We too can grow fat and lazy with our Father’s blessings and then when He removes one, we begin to cry, complain and kick. This results in self serving behavior, which is contrary to everything our Savior taught and the results are like that of the well fed livestock. Sadly these traits are some of the dangers of spiritual apathy, our Heavenly Father is simply pointing to our selfishness and we too could end up like Jeshurun, self-absorbed and proud.

In truth each one of us is given special favor from the Father and He has endowed all of us with something special, so we have no need to boast or feel smug. We all serve a unique role in the body of Messiah and no one is more important or special than anyone else.

In taking a closer look at the Hebrew letters in the word for Jeshurun, there is what is called ‘the shadow of the letters’, like an opposite view point or a negative meaning of the Yod, Shin and Resh. This could indicate that we can become unstable and not securely grounded in Him when we allow worldly carnal passions to take us over and influence our decisions and lifestyle. There’s a danger to receiving the Fathers natural blessings in that, we become too attached to them. Would we be able to say what Job did? “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord.”  Job 1:21.

We become too attached to the physical blessings that reflect the prosperity of the world and being successful, e.g. high wages, a house, a car etc., rather than to our Heavenly Father Himself. Perhaps that beautiful house, car etc., was given to us for a special purpose beyond ourselves.

Even though we allow ourselves to become fat, and then kick and scream when we are forced out of our comfort zone, our Heavenly Father still calls us Jeshurun. Despite all our self-centered, selfish demands, we are still His children and He loves us.

In Isaiah 44:2, Jeshurun is used in a comforting promise of YHVH’s care: “This is the word of the LORD your Maker, who formed you from the womb and will help you: Do not be afraid, O Jacob My servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.”

He is patient with us and eventually we stop kicking and screaming and begin to appreciate the One that we have forsaken; and to once again deeply respect Him by repenting of our rebelliousness and appreciating all that He has done for us as the Rock of our salvation.

It’s time to be about our Father’s business and not building our own little kingdoms and then having a breakdown when something interrupts our comfortable lifestyle.

As a last thought, Deuteronomy 33:26 praises YHVH’s unique relationship with Yisrael/Israel:

There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun who rides the heavens to your aid, and the clouds in His majesty.

As His Jeshurun we are looking to the heavens for that same

rider of the clouds, our help, our refuge and strength.

Let’s not be those Jeshurun who have grown fat and kicked against the Father like a spoiled child, but be the Jeshurun who are straight, right, upright, and pleasing to our Messiah as we continue looking unto Him the author and finisher of our faith because every day our full redemption draws closer.

Who’s The 3rd Warrior ?

Was it Samson,

Joshua, Caleb,

Gideon, Deborah,

Jael, Ahab,

Barak, David?

Or was it one of David’s Mighty Men;

the Gibborim; הַגִּבֹּרִ֛ים ‎ hagGībōrīm,

“The Mighty Ones”

who were a group of 37 men who fought with King David?

To answer this question we must journey back to a confrontation recorded in:

1 Samuel 4:6
On hearing the noise of the shout, the Philistines asked, “What is this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews?” And when they realized that the ark of the LORD had entered the camp,

I Samuel 4:7: And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp and they said Woe unto us

And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe to us! for there has not been such a thing heretofore.

What the Philistines knew but the Hebrew Israelites didn’t realize was that the Hebrews had with them

A Third or Ultimate Warrior

joined the ranks of the Israelites and the Philistines recognized when He did and they cried out in terror!

The Philistines were in fact saying that:

They were standing before the Third/Ultimate Warrior.   

The use of the feminine pronoun, SHE, gives a picture of a mother fighting to protect her young.

This is a picture of an

ultimate warrior,

one who will fight to the death for someone or something,

and was the same in ancient times as it is today.

This is how the Philistines saw the Hebrew God; as a mother protectively wrapping her young in her arms and glaring at them and threatening that, if you touched her little ones you will have to deal with her, and the Philistines did not want to deal with “Her.”

This account is more than just the Philistines fear of the Israelites Hebrew God; it is about taking the physical ark they could see and touch in the natural to give them victory and not trusting in God and His spiritual power to intervene.

They were relying on

the power of an object,

instead of Who and Whom it represented.

Here it is interesting to note that it was the Philistines who recognized the difference; they said

GOD has come into the camp

not

the ark has come into our camp!!

The fact that the Philistines declared that God had come into the camp is profound because in verse 3, the children of Israel declared that “it”, referring to the ark, would save them.

And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, {c} Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

(c) Before we fought against men, and now God has come to fight against us.

Israel was defeated before the Philistines.

Why?

 

Because sin, was in the camp, and it gave their enemies all the advantage they could desire.

The hand of God was there for them but, instead of submitting, they spoke in anger, as if they were not aware of any action they had done to provoke Him.

The foolishness of man perverts his way, and then his heart frets against the Lord, Proverbs 19:3, and finds fault with him.

They supposed that they could compel God to appear and help them, by bringing the ark into the camp.

Those who have gone back into a life of religious doctrine and men’s traditions, sometimes end up loving and preferring all the outward observances, thinking these things will save them.

The Israelites thought that by bringing the Ark, God’s throne, into the camp, it would bring heavens help to them.

Whatever we place our trust in, whether it’s our Heavenly Father or the world and the flesh, this is what is really on the throne of the heart. This is what we have faith in.

The people of Israel said

the ark would save them

and the enemy, the Philistines, their godless, pagan enemies, said

“God” would save Israel!

There are occasions when the people of the world have greater clarity and can see things that we just don’t see.

The Parable of the Unjust Steward in

Luke 16:1–13 is referring to this.

Israel represented a strong and notable faith, one that was feared and respected by the Philistines, yet as events unfolded, it was shown that they may have represented a true faith, but in action, they had no faith at all.

They did not walk the walk, or talk the talk, and were defeated. Their failing was a lack of trust in the Lord which was caused by a lack of knowledge of Who He is, usually as a result of having no intimate relationship with the One they said they represented.

That last phrase: “Woe to us for there has not been such a thing heretofore” is a very strange statement.  Most translations will render this phrase in a similar fashion, however, in Hebrew, it says literally:

“Woe to us for she has not come as this yesterday three days.”  and it doesn’t seem to make sense.

Possibly what we are reading is a combination of the thoughts and feelings of all the Philistines? There is no single translation to this phrase.

The word yesterday is really an adverb which means before or heretofore. 

The word thing is also very interesting.

As already noted, it’s the word 

shaleshim 

used in extra-Biblical literature for the

third warrior or the ultimate warrior. 

The Philistines are saying that

they stand before the ultimate warrior.  

The next time we are challenged or confronted by a spiritual Philistine, as they stand there laughing at us, they will see something behind us that we may not really be paying attention to, and they will run in terror because our Heavenly Father is right behind us; just like the mother bear, ready to rip that Philistine to shreds if they try to touch a hair on our heads.

Each translation renders this phrase a little differently but with much the same meaning, this is because its a difficult passage to translate and there aren’t appropriate words in the English language suitable to insert in here.

However it could read:

nothing like this has happened before.

But something like that had happened before… because in the Hebrew it literally says:

“Woe to us for she has not come as this yesterday three days.”

Yesterday is an adverb and is correctly translated as

Heretofore …this three days.

Ancient Jewish literature provides insight into this phrase, as this is an ancient Semitic expression/ an idiom.

This Semitic idiom has its roots in the picture of picking up a chick/baby bird /equivalent to the first warrior; and then facing the wrath of the male/father bird /equivalent to the second warrior. 

It is easy to deal with a baby bird, and the male father bird may show some increased resistance, but is not overwhelming.  It is the reaction of the female mother bird that will be the problem, because she will fight to the death to protect her little chick/equivalent to the third warrior.

As already noted as an interesting point, that the Philistines used she, a feminine pronoun, to represent God and maybe the use of the feminine pronoun would be appropriate because this idiomatic expression pictures this ultimate warrior as a mother fighting to protect her young. 

 

As ancient Semitic languages had only two genders, male and female and there was no neuter gender this was not unusual in those times.

However scholars note that in ancient pagan religions, many of these pagan gods and goddesses demanded an end to gender identity and the Priests of goddess religions had to be castrated and therefore rendered gender-neutral and homosexuality was also encouraged.  It is clear that the enemy, unclean and fallen spirits were at the root of these pagan religions and were trying to destroy humanity; and there are certainly similarities to the gender-neutral movement we have today, to that of ancient paganism. Solomon said there is nothing new under the sun!

The word  thing in this verse, which in Hebrew is the word 

shaleshim and really means three days, 

also carries the idea of a

third element.

Thing, third day, third warrior, ultimate warrior.

The Philistines are saying is that this is the first time

the third warrior or the ultimate warrior

has appeared or joined the Hebrew armies.

We could look at it in this way:

When Israel faced their enemy the first time, they were nothing more than a mere baby chick /first warrior, and were easily defeated by their attackers.

God later raised up judges who would lead a powerful army /second warrior.

The point to remember is what the Israelites didn’t fully comprehend but what the enemy knew, was that the Hebrews had a Shaleshim,

a Third or Ultimate Warrior

join their army and the Philistines recognized when He did; and this is why they cried out in terror because they knew that the equivalent of a ferocious mother bear had shown up to protect her cubs!

Everyone of us face difficult situations alone, and in the times when we face the enemy and are defeated/first warrior, we run to the local assembly and join forces with other believers/ second warriors, but sometimes the enemy will still attack and defeat us.  However, when the appearance of that third warrior, Shaleshim, Who is Jesus/Yeshua, the more than equal of any ferocious mother defending her young, then the enemy flees in terror.

Resist the devil and he will flee.. James 4:7-8  and only when we submit ourselves to our Heavenly Father.

However, our complete and ultimate victory comes when we allow the Shaleshim, the Third Warrior, Jesus Christ/Yeshua HaMashiach to join us, that our victory is absolutely assured.  The truth is that we can call upon that Third Warrior anytime we need Him.  We may not always see the spiritual power behind our Shaleshim, but the enemy certainly does and flees in terror at the very sound of the Name of this Third Warrior.

Messiah Jesus/Yeshua crushed demonic power continually throughout His ministry.
Our real enemy is the spirit behind the attack, our fight is not against flesh and blood.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, the rulers, against powers, the authorities, against the rulers of the darkness of this world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12

This is referring to the enemies that confront us in the spiritual realm. This present dark kingdom could be using a co-worker who is always difficult to deal with and causes us to constantly lose our peace and joy and then we react to them in an ungodly way. Another example could be someone reacting rudely to us while driving in traffic simply provoking us to react back at them. The dark kingdom continually uses people, situations and circumstances to attack us in the spiritual realm. It is at these times that Messiah teaches us how to connect and stay joined with Him, and deny ourselves and our fleshly, carnal, old man ways. Even when it’s painful, we are to daily carry our cross, deny those ways,

follow Him, think, speak and do as He would.

When we surrender our will to the Lord’s will within ourselves, He will come in power and demonstration in and through us as the Third Warrior. When He does, then His love flows through us to that unkind co-worker and begins a transformation in them too, because that change begins when we allow Yeshua/Jesus to first change us by the power of His Spirit of Holiness.

Only when our will is surrendered to His will can He use us as His vessel to flow in us, and through us, to affect and influence our circumstances in a powerful way as the Third Warrior.

All that Messiah imparted to His disciples includes entering the ongoing battle against the demonic powers, and in His name we are to set free those in bondage, He is our Deliverer, the Liberating King.

This is the truth that strengthens us to face the attack and enter the battle without fear.

15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.

In ancient warfare,

Goliath was known as

the 3rd Warrior

the best of the best – the elite!

Our Heavenly Father/Yeshua/Jesus is

the 3rd and ultimate warrior.

We can appear to the devil to be easy prey and seemingly powerless at times; but the Lord is NOT powerless and we should remember that when we trust in Him …

Who is it that the adversary sees coming? us?

or the shaleshim we serve??

Remember!

There is nothing wrong with a first warrior attempt to defeat the enemy, nor with that of a second warrior. God expects us to confront our enemies, but our ultimate victory comes when we are joined with the Shaleshim, the Third Warrior, Jesus Christ/Yeshua HaMashiach, then victory is really assured. 

Also remember the fact that we can call upon that third warrior anytime we need Him; and though we may not see the power behind our Shaleshim, the enemy certainly does and he will flee in terror at the very sound of the Name of the Third Warrior.

Whatever we do, let us do it as unto the third warrior,

the Shaleshim, Messiah, Jesus Christ, Yeshua Ha Mashiach.

What’s the connection between Nathaniel, Bartholomew, a Fig Tree, Jacob, and a Ladder?

According to John, the first 5 men who became the original disciples of Jesus/Yeshua were: John, Andrew, Simon who’s new name was Cephas/Peter, then Philip and Nathanael being number 5. The 12 are listed in Matthew 10:1-4.

Nathanael is an interesting character and he was called by another name, Bartholomew, in the Synoptic Gospels.

John 1:43-44 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.

Jesus went down to Galilee to attend the wedding at Cana…

When He reached Galilee, He first encountered Philip and called him as a disciple saying “Follow Me.”

The town of Bethsaida was the original birth place of both Andrew and Simon Peter who now live in Capernaum, located south of Galilee and east of Jordan River.

It was a place heavily influenced by foreigners, gentiles.

The names Andrew and Philip were typical Gentile/Greek names.

Philip’s name appears 12 times in the Gospel of John yet nothing more is said of him as an individual in the other gospels.

Who was this man Nathanael whom Philip went to find? John is the only writer to record the name Nathanael, it is not included in any of the lists of the twelve disciples recorded in the other Gospels but Bartholomew is and many consider Bartholomew to be the same person whom John calls Nathanael.

Another possibility is that Nathanael became a disciple of Messiah but was not one of the twelve, because He had other disciples in addition to the twelve. Nathanael makes a second appearance in John 21:2, where he is included in a list of disciples who saw the resurrected Messiah by the Sea of Tiberias. There he is called, “Nathanael of Cana in Galilee.” So we know that like Philip, Andrew and Simon, Nathanael was from the region of Galilee, and specifically he was from the town of Cana.

We are not told the circumstances of Messiahs’ meeting with Philip, or whether He already knew Philip when He called him to follow Him. The first impression that Philip had formed of Yeshua/Jesus was that He was the Messiah, the one who had been spoken of by Moses and the prophets. Philip was acquainted with the scriptures and knew that they spoke of a coming Messiah, One Who would bring deliverance to God’s people and establish God’s kingdom and he now believed that Jesus was the fulfillment of those promises. Philip was excited about this discovery and wanted to share the good news with his friend Nathanael and when Philip found Nathanael he said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph”. John 1:45. However, Nathanael however did not seem to be impressed and asked, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”  Nathanael’s focus was not that Philip thought he had found the Messiah, but the mention of the town of Nazareth.  Could anything good could come from a place like Nazareth, which was a small, insignificant town, not known for anything great. Could the Messiah, the one spoken of by Moses and the prophets, come from such a place?

First impressions are always considered the most important. The impression that we form of a person at our first meeting is often the impression that stays with us the longest. John records a series of first impressions that some people formed the first time they met Yeshua/Jesus. John the immerser identified Him as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” in John 1:29. and this was the first impression overheard by two of John’s disciples who then started following Yeshua/Jesus. One of them was Andrew, who after spending some time with Him, went to find his brother, Simon telling him, “We have found the Messiah.” Andrew had quickly come to the realization that Yeshua/Jesus was the Messiah, and wanted to tell his brother. Jesus/Yeshua decided to travel to Galilee the next day and when he met Philip He called him to follow Him. Philip then went to find his friend Nathanael and said to him,

John1:45. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.

Philip introduces Yeshua/Jesus as the fulfillment of all the prophecies pertaining to Messiah, beginning with Moses and concluding with the prophets. And added “Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph”.

Is what seems to have bothered Nathanael most, not that Yeshua/Jesus is “the son of Joseph,” but that He is “Yeshua/Jesus of Nazareth.”?  We also know that historically, Nazareth was despised by the Jews because a Roman Army garrison was located there! They considered it a town for betrayers! It was maybe a little prejudicial and if he had given into that thinking, without investigating further, he would have missed Messiah! However, Philip did not seek to get into an argument with Nathanael, he didn’t try to persuade him that he was wrong and something good could come from Nazareth. He simply invited him to Come and see for himself, then he could then make up his own mind.

Matt. 2:23 He will be called a Natzrati

Yeshua/Jesus is both Netzer/branch from the stock of Jesse /Yishai King David’s father. Is 11:1 and Nazareth from which Natan’el nathanael questioned. Natzaret can anything good come from there John 14:6. This is a remez referring to the many BRANCH prophesies in the Tanakh. For example: Ps. 22; Is. 52:13; 53:16.

It is not clever arguments that will convince people, but simply telling others what Jesus/Yeshua means to us. People must be able to see that Jesus/Yeshua has made a difference to our own lives, before they will be willing to come and see for themselves.

John1:47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”

In this statement:

Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit! 

Jesus/Yeshua evaluates and praises the character of Nathanael. There was no deceit, fraud or treachery in Nathanael. He is a genuine Israelite, a descendant of Jacob who fears and obeys God. This was what Messiah saw in Nathanael. Perhaps He was comparing Nathanael’s character and that of Jacob, his forefather. Jacob was known for his guile/deceit; after Jacob had tricked his brother Esau out of his blessing. In Genesis 27:35-36 Isaac said to Esau, “Your brother came deceitfully, and he has taken away your blessing.” Esau replied, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has cheated me these two times. He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing”. It was only later, when he ceased being deceitful, that God changed Jacob’s name to Israel. Nathanael was an Israelite, and therefore a descendant of Jacob, in whom there was no trace of deceit.

What did Nathanael think at that time? and why he was so surprised? 

Nathanael was amazed because Jesus/Yeshua intimated that He knew exactly what he was reading!

(Israel=Jacob’s new name because as Jacob= man of deceit.)

Nathanael would have known the story of Jacob and was Messiah saying that Nathanael was not 

old Jacob which is man of deceit but

new Jacob which is truly an Israelite?

Messiah knows what we are really like! 

and He did not need anyone to testify concerning man [and human nature], for He Himself knew what was in man [in their hearts—in the very core of their being].

John 2:25

The human heart has always been creative in finding new ways to deceive, however one thing we can do is to be on the lookout for people who reflect the character of Nathaniel. It would be first of all, someone who believes in our Heavenly Father’s promises; meaning, someone who hasn’t given into the world’s cynicism. Someone who has not stopped believing that, even if right now it seems very unlikely, there will be vines and fig trees for all, that our Heavenly Father can and will make it happen. That is the kind of faith we need.

Next is Nathanael’s response and Jesus’ reply.

John 1:48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

He had never met Yeshua/Jesus before, he maybe a little suprised as to how this man could have formed an opinion about him so quickly?

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

This immediate reply causes Nathanael to believe that Yesua/Jesus is the Messiah he was waiting for!

Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” John 1:49

This is a very important thing that we may have missed, Nathanael/Nathaniel was the the first one who recognized Messiah’s true identity, and the first one to say and emphatically declare He was the Son of God, King of Israel, which parallels him to the Magi in Matthew 2:1.

How was he convinced so quickly?

Then Jesus/Yeshua further confirms that He knew exactly what Nathanael was doing – but what was that?

In Israel custom and culture,

the fig tree is an idiom or a symbol of home.

It was understood as:

a private place for prayer, meditation and study

and on a practical level for its shade from the hot sun.

It is a place for Fellowship with God.

In Jewish thought, the idea of sitting under a fig tree

was an image of

peace and security.

1 Kings 4:25 pictures the peaceful conditions of Solomon’s reign, “And Judah and Israel dwelt in safety, from Dan even to Beersheba, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, all the days of Solomon.”

A man could sit under his fig tree, undisturbed and untroubled, praying and meditating upon God’s Word.

Next came the amazing statement in

John 1:50 Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”

He then added,

“Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

John 1:51.

Was this a final confirmation that Yeshua/Jesus knew everything Nathanael was reading and meditating on?  Was he reading and thinking about Jacob and that’s why Yeshua/Jesus prophetically declared what He was going to do… using the account of Jacob’s ladder as an illustration?

Jacob’s ladder is found in Genesis 28:12.

Then Jacob departed from Beersheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and put it under his head, and lay down in that place. He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your descendants.” Genesis 28:10-13

Here we are told that God spoke to Jacob in a dream. God often spoke to prophets in dreams and visions as indicated throughout scripture. The dream is unusual because Jacob sees a ladder that is placed on the earth and reaches into heaven. The Hebrew word for ladder is sullam, and it means ladder – not stairway. Some say that it’s not a ladder but a staircase because angels are going up and down it.

There are two key points that this is a ladder. One, if the Fathers’ Spirit of Holiness had wanted to say this was a stairway, He could have used the Hebrew word maala, which translates as stairway. 

Two, some scholars say that this must be a stairway because angels are going up and down at the same time. However the passage does not say that they are going up and down at the same time. Jacob saw a ladder in his dream with angels going up and down. If the angels were going up and down the ladder simultaneously it does not affect the message of the scripture.

This Hebrew word for ladder/sullam is used only one time and is more like a portal, a gateway, a door, and this was where Jerusalem is right now.

There are references to angels/messengers interacting with people in the old and new testaments. Is this the designated entrance/exit, Portal/gateway; through which they came and went, into and out of the spiritual and natural realms?

Some examples: Abraham, Lot, Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, Shepherds and the women at Messiahs tomb.

Jacob’s Ladder in Hebrew:

סֻלָּם יַעֲקֹב  Sūllām Ya‘aqōv

is a ladder leading to heaven. 

There is no explanation given in scripture as to why the ladder and angels appeared in the dream. However, they appear to symbolize that God is communicating with Jacob as the Hebrew word for angel, malak, actually means:messenger; and God is standing at the top of the ladder. It has become known as Jacob’s ladder and has come to symbolize a connection between Earth and Heaven (or the cosmos), as well as the history of mankind, in which the steps of the ladder represent the succession of the worlds’ ruling kingdoms.

Recall that Jacob’s dream happened as he fled from Esau, his twin brother. According to the story in Genesis, Jacob is said to have stolen his brother Esau’s birthright, which was his claim to inheritance and his father’s blessing. As a result of this, Esau was furious with Jacob, and sought to kill him. Jacob was warned of his brother’s intention by Rebekah, their mother. He was also told to flee, and to go to the house of his uncle, Laban, in Haran, until Esau’s fury subsided.  On the journey, Jacob arrived at a certain place, and as the sun had already gone down, he decided to stay there for the night. According to one source, this place was the site of the future Temple Mount in Jerusalem, which was also the site of the binding of his father, Isaac. Jacob then took a stone and used it as a pillow and fell asleep, and while he was sleeping he had his dream about the ladder that connected heaven to earth.

In the dream God repeats the covenant promises made to Abraham and Isaac regarding a homeland for their descendants:

Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Genesis 28:14-15 (NASB)

God promises to fulfill the covenant and never leave him. The entire dream reveals our Fathers’ sovereignty and faithfulness to His covenant; though Abraham and Isaac were dead, God would remain faithful.

Messiah Jesus/Yeshua as God/man now intercedes between us and our Heavenly Father God as

the Ladder between heaven and earth.

John 14:6-7 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Messiah tells Nathanael 

“From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Nathanael the man who saw for himself!

When Yeshua/Jesus said, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Nathanael’s reaction indicates that there is more to this than Him simply seeing Nathanael sitting under a fig tree. Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the  Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” (John 1:49). There was something significant in those words that had a tremendous impact upon Nathanael. It is not just that Messiah saw him sitting under a fig tree that caused Nathanael to proclaim Him to be the Son of God and the King of Israel. Wasn’t it that when Nathanael heard these words he recognized that Jesus/Yeshua possessed a clear insight into the things he was thinking about under the fig tree? Was it Yeshua/Jesus’ intimate knowledge of the thoughts and meditations of Nathanael’s heart that produced this reaction? Nathanael realized that Yeshua/Jesus had seen into the depths of his heart where he had the faith that Jesus/Yeshua must be the Son of God and the King of Israel, because by using these titles, Nathanael expressed his absolute belief that Jesus/Yeshua was the Messiah.

Messiah knew what was in Philip and Nathanael, Andrew and John.

He knows what is in us when He saves us. 

He also knows what He will do in and through us, by His grace and power, He knows our character, our weaknesses and our strengths. 

Most of all, He knows what He has purposed to achieve in us, and He will achieve it: 

“I am sure that the One who began a good work in you will carry it on until it is completed. That will be on the day Christ Jesus returns.” Philippians 1:6

Jesus/Yeshua will later go on to expand the “angels ascending and descending” to say that “no one has gone up to heaven except the One who has come down from heaven” (John 3:13) and to say “I am the way”(that leads to the Father) (John 14:6).

In this dream, Jacob saw a ladder that connected heaven to earth and saw God at the top of the ladder. 

Here is a promise that because of his belief in Yeshua/Jesus as the Messiah, Nathanael will be blessed to witness greater evidences of Yeshua/Jesus’ deity and Messiahship. As a disciple, Nathanael must have witnessed many of the miracles that He performed, and surely the greatest of all would’ve been to witness the resurrection. Yeshua/Jesus told Nathanael what he would see, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man” John 1:51. referring to the incident from Jacob’s life, recorded in Genesis 28:10-17, Jesus/Yeshua suggests to Nathanael that He is that Ladder between heaven and earth. The picture of the angels ascending and descending upon the Son of man implies that communion/relationship between heaven and earth is established through Messiah; He is that connection or mediator between mankind and God. It was prophetic that Nathanael would be privileged to witness these things by becoming His disciple.

Jesus/Yeshua praised Nathaniel because there was no deceit in him. The word deceit is used most often for someone who is being sneaky or treacherous; often a person is outwardly nice but is scheming to take advantage of another. One of our sins in dealing with others is using them for our purpose rather than for theirs, or God’s.

 In less obvious ways we’re not aware of how much we use others for our own purposes with little to no care for their interests.  Our Savior took on horrendous sufferings in His human nature to give us the incredible gift of eternal life. The lesson He gave us..  “You shall love one another as I have loved you” John 15:12. To love like He did, is to love others without self-interest. Not in loving just so we look good to others or so they can be a help to our personal plans.

When we live without deceit and without being sneaky, we love like He did. “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Galatians 2:20.

And we also need Nathaniels, who are not in it just for themselves – not just for their own fig tree, but who are willing to hold out for the whole community to have what they need to survive, and how much we are in need of that these days!

We need Nathaniels who are not afraid to speak up and share the truth as they see it, even if it is the truth about the Branch from Nazareth that no one wants to hear, no matter what it might cost!

We need Nathaniels and we need to be looking for them underneath the fig trees of this world, which means we need to start spending time under those fig trees ourselves. Isn’t that why Jesus/Yeshua found a kindred spirit in Nathaniel, He was doing the same thing? In order to find a Nathaniel, we need to be a Nathaniel.

There is one more reference worth mentioning concerning

the fig tree.

When a New Testament writer leaves something unexplained, as he does this scripture, it’s the writers intention for readers to search for the meaning and interpretation in the Old Testament scriptures.

As there is an idiom here which was understood as specifically  coming from a promise that is repeated a few times in the Old Testament. The promise goes like this: “They shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees, and no one shall make them afraid.” (Micah 4:4)

1 In days to come
the mountain of the Lord’s house
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
and shall be raised up above the hills.
Peoples shall stream to it,
    and many nations shall come and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the house of the God of Jacob;
that he may teach us his ways
and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth instruction,
and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between many peoples,
and shall arbitrate between strong nations far away;
they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more;
but they shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees,
and no one shall make them afraid;
for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken.

In many ways, that is one of the key promises of the Old Testament. It envisions a nation where every family has its own little piece of land, with the iconic fruit trees that are common in that part of the world. It  gives a vision of an agricultural society where everybody has the basics of survival.

This shows us how tough life could be back then, if their big dream was just to be able to have their own vine and fig tree. Many talk about their dream life/home etc., well that was an Israelite dream; and a part of that dream was for a bit of leisure time – to be able to sit down underneath their own fig trees for a while.

This is why it later became an expression for discussing the Torah when, in later times, Jewish men became prosperous enough to have a little bit of leisure time. In Nathaniel’s day that most basic Israelite dream of every family having a fig tree and a vine to live under had become completely out of reach for huge numbers of people. People had lost their family farms and vines and fig trees. Huge numbers in the population were consigned to living as slaves or just getting by, working as day laborers. Maybe what Yehsua/Jesus saw in Nathaniel was that he was trying to keep that ancient Israelite dream alive?

It’s interesting that He refers to Nathaniel as an Israelite, that word is rarely used in the New Testament. It had become outdated, like the dream of everyone having their own vine and fig tree. In Jesus’ day normal word that would have been used was Judean or Galilean, which means they’d begun to call themselves what the Romans called them. However, Messiah sees Nathaniel as an Israelite sitting underneath a fig tree.

Maybe Nathaniel had been doing what he could to keep that dream alive, reminding people of God’s promise that “They shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees, and no one shall make them afraid.”

If Nathanael’s first impression was that nothing good could come from Nazareth; it was quickly shown to be a false when he met Jesus/Yeshua, he declared Him to be the Son of God, the King of Israel. By accepting Philip’s invitation to “Come and see” Nathanael had come to his own conclusion about Jesus which had led to this expression of faith.

In this he is an example to all those who are willing to search out matters for themselves. His response in declaring Him to be “the Son of God…the King of Israel” is what the correct response should be when someone comes in contact with Jesus/Yeshua and has seen for themselves.

Nathanael the man who saw for himself

Nathaniel wasn’t under the fig tree to impress anyone, he wasn’t trying to be religious nor was he trying to create a reputation – he was searching for his Heavenly Father. We must not have a faith that’s found in someone else’s experience; we must find our own fig tree and search for our Heavenly Father and like Nathanael, find Him for ourselves.

When we are sitting under our fig tree let’s be sure we are meditating not on our personal dream home and earthly future, but that of Jacob/Israel, who saw heaven opened and the Way to our heavenly home up the Ladder.

Shamayim

Hebrew: שָׁמַיִם‎  šāmayīm, “heavens”

is the dwelling place of God, other heavenly beings and very soon also His Bride!

Whatever visions or dreams we may have through life, the one that will outshine them all is when we see Jesus/Yeshua for ourselves and know that He is the Messiah, the Way the Truth and the Life everlasting.
