Break The Flask

He who believes in me

out of his heart

will flow……

He who believes in Me [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Me], as the Scripture has said, ‘From his innermost being will flow continually rivers of living water.’” John 7:38.

Our Heavenly Fathers purpose is not just to make us beautiful grapes but to be those He can squeeze the sweet juice out of. We are crushed to make that wine of joy because our spiritual life cannot be measured by success as the world measures success, but only by what He pours through us… His living water… and we cannot measure that at all. His purpose is not to develop us as an individual person but to make us exactly like Himself. If we want to know what we are to become then we must take the time to look at His life.

His life was characterized by self expenditure and it’s not what we gain by the life our Heavenly Father gave us but rather what He pours through us when we get out of His Way. Unlike the ways of this world, His teaching and lifestyle was always the opposite of self realization.

We are all familiar with the story of Mary of Bethany who broke her alabaster flask of pure spikenard.

More importantly is the fact that Messiah said what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her wherever the gospel is preached; and here we are remembering her actions once again.

Wherever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, which this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. Matthew 26:13

There is a spiritual key in this scripture to remind the reader that If we want Messiah to be joy-filled…

then we need to do what Mary did

because as He said in verse 10:

she has done a beautiful thing for Me.

Mary was not bound by any particular set of rules because she was totally surrendered to Him and honestly didn’t care what people thought. She was free from public opinion and not in bondage to religious tradition or any denominational doctrine.

Can we say the same?

What she did was an act of total surrender, she was emptying herself before Messiah by pouring out all that was of value to her.

It was a picture of her self pouring out her life for Him.

No one else but Yeshua/Jesus saw its true meaning and it touched Him so deeply that He brought everyones attention to what she was doing.

There were those who criticized her and called it a waste but Yeshua/ Jesus saw it as an act of supreme devotion. He poured out His life and His Father allowed Him to be that extravagant example by willingly laying down His physical and spiritual life that through it the world might be saved. John 3:17.

He is calling us to do the same because...

He who believes in Me

out of His heart will flow living waters.

Are we prepared to pour out our lives for Him?

When we do, when we break the (alabaster) flask of our life, other lives will be continually refreshed.

Being broken is not the same as being cracked, we are cracked when external circumstances cause the injuries which are incurred from following our own ways. When we choose to be broken for Him, is when we stop seeking our own satisfaction and decide to pour out our lives before Him.

If you have not yet done so...

it’s time to break the flask.

And it takes faith to do it…

Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

There is no self denial possible without full surrender.
