Our Heavenly Father Knows And Sees

We all need encouragement and never more than in these days of uncertainty. Our feet need to be firmly planted on the Rock of our Salvation. We should be in a position of unshakeable faith in our Heavenly Father and our Lord and Messiah Yeshua/Jesus, abiding in Him and keeping our eyes firmly fixed on Him and not on the issues and circumstances in the world around us.

Matthew 6:31-33

31 Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles strive after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.…

Luke 12:6-7
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. / And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

We turn to familiar scriptures to comfort and strengthen our faith, scriptures that give us confidence our Heavenly Father knows what is happening and sees our situations as is not taken by surprise. He knows our future and sees our heart of trust depending on Him to protect us and lead us through our troubles. He ensures that the testing and trial of our faith is never above what we can handle. 1Cor. 10:13 No trial has overtaken you that is not distinctively human; and God is faithful; · he will not let you be tested beyond what you can bear, but with the trial will also provide the way through, so that you will be able to endure it.

Among the many promises in scripture there is one in

Psalm 139:5: “Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.”

This verse has been translated in a number of ways…

but what does the Hebrew say… literally?

Behind and before You take hold of me and You have laid upon me Your Hand.

Breaking down the Hebrew words in this verse gives us a wider understanding of the thoughts behind Davids statement:

achor: Back, behind, backward

Original Word: אָחוֹר
Part of Speech: substantive
Transliteration: achowr
Pronunciation: a-khor
Phonetic Spelling: (aw-khore’)
KJV: after(-ward), back (part, -side, -ward), hereafter, (be-)hind(-er part), time to come, without
NASB: back, backward, rear, afterward, away, backs, behind
Word Origin: [from H299 (אֲחִירַע – Ahira)]
afterward, back part hereafter, hinder part, time to come, without
(hence, adverbly) behind, backward (also, as facing north) the West

אָחוֹר (’achor) occurs about forty-one times, functioning adverbially (“back, backward, behind”) and as a noun (“rear, hinder part”). Scripture uses it both literally—describing spatial orientation—and metaphorically—expressing retreat, apostasy, concealment, shame, and divine protection.

Assurance of victory: Prayer trusts God to make spiritual adversaries retreat

ṣar·tā·nî

Psalm 139:5
HEB: אָח֣וֹר וָקֶ֣דֶם צַרְתָּ֑נִי וַתָּ֖שֶׁת עָלַ֣י
NAS: You have enclosed me behind
KJV: Thou hast beset me behind and before,
INT: behind and before have enclosed and laid and

6924 qedem: East, ancient times, antiquity, front, before

Original Word: קֶדֶם
Part of Speech: noun masculine; adverb; noun
Transliteration: qedem
Pronunciation: keh’-dem
Phonetic Spelling: (keh’-dem)
KJV: aforetime, ancient (time), before, east (end, part, side, -ward), eternal, X ever(-lasting), forward, old, past
Word Origin: [from H6923 (קָדַם – meet)]

  1. the front, of place (absolutely, the fore part, relatively the East) or time (antiquity)

    2. often used adverbially (before, anciently, eastward)

The Strongs word 6696 in Hebrew for beset is

tsur or tsuwr:

To bind, besiege, confine, cramp

Original Word: צוּר
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: tsuwr
Pronunciation: tsoor
Phonetic Spelling: (tsoor)

The verb צוּר (Strong’s 6696) portrays the purposeful act of hemming in—whether by an enemy army, by difficult circumstances, or by the Lord Himself. Its roughly thirty-six occurrences fall largely into military narratives, covenant warnings, wisdom reflections, and prophetic oracles. The word’s range moves from hostile siege to benevolent encirclement, revealing the Lord’s sovereign control of both judgment and protection. Strong’s Hebrew 6696 presents siege not merely as an ancient military tactic but as a theological instrument revealing the Lord’s righteous judgment, protective care, and redemptive purpose. Whether depicting armies at city walls or God’s hand surrounding His own, the verb summons every generation to covenant faithfulness and confident trust in the One who alone controls the boundaries of distress and deliverance.

KJV: adversary, assault, beset, besiege, bind (up), cast, distress, fashion, fortify, inclose, lay siege, put up in bags

צוּר verb confine, bind, besiege (Late Hebrew id., wrap (rare); Aramaic צוּר besiege, beleaguer); —

Indicating Sovereign control: God employs siege to discipline or to shelter, demonstrating mastery over human warfare.
2. Covenant accountability: Siege fulfills covenant blessings or curses, linking military events to spiritual realities.
3. Protective encirclement: For the faithful, being ‘hemmed in’ signifies safety within God’s providence.
4. Eschatological preview: The transition from judgment to protection anticipates the consummate security of God’s people in the Messianic age.

When believers feel confined by trials, Psalm 139:5 invites them to interpret the hemming in as God’s purposeful care rather than mere limitation.
• Intercession for Nations: Biblical sieges warn modern societies that persistent rebellion invites divine discipline; prayer should therefore combine repentance with appeal for mercy.
• Spiritual Warfare: Christians may build “siege works” of prayer and Scripture against strongholds of sin (cf. 2 Corinthians 10:4), appropriating the constructive use of the verb.
• Hope in Christ: Just as Zechariah foresaw God’s encampment around His house, believers rest in the risen Christ who “will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5), the ultimate assurance that no hostile encirclement can prevail.

Fortified – tsur צ ור  is also used for a fortress or fortified city.

As noted, the word for behind is ‘achor which has the idea of behind or past, and the word qedem means to go forward. That word ends in Hebrew with a closed letter mem, which indicates the hidden or unknown, as is the future which is yet to unfold. The words “‘achor vaqedem” expresses both the things that are behind us in the past and whatever is ahead of us in our future. This is very encouraging as it confirms to us that our Heavenly Father tsur /besets us/ encloses us, in a protective way both in our past and future.

The word tsur is used as a verb in this verse and is in a qal perfect form. Qal Perfect 2 masculine singular – shut up, enclose:  And can be expressed as

you have entrenched me or fortified me.

Or simply:

In my past and in my future you have already fortified or entrenched me.

In Davids situation there was unrest in the nation and the future was not too bright; there were threats from the Assyrians and to his own throne when his son revolted and David had to flee from his kingdom with a price on his head.  David daily faced the ever increasing pressures of being a king, but when he woke up in the morning not knowing what would happen, he was reminded that our Heavenly Father had fortified him, entrenched him and as noted, another expression for sur is hedged him. That hedge or fortress was around him in his past and it was around him in the present and would continue to be around him in the future.

David then says: You laid your hand upon me. Here the word laid /tasheth is actually in a future tense and means to place or set.

7896 shith: To put, place, set, appoint, make

Original Word: שִׁית
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: shiyth
Pronunciation: sheeth
Phonetic Spelling: (sheeth)
KJV: apply, appoint, array, bring, consider, lay (up), let alone, X look, make, mark, put (on), + regard, set, shew, be stayed, X take
NASB: set, make, put, laid, made, lay, demanded
Word Origin: [a primitive root]

“You will set me in – kap·pe·ḵāh -.your hand

3709 kaph: Palm, hand, hollow, sole

Original Word: כַּף
Part of Speech: Noun Feminine
Transliteration: kaph
Pronunciation: kaf
Phonetic Spelling: (kaf)
KJV: branch, + foot, hand((-ful), -dle, (-led)), hollow, middle, palm, paw, power, sole, spoon
NASB: hands, hand, pan, sole, pans, palm, soles
Word Origin: [from H3721 (כָּפַף – bowed down)]

1. the hollow hand or palm (so of the paw of an animal, of the sole, and even of the bowl of a dish or sling, the handle of a bolt, the leaves of a palm-tree)
2. (figuratively) power

The verse literally says:

You have set me in the palm of your hand.

or

We are sheltered in the hollow of His hand.

Recall from previous posts that back in those days, they believed a persons heart was in the palm of the hand; so with this in mind, David was saying that he will not fear or live in dread of the future, because he is sheltered in the heart of his Heavenly Father.

Peoples fears of the future are increasing with negative news reports fueling those anxieties, and we could spend all day worrying and fretting over the uncertainty of what may or may not happen; or we can be like David who said:  My past, present, and future is hemmed in, enclosed, entrenched, sheltered in You.  If any disaster happens, You will tsur – fortify me. I will be sheltered in the hollow of Your hand or I will be resting in Your heart whatever comes, You already know and see all my past present and future.

Don’t look at the world and all the problems and allow fear to rise in your mind, look to Jesus/Yeshua, the author and finisher of our faith.

Our Heavenly Father knows and sees…

and will never leave us nor forsake us. Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face and the things of the world will grow strangely dim in the light of His Glory and Grace; and let the true shalom, the peace that passes all understanding fill our hearts and minds and dwell in us richly.

Shalom, shalom mishpachah/family

and cheverim/friends!

It’s all about Life and Relationship,

NOT Religion.

You are greatly loved and precious in His sight.

NOT SURE?

YOU CAN BE..

SAY THE FOLLOWING FROM YOUR HEART RIGHT NOW…

Heavenly Father I come to you in the Name of Jesus/Yeshua asking for forgiveness of my sins for which I am truly sorry. I repent of them all and turn away from my past.

I believe with my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus/Yeshua is your Son and that He died on the cross at calvary to pay the price for my sin, so that I might be forgiven and have eternal life in the kingdom of Heaven. Father I believe that Jesus/Yeshua rose from the dead and I ask you to come into my life right now and be my personal Savior and Lord and I will worship you all the days of my life. Because your word is truth I say that I am now forgiven and born again and by faith I am washed clean with the blood of Jesus/Yeshua. Thank you that you have accepted me into your family in Jesus’/Yeshua’s name. Amen.

Who Were The Wise Men and Sorcerers?

Wise men are mentioned in the Torah, Tenach and the Brit Chadashah. (Old and New Testaments.)

What is meant by wise men?

Were they simply very knowledgeable individuals or something else?

The two scriptures that may be most familiar to us are in Exodus 7:11-12 and Daniel, chapters 2,4 &5. Also in Matthew 2 and Luke 2:1-19. Proverbs speaks much of wisdom but is that the same thing?

The wisdom of Proverbs comes from the Fathers Holy Spirit so it is definitely not the same thing.

In the first instance in Exodus 7:11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs.

We may have a tendency to put all these occult, witchcraft and mystical practices into the same category. Exodus 22:18 tells us

Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

Sorcerers and witches are not the same thing. Exodus 22:18 uses the English word witch but its really the word kashaph or sorcerer.

HEB: מְכַשֵּׁפָ֖ה לֹ֥א תְחַיֶּֽה׃
NAS: You shall not allow a sorceress to live.
KJV: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

The Bible condemns magicians enchanters mediums astrologers witches wizards and sorcerers. Yet todays societies are replete with many forms of these condemned practices, modern entertainment has openly embraced them, causing many Christians to think it is acceptable and willingly become enchanted by the subtleties of the satanic realms. These are all different practices that the Bible calls abominations because they all involve the sprit world specifically evil or demonic spirits.

1 Samuel 15:23: “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.” Rebellion and Stubbornness: These terms refer to a deliberate refusal to obey God’s commands, a hardening of the heart against His will.

בְּלַהֲטֵיהֶ֖ם (bə·la·hă·ṭê·hem)

Strong’s 3858: A blaze, magic

All the Hebrew words for these practices have English equivalents which are very close to the original. The only one that doesn’t is kashaph in Hebrew which we translate as sorcerer. The sorcerers were the scientists of their day! We are often told by the media to trust the science! The word sorcery in the dictionary tells us it’s the art and practice of casting spells on people or things, often called black magic or witchery. White witchcraft is still witchcraft. This is our modern definition of kashaph or sorcery but this is not a very well defined meaning and does not explain what it is. Sorcerers changed things so they took on a new appearance and the middle eastern origin of the word has the idea of deception through the change in appearance or image. Exodus 7 is a classic example of the work of a sorcerer. The magicians worked together with the sorcerers they were the front men and the sorcerers worked behind the scenes. It was really the enchantments of the sorcerers who changed the rod into snakes.

The Egyptian “magicians” of this time were jugglers of a high class, well skilled in serpent-charming and other similar arts, but not always possessed of any supernatural powers. The magicians of Egypt did in like manner with their enchantments. The magicians, aware of the wonder which would probably be wrought, had prepared themselves; they had brought serpents, charmed and stiffened so as to look like rods (a common trick in Egypt: ‘Description de l’Egypte,’ vol. 1. p. 159) in their hands; and when Aaron’s rod became a serpent, they threw their stiffened snakes upon the ground, and disenchanted them, so that they were seen to be what they were – shakos, and not really rods.

The Greek word for Sorcerer is pharmakeia

and where our word pharmacy has its origin.

Original Word: φαρμακεία
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Transliteration: pharmakeia
Pronunciation: far-mak-I-ah
Phonetic Spelling: (far-mak-i’-ah)
KJV: sorcery, witchcraft
NASB: sorcery, sorceries
Word Origin: [from G5332 (φαρμακεύς – Sorcerer)]
sorcery, witchcraft.

From pharmakeus; medication (“pharmacy”), i.e. (by extension) magic (literally or figuratively) — sorcery, witchcraft. the use of medicine, drugs or spells

5331 pharmakeía (from pharmakeuō, “administer drugs”) – properly, drug-related sorcery, like the practice of magical-arts,

Strong’s Greek 5331 denotes the practice of manipulating human life or circumstances through potions, drugs, or magical arts that invoke supernatural influence apart from the living God. In Scripture it is consistently grouped with sins that fracture covenant fidelity, whether toward God (idolatry) or neighbor (hatred, jealousy, murder). While the modern term “pharmacy” descends from the same root, the biblical concern is not legitimate medicine but the use of substances or rituals to gain illicit spiritual power or to deceive.

  1. the use of drugs, potions, and enchantments

    2. poisoning (“pharmacy”)

    3. (by extension) the occult, witchcraft

    4. (by implication) the remedy, the cure

    {literally or figuratively}

Pharmakeia is a Greek word that primarily means the use or administering of drugs, but it is also associated with sorcery and witchcraft in biblical contexts. It appears in the New Testament, notably in Galatians 5:20, where it is translated as “witchcraft.”

Galatians 5:20 N-NFS
GRK: εἰδωλολατρία φαρμακεία ἔχθραι ἔρις

When our scientists use genetic engineering on various drugs to mass produce them GMO’S it is called pharming ( not farming), but in the scriptures we translate it as sorcery. It’s called that because in it very root it means to alter or to change the essence of something. This is the root meaning of the word kashaph to alter or change the very essence of a plant, animal or person. These sorcerers were actually using satanic or supernatural power and knowledge to alter our Heavenly Fathers creation which was absolutely forbidden. To change or alter the very essence of a plant animal or person by splicing DNA and gene therapy thereby modifying or manipulating the very building blocks of life as Adonai created it, is the exact sin that pervaded the days of Noah where all flesh had been corrupted, and only Noah was perfect in his generations, meaning his DNA had not been tampered with and corrupted. We are warned by Messiah Himself, in Matthew 24:37 that the end of the age will be as the days of Noah!

We call the changing of the essence of a creature, genetic modification, do we think we can improve on what the Lord God Creator of the universe can do? We try to alter things and people into something different by going into the very genetic makeup and literally changing the genes, the blueprint of creation given by our Father.

The devil and his angels that fell with him lost their position, not their God given powers and abilities. Scripture consistently teaches that Satan possesses real but limited power. His influence includes deception, temptation, and disruption of God’s design, 1 Peter 5:8. However, Satan remains a created being, subordinate to the omnipotence of God. Even when Satan’s minions perform counterfeit miracles, their scope remains restricted by divine boundaries. Job 1:12; 2:6.

They cannot create in the same way our Heavenly Father can; however they can manipulate matter that already exists and share their forbidden knowledge with those who will choose them and their ways over our Heavenly Father and His. The Scripture declares that a kashaph – one who alters the very essence of life, should not be allowed to live. It may be too uncomfortable to say that the worlds food production through GMO’s and our supply of drugs through pharming or genetic modification is really kashaph –sorcery, but it certainly gives one pause for thought.

The reference to Wise Men from the East, often referred to as the Magi, are figures mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew, specifically in Matthew 2:1-12. They are described as learned men who traveled from the East to Jerusalem, guided by a star, to pay homage to the newborn King of the Jews, Jesus Christ.

The magicians are called khakamim, “wise men,” “men educated in human and divine wisdom” (Keil and Delitzsch); mekashshephim, “charmers,” “mutterers of magic words” (Gesenius); and khartummim, which is thought to mean either “sacred scribes” or “bearers of sacred words” (Cook). The word translated “enchantments” is lehatim, which means “secret” or “hidden arts” (Gesenius).

They were wise men, or magi, from the East. At the time, the term magi was used to describe learned men who studied astrology and astronomy, and who were interested in philosophy, dreams, and any knowledge that could broaden their understanding. The Eastern lands in that period correspond to what we now know as Iraq, Yemen, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, the Bible does not tell us the names of the wise men or how many there were in total. By tradition and because they brought three gifts, popular belief is that there were three wise men. They have been given the names Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar, but this is not a biblical fact.`

These magi were not sorcerers or magicians nor were they astrologers although they did observe the stars. These Magi were Jewish sages, wise men who came from the Medo-Persian Empire or Babylon; in the Diaspora jews during and after the time of Yeshua lived in Persia/Iran and had been there since the time of the prophet Daniel. Numbers 24:11 references the Star from Ya’akov and Micah 5:1-2. As Hebrew scholars they would have known the Messianic prophesies well. Historically Christian theologians have mistakenly insisted that the term magi was used as the name for priests and wise men among the Medo-Persians and Babylonians. These persons were supposed to be adept in that secret learning which in ages past had its seat and origins in Egypt and later in Chaldea from which they were later called chaldeans. Most christian scholars argue that the Magi were Gentiles and of pagan origin; however recent archeological evidence has proved that the Magi were neither gentiles nor astrologers, (stargazers) but in fact were Jewish sages/wise men. Babylon was still the place of residence for the majority of the Jewish community even as Matthew was writing in the first century. Scholars now agree that the origin of these Magi are linked to the prophet Daniel around 500 BCE, who, in the diaspora waited for the time promised of return and the restoration of Israel. There are some who have speculated that these wise men came form a Hebrew/Jewish school that originated in Daniels day, where the prophets looked to the heavens for the promised arrival of the Messiah. The star in the East was in fact a manifestation of Adonai’s Shekinah The Divine Presence/His Glory marking the arrival of the Son of man, (angelic beings are also called stars in many scripture references). It is sad in many ways that the Christian denominations persist in excluding any Historical evidence of Jewish/Hebrew origins in many of their doctrines, dogmas and traditions; because they miss the truth which far exceeds ideas of men and because it reveals our Heavenly Father’s perfect timing and plan in all things.

Exodus 7:11 shows Pharaoh gathering together every earthly and occult resource to challenge the Adonai. His magicians can copy the surface miracle, but satanic imitation is not divine liberation. God’s unrivaled supremacy, the reality of demonic counterfeits, and the futility of resisting divine authority is clearly revealed in these events.

In the days that lie in front of us, we will be confronted by very convincing ‘lying signs and wonders’ and we will need the true wisdom of our Fathers Holy Spirit giving us the ability to discern good from evil and expose the counterfeit manifestations of demonic powers. Matthew 24:24

“False christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive…” This passage warns that Satan’s kingdom can manifest impressive deeds, aiming to lead people astray. From the earliest books of the Bible, there are accounts of individuals who perform supernatural acts through demonic power.

In various cultures and time periods, documented testimonies exist of occult practitioners displaying seemingly supernatural abilities-ranging from fortune-telling and spirit channelling to poltergeist phenomena. Ancient writings, such as those by Greek and Roman historians referencing sorcerers in their societies, align with biblical accounts that demonic forces can influence the physical realm.

Archaeological discoveries in regions such as Mesopotamia reveal tablets describing incantations and rituals aimed at enlisting spirits. These findings corroborate the biblical view that humanity has long sought supernatural assistance beyond God. While not every unexplained phenomenon is certifiably ‘demonic.’

Scripture cautions believers to remain watchful.

Authentic miracles will point to Christ and uphold godly principles. Demonic miracles often contradict or undermine Scripture. Works truly from our Heavenly Father are accompanied by spiritual fruit Galatians 5:22-23-love, joy, peace, etc. Demonic signs tend to engender fear, pride, exploitation, false promises or idolatry.

The confrontation between Moses and the magicians is a reminder of the spiritual warfare believers face. We must be equipped with the full armor of God to stand firm against spiritual deception. Eph 6. Demonic and satanic miracles refer to supernatural acts, signs, or wonders attributed to evil spiritual beings. These include counterfeit miracles performed by demons or by Satan himself, intended to deceive or mislead people away from truth. According to Scripture, there exist genuine miracles from God (e.g., Messiah healing the blind) and deceptive, malevolent wonders orchestrated by forces of darkness. Demonic or satanic miracles are always directed toward distracting individuals from God’s truth. Such acts may mimic divine miracles-but the objective is to twist truth, sow confusion, or elevate the performer over the Creator. A chief goal is to foster idolatry or occult practices that replace worship of the one true God with fear or veneration of evil powers. Deuteronomy 18:10-12.

The Bible urges caution against the fascination with demonic or satanic miracles and more recently the upsurge in ufo’s, uso’s and uap’s. Seeking out occult experiences inevitably opens the door to deception. Consequently, the biblical command is to cling to truth and turn from practices that involve spiritism or necromancy. Deuteronomy 18:9-14.

Believers are called to test all supernatural claims against the authority of Scripture, recognizing that signs leading away from the true God reveal their demonic origin. By staying rooted in truth and relying on the Holy Spirit, Christians can discern between God’s authentic miracles and the devil’s fraudulent displays.

Though demons may perform powerful signs, Scripture underscores our Heavenly Father’s supreme authority. Just as Yeshua/Jesus cast out demons (Luke 4:33-36) and gave His disciples power over them (Mark 6:7), the Church/ecclesia, is equipped to stand firm. Believers are assured that Adonai is supreme (Colossians 2:15), having disarmed the powers of darkness at the cross.

Despite the magicians’ efforts, God’s plan for the Israelites’ deliverance was unstoppable. This reassures us of His sovereignty in our lives and His ultimate control over all circumstances.

Our part is to stay close to our Lord and Savior and to make certain we are not in any way relying on or connected to anything resembling sorcery witchcraft or the occult. Making sure we reject all spiritual shortcuts—horoscopes, charms, psychoactive experimentation used for mystical insight. Uphold responsible medical science while avoiding treatments laced with occult ritual. Engage culture with the gospel, exposing counterfeit spiritualities that promise healing or enlightenment apart from Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ.

Revelation portrays sorcery as a sure sign of the end-time world system. Its ultimate defeat assures believers that every deceptive power will yield to the Messiah’s reign. Faithful endurance requires continual faithfulness and allegiance to our Father’s truth, trusting His sovereign control rather than any human-engineered remedy for sin or suffering.

Why Were They Chosen?

We are a chosen generation

a royal priesthood according to 1Peter 2:4-10.

But what does that really mean?

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light; verse 9.

By reading the whole verse we understand there is a specific reason for these titles. We have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light and reading further in context: 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from the desires of the flesh, which war against your soul. 12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles that, though they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.…

Being part of a chosen generation is not just about privilege and status; it also comes with responsibilities. We are called to reflect our Heavenly Father’s love within our communities and to others. As we acknowledge this role, we can look to the scriptures that remind us just what the Royal Priesthood was and the conditions that had to be met for being a priest. Modern images of a priest are very different from the days of Moses and the calling of the very first priesthood.

Leviticus 21 gives us the origins of the Levitical Priesthood and the commandments given by the Lord through moses.

Recall Jacobs 12 sons. Jacob became known as Israel when God changed his name, His sons became the 12 tribes of Israel. Levi was one of the 12 who had 3 sons. They were named

Gershon meaning exile

Kohath meaning assembly and

Merari meaning bitter.

These 3 became heads of the clans of the Levites. (Gen. 46:11;Ex 6:16-26). From among the Levites, Levis great grandson Aaron and his descendants were chosen to be His priests (Num.17:1-10). The choice was possibly because Moses was reluctant to speak to Pharaoh when first told to rescue his people from Egypt.

What we may not have realized is that there are 3 classes within the structure of Hebrew society.

The Kohen, the Levite and the Israelite.

Only the kohanim/priests, are physical descendants of Aaron and given the priestly duties of offering sacrifices/korbanot. The other descendants of Levi were assigned roles to help in the care and maintenance of the tabernacle/mishkan. These duties included carrying certain vessels, taking down the mishkan and reassembling it when they moved camp, etc. Only the Kohanim were allowed to do the priestly service or perform avodah on behalf of Israel the people. This means that the Kohanim are a part of the tribe of Levi and that while every Levite is an Israelite, meaning they are a descendant of Israel/Jacob, not every Levite who is a descendant of Levi is a Kohen or descendant of Aaron. See chart.

So what does this mean concerning our original question of why were they chosen?

One word will answer that question:

Loyalty

The tribe of Levi was chosen to serve in the Mishkan because of their loyalty to the Lord God of Israel during times of threat, temptation and danger. This was clear when they refused to be any part of the sin of the golden calf and instead killed 3000 of the rebellious participants. Aarons descendants were also rewarded with being Kohanim/priests, because of their loyal service with Moses as they made their Exodus from Egypt. Because the Kohanim were set apart (ecclesia), for direct service to the Lord, there were special responsibilities and additional restrictions that applied to them but not to the rest of the Levite clan. One example was they were not to touch a dead body or they would be considered unclean for service at the Mishkan; they would be considered tamai and would need to be ceremonially purified by water mixed with ashes from a red heifer. (This is the reason for the red heifer being in the news where Israel is concerned. It is unnecessary because Messiah has replaced the need for any sacrifice by His own substitutionary death and has become our High Priest, therefore the priesthoods original calling to offer sacrifices for the peoples sin is no longer required.)

Other restrictions included prohibitions regarding the customs of the pagan nations and rules concerning marriage of a kohen/priest. The function of these directives and instructions is twofold:

to promote holiness

and

to keep from profaning the Name of Adonai.

These two are also requirements for any believer, follower and disciple of Messiah today.

Chillul HaShem –Means – desecration of God’s Name.

This is referring to anything that gives our Heavenly Father, the Torah, or the Hebrew people of Israel a bad name or a bad reputation. Some of the Hebrew sages say that Chillul HaShem refers to sinning in such a way as to desecrate the Name of The Lord including murdering someone serving and worshipping other gods or having intimate relationship with a forbidden individual. An Israelite is required to die rather than commit such sins and those who do dishonor the Lord by refusing to give up their lives. This means when faced with the choice of committing one of these sins or being executed, the individual should choose death or else he commits Chillul HaShem. Also if a non Israelite commands an Israelite to commit a sin before the presence of 10 or more of his peers he must also let himself be killed rather than to obey an evil command..

Kiddush HaShem means sanctifying the Name

…which in turn, means that

we honor the Name of the Lord by giving up our lives.

Isn’t that what we do when we ‘give our lives to Jesus/Yeshua?’

It’s therefore the exact opposite of Chillul HaShem. Every time an Israelite recites the Shema, (Deut. 6:4, the individual affirms that they would rather die than to deny the wonderful Name of The Lord. The sages say that if one is about to give up their life for the Lord, he may not think that the Lord God will save him from death in this situation, but must expect to die.

This may explain why in Daniel 3 when Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were faced with Nebuchadnezzar’s fiery furnace; they didn’t presume that the Lord would save them but rather fully expected to give up their lives for the sake of Kiddush HaShem.

So how does this apply to us today? If we read scripture as just old testament History of a nation not our own it has no meaning to us and we will not apply any of the lessons to our lives. We are here to learn to choose righteousness over sin, to discern good over evil, to love the Lord our God with our whole being and others as ourselves we are to preach the good news of the gospel of the kingdom. We are to be spiritual light in the darkness pervading this earthly realm. Our scripture from 1 Peter 2 states that the believer in Messiah Yeshua/Jesus though rejected by men is made part of the living Temple/Sanctuary/Mishkan of the Lord; made part of a holy priesthood, the kedoshim – His Holy Ones in order to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to the Father.

Messiah Jesus/Yeshua is the Rosh Pinnah – the cornerstone. Psalm 118:22. The believer is now chosen by our Heavenly Father to be  – a treasured people- am segulah. We are called out to proclaim the greatness of Him Who delivered us, from darkness of sin and death to the light of truth and everlasting life through His grace and Mercy. Peter finishes by applying Hosea 2:23 directly to the believer.

Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from the desires of the flesh, which war against your soul. 12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles that, though they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.…

Once again, the personal application of the Word of our Heavenly Father to our lives is very clear and here is the condition. IF we want to retain the titles of being a chosen generation and a royal priesthood, then we must abstain from the desires of the flesh, which war against our souls. As His, am segulah- treasured people, our conduct must be exemplary, reflecting all that our beloved Messiah calls us to be. In all this John 15:16 speaks loud and clear He chose us….

and all that He asks of us is the same that He asked of the Levite Kohanim – Loyalty –

This is our calling – the calling of the ecclesia – the called apart ones. John makes it clear and simple in Rev. 12:11. They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. And they did not love their lives so as to shy away from death.

We often refer to loyalty as faithfulness, Ruth is one of many examples.

The loyalty in our Heavenly Fathers covenant that we are part of, assures us of our future in His presence; as we who are His chosen, serve Him as part of the Royal spiritual priesthood. Remembering to be loyal to Him and to the requirements of that calling.

Who Are The Kedoshim?

As we remember Shavuot/Pentecost, the giving of Torah, Covenant, and the giving of Fathers Holy Spirit/ Ruach haKodesh, renewed Covenant; we may ask who are the kedoshim and what are the requirements to be one?

At the time of the first Shavuot, the children of Israel were called to be holy. Leviticus 19:1-2.

This was so they could enter into a relationship with the Holy One of Israel. Lev. 19 focuses on identifying a code of holiness, one that contained guidelines and restrictions regarding practical ethics; more than all the precious portions of the Torah.

In our desire for freedom and a life under grace in modern Christianity, we have neglected the need for personal holiness. Oftentimes we disregard the need for the reverential respect we should be showing towards our Heavenly Father Who is Holy, also to our Messiah Who is Holy and to Ruach HaKodesh, Whose very Name is Holy. If we are to have Him abide in us should we not be a prepared holy vessel?

The disciples counted the Omer from Pesach/Passover to Shavuot/Pentecost, 49/50 days, waiting, preparing themselves to receive the promise. Every year along with every Jewish male they followed the Moedim, especially the ‘shalosh regalim’, the 3 moed to be present in Jerusalem. This year the Joel 2:28-32 prophecy was fulfilled in their sight, the Fathers’ Holy Spirit was poured out on all flesh and Messiahs promise to be with them and us always began and has not diminished.

So what is holiness?

In the Hebrew the word kedushah comes from the root k d sh,

קֹ֫דֶשׁ (qof, dalet, shin) [sounds like k’desh/k’dosh]

The root word kodesh actually means “to consecrate”

and also means:

sanctity or set apartness. Strong’s 6918, 6944)

There are other words in Hebrew that use this root and include kadosh-holy, Kiddush-sanctifying the wine, kaddish-sanctifying the Name, kiddushin-the ring ceremony at a marriage, and so on. Kadosh means the realm of the sacred that is completely separate from all that is sinful and profane.

As noted in Is.59:15 it is elevated, lofty and beyond all comparison and entirely unique, Is. 40:25; entirely righteous, Is. 57:16 and in Psalm 99:3 glorious and awesome. (We have reduced this word awesome to a descriptive term for everyday usage when its root is in holy fearfulness, the sort that men fall face down on the ground and cannot move). Full of light and power, Isaiah 10:7.

Holiness and our Heavenly Father cannot be separated and it is His Name –

The Holy One blessed be He – Ha kadosh barukh hu.

The concept of what is said and meant as holy, is clearly a differentiation in realms. The realm of the holy is completely set apart from the common, the habitual everyday, or the profane. It is unique, awe-inspiring, can be dreadful, terrible, awful, as noted in Ps. 68:35 and Nehemiah 1:5. Our Heavenly Father as the Holy One is completely unique, sacred, distinct, and set apart as the only One of His kind, there is nothing and no one like Him. He alone is to be adored and worthy of true worship because He alone has no equal, no peers; He is without any rivals and His relationship to the world is as its Creator, Lord and King. Only He is eternally and infinitely known to Himself as, I Am That I Am. Ex.3:15.

Holiness by implication is more than an indifferent separation but it’s separation from that which is common, mundane and evil. Holiness implies absolute moral goodness and perfection and it’s impossible that the Holy One could agree with sin because this would destroy the distinction between the profane and the holy and undermine the very nature of holiness itself. That which is Holy, is in direct opposition to the profane and our Father must reject, hate and oppose that which violates the holy and sacred.

In Gen. 1:4, one of the first acts in the creation was the separating of heavenly light from spiritual darkness, suggesting that the realm of the holy which is represented by the divine light, is completely different from the world with its imperfections; however His Holy presence could be seen within the world as long as its integrity was not compromised. For people relating to our Heavenly Father, holiness describes a state of consecration which is achieved by set-apartness, ethical separation from profane culture which is rampant in this fallen world.

For them to be fit for a relationship with God, there were various commandments given through which the children of Israel were sanctified, set apart, to be kadosh-holy.

Because our Father is not just transcendent but is also immanent – that is He fills all of His creation, those who are called into His presence must be holy themselves. This holiness results in sanctification achieved through the obedience to His commandments, which included doing certain things and not doing certain things. There were also decrees given to further separate them from the customs and profanity of the nations that surrounded them. Because the Lord is Holy the Israelites could not be in relationship with Him if they took part on idolatrous and profane practices. They were called to be separate from all that was unholy. Lev. 11:44-45. The call to holiness was based on the fact that they were Gods possession because He had separated them from the nations. Lev. 20:26. We are also called to come apart and be separate because He has saved us out of this worlds systems.

The list includes:

Honoring parents and keeping Shabbat,

ish immo ve’aviv tira’u, ve’et-shabtotal tishmoru. Lev. 19:3.

Honoring the Lord by abstaining from idolatry,

al-tifnu el-ha’elilim, veilohel masekhah lo ta’asu lakhem Lev. 19:4.

Leaving gleanings of your harvest to the poor,

Lo te’khaleh pe’at sadekha

Not cursing others– lo-tekaliel cherish ve’lifnei iver titein mikhshol

and judge them favorably – be’tzedek tishpot amitekha.

Avoid gossip –  lo-telekh rakhil be’ameykha

We must not hate our brother – lo tisna et-achikha bilvavekha

But love him as yourself – ve’ahavta le’re’akha kamokha

as Messiah referred to in Luke 10:29-37.

Although we are redeemed by the Blood of Yeshua/Jesus and His grace and mercy sustains us, we are to keep His commandments; and those just listed are not impossible to do. If you love Me keep my commandments. John 14:15 He did not come to abolish or do away with Torah Matthew 5:17 He came to complete it and show us how to live it correctly without all the human additions and doctrines of demons. Matthew 23:4

This command to be Holy as He is Holy, is not a suggestion, and it’s echoed in 1Peter 1:16 and 1Corinthians 6:19; this is relevant to those who consider themselves redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb, Messiah Yeshua haMashiach. Many are believers and followers, however not many are true disciples. We are without doubt in the end of this age and as spiritual darkness increases and evil is emboldened, we as the light of this world are called to a higher standard. To be a witness of His gospel, our personal testimony and lifestyle must reflect the standards given by the very Savior, Lord and King in Whom we say we believe and trust. We are to be His kedoshim, His Holy ones, to be Holy as He is Holy.

The call to holiness is without compromise and is based on the hope that will be fulfilled at the revealing of Messiah at His second coming. Paul outlines the same moral constraints that mark a separated- called out people of God, the ecclesia. Believers in Messiah are to be free from the sin that saturates the culture around us and in particular free from sexual immorality, which is actually idolatry. We must remember that a believer, a follower, a disciple of Yeshua/Jesus is not exempt from the call to personal holiness, since the Lord God of Israel is the same yesterday, today and forever and He is Holy, Kadosh,

…we are to be Holy- Kadosh,

His Kedoshim.
