Why Did God Say He Loathed Their Sacrifices?

When our Heavenly Father said He loathed their sacrifices concerning the feasts/appointed Times/moedim, and the other requirements, it was not that He despised the ordinances themselves. Why would He? He set them in as the seasons of the annual cycle of life and the prophetic representation of Messiah who would fulfill all the feasts and meanings of them. If Yeshua/Jesus is God the Father in the flesh, He would not, as the Son, change the Fathers ordinances. God, our Heavenly Father does not change His mind, He is not a human; He is Spirit. He perceived that they were performing the sacrifices as an expression of self-righteousness, showing their indifference to the claim that God was in their hearts; and heart motivation is extremely important. Proverbs 21:2,3,4,27.

All His ordinances are good and Holy/ set apart/ in harmony with Himself, but they are to be entered into with deep sincerity and with an honest awareness of their true significance. To sacrifice in carelessness and ignorance will cause damage to our own souls, so we must never allow our spirit to become callous and hardhearted.

Now, is always a good time to check just what is our heart attitude?

The Pharisees and Sadducees were full of themselves, they added laws and ordinances to those given by the Lord. They saw themselves as better than the people, not equal to them; they did not keep a servant hearted attitude and much of what they did was just for show. Look at Yeshua/Jesus’ statement in Luke 11:37 – 44 …Woe to you Pharisees… . it was the same in His day just as at the time referred to in our title, the loathing… pride, arrogance and holier than thou attitude.

They had changed the truth of God to their religious standard for the people, but didn’t keep it themselves. Yeshua/Jesus was hard on this behavior because He knew what He had come to do, as he said in John 17:4. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

His purpose was the Father’s purpose in the process of being fulfilled for 4000 years; which was the redemption of mankind in the fullness of time. No one killed Yeshua/Jesus, no one murdered Him by their choice. The death of Messiah is the fulfillment in history of the very mind and intent of our Heavenly Father. There is no place for seeing Yeshua/Jesus as a martyr. His death was not something that happened to Him, something that might have been prevented. His death was the very specific reason He came, it was His determined purpose.

We must never build our case for forgiveness simply on the thought that God is our Father and He will forgive us just because He loves us; that contradicts the revealed truth of God in Jesus Christ/Yeshua haMashiach; and it makes the cross unnecessary and the redemptive work as nothing.

Our Father God forgives sin only because of the death of Messiah.

A life for a life, because the life is in the blood (Lev 17:11), and He cannot forgive people in any other way than by the death of His Son because of the established covenant. (Abraham and the willingness to offer his son Isaac.)

Hence all of the animal sacrifices and the appointed times which followed until Messiah came. Yeshua/Jesus is exalted as Savior because of His death. We see Jesus/Yeshua in Hebrews 2:9 for the suffering and death crowned with glory and honor. The greatest cry of triumph ever heard in the ears of a shocked universe was that which was released from the cross – it is finished. That is the final word in the redemption of humankind and the fulfillment of the promise in Genesis 1. If the devil had known the fullness of the Fathers plan he wouldn’t have crucified the Lord of Glory. 1Cor. 2:8. This was the hidden mystery of the gospel revealed in His death and resurrection – a whole new being, eternal in nature, unknown until that process was completed/ finished. He was the first born from the dead, both physical and spiritual, no longer separated from the Father.

Anything that lessens, detracts from or completely obliterates the holiness of our Heavenly Father through a false view of His love, contradicts the truth of Him as revealed by Jesus/Yeshua. We view love from a standpoint of a human emotion, a feeling; it’s not the same as the love of our Heavenly Father, His Love is truth. We must never allow ourselves to believe that Jesus/Yeshua stands with us and against the Father out of pity and compassion, or that He became a curse for us out of sympathy for us. Jesus Christ/Yeshua haMashiach, became a curse for us by divine degree, something we often do not fully comprehend. Our part in realizing and understanding the tremendous meaning of the curse which He became is the conviction of sin. Galatians 3:13. Conviction is given to us as a gift, to stir up shame and godly sorrow which leads us to repentance; it’s the great mercy of our Heavenly Father. Jesus/Yeshua hates the sin in people and Calvary’s cross is the measure and extent of His hatred. Ephesians 1:7 in Him we have the forgiveness of sin.

We must be aware of having a too cozy view of the father-hood of God, and our human thinking of Him as ‘daddy’ that we can twist around our little finger; that He is so kind and loving that of course He will forgive us. That thought based solely on emotion, can’t be found anywhere in the New Testament. The only basis on which our Heavenly Father can forgive us, is the incalculable work of what was accomplished on the cross by Messiah. To base our forgiveness on any other ground is unconscious blasphemy and unconscious blasphemy is actually denying Messiah and His victory over sin and death. The only ground on which He can forgive our sin and reinstate us to His presence and favor, is through the cross of Messiah.

There is no other Way, He alone is the Way.

Forgiveness, which is so easy for us to accept, cost the horrendous agony on that cross at Calvary. We should never take the forgiveness of sin, the gift of His Holy Spirit and our sanctification in simple faith, and then forget the enormous cost to Him that made all of this ours for free.

Forgiveness is the divine miracle of His free grace towards us. The cost to the Father was the cross of Messiah. To forgive sin while remaining a Holy God, this is the price that had to be paid. We must never accept a view of the fatherhood of God if it blocks out the atonement because the revealed truth of God is that without the atonement He cannot forgive; He would contradict His nature if He did. The only way we can be forgiven is by being brought back to Him through the atonement of the cross, and His forgiveness is possible only in the supernatural realm. Compared with the miracle of the forgiveness of sin, the experience of sanctification is small, sanctification is simply the wonderful expression or evidence of the forgiveness of sins in a human life. However what awakens the pouring forth of the deepest gratitude in an individual, is that our Heavenly Father has forgiven his or her sin. Paul never got away from this and neither should we. Once we realize all that it costs the Father to forgive each of us, we will be held tight, constrained by the love of God. Luke 11:37 – 44, 45.

Pesach/Passover week may be over but it is the crowning moment in time and eternity and we must not let our remembrance of it be for only once a year. Above all else, we must continue to preach Messiah/Christ and Him crucified, it is the power of God unto salvation....and in His resurrection we can live the new life He died to give us.

His Part, Our Part – His Work, Our Work and 2 Goats?

Gal. 2:21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.

Genesis 4:40 only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you.

The ‘throne of God’ is His presence.

Once His presence was confined

to the mishkan in the wilderness; 

and then transferred to the Temple within the Holy of Holies.

The Temple had a large courtyard where everyone was allowed; here they came to bring, or purchase the birds or animals for the sacrifice required for their sins. The altar of sacrifice was open to, and available for sinners to atone for their sins. The presence, or shekinah of the Lord was not manifested there.

Next was the Inner Court or Holy Place, where the priests could go but not the general public. Here stood the table of showbread containing the bread of the presence, the menorah and the altar of incense. Here when they were cleansed and prepared, the priests were one step closer to the Holy of Holies, where the presence of the Lord resided in the Ark of the Covenant. Only the High Priest could go into the Holy of Holies and he had to be as pure and sinless as possible. Sacrifice had to be made for him and on behalf of the people. He wore special white clothes, no shoes. The only thing he took with Him was the blood of the sacrifice for those sins to be sprinkled on the ark itself; on the mercy seat /the kapporet. This blood paid the price for sin as an atonement by ‘covering’ them..

The container of His glory /presence/ indwelling, was covered in sacrificial blood. After Messiah Jesus died, He became our sacrifice for our sin; His blood paid the price for our sin by not only covering but removing them forever. Gods glory/ shekinah /His Spirit, was no longer confined in the Holy of Holies where only one man could go once a year. The temple curtain separating the place where the ark resided was torn, and the way to the Father was opened for all to come; without a priest performing the sacrifice for us, because Messiah Jesus/Yeshua has done that. He is our High Priest and we can go to His Father through Him. Now His Spirit of Holiness is in the earth and when we accept Jesus/Yeshua as Savior and Messiah, His Spirit /presence/ shekinah, comes to abide/ dwell/ stay/ live and manifest in and through us. We have become not the courtyard in the ‘temple’ where sin is allowed, but the equal of the naos (Greek), the Holy of Holies, the inner sanctuary, the Holy place where His presence can come. A Holy God cannot come where there is sin and it may be why there is so little manifestation of His Holy Spirit in individuals lives today?

Because we are the representation of the Ark of His Covenant, the container of His glory, we have a duty, a calling, an accountability to the Father for the way we control our bodies under His authority. Gal 2:21

This is our part.

We would not put poison into something holy, or abuse that container would we?

Our part is having the power working in us. We must have the power in order for God to work. The cleaner we are, the more the power of His Holy Spirit can flow through us to others.

Paul said he didn’t set aside the grace of God and make it ineffective. God’s grace is absolute and limitless, and the work of salvation through Jesus/Yeshua is complete-  finished forever. Salvation is as eternal as Gods’ throne, however we must put to work, or use what God has placed within us.

To work out our own salvation.

Phil. 2:12 means that we are responsible for using what He has given us. We are responsible for using what He has imparted to us. It also means that we must exhibit, show in our own bodies, the life of the Lord Jesus; not mysteriously or secretly but openly and boldly. We are to discipline our bodies. 1 Cor. 9:27 and bring them into subjection. Every disciple/believer in Jesus/Yeshua can have their bodies under absolute control for the Lord. Our Father has given us the responsibility to rule over all of the temple including the naos/sanctuary, place where His spirit resides. We are the ark today, carriers of His glory, we are the Holy of Holies. 1 Cor 6:19

If we are, then this includes our thoughts and desires; we are responsible for these and we must never give way to improper ones. However, most of us are much more severe in our criticism of others than we are of ourselves. We make excuses for things in ourselves and in our own life while condemning things in the life of others, simply because we are not naturally inclined to do them.

In Rom. 12:1 Paul implored his listeners, and that includes us, to present your bodies a living sacrifice! What we must decide is whether or not we will agree with our Heavenly Father, Lord and King that our bodies will indeed be His sanctuary, His holy of holies, His naos, His ark on the earth. Once we agree with all the rules, regulations and requirements of His commandments; and with the directives for being His disciple, His child, concerning our physical bodies. They are summed up for us in this revealed truth: our body is the Sanctuary – not just the Temple of His Holy Spirit.

This is our part.

 

We are covered in the blood of Messiah, who died for us; we have become the ark of His covenant, sprinkled with the sacrificial blood of His merciful forgiveness. We are no longer sinners in the sense that now we are saved by His grace. Redeemed and sanctified, set apart to good works, no longer ruled by the flesh life.

A life lived in, and ruled by the flesh is no different to the way of the world.

The life we now live by the Son of God is ruled by His Sprit within us. We should show forth this Holy life in our physical bodies, because we are His representatives on earth and it should be one where the life of Christ shines through us representing all the promises of a redeemed life. Gal. 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

This is HIs part and our part together.

Examining further the sacrificial work that was accomplished by Messiah, we need to look at the levitical sacrifice in a deeper way to see the fullness of what our Heavenly Father intends for each of us. Sometimes we just read the new testament without the foundation of the old and miss that deeper truth. The one day of the year the High Priest went into the Holy of Holies was on the day of atonement/ Yom Kippur.

When he offered the sacrifice of the bull for his own sins and then took 2 goats to the door of the temple to deal with the sins of the nation. There is no atonement for sin without a blood sacrifice. A life for a a life, Ex. 21:23; and the life is in the blood.

Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make …  atonement for yourselves on … altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life

Hence Jesus/Yeshuas sacrificial death and blood was for our redemption. This is how He fulfilled all things of the law and it is important for us to know.

Regarding the 2 goats: there was a lottery, a casting of lots where one of the goats was chosen and was called the Lords goat, and offered as a sacrifice and its blood was sprinkled on the mercy seat in the holy of holies.

Leviticus 16:8 After Aaron casts lots for the two goats, one for the LORD and the other for the …

… He is to cast lots for the two goats- one lot … the LORD and the other for the scapegoat. He is to … sacred lots to determine which goat will be reserved as an offering .

This was a type and shadow of Yeshua HaMashiach, Messiah Jesus.

This was His work.

This goats blood was to deal with the forgiveness of sins, the atonement for sins. The other goat was set free to wander off into the wilderness as an outcast. The Jewish records show that the goat was thrown off a cliff. This was the scapegoat, a familiar phrase called in Hebrew: the Azezel, or azazel, who was to deal with the guilt we feel for our sins. Being thrown off a cliff would fit the metaphor, because guilt will lead us to destruction. In other words even when God forgives our sins we could still live with regret. That was the purpose of the azazel or scapegoat.

We see that Jesus/Yehsua not only was the Lord’s goat who was sacrificed for our sins, but He was also our scapegoat who took the burden of our sins, our feelings of guilt, remorse and shame; and sent them into the wilderness to be an outcast to never be seen again, or thrown off a cliff, to bring this guilt to an end. No wonder He cried it is finished/completed!

Our Father knows us and that we are prone to not forgive ourselves; that we often harbor deep grief and sorrow; and listen to the lies of the enemy that what we have done is too bad to be forgiven and forgotten, that we are beyond redemption. This is a trap and a lie of the enemy/ adversary, because Jesus/Yeshua has done it all. We are to take all of our wicked ways and place them on the Redeemer, Who will not only make atonement for our wickedness; but will also remove the guilt that comes with it.

Many times we forget there is the

Lords goat and the scapegoat,

and sometimes we do not completely azazel/forsake our wicked ways. Is. 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the LORD, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.

In Strongs H5800 The word Forsake in Hebrew is

azab/ aw-zab

עָזַב

and comes from the root word azov.

Meaning: to depart, leave behind, neglect, to loosen 

and one Hebrew school of thought suggests the root could be

azoll – אזול

which is the same root word that the Hebrew word azazel for the scapegoat comes from:

Strong’s Hebrew: 5799. עֲזָאזֵל azazel

 

We may accept the sacrifice of the Lords goat, but if we spend our lives living in the guilt of our sins, we have not accepted the azazel or the work that Messiah did as a scapegoat..

This is His work and we need to realize once and for all that He also took the guilt and shame of our sins and sending them away into the wilderness or over a cliff.

Sometimes we will not accept the azazel reality of others, who truly repent and receive the truth of the Lords goat. We keep searching for the azazel, and keep hanging the past sins of that person over their head.

Sometimes we have to allow our Heavenly Father to send that scapegoat into the wilderness or over a cliff, never to return and also forgive them and ourselves.

Our part is to yield to His creative work in us, not resisting, nor trying to speed it up. We are being transformed from the inside out. Allow Him to set the pace and the timing. Our part is to decide to build a relationship with Him through prayer, worship, spending time in His presence, reading, studying His Word and being obedient to what He has asked us to do in order to become His disciple.

In John 6:28-35 His disciples/talmidim ask Yeshua/Jesus

28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. 30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? 31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert 32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.” 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

We know that Messiah has done it all however, He wants us to do our part and apply His Truth and His Ways to our lives by eating/word and drinking/spirit of Him. This is working out our salvation and displaying His Work in and through us to the lost who are seeking answers, because He is the Way the Truth and the Life. His work is feeding us manna, Himself the bread from heaven, the bread of life/chaim. 

Then our work is His work, our part is His part and we become the fulfillment of Messiahs prayer in John 17:20-23.20 

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one- 23 I in them and you in me-so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

Day of Atonement – Yom HaKippurim

Known in English as the

Day of Atonement,

Yom HaKippurim

יום כפור

It occurs 9 days after

Yom Teruah/The Feast of Trumpets/Day of Blowing.

It is celebrated on the 10th day of the 7th month in the Hebrew calendar.

(5th October 2022).

It was given originally to the sons of Israel/Yisra’El.

“Speak to the children of Yisra’El, saying, ‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you have a rest, a remembrance of Teru‛ah,” Wayyiqra/Leviticus 23:24

The Annual Moedim/Appointed Times of the Lord

were set in by our Heavenly Father to remind us of His Plan and Purpose for our lives now and eternally. The very same God Who granted favor and mercy to all humanity by sending the Messiah, Jesus/Yeshua, to die for our redemption; will also send Him again to destroy His enemies and to separate the wheat from the tares, the sheep from the goats, and to provide the ultimate atonement/redemption for those who are His.

When you see all these things begin to come to pass look up for your redemption draws near. Luke 21:28

What does His Word tell us about this Kadosh/Holy/set-apart day?

Are there things that we are supposed to do and see and hear?

In studying the Scriptures about Yom HaKippurim / Day of Atonement, we could pray in the words of King David: Heavenly Father, please “open our eyes that we might behold wonderful things from your Torah” and see our returning Messiah Jesus/Yeshua in this moed/appointed Day.

Gods’ Word was given to us to speak of Him and we should seek to hear its’ voice… His voice… especially during His appointed times/moedim.

What Does Scripture Say About Yom HaKippurim?

Yom HaKippurim

יום כּףּר,

Strong’s #3117 + #3725

means

“day [of] atonement”.

Atonement

is the Hebrew word kippur

and it comes from the word

kaphar

which means:

“to cover”.

The blood of atonement was used to cover and cleanse the spiritual uncleanness of the children of Israel/ Yisra’El.

Hebrews 10:4 tells us that the blood of bulls and goats will not take away sins. However there are numerous passages in the Torah, which tell us that the blood of bulls and goats will make atonement or temporary covering.

“For it is impossible for blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” Ibrim/Hebrews 10:4

In reality we know that the

Atoning Blood of Messiah has covered and cleansed us.

He is our atoning sacrifice.

Wayyiqra/Leviticus 16:1-34 tells us of the casting of lots for the “scapegoat”

The word translated as “scapegoat”

In Strong’s #5799

is the Hebrew word:

עזאזל

azazel.

This word is only used to describe the “scapegoat” in Leviticus 16.

There is some debate among scholars about the literal meaning of the word.

 

The Brown-Driver-Briggs Lexicon translates it as:

“for absolute removal”.

Strong’s translates it as “goat of departure”.

The NAS Concordance translating it as “entire removal”.

The Septuagint, an early Greek translation of the Old Testament,

took the Hebrew as;

ez ozel [“the goat that departs”]

and translated it as:

tragos apopompaios [“goat sent out”].

This translation was used by the Latin Vulgate, which rendered the word as:

caper emissarius, or “emissary goat”.

William Tyndale rendered the Latin as

“(e)scape goat”

in his 1530 Bible and his translation was later used by the authors of the KJV 1611.

We know that bulls and goats cannot remove sin (Hebrews 10:4) we now understand the purpose of the “scapegoat” was to somehow take the uncleanness associated with sin away from the camp. The person who releases the goat then had to bathe to remove the “stain” of being in contact with the goat.

According to Leviticus 16:29-31 and 23:27

It is a day to “humble your souls”

Heb: ועניתם את נפשׁתיכם

v’initem et napheshoteykhem

Some translations treat this as

“afflict your souls [nephesh]”.

If anyone does not humble himself on this day that person shall be cut off from among his people. Leviticus 23:29.

It is an extremely serious penalty to be cut off from Israel/Yisra’El so we should make an effort to understand what is meant by

“humbling our souls”.

There are two passages in the Tanakh/Old Testament, that use the same words. The first comes from the Psalms where David said:

Malicious witnesses rise up; They ask me of things that I do not know. They repay me evil for good, To the bereavement of my soul. But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fasting, And my prayer kept returning to my bosom. I went about as though it were my friend or brother; I bowed down mourning, as one who sorrows for a mother. Tehillim/Psalm 35:11-14

The 2nd is from Isaiah:

‘Why have we fasted and You do not see? Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not notice?’ Behold, on the day of your fast you find your desire, And drive hard all your workers. Behold, you fast for contention and strife and to strike with a wicked fist. You do not fast like you do today to make your voice heard on high. Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to humble himself? Is it for bowing one’s head like a reed And for spreading out sackcloth and ashes as a bed? Will you call this a fast, even an acceptable day to the Lord? Yeshayahu/Isaiah 58:3-5.

Yom HaKippurim/Day of Atonement

“Therefore, since we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, יהושע the Son of Elohim, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who was tried in all respects as we are, apart from sin. Therefore, let us come boldly to the throne of favour, in order to receive compassion, and find favour for timely help.” Ibrim/Hebrews 4:14-16

He is the One Who “stands in readiness” to

lead away our uncleanness

with the scapegoat, the goat of removal.

He is the scapegoat that will

bear our sins and take them away

“For Messiah has not entered into a set-apart place made by hand – figures of the true – but into the heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of Elohim on our behalf, not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters into the set-apart place year by year with blood not his own. For if so, He would have had to suffer often, since the foundation of the world. But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the offering of Himself. And as it awaits men to die once, and after this the judgment, so also the Messiah, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time, apart from sin, to those waiting for Him, unto deliverance.” Ibrim/Hebrews 9:24-28

The self sacrifice that is necessary to atone for our sins is so far beyond what any of us is willing or able to do. It would take every single drop of our own blood to cover our own sins let alone for anothers’. Yet what purpose would this serve if we lost our lives in the process? The justice required by the Lord might be satisfied but His mercy and grace would not be fulfilled.

This Holiest of days in our Fathers Appointed Times/Moedim, is when the haCohen haGadol/the High Priest has to perform the sacrificial offering; to make atonement for the sins of the people through the shedding of innocent blood.

Hebrews 9:6-15

6But The Priests were always entering the outer Tabernacle and performing their ministry, 7But The High Priest would enter the inner Tabernacle once a year by himself with blood, which he was offering in the place of his soul and in the place of the evil doing of the people. 8But by this The Spirit of Holiness had taught that the way of holiness had not yet been revealed, as long as the first Tabernacle was standing.9And this was a symbol for that time in which gifts and sacrifices were offered, which were not able to perfect the conscience of him who offers them, 10Except in food and drink only, and in various washings, which are ordinances of the flesh that are established until the time of reformation.

11But The Messiah who has come has become The High Priest of the good things that he did, and he entered The Great and Perfect Tabernacle which is not made with hands, and was not from these created things. 12And he did not enter with blood of yearling goats and of calves, but with his own blood he entered the holy place one time and has achieved eternal redemption. 13For if the blood of kids and of calves and the ashes of a heifer were sprinkled on those who were defiled and it sanctified them for the purifying of their flesh, 14How much more therefore, will the blood of The Messiah, who by The Eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works that we may serve THE LIVING GOD?

15Because of this, he is The Mediator of The New Covenant, for in his death he is salvation to those who violated The First Covenant, that we, those who were called to eternal inheritance, would receive The Promise. 

However much blood is in that sacrifice …it will eventually stop flowing and it will therefore never be enough.

The ONLY ONE Who can sympathize with our weaknesses yet is apart from sin (4:15) is Messiah Yeshua/Jesus and…. HE has come. As haCohen haGadol of the coming good things, He alone could enter the greater and more perfect tabernacle… neither through the blood of goats and calves but through His own innocent blood.

Atonement has been made

and Messiah has obtained age enduring redemption for us. When John declared in 1:29  Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! We know now this prophetic statement was completed 2000+ years ago.

Justice is satisfied and mercy fulfilled …once and for all…. The blood, His blood its everywhere and it’s alive.. not drying up, or running out… because, in Messiah there will always be enough. HalleluYah!

Dear Heavenly Father we humble ourselves before you as we think on this Holy time. Denying ourselves because You once denied Yourself for us. We bless your Name with a thankful heart for you have done for us what we could never do for ourselves. Our Father God, Lord, King, our Savior and Redeemer, we worship You and bow down before You in humility; by ourselves we are nothing but in You and in You alone we have everything because You are more than enough….

Pesach Emunah For His Am Segulah? Part 2

 

In the last post we looked at the questions..

We saw that we are His

Am Segulah

but what of the

Pesach  Emunah?

Pesach or Passover

is all about Sacrifice

 and here we will continue to look at the sacrifices required by our Heavenly Father prior to Him sending Messiah Jesus/Yeshua to become the perfect sacrificial substitute for us; which is what we remember at this season of Pesach/Passover..

and we are looking at how it is connected to Messiah in

 the directions given to Moses recorded in Leviticus

in the Old Testament/Covenant.

The five offerings were:

1 Burnt.

2 Grain.

3 Peace. 4 Sin. 5.Trespass/guilt.

1, 2, and 3 were voluntary offerings

4 and 5 were obligatory offerings.

Previously we looked at the

Burnt Offering

and the Minchah

or Grain Offering.

 

Next is the

3  Shelamim – Peace offering.

Leviticus 3; 7.11–34

The third offering is the shelem, or Peace Offering.

zevah shelamim or Peace Offering.

זֶבַח הַשְּׁלָמִים zevah hashelamiym

The term

korban shelamim (קורבן שלמים)

is also used.

Note the word shelem

שֶׁלֶם

close to shalom,

שלום

meaning peace,

with which we are familiar.

Shelmim is the plural

recall the posts looking at the meaning of the added

IM ending to Hebrew words.

shelem: a sacrifice for alliance or friendship, peace offering.

shelem: to be complete .

Strong’s Hebrew: 5071 נדבה (ndabah) – freewill offering …

Strong’s Hebrew: 4503. מִנְחָה (minchah) — a gift, tribute …

gift, oblation, meat offering, present, sacrifice. From an unused root meaning to apportion.

The shelmim, first discussed in Leviticus 3, included:

Thanksgiving Offerings. Lev 7:12,

Freewill Offerings. 7:16,

and

Wave Offerings. 7:30.

The offering could be cattle 3:1, sheep 3:7, or a goat 3:12.

It could be male or female, but must be without defect.

If it was a Thanksgiving Offering,

it could also include a variety of breads 7:12.

The purpose of the Peace Offering was to consecrate a meal between two or more parties before YHVH/God and share that meal together in fellowship of peace and a commitment to each others’ future prosperity. The portions unsuitable for eating were given to God, 7:19-27. Depending on the type of Peace Offering, the breast may have been given to the High Priest, 7:31 and the right thigh may be given to the priest officiating the meal, 7:32. The rest of the meal was to be eaten within one day by the fellowship of parties, 7:16, and the leftovers were to be burnt after two days, 7:17.

This was a free will offering eaten by the one bringing it and given as a way of expressing thanks to God on joyous occasions. Semikhah is performed though instead of viduy; and praise to the Lord is offered.

The Peace offering signified fellowship with God and reconciliation. In this sacrifice both the one bringing the offering and the priest ate of the freewill/voluntary offering.

Peace Offering – Leviticus 3:1-17; 7:11-34

It was a sweet aroma to YHVH/God.

It provided a communal meal with meat for the priests and those giving the offering.

Three types:

thanksgiving,

vow offering and

voluntary (free will) offering.

The meaning for us:

We are to thank Our Heavenly Father – blessing Him for all His provision in our lives, spiritually and physically.

The fulfillment in Messiah Yeshua:

He is our peace/shalom offering.

We can be reconciled to God/YHVH/Our Heavenly Father

only through Him.

Yehoveh Shalom.

He is our Shelamim

He is our

sar shalom our prince of peace

He said My Peace/shalom I give to you.

John 14:27

Shalom alechheim!

4  chatat/chattath – sin offering.

The fourth offering was called:

chattath, literally: sin or sin offering…. 

Purification (Sin) Offering.

Though often called the sin offering,

a better translation is purification offering.

This offering is sometimes seen as an

offering of atonement for unintentional sin; Lev. 4:2-3, 4:20.

In the same way it is sometimes viewed as guilt offering,

removing the consequences for lack of perfection

Lev. 4:13-14, 4:22-23.

As an atonement offering, it contained elements of a

Burnt Offering 4:25, yet at the same time had elements of a

Peace Offering 4:26.

Conversely, some of the sins for which one needed

atonement were not moral sins

but rather matters of ritual impurity 5:1-5.

The primary purpose of this offering is not to atone for sins but rather to: purify oneself for re-entering the presence of God. The elements of a Purification Offering could be any of the elements of the previous three types of offerings, though unlike the Peace Offering, the meal was not to be shared by the one offering the sacrifice.

Note that there is no exact sacrifice for deliberate intentional and willful sins against the Lord…

but instead, the punishment was by early death.

Sin Offering

chatat/chattath

– Leviticus 4:1-35; 6:24-30.

This offering was not considered a sweet aroma to YHVH/God. Only the fat and blood were offered on the altar; when the

sin offering/chatat/chattath

is for the whole congregation, the rest was

burned outside the camp.

The meaning for us:

All have sinned,

the penalty of sin is death

and sin requires the shedding of blood

Hebrews 1:3-4; Galatians 2:20; Romans 5:8-9.

The fulfillment in Messiah Yeshua:

Messiah Yeshua/Jesus is our sin offering.

We are sinful, and

He was willing to pay our death penalty for us.

He was crucified outside the city.

 

5  Asham – guilt offering

Unlike the English word guilt,

this does not refer to a matter of one’s conscience

but rather to something one owes on account of a sin.

Other names of this offering are the:

Trespass Offering or the Reparation Offering.

this was a required offering as part of the reparations for certain improper acts;

e.g. keeping another’s property by swearing falsely.

In each case the wrongdoer was required to restore the property plus an additional 20% to its rightful owner before he could offer the sacrifice and receive forgiveness.

Leviticus 5:14–6:7; 7:1-7

The

Trespass Offering

is similar to the sin offering, but dealing with specific sins, especially where restitution was possible.

The meaning for us:

We must repent each time we sin.

The rules of restitution teach us to do our best

to repair the damage caused by our sins.

To put things right.

The fulfillment in 

Messiah Yeshua/Jesus:

Who died so that every sin can be

forgiven and covered! 

Hallelujah!

 

Note that the sin offerings, chatat and asham,

were obligatory for atonement to be made.

They had to be offered by the anointed High Priest who would sprinkle the blood of the sacrifice seven times inside the Mishkan on the Golden altar opposite the curtain before the Holy of Holies. That fat was burned on the altar but unlike the other offerings, the rest of the animal its’ hide flesh and its’ body parts would be taken outside the camp to be burned with fire. Hebrews 13:12

A Jewish commentary states that the meat of the korbanot never spoiled even if it took days before it was burned upon the altar; and in spite of the presence of blood all over the Mishkan no flies swarmed the area because of its special holiness.

After the Messiah Yeshua had come as the

high priest/ha kohen ha gadol

of the re-new-ed covenant;

the sacrificial system was abandoned following the destruction of the 2nd temple in the year 70 A.D.

Even so, the instructions in the book of Leviticus continue to this day to exert influence on Jewish life, since nearly half of 613 Commandments are found in it and much of their Talmud is based on it.

The sacrificial system of the Old Testament was a means of

GRACE

by which the relationship

between YHVH/God and humanity

begins to be restored.

Ultimately, the sacrificial system was inadequate, and

none could repay the debt of life that was owed

until

Jesus Christ/Messiah Yeshua

defeated death once and for all.

Heb. 10:10.

Today, we live in the light of His perfect sacrifice for us

while also offering our own lives

as a

living and

holy sacrifice.

Romans 12:1; 1 Pet. 2:5.

New Testament/Covenant

brit chadashah.

The references in the brit chadashah

New Testament/Covenant,

concern the superiority of the sacrifice

of the Messiah/mashiach as

the once for all sacrifice for sins.

Instead of daily sacrifices and offerings, the Messiah came to fulfill the will of His and our Father God/YHVH, by becoming obedient to all that the Levitical Law required. He did this by offering Himself as the ultimate sacrificial victim truly without spot or blemish.

When He said

you have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings.

These are offerings according to the Torah then He added

behold I have come to do your will.

He abolishes the first in order to establish the second.

And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering

of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Hebrews 10:8

Moreover just as the blood of the sin offering was brought into the holy place by the anointed priest

so Jesus/yeshua presented his own blood in the holy place made without hands and then suffered outside the camp.

Hebrews 13:10 – 15

One of the roles of our Mashiach/ Messiah is that of the

High Priests, who offered

true atonement for our sins

by offering his own blood in the

holy of holies made without hands

In Hebrews 3:1 -2.

The importance of a blood sacrifice

Leviticus 17:11

Ki nefeshha-basar badam hi va ani netativ lakhem al-hamizbe’ach le khaper al-nafshotekhem ki-hadam hu banefesh ye’khaper.

The Lord requires a

blood sacrifice for

the issue of

sin.

Leviticus 17:11 agrees with the teaching in the

New Testament/brit chadashah.

in Hebrews 9 :22

Without the shedding of blood

there is NO remission

there is NO atonement without blood;

the substitutionary shedding of blood –

the life for life principle

is essential

to the true at one ment with the Lord God.

Jesus/Yeshua offered His own body up

to be the perfect sacrifice for sins.

By His shed blood we have complete atonement before Adonai/YHVH/Our Heavenly Father.

The Levitical system of the animals sacrifices including the elaborate Yom Kippur ritual, was meant to

foreshadow the truth

and abiding sacrifice of Yeshua/Jesus

as the means of reconciliation with the Father.

The old covenant /the brit yeshanah provides a shadow of the substance revealed in the new covenant/brit chadashah.

If the old covenant had been sufficient to provide a permanent solution to the problem of our sin; then there would never have been a need for a new covenant to supersede it.

Hebrews 8:7.

Unlike the old covenant sacrifices which merely covered sins – under the new covenant, the sins are taken entirely away.

Hebrews 7:27 9:12 9:25–28 

There is no more need for continual sacrifices since Yeshua/Jesus provided the once and for all sacrifice for all of our sins.

Hebrews 9:11-14; 9:24–28; 10:11–20.

Jesus/Yeshua, the Jewish Messiah, is

the propitiation/expiation/answer for our sins.

The Greek word used in

Romans 3:25; 1John 2:2; 1John 4:10.

hilasterion

is the same word used in the Greek translation

of the Old Testament for the Mercy seat.

or

kapporet/cover of the arc of the covenant in the Holy of Holies

which was sprinkled with the blood of the sacrifice on Yom Kippur.

Hebrews 9:24

We need to be sure we have personally made

semikhah by

laying hands on Yeshua/Jesus

as our sacrifice for sins.

Have we made confession/viduy?

All have the need for deliverance from bondage through Him, which takes us back to the Israelites deliverance from Egyptian bondage.

This is the

faith/emunah

we need for

our personal

PassOver/Pesach,

to be His

treasured people/am segulah. 

Without the full understanding of what has been done for us how can we appreciate the sacrifice?

This lack of understanding cripples the believer today from fully submitting to a risen savior, and also robs us of the fullness of the amazing miracle of the chaim/lifes that’s been made freely available to us. 

Yes FREE to us

BUT

it cost Jesus/Yeshua EVERYTHING!

The priesthood that stood between worshiper and God has ceased. Hebrews 7:23–24, The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever.

This is the foundation for our faith in Him –

This is the gospel… the good news.

Yeshua/Jesus knew that He was destined to fulfill all that the Jewish prophets said about Him. He had eaten the Passover Pesach meal every year and this year He said in

Luke 22:15, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before My suffering. 

As He was nearing His death,

He commented to His twelve

disciples/talmidim /tahl-me-DEEM,

Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished. For He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again. Luke 18:31-33.

 This prophecy in

Isaiah 53 does speak specifically of the Messiah Jesus/Yeshua: His death and resurrection are graphically portrayed in this prophecy where the meaning of His death, as a substitutionary atonement, is given. It was written over 700 years before Messiah was born, but the prophet accurately details His suffering and death by crucifixion as the Suffering Servant of the Lord.

He acknowledged this Himself at His last Passover Seder with His talmidim. Luke 22:37.

The sacrifice of Jesus Christ/Yeshua HaMashiach had fulfilled ALL the requirements of the Law for the sin offerings that were made at the Temple.
He also explained that, as the Law required, Yeshua/Jesus died outside the gates of the city: We have an altar from which those who are serving the present earthly tabernacle do not have authority to eat; for pertaining to those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest for a sin offering, the bodies of all these are burned outside the camp. For this reason, Jesus, in order that He might sanctify the people by His own blood, also suffered OUTSIDE THE GATE. Heb. 13:10-12.

The fact that Messiah Jesus/Yeshua

died outside the gates of the city of Jerusalem

verifies that

His body was a sin offering.

The Law of God specifically commanded that

all sin offerings were to be burned

outside the camp.

Lev. 4:1-2, 11-12, 21; 16:27.

After the blood of the sacrificial animals was sprinkled on the altar, the bodies of the sin offerings were taken across the Kidron Valley to a place high on the Mount of Olives east of the city of Jerusalem, where there was a special altar called the

Miphkad Altar.

This altar was located near Golgotha, where Messiah was crucified.

The Miphkad Altar and the sin offerings

which were sacrificed on it was really

a cardinal part of the Temple complex

that existed in the time of Messiah.

This altar was not one with a ramp leading up to a square elevated area, but it is described in the Mishnah as a pit in which the animals could be burnt to ashes (Parah 4:2).

The Miphkad Altar was located outside the walls of the Temple (as Ezekiel 43:21 states), but [the bridge across the Kidron Valley and] the roadway leading up to the altar (and including the altar itself) were part of the ritualistic furniture associated with the Temple services….

Messiah/Christ was crucified near the Miphkad Altar!

The location of this altar on the Mount of Olives

offered a direct view

of the entire Temple area.

On the Day of Atonement, those who stood at the site of this special altar could observe the high priest as he was standing near the veil of the Temple, ready to enter the Holy Place. That day they would have seen the veil tear from top to bottom and felt the earth quake!!

Even the bullock and the goat which were sacrificed on the day of Atonement (Leviticus 16) had to be killed near the Altar of Burnt Offering within the Temple and then their carcasses were required to be taken out the eastern gate to the Miphkad Altar at the Mount of Olives and there they were burnt to ashes (Leviticus 4). 
The ashes of all the animals that were burned on the altar at the Temple were taken to the same place where the sin offerings were burned (Miphkad Altar) and were mingled with the ashes of the sin offerings and poured out at the base of the Altar, Leviticus 4:12, 21; 6:11 where the ashes could descend through a conduit system into the Valley of Kidron below.

As the supreme sin offering of God the Father, the body of Jesus Christ/Yeshua HaMashiach, was offered up when He was crucified on the Mount of Olives, near the altar where the bodies of all sin offerings from the Temple were offered up to God.

Thus, Paul wrote: But He, after offering one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down at the right hand of God. Since that time, He is waiting until His enemies are placed as a footstool for His feet. For by one offering He has obtained eternal perfection for those who are sanctified. Heb. 10:12-14.

As the

Lamb of God,

Yeshua HaMashiach/Jesus Christ

was sacrificed on the Pesach/Passover day,

Nisan 14/April 5, 30 AD.

The 14th Nisan is the night when the children ask,

Why is this night different

from all other nights?

The apostle Paul affirms that His death fulfilled the sacrifice of the Passover lamb:

For Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us. I Cor. 5:7.  according to the Old Testament requirements of the law.

The noun

πασχα pascha

means:

Passover,

the feast that celebrates the Exodus of Israel out of Egypt, and which in the Christian era became associated with the resurrection of the Messiah/Christ, and is now celebrated and more commonly known by the name Easter – which is the name of the pagan fertility goddess ishtar and has nothing to do with Jesus/Yeshua.

Although the noun

πασχα – pascha looks like it comes from the verb

πασχω – pascho, meaning: to experience things, technically,

the noun πασχα – pascha is a transliteration of the Hebrew noun פסח – pasah, meaning Passover,

but where in Greek/English, the verb connections seem obvious, a passing over, the Hebrew noun comes from a very distinct word:

The Hebrew verb  פסח  pasah means:

to have a shortage,

and that shortage may lead to:

an impaired mobility,

an intense desire,

or a debilitating indecisiveness.

The derived adjective

פסח piseah

is the common word for:

lame or cripple,

which means that every time

Yeshua/Jesus heals a lame person in the gospels,

there a bit of

פֶסַח /Passover/Pesach happening!!! wow!

The common Hebrew verb that means:

to be blind

is based on a verb that means:

to have too much;

namely skin where it shouldn’t be, in this case over the eyes.

Here we better understand the proverbial link between

the lame and the blind 

because it generally describes:

everybody burdened by

not having enough of something – the lame,

and

everybody burdened by

having too much of something – the blind.

Here we must acknowledge that all humans are

born lame and most die blind!!

The verb פסח – pasah, is associated with:

being child-like and immature,

whereas the words that describe blindness are associated with: being too mature and cold of heart.

Pesach emunah – Passover faith….

have we got Passover faith?

Have we got the faith that the death angel will

Passover us too?

If we do it is because of

the Blood of the Passover Lamb

that we have applied to our lives

by faith.
