Days of Noah vs. Lot & Today.

Solomon had great wisdom and insight he said :

Everything that happens has happened before;

nothing is new,

nothing under the sun.

In Ecclesiastes 1:9-11 he wrote:

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. 10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

Taking this together with what Messiah Yeshua/Jesus told us confirming this fact in Matthew 24 and Luke 17:26—37 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark…. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; 29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom.

Yeshua/Jesus said that the days of Noah and Lot would be like the days just prior to His return and the establishment of His Kingdom.

We hear this referred to many times and even more lately in light of recent events… wars and rumors of wars…

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

Matthew 24:6-8

This certainly sounds like things that are happening right now….

Maybe we should take another look at what the days of Noah and those of Lot were really like and compare them? It may give us more of an indication if our days are similar to theirs.

We are told that most people will be going about their normal activities, unaware of the times. When He returns, society will be degenerate and wicked, just as it was before the Flood came.

In the days of Noah and the days of Lot, only one family was protected. Yeshua/Jesus compared both to the End Times, so the same will be true just before His return.

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart.

The Hebrew phrase,

acharit ha-yamim – אַחֲרִית הַיָּמִים

often translated,

“latter days”

refers to the “end of days, or “last days”,

mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments, and points to a critical period late in human history.

The Greek phrase “in the last days”

ἐν ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις

also refers to the prophesied “End of Days,”.

Strong’s Hebrew: 319.

אַחֲרִית (acharith)

— the after-part, end

The Lord God told Noah and Abraham for Lot, that judgement was at hand. Yeshua/Jesus was telling us that it will be the same just before His return.

Here are some similarities and differences between the two events, as we read them, how many are in evident in the world today?

In the days of Noah wickedness was universal.

In Lots’ days wickedness was universal and we read of the five cities that God destroyed.

The events before the destruction, Noah built the ark and preached righteousness not allowing the wickedness to affect his family.

Whereas Lot moved into the wicked city of Sodom and the evil of the city vexed his righteous soul. Lot offered to give his daughters to the wicked men of the city.

God Himself brought the judgment on the wicked. Genesis 6:13.

God Himself brought the judgment on the wicked. Genesis 19:23.

Noah saw the violence that existed during this time but no violence was committed against him.

Lot saw the violence that existed during his time and experienced violence against him from the homosexual men of Gomorrah.

Regarding Family: Noah’s sons married wives who became righteous removing themselves from the wicked society.

Lots daughters were betrothed to wicked men these men were destroyed in the wicked society.

Noah and his sons and their wives were in unity in their beliefs and their work on the ark. They stood together against those who were wicked in that generation.

Lot and his family had no family unity. His sons were not even in contact with him. His daughters were influenced by the wickedness of Sodom and his wife turned back and was destroyed.

The judgment in Noah’s time lasted many days. Genesis 1:11, 8:14.

The judgment and lots times lasted only part of the day. Genesis 19:23-27.

The judgment of the flood even included the highest mountains.

The judgment on Lot’s time was only in the valleys.

Noah brought living animals out of the judgment.

No animals were saved in the location of the judgment in Lots time.

God caused His Spirit to pass over the waters to cause the waters to subside. Genesis 8:1.

There is no mention of Spirit in the destruction in Lots time.

Noah did not know that judgment was over until God told him to leave the ark.

Lot did not know when the judgment was over and he feared that there was more to come so he fled to a cave even though judgment had ended.

Noah was not vexed by evil, he found grace in the eyes of God. Genesis 6:9. God said that Noah was a righteous man in the midst of an evil generation. It does not say that Noah was vexed by their unrighteous deeds. Righteousness is defined as keeping the Commandments of God in other words keeping Torah.

Lot was vexed by evil and apparently he had not told his family to keep the way of Torah according to 2Peter 2:8. He lived in Sodom one of the five cities that were destroyed.

Noah was told to gather food for himself and the animals.

Lot was not told to gather food.

Noah knew of the coming judgment he had been told by God that the earth was going to be destroyed by a flood 100 years before it happened. Genesis 6:13. After the ark was built, God told Noah that the flood was going to start in seven days. Genesis 7:4 There was no panic just simple obedience to God’s command.

Lot did not know of the coming judgment that God was going to bring on the city until the angels came to take them out of it. Abraham knew of the coming judgment because he commanded his children to follow the ways of God, however he interceded for the righteous in the cities that were to be destroyed.

Noah did all that God told him.

Lot argued with the angels about where he was to escape to. Genesis 19:18.

Noah and his sons worked for 100 years to prepare for the time of judgment.

Neither Lot nor his family worked to prepare for the coming judgment.

Noah was warned directly by God.

Angels brought the warning to Lot.

Noah was given specific plans

Lot was not given specific plans.

Noah was told that the judgment was on the whole world.

Lot was not told that the judgment was only on the five cities so he may have believed that it was on the whole world.

Noah was called a preacher of righteousness; and He preached repentance for 100 years to all who came to mock him for building the ark.

Lot had spoken little about righteousness as we can see by the reaction of those who wanted him to bring out the angels. Genesis 19:9.

As a preacher of righteousness, Noah and his family were known to be in opposition to the accepted way of life in his time, they did not fit in.

Lot and his family were well known in Sodom. Although he did not accept the life style of Sodom, he was not known to be in opposition to it until he objected his last night there. He also offered to give his daughters, something that Noah would have never done. Lot had lived in Sodom without affecting it for good. He and his family had fitted into life as usual there, he sat at the city gates which was a sign of a leader of the city. Genesis 19:1.

Sexual wickedness was rampant before the destruction, in the form of multiple wives one for pleasure and one for reproduction. This custom had started with Lamech and had progressed to rape and seduction. This was perpetrated by the sons of the rulers who took women by force, leaving children who never knew their father. When these children grew up they brought an increase in the violence in the world. Genesis 6:1-5.

Sexual wickedness before the destruction of Sodom had increased greatly in all the five cities. Homosexual men forced themselves on all strangers who had the misfortune to enter the city. Genesis 19:5.

Noah had a very close relationship with the Lord God and did not need anyone to intercede for him.

Lot may not have been saved if Abraham had did not interceded for him. Genesis 19:29.

The door was shut by God in Genesis 7:16.

The door was shut by angels in Genesis 19:10.

All of Noah’s family were saved because they obeyed God, however, none of the world was saved because they did not obey him. All of mankind are descendants of Noah and his sons after the flood.

Lot’s sons-in-law would not leave the city so they were destroyed. Lot’s wife disobeyed the angels instructions and she was destroyed. The men of the cities were destroyed because of their unrighteous deeds. Lot and his two daughters were saved by obeying although they did argue with the angels.

Conditions at the time of deliverance: Noah and his family walked onto the ark on the day the rain came. There was no panic or confusion, just obedience to God’s commands even though the earth was covered in violence/hamas.

With Lot and his family, there was panic and confusion and there was violence in the city of Sodom as well as in the other four cities.

Noah and his entire family including his daughters in law were taken into the Ark.

Lot and his family had to flee on foot, his sons in law would not leave the city and his wife looked back and they were destroyed.

Noah sent a raven and a dove to see if the waters were receding.

Lot and his daughters had no way to know if the judgment was over.

What was saved from the destruction? Noah saved all that he needed The Lord God told Noah to bring the animals on the Ark to save them. He had all that he needed to replenish after the flood was over.

Lot did not save anything. He was saved as someone who runs out of his burning house with nothing but clothes he was wearing. All his works were burned up.

For no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.  Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work.… 1 Corinthians 3:12-13

The Lord God made a Covenant with Noah after the flood, to never again destroy the earth by water. He used the rainbow as a sign of the covenant. Genesis 8:20-22.

No covenant was made with Lot, however the Lord God did not make a covenant to never judge the earth by fire again.

After the destruction: Noah offered a sacrifice after the flood.

Lot was fearful of continuing destruction and fled to hide a cave.

Noah knew they were the only people left on earth and that they were to be fruitful and multiply.

Lots daughters believed that they were the last three people on the earth and could only repopulate the earth through incest with their father.

Noah and his sons were commanded to be fruitful and fill the earth and they did so. Genesis 9:1.

Lot and his daughters were not commanded to be fruitful and fill the earth but they did so in a sinful way.

God put the fear of man into all animals.

Lot and his daughters were fearful. Genesis 19:30.

Wine and sexual perversion after the destruction: Noah got drunk and was unaware of what took place. ‘His nakedness was seen by his son Ham.’

Lot got drunk and was unaware that his daughters had sexual relations with him.

God remembered Noah and caused the waters to subside.

Abraham, not Lot, was remembered by God and because of this, Lot was saved from the destruction of the fire. Genesis 19:29.

Dates are given for different stages of the judgment of the flood.

No date is given for the judgment by fire.

All mankind and all nations are descendants of Noah and his sons.

All of Lot’s descendants came through him and his daughters. Only the nations of Moab and Ammon, the two enemies of Israel came from Lot.

Honor and dishonor of their descendants: Noah’s descendants through Shem were men of honor whom the Lord God used; and this included Abraham, Isaac and Jacob together with Jacob’s 12 sons. God made a covenant with all of them. Some of Noah’s descendants through Ham were cursed; this included Amalek, who God said he would be at war with until the end of time.

Lot’s descendants were dishonored and were enemies of those under the Covenant. His descendants were born through incest with his own daughters , these are the people of Moab which means: ‘from father’. The other daughter named her son Benammi, which means: ‘son of my people.’ He became the father of the people of Ammon. This is the name of the capital of the nation of Jordan. Although Lot was related to Abraham, he did not follow in his ways.

The method of destruction: water destroyed the world in Noah’s day. Water is usually a substance that brings life because life cannot exist without it. The Lord God said He will never again destroy the Earth with a flood. Judgment came from the heavens and from the fountains of the deep.

Jude 1:7. “Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, of punishment.

Fire destroyed Sodom and the others cities in Lots’ day. Fire brings death and purification, the judgment came from the heavens. Genesis 19:23.We know that the destruction at the end of this age will be by fire. 2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

The extent of judgment: In Noah’s day, all animal life on the earth except what lived in the oceans and those on the Ark. Plant life recovered after the flood without any help from Noah or his family.

In Lot’s day, all life in the area of the five cities including plant life did not recover because the sulfur caused the soil to become too acidic, there is little that grows there even today.

In Noah’s day the wicked had no idea of the coming judgment, they were doing all the normal things of daily life.

In Lot’s day the wicked did not know of the coming judgment, they too were doing all the normal things of daily life.

In Noah’s day the wicked were taken out of the world and made examples for others who would want to live like them.

In Lot’s day the wicked were taken out of the world and made examples for others who would want to live like them.

Noah and his family were not taken out of the world.

Those who were delivered from Lot’s family were not taken out of the world.

In Noah’s day the judgment started in the daytime when the fountains of the deep burst forth. Genesis 7:11.

In Lot’s day the judgment started in the evening when the angels came, but the fire fell at dawn. Genesis 19:1.

Noah and his family could not see the judgment because they were in the ark with the window and door shut.

Lot and his family were told not to look at the judgment but his wife did, and she was destroyed together with the wicked.

Noah preached righteousness for 100 years without one convert because there was great spiritual blindness in the people.

In Lot’s day, the angels caused the wicked people to be struck with physical blindness.

Noah and his family were the only eight people out of the whole world, so the ratio of those saved to those destroyed could easily have been 1 in 1 million.

Lot and his two daughters were saved out of several small cities. The ratio could have been 3 out of 3000 or 1 in 1000 as those cities were small.

Noah and his family were transported in the ark above the mountains, they did not need to do anything to escape.

Lot and his daughters had to flee on foot over the rough ground. They had to make their own way in their own strength and could not carry much with them; they never left the surface of the earth.

After the flood, Noah and his family had a large place to live on top of the mountains. He may well have lived in the Ark after the animals had left and their home would have been 450’ x 75’ with 15 foot ceilings. Those who are righteous when Messiah returns will live in the new Jerusalem that comes down from heaven.

Lot and his daughters first went to the small city of Zoar then they became fearful and ended up living in a cave with very few possessions.

Those who are unrighteous and who see Messiah returning in great glory, will try to hide themselves in caves and rocks. Revelation 6:16 And they said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb,

There are too many similarities today to the days of Noah and Lot to ignore and as violence/hamas is again filling the earth and Matthew 24:12 tells us because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

Many are falling away from the faith. Now is the time for our light to shine in the darkness and offer the good news of the gospel of the kingdom. It is time to tell people there is forgiveness of sin and of the grace and mercy we can receive through Messiah to restore our relationship with His Heavenly Father. Messiahs sacrificial death at calvary was on purpose to redeem us and give us eternal life.

If you have not received Yeshua/Jesus as your personal Savior and Lord and if you are not certain where your eternal future lies…make sure right now. Today is the day of salvation for we do not know the day nor the hour of His return…let’s all be ready …time is running out..

Shalom aleikhem

chaverim and mishpachah!

Peace to friends and family.

Shavua Tov, Have a blessed week.

Make certain Messiah Jesus/Yeshua is your Redeemer, Savior, Lord and soon returning King and that you have a personal relationship with Him.

It’s all about Life and Relationship, NOT Religion.

You are very precious in His sight.

Not sure ..you can be…

SIMPLY SAY THE FOLLOWING MEANING IT FROM YOUR HEART..don’t delay one more minute,

SAY IT RIGHT NOW…

Heavenly Father I come to you in the Name of Jesus/Yeshua asking for forgiveness of my sins for which I am truly sorry. I repent of them all and turn away from my past.

I believe with my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus/Yeshua is your Son and that He died on the cross at calvary to pay the price for my sin, so that I might be forgiven and have eternal life in the kingdom of Heaven. Father I believe that Jesus/Yeshua rose from the dead and I ask you to come into my life right now and be my personal Savior and Lord and I will worship you all the days of my life. Because your word is truth I say that I am now forgiven and born again and by faith I am washed clean with the blood of Jesus/Yeshua. Thank you that you have accepted me into your family in Jesus’/Yeshua’s name.

Plumb line!

אֲנָ֑ךְ   a plumb line

anak: to plummet

Original Wordאֲנָךְ
Part of SpeechNoun Masculine
Transliteration: anak
Phonetic Spelling: an-awk’

This was given in a vision to Amos.

amos  עָמ֔וֹס  amows

Strongs#5986

In the 7th chapter of Amos, He sees 5 things in visions:

1st. Locusts or grasshoppers destroying the crops and land. 7:2 When the locusts finished eating the vegetation of the land, I said, “Lord God, please forgive! … So the Lord relented…

When Amos prayed the Lord relented.

2nd Fire destroying the land. 4 The Lord God showed me this: The Lord God was calling for a judgment by fire. It consumed the great deep and devoured the land. 5 Then I said, “Lord God, please stop! …“This too shall not be,” said the Lord God.

When Amos prayed the Lord relented again.

3rd. Amos saw a plumb line in Gods’ hands…

7 Thus He showed me: Behold, the Lord stood on a wall made with a plumb line, with a plumb line in His hand. And the Lord said to me,

“Amos, what do you see?”

And I said, “A plumb line.”

and this time Amos did not pray.

4th A Basket of Summer Fruit

This is what my Lord Adonai has shown me: See, there was a basket of summer fruit. 2 He said: “Amos, what do you see?” “A basket of summer fruit,”

In the fourth vision, the Lord is showing that His people Israel, are ripe for judgment. Amos denounces the oppression and greed of the chieftains in vers. 4-10, and warns them that those who despise the Word of God shall some day suffer from a famine of that Word.

The word for

summer fruit

is

קַיִץ  qayits.

This word is used to describe the harvest.

There is an interesting play on the words,

qaits is the Hebrew for summer fruit,

and qêts is Hebrew for end.

It is harvest time, the end of the agricultural year.

This fruit was the last harvest in Israel. When it was gathered, the farming cycle came to an end and as it was observed it gave the picture/idea of completeness. The picture, and the word expressing it, come together; the fruit-gathering, קיץ/qayits, like harvesting  crops, was called from cutting, so also the word, end, cutting off, in קץ qêts.

At harvest-time there is no more to be done for that crop; whether it is good or bad, it has reached its end, and is cut down

Summer fruit – kayitz

Prophetically, this basket depicts

the imminent time of judgment

because

the fruit is ready now for picking.

The whole cycle of our Fathers’ dealings with His children is completed. His mercies, instructions, chastizings, corrections, visitations, warnings and revelations, were completed and Israel is ripe like the harvest for the final judgment, one that will sweep down like a scythe.

5th Amos saw the Lord standing beside the altar.

The Lord stands beside the Holy altar of worship and Amos speaks the terrible judgment of the Lord upon His covenant people.

I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and He said,

“Strike the doorposts, that the thresholds may shake,

And break them on the heads of them all.

I will slay the last of them with the sword.

He who flees from them shall not get away,

And he who escapes from them shall not be delivered.

“Though they dig into hell,

From there My hand shall take them;

Though they climb up to heaven,

From there I will bring them down;

The word of the LORD – Amos 9:2 NKJV

Israel had broken covenant and the words of the Lord that followed, reveal a terrible judgment and the death of His people of promise.

In Amos 7:7-9 we are given a picture of Israels spiritual state at that time. Amos was a seer or some say prophet. He saw things by way of God’s Spirit, he literally saw into the spiritual realm, in visions. Many of the prophets were simply given words to speak as we often read “the word of the lord came unto”… But others like Ezekiel and Elisha saw into the hidden realms of what was either actually happening, or what was about to take place.

In this instance with Amos in 1:1 it was given to him 2 years before the earthquake for a warning to the people to repent and change their ways! In verses 10-17 Amatzyah, the priest at Bethel, was a priest serving at the false altar built there at Beit El; who thought that the Northern Kingdom was in the right. The visions continued almost as though the priest Amatzyah at Bethel had had a change of heart following Amos’ appearance, and had stopped persecuting him.

Turn back a few pages to Amos 3:7..

7 “For the Lord God does nothing. without revealing his secret to His servants the prophets.

Our Heavenly Father will always give warnings of what He is about to do; and tells us by way of prophecy before He does anything.

10 Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying,

“Amos has conspired against you right here in the house of Israel. The land cannot endure all his words…

12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go away, you seer!

Amos responds to the priest with the anointing of the Lord in his calling.

“I was no prophet…, But I was a sheep-breeder.

The five signs build in intensity and importance…

for this post we will focus on the 3rd vision Amos had.

“The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in His hand. And the Lord said to me, Amos, what do you see? And I said, A plumb line. Then said the Lord, Behold, I am setting a plumb line as a standard in the midst of My people Israel. I will not pass by and spare them any more [the door of mercy is shut]. And the [idolatrous] high places of Isaac (Israel) shall be desolate and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise with the sword against the house of King Jeroboam [who set up the golden calf shrines].[AMP]

What is a plumb line?

The plumb line

is used symbolically outside of Scripture for:

a divine, objective, and reliable standard of moral uprightness, justice, and truth.

The plumb line metaphors used in these contexts for a divine, objective, and reliable standard for truth, justice, and morality are compatible with the symbolic use of the plumb line in Scripture.

The idiom

plumb the depths

is derived from nautical usage; note the significance as we dig deeper into the Word:

Used to prevent a ship from running aground or to determine depth for dropping an anchor, seamen would sometimes lower a lead weight attached to a rope until it hit sea bottom. The rope was then retracted, and the wet portion measured to determine the depth of the water.

From this practice came the idiom, plumbing the depths, which means: to explore or examine something intensely to find the answer.

No matter whether the tool is a plumb line or a bubble level, the conceptual imagery of level and plumb is still the same – specifically, aligning ourselves to the divine, unseen laws of the universe.

Water follows the same gravitational laws that align the plumb line. For example, the liquid in a cup of or bowl will remain level even when placed on an un-level surface, leaving and oval shape of liquid below the rim of the container.  The early Egyptians used hollowed out boards filled with water to check if something was level. It was only a matter of time, before a more useful instrument utilizing the leveling abilities of water was invented. That instrument is the bubble level, also called spirit level. (An interesting name as we are speaking of spiritual things!) Since the invention of the bubble level in the 17th Century, it has more or less replaced the plumb line for most plumbing and leveling needs. With further technological advancements, the bubble level is beginning to be replaced by the digital and laser levels, however even these levels are still dependent on the leveling properties of water/liquid to calculate their readings.

Plumb lines work because of the law of gravity. In every location in the world, gravity pulls objects toward the center of the earth. This law ensures that the plumb line will hang perfectly vertical anywhere on earth, allowing it to be a dependable standard for construction. Because the plumb line responds consistently to gravity, it serves as an objective, universal, and reliable absolute to which builders and carpenters can align their structures. Further, because gravity is an unseen force and the plumb line is always true, it’s very obvious why the plumb line became a symbol for a divine standard of morality, justice, and truth.

What is it used for?

A plumb line is a metal weight on the end of a string which is used to determine if a wall being constructed is vertical, straight, or not! Our Heavenly Father holds this measure against Israel, to see if they are straight against His standards.

Isn’t it true that we sometimes have the audacity to put a plumb line up to our Father telling Him that He doesn’t measure up to our expectations? That’s bad enough, but it is even worse when He puts a plumb line to us. Why? Because we all fall short of His glory.

If someone were to try to build a wall without a plumb line, the wall would probably move off the vertical to some degree and then it would not have sufficient structural integrity!

In this text, God is speaking through the prophet Amos about the condition of the corporate heart of His people Israel. The word wall in the Old Testament is often described as the human heart. The Lord now seems to stand upon this wall/Heart and He measures it; it appears to be a bulging wall that is bowing out. The structure and the house of Israel will fall!

Firstly, the plumb line is used in construction.

Secondly, the plumb line is used for testing what is built.

And, thirdly, it appears from the text that the plumb line is used in the work of destruction, for the casting down of that which is found not to be straight.

Israel was put to the test of God’s plumb line, and failed.

They failed to build correctly and what they built failed the test. What they had built, now had to be removed, so that a better one could be constructed. In the context of that failure, the rumbles of the approaching Assyrian horses hoofs could be heard!

Here again, the plumb line symbolizes God’s word!

God’s word is always straight, perfect and pure!

God’s word represents total soundness and integrity!

V 7-9 by a wall made with a plumb line.

If a building is not built true to a plumb or a spirit level that is absolutely straight up and down it will not stand for long.

If a Spirit level was placed against our life today, how upright and in line with the building blocks of chaim/life are we? The plumb line is a metaphor to show how off kilter the building was, in this case Israel.

Eph. 2:21 in whom each several building, fitly framed together, groweth into a holy temple in the Lord;

Fitly framed together – The word used here means:

to joint together,

as a carpenter does the frame-work of a building.

The materials are accurately and carefully united by mortises and tenons joints, so that the building will be firm and stable.

We are to understand that this building is inclusive of all the saints, and people of God; of the whole ecclesia/church, which is God’s building; and is a building of a spiritual nature, and will abide for ever.

The translators actually use three words in the English

to parallel the three words in the Greek.

Fitly framed together.

The first one is sun, which means together with.

The second one is harmos which means joint.

Joined together with.

And the third logeo, which is the verb of logos, which has the idea to arrange in order.

This could be like an arrangement of music or an arrangement of a sentence. However it’s to put something in order, and it’s a picture of what our Heavenly Father is doing to us, not something that we’re doing to ourselves. He is placing in the church and joining together with and fitly framing. It’s the idea of harmoniously fitting together, in a tight cohesiveness.

7:8 I am going to put out a plumb line among my people ..I will never again overlook their offenses.

He saw it as the standard of truth that it is, as the standard for vertical against which all structures would be judged as true. Just as the gravity, (electro-magnetivity), causes a plumb-line to hang perfectly and only vertical, is one of the most indisputable, consistent, physical forces known to mankind. This same powerful force holds the planets of our solar system in their orbits, just as the eternal character of our Heavenly Father is the force behind the standard of His word. His word is the standard against which, all spiritual buildings are compared, and it is the very means by which He builds a spiritual building.

His Word is the plumb-line He uses, to build a plumb spiritual wall. However, it is only seen as a plumb-line in relation to the wall, so in order for Amos to see the plumb-line, the Lord held it up next to the wall.

Amos sees the Lord standing by a wall built true to plumb (vertical), and the wall is built true to plumb because the Lord built the wall using the plumb-line that He held in His hand. The wall symbolizes God’s remnant people, that wall of living stones that He is building up into a holy habitation for Himself. It also speaks of the walls that surround Jerusalem that have been broken down, and that He is restoring.

Just as Amos looked at God’s Word and saw a plumb-line next to a wall, so the standard of God’s Word will only be revealed as the only standard of plumb; as it is seen in relation to His people, the Holy remnant. God is going to hold His Word up to His people and say look, the wall (heart) matches the plumb-line –

My people match My Word!

Only in relation to His people can anyone truly see the standard of His Word, for when the church at large views the Word of God, they don’t see it as a plumb-line, but as a list of concepts tied to the weight of Biblical authority. They can overlook or twist much in order to fit their concepts of God and spiritual things, pulling it down to the level of their own personal experience. However, when the Word of God is held up next to those who have been built according to its’ standard, suddenly, all else is shown to be crooked. In relation to God’s people who are becoming the Word of God, both the true standard contained in His word is revealed, and so is the spiritual poverty of the church’s religion and traditions.

This was revealed in many of the children of Israel not having, ‘eyes to see and ears to hear’, when Messiah came. However, one day soon they will have the blinders removed from off their eyes and see Him who they pierced, when the times of the gentiles are fulfilled.

In Romans 11 Paul makes a compelling statement which he refers to as a mystery; that a partial hardening has happened until “the fullness of the Gentiles has come in” (Romans 11:25, ESV). The context helps us understand the meaning of the partial hardening and what the fullness of the Gentiles is.

While there are believing Jews and Gentiles, Paul explains that the nation of Israel as a whole has not yet received her Messiah; (Romans 10:18—11:10), but one day they will be saved through believing in their Messiah. The fullness of the Gentiles in Romans 11:25 reminds us of God’s worldwide focus; with the proclamation of the gospel of salvation. Also the chronology with the times of the Gentiles not yet complete. One day, the fullness of the Gentiles will be complete, and God will deliver the nation of Israel. Anyone who might have doubts about God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises, can consider these passages as important reminders that God has a detailed plan that He is fulfilling patiently and carefully.

(Romans 11:26).

In the meantime, Paul explains that there is a partial hardening of the nation and that many will refuse the Messiah, until the fullness of the Gentiles occurs. Israel’s hardening will continue until the divinely set number of Gentiles He has planned are saved: “Some of the people of Israel have hard hearts, but this will last only until the full number of Gentiles comes to Christ” (Romans 11:25, NLT).

God is building a spiritual building. He is rebuilding the walls that have been broken down since the standard set through the Apostles and Prophets of old. When that wall is completed, He is going to hold His holy and unchangeable Word up to His glorious remnant church, and His people will meet the standard of His word. He is then going to set the plumb-line in the midst of His people Israel and He is going to show for all of heaven, hell, and earth to see that she does not match up to the standard of His Word. This also applies to all believers in that He will show the poverty and the error of a people who believed a lie about themselves, seeing themselves as rich and increased with goods, and in need of nothing, when in fact the plumb line standard will show them to be wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. Revelation 3:17.

God said, “Behold, I will set a plumb-line in the midst of my people Israel; I will not again pass by them any more…”God is going to build His remnant people up until they match the standard of His Word, and He is then going to hold His Word up next to them to show that they match up. His people will then show His Word to be the standard by which God will measure His people, and He will then set the standard up against Israel and no longer spare them.

What a terrible revelation when the religious church sees her true condition for the first time, that which God has tried so many times to show her and see for the first time see what His remnant church has had to face so many times. Because His remnant church admitted her true condition that she wasn’t built plumb, the line could be used to build her and the Word of God was free to do its’ intended work. Not so with Israel as Amos saw, because she refused to admit her true condition, and now comes the horrific revelation that she’s not a part of that spiritual building at all and only after it’s too late. For her, the plumb line will no longer be used to build her but to show the shame of her condition. He will spare her no longer but will set His word in her midst for judgment as the Lord comes to her with the plumb-line in his hand.

iIs there a plumb line of the universe?…

and if so what would it be?

Is the plumb line of the universe the sound,

the frequency of Holiness?

Holy Holy Holy!

In Revelation 4:8 we read,

“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty.”

The one with all power, all authority, and all might is holy.

In Isaiah 6 notice the same refrain,

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts” or “Lord of armies.”

Psalm 99 and Romans 8:19 also tie together these two concepts of holiness and power.

The Lord is coming to His people – all of His people. He will draw near to His people, but as He says in Mal. 3:5 speaking of those for whom it is too late, “Then I will draw near to you for judgment…” The Lord told us years ago that He is coming to every church, that He knows which ones will open the door to Him when He knocks. For some He will come for blessing, and for some He will come for Judgment – the people will decide which it will be.

He is coming with His plumb-line in His hand.

This is exactly what a plumb-line is for, to make the work straight, or to test existing work and to see if it is standing true. It’s mostly used by builders, bricklayers, who want a finished wall to be properly constructed, to be standing totally straight.

Despite the simplicity of its’ appearance, it’s just a piece of string with a weight on the end, the plumb-line is an important safety device.

A wall that is off the true vertical plane, will be a danger to those who use the building, for it would be seriously weaken the structure and it would be in danger of collapse.

In the book of Amos, God shows the prophet that He is setting a plumb-line to:

test the faithfulness of his people.

He speaks to the prophet and asks him what he sees, and what he sees is a familiar sight.

A wall, with the Lord standing beside the wall, holding a plumb-line against that wall, and declaring that the wall is ‘off-plumb.’

God declares that the wall is His people, and that because the wall has failed the test, falling well short of what it should be, it must be removed, and a new wall built.

Our situation is far worse, we have what happened to Israel, as an example for us, so we could avoid their mistakes and yet, incredibly, we are indulging in that same rebellious immorality that Isaiah warned against:

“What could have been done more to My vineyard,

God asks Isaiah 5:4, that I have not done in it?”

To the works of sin, as of holiness, there is a beginning, then a progress, and a completion; a sowing of wild oats, as commonly said, and a fullness of wickedness; a maturity of people’s own plans and a maturity for destruction, in the sight of God. There was no more to be done, heavenly influences can only injure the ripened sinner, as dew, rain, sun, but the ripened fruit was Israel and she was ripe for destruction.

Isa 5:18 Woe to those who draw [calamity] with cords of iniquity and falsehood, who bring punishment to themselves with a cart rope of wickedness, 19 Who say, Let [the Holy One] make haste and speed His [prophesied] vengeance, that we may see it; and let the purpose of the Holy One of Israel draw near and come, that we may know it! 20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and prudent and shrewd in their own sight! . . . .

24 Therefore, as the tongue of fire devours the stubble, and as the dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their root shall be like rottenness and their blossom shall go up like fine dust—because they have rejected and cast away the law and the teaching of the Lord of hosts and have not believed but have treated scornfully and have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.25 Therefore is the anger of the Lord kindled against His people, and He has stretched forth His hand against them and has smitten them. And the mountains trembled, and their dead bodies were like dung and sweepings in the midst of the streets. For all this, His anger is not turned away, but His hand is still stretched out [in judgment].26 And He will lift up a signal to call together a hostile people from afar [to execute His judgment on Judea], and will hiss for them from the end of the earth [as bees are hissed from their hives], and behold, they shall come with speed, swiftly! [AMP]

We have but one hope:
So, now, let us think, and let it be us that trembles before the only begotten Son of the Father, who bears the humble but so very revealing plumb-line in His resurrected, nail-pierced hand.

GOD Bears long, but HE Will Not Bear always with a provoking people.

God measures-up modern people too and we too fall far short. Measured against the law, we are very far away from the perfect, upright, righteous, moral beings we need to be in order to be admitted to fellowship with a God who is Holy and completely perfect in every respect. 1 John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth. That’s because we are sinners and every bit as rebellious as the Israelites of Amos’s day. Like them, there is nothing for us but judgment and  justice, receiving what we deserve from God, judgement and eternal punishment. However there is HOPE…….

God took His plumb line and measured-up His own Son Jesus.

There was only one man who ever completely kept the law and God’s standards to the full; only one who when the plumb-line test was applied, was perfectly accurate in righteousness, and that One was Messiah Jesus/Yeshua. In fact, God said to him, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Matthew 3:17. And having declared the perfection of His own Son, God delivered Him up for us, at the cross, to take our sin and our punishment upon Himself, so that God’s perfect justice would be fulfilled in Him.

The plumb line is defined as justice and righteousness.

Isaiah 28:16-17

Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

Galatians 3:10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

What should be our response to the plumb-line?

Realizing our own sinfulness, knowing that when our Heavenly Father measures us against His perfect standards, that we would fall short, and be under the curse of the law; being condemned by our own sins to be cast away from His presence for ever. And seeing clearly, through Holy Spirit’s work that Messiah/Christ has died for sinners, to take the punishment that they deserve, we respond, by repenting of our sins, and putting our trust in Him as our saviour.

To summarize: The plumb line symbolizes God’s Word!

God’s Word is always straight, perfect and pure!

God’s Word represents total soundness and integrity!

The wall in Greek means ’heart.’

Could God be watching men’s hearts? Of course He is!

Remember, every person will give an account to the plumb line

2 Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. In this you have done foolishly; therefore from now on you shall have wars.”

King Asa decided to trust in a perverted ‘Plumb Line!’

Hebrews 4: 12-13 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

A plumb line is ALWAYS perfect, it doesn’t matter how you hold it.

Only Adonai the Lord, our Heavenly Father and Messiah Jesus/Yeshua are perfect.

And Holiness is the key.

The people that Amos was told to send a message to, had turned away from God, their hearts had become crooked. We can use God’s Word, the Bible, as our plumb line, however Messiah is also like our plumb line showing us what is good and right?

Say this out loud so you can hear it...

I don’t want to miss my season

and the time of my visitation.

There are:

signs in the heavens and famine of the word

8:9-11

and all who say disaster will not overtake us will die

9:10

prepare to meet thy god if you have not repented

4:12

if you seek Me you will survive twice!

5:4&6

v 14 seek good

He asks us today

Did you repent when you heard the Word of the Lord?

And did you bow down when the Lord showed you mercy?

This simple tool can help us understand whether what we have built is true, accurately straight and plumb, accurately vertical.

Matthew 24: Is a plumb line of judgment being held to us, to our civilization even as we read?

Because the time will come, when those who have been spared often, shall be spared no longer. However the Lord still calls Israel His people, which they are; and we are the grafted in gentile believers, furthermore …He is still calling today…

We need to show Repentance and Humility – to turn away form ALL that is not of His Kingdom – then when the judgment of the Lord comes, and when we cry out for mercy, forgiveness and the cleansing of His precious Blood….He hears and applies that Blood to our lives.

In truth, it would seem that holiness

is the plumb line of our Heavenly Fathers universe?

Now we know what Amos saw….

Shalom shalom mishpachah/family

and cheverim/friends!

You are loved, appreciated and prayed for..

It’s all about Life and Relationship,

NOT Religion.

You are precious in His sight.

NOT SURE?

YOU CAN BE..

SAY THE FOLLOWING FROM YOUR HEART RIGHT NOW…

Amen

What I Am Doing You Do Not Know Now But You Will Know Later!

John 13:4 –

The disciples did not always understand what or why Jesus/Yeshua was doing or saying certain things. He also said: if you do not understand natural things how will you understand heavenly spiritual concepts John 3:12 and 1 Corinthians 2:14

In this statement in John 13 we are familiar with the usual interpretation of washing feet as being the action of humility and of submission verse12.

And another verse 16, KJV says: Verily, verily, I say unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. (Here we get our word apostle as it means, a sent one.)

Everything Messiah said and did had significance because He did not do anything except He heard it from His Heavenly Father.

Historically it was the local custom to offer water and to wash guests feet.

We read in

Luke 7:44 Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

It was not a strange thing to do or have done to you. They walked everywhere and didn’t have modern day footwear.

The roads were dusty and hot and it is a refreshing thing to have ones feet washed clean.

He was showing the humility even as their Lord and Rabbi that we should minister to one another’s needs but also showing that the Lord was not too above them in any kind of pride to not be able to be as a servant doing lowly tasks.

So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done for you. John 13:14-15

It is a picture of Messiah as a servant, and His call to His followers to also be servants for His people to serve each other in the same spirit that Messiah served His disciples.

However this was not the only significance of His actions and words…

So why else did Jesus/Yeshua wash their feet?

It was as a proclamation of what He was doing for them and was going to do for them – He was going to take away their sin…He was going to bear their sin! When He died on the cross/tree as the sinless lamb of God.

We all know that if we clean someone’s dirty feet, we are going to get dirty too, some of the dirt is going to be transferred and get on us! That is exactly what happened to Jesus/Yeshua on the cross – the dirt of our sin was removed from us and covered Him.

Some Christian denominations emphasize salvation and justification by grace, through faith NOT by works. (Ephesians 2:8-9) Sometimes, with that over emphasis on salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, we might forget that it was the act /the work, that brought salvation.

It was the punishment that brought us peace/shalom.

It was actually a work…it was in fact THE WORK of all works. prophesied to happen from genesis.

The work of the cross/Tav.

What Messiah did on the cross – suffering physically; plus He also absorbed the wrath of God for all of humanities sins. It was and is the most labor-intensive action/work, in the entire history of creation. As such it is the very definition of work, and foot-washing is an illustration; and in its own way is a proclamation of the good news of the gospel – Jesus Christ/Yeshua HaMashiach and Him crucified. The picture of all our dirt, our sin and filth laid on Him.

Fulfilled from Isaiah 53:3-7 prophecy

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was.
He was like someone people turned away from; He was despised, and we didn’t value Him. Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds. We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished Him for the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth.

It is a picture of what Jesus/Yeshua did for His people.

So much symbolism! and even some that we may have missed.

In John 13 in the Greek,

The towel around His WAIST was a lention

λέντιον, ου, τό

(len’-tee-on)

Definition: a linen cloth, a towel
Usage: a towel, apron, coarse cloth

A linen clothlinen is representing righteousness. Is. 11:5

Righteousness shall be the belt of his WAIST,

and faithfulness the belt of his loins.

The linen that was around His waist, the same linen that He wiped away the dirt from His disciples feet was the same linen used for the garment that the High Priest wore to present the sacrifice on Yom Kippur, the one day a year when he went to place blood on the kaporet/covering/wiping away for the sins of the people.

Hebrew: הַכַּפֹּֽרֶת ha-kappōreṯ or mercy seat was the gold lid placed on the Ark of the Covenant, with two cherubim beaten out of the ends to cover and create the space into which Gods presence appeared. The word derives from the Hebrew root כ.פ.ר, and these can divided into two approaches: Lid or Cover— In its qal form, כ.פ.ר means “to cover” (as in Gen 6:14), [8] and thus can be simply translated as “cover” or “lid.” Consider also the fact that the ark is spoken of as a throne has led to the translation of kapporet as “mercy seat.” Is this translation correct as Psalm 99:1 and 1 Samuel 4:4 say literally that the Lord “sits the cherubim,” which must be understood as “sits on or above the cherubim”?

This is THE PASSION of Jesus/Yeshua, in other words, the ultimate High Priestly WORK of presenting blood upon the Ark/Altar/Heavenly Kapporet of God. Interesting note: the word used in the Septuagint to translate the Hebrew word kapporet/cover, is the Greek word hilasterios (ἱλαστ ή ριος).

We may already have known these reasons, however, there is yet another layer of meaning connected to this occasion.

Why did Peter say wash my hands and head also?

For this answer we must travel back once again into Torah. We have to remember that they were very familiar with all of the Torah and the contents of the Old Testament scrolls.

As with other scripture there are levels of understanding and meaning and each of them is relevant and applicable.

We do ourselves a disservice when we neglect or worst ignore the Old Covenant (/Testament/Tenach/Torah/Prophets /Writings). For then we miss the roots and foundation for Jesus/Yeshua fulfilling God’s plan written clearly in His word/the Scriptures for us. These scrolls of the scriptures are the foundations of Gods plan of the ages. They were written so we have a reference to be our guide.

It is over 2000 years since Jesus/Yeshua, the Door/Dalet ushered in the age of grace and the age has almost run its course; and just as in Genesis 7:16, God shut the door to the ark of Noah, the dalet/door of grace will also close. As in the days of Noah in Matthew 24:39. Let’s make sure we are on the right side of the Dalet.

The word Scriptures here refers to the Jewish Scriptures, what we call the Old Testament, which is another word for Old Covenant. We call it the Old Testament, or Old Covenant, because we believe that the Jewish Messiah has come—namely, Jesus/Yeshua—and by His death and resurrection has inaugurated a New Testament, that is, a re-newed covenant.

ie. A Ketubah (Hebrew: כְּתוּבָּה) is a Jewish marriage contract or marriage agreement/ covenant. The Ketubah is the marriage contract between the bride and the groom at the Jewish wedding.

It outlines the grooms responsibility to the bride! Yeshua/Jesus to His ecclesia/body/us!

In Israel today, the ketubah, whose name derives from the Aramaic and Hebrew root “katav,” which means “to write,” is binding under civil, as well as religious, law.

We are betrothed/engaged to Him we in relationship with Him as His כלה /Kallah/Bride. All we are waiting for is the Bridegroom/Messiah coming for His Bride/Us/Ecclesia/Called out Ones/His Body of Believers.

The disciples were also very familiar with the layout of the Temple and all the necessary sacrifices required to pay the price for sin. Which in reality is how a sinner was back then able to approach a Holy sinless God. The innocent life pays for the sin and for the sinner today of course, Messiah the sinless lamb/son of God.

These offerings are the burnt offering, the grain offering, the peace offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering. Three of these offerings relate in particular to sin and its effects. They highlight the different ways in which sin taints the worshipper, the place of worship, and the community.

A guilt offering (Hebrew: אשם‎, romanized: ’āšām, lit. ‘guilt, trespass’; plural ashamot), also referred to in English as a trespass offering (KJV, 1611)

To take all of this situation into context, we have to remember that this was happening at Passover/Pesach. He knew that this meal was the last opportunity to minister to His disciples before His death and resurrection, John 13:1;

and with Judas still there until 13:27, when he leaves; He spoke without revealing all that was about to be fulfilled.

Jesus/Yeshua knew that He had come to fulfill all the Torah/ Law, the prophets and Writings, which is what He said to them later on the road to Emmaus Luke 24:13-35.

The cross was a mystery and until He died and was resurrected it was not fully understood. The Apocalypse/revealing of the cross sent shock waves throughout the spiritual realm.

This is one of the reasons Our heavenly Father does not always tell all the details or the timing of His plans and purposes before hand.

Mark 4:11 Mystery of the kingdom of God, the mysteries were revealed in the parables and were for those with ears to hear.

Specifically too this is surely why He said no man knows the day nor the hour of His return.

Already He had said He was the Way, Truth and Life; and during the Pesach/Passover Seder meal He was confirming He was the Passover Lamb with His body and blood, (unleavened bread, without sin and wine.) Remember John had declared Him to be the Lamb of God.

The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29

All He came to fulfill was prophesied in the Tenach /Torah;(Law, Prophets and Writings).

And he said to them, These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Luke 24:44

John 5:39 The Scriptures tell about me, You study the Scriptures, because you think that in them you will find eternal life. And these very Scriptures speak about me! You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, yet they testify about Me.

He clearly said I have come to fulfill not to destroy Matt. 5:17-19

Recall: Fulfilling the Torah was the task of a first century rabbi.

The technical term for interpreting the Scripture so it would be obeyed correctly was, fulfill.

To interpret Scripture incorrectly, so it would not be obeyed as God intended, was to destroy the Torah.

Gods’ word is always line upon line, precept upon precept He adds to, building upon His promises.

Is 28:10 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 10For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: 11For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

Everything that happened was fulfilling the types and shadows of Messiah and the theme of blood and water runs throughout the whole Bible.

That is a huge subject but for this post we will just concentrate on the two questions asked.

So why did Jesus/Yeshua wash their feet?

Why did Peter say wash my hands and head also in reference to the post title? What I am doing you do you not know now but you will know later.

Again with reference to Torah, specifically, (Exodus 25-27); we have to look at and understand the reason for, and all the symbolic details of, the Mishkan/Tabernacle and the Ketubah/Covenant.

The key to the Mishkan/Tabernacle is Messiah.

It symbolized the dwelling place/throne/presence of God in the midst of His people.

As a type of Jesus/Yeshua, it symbolized the meeting between God and man and

(Heb. 9:21-24; 2 Cor. 5:19; Col. 2:9; Heb. 10:5; Rev. 21:3; Jn. 1:14 2:13-22).

The reconciliation between God and Humanity.

The pattern of the Tabernacle in the wilderness was also reflected in both the first and second temples in Jerusalem and reveals that Messiah Jesus/Yeshua is the minister of the sanctuary, our High Priest and the true Tabernacle for He is the Way the Truth and the Life.

In Acts 9:2 The WAY refers to someone who is totally committed to God. First used in Gen. 18:19. Keep the Way of the Lord, in reference to a walk with the lord A WAY of life.

Used more than 50x in the Hebrew scriptures and

12x in the Brit Hadasha (re-new-ed covenant.)

God Himself tells us,” This is the WAY walk in it”. Walking in love/truth is the Way to spiritual maturity and then the kingdom of God will be established in us. When Jesus/Yeshua said these words, He was referencing The Temple. The Sanctuary is part of the Temple and also of the Tabernacle that was set apart for the Lord.

In the diagram below…there is far more depth to this pattern which is only touched on here as connected to the Laver.

When Yeshua/Jesus spoke these words, He was painting a picture of HIMSELF. This is what He was trying to convey to them that although this was the Mishkan/Temple WAY to approach God they had been used to and they knew there is ONLY ONE WAY to enter the HOLY of HOLIES and that is through the 3 entrances.

He is the embodiment of these 3 entrances.

It is only by following HIM that we may see the Father (God).

The Temple had an OUTER COURT where sinners, even heathens were allowed and welcome, the first gateway or door,

(I AM the DOOR).

The Laver was to see one’s reflection and self cleanse.

The INNER COURT, which had the altar where people would deal with sin. It was a Holy Place and held the Menorah/7 Branched Golden Lampstand, the Table of the Bread of the Presence/Showbread and the Incense Altar. This is where the Priests ministered daily to the Lord.

Holy of Holies.      –      Holy Place    –          Outer Court

To enter the Holy Place, the Priest needed to be sanctified first.

Any Priest entering the Holy Place who had not already dealt with sin, would have been struck dead at the doorway. (Ex 28:42-43)

The Laver was located in the Outer courtyard (Ex. 40:6-7).

The courtyard surrounded the tabernacle (Ex. 40:8).

This was the bronze laver and it was filled with water, and its base was made from the women’s mirrors of highly polished bronze (Ex. 38:8). This is a great picture of a person who trusts Jesus/Yeshua for the forgiveness of sins.

The Priest needed to be sanctified first

by washing in the water of the Laver.

The Laver symbolizes our cleansing from sin – our holiness.

Once we are forgiven of our sins, God starts changing us to make us truly holy as He is holy (Phil. 2:12-13; 1 Pet. 1:16).

Water is symbolic of two concepts in scripture:

First, His Holy Spirit/Ruach HaKodesh, Who comes into our lives, convicts us of sin (John 16:8) and starts living in us to change us (John 7:37-39); and

Secondly the Word of God, which reveals to us our sin (John 15:3) and is useful for reproof, conviction, and instruction in righteousness (2 Tim. 3:16-17).

While the mirror at the bottom reminds us that we will still see our true sinful self (Rom. 7:24), it is also comforting because the symbolism reminds us that God knows in this life we are not yet perfect. We have not lost our salvation; we are just not yet free from sin in this life.

The bronze basin/ the bronze laver /kiyyor ha nechoset; used by the priests as the place of cleansing prior to entering the holy of holies to take the sacrificial blood and place it on the altar the kaporet/the lid of the ark as the sacrifice for sin of the people and also during their daily service in the Mishkan. (Remember only the high priest could go into the holy of holies once a year, to take the blood of the sinless sacrifice of the lamb without spot or blemish.)

The bronze basin stood near to the altar of sacrifice in the courtyard (Jesus/Yeshua being the sacrifice), and the priest would wash their hands and feet before ascending the altar to perform a sacrifice.

He was required to only wash hands and feet, the rest of the body being covered by the linen/righteousness the robes of office conferred.

These robes are now the robes of righteousness that we are clothed in as garments of salvation that all wedding guests must be wearing.

2 Cor. 5:21 Messiah Jesus/Yeshua, took all our sin and guilt; we received His perfect righteousness, in right standing … We stand before a Holy God dressed in robes of righteousness without spot or wrinkle.

Conclusion coming soon in part 2….

Meanwhile for those who have never been able to travel to Israel and with reference to the scriptures in Luke 17:28-30

Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

At-One-Ment With The One You Love

Special Word of Introduction:

Ecclesiastes 3 tells us there are different times and seasons. This is a time to be serious and to put away, to cast down and throw from us all that would distract and keep us from the One to whom we owe EVERYTHING.

We will sing of your love for ever, we will declare your faithfulness and mercy to the generations.

This is the pen-ultimate appointed time of the Hebrew calendar year. The 6th of 7 specific dates the Lord set into the annual cycle of life, incorporating the harvest seasons of the grains and fruits. Times chosen when The Lord God wanted to spend time with His people. They were all a prophetic type and shadow, a fore-telling of the coming Savior. A rehearsal for the future Messiah, JESUS who came a little over 2000 years ago and literally fulfilled the words of the prophets concerning God’s plan of the ages.

In Hebrew,Jesus was the burden removing, yoke destroying answer, redeeming mankind and all who will believe and trust in His atoning sacrifice of substitution at Calvary.

There His Blood has paid the price for ALL our transgressions. The wages of sin is death, meaning eternal separation from God’s presence. Because of Jesus, we will never have to experience that or have to personally pay the price for our errant ways. Ezekiel 18:20 ‘the soul who sins he shall die..’

Yom Kippur is all about the sacrificial offering of a pure unblemished innocent life, freely and willingly given to cover for sin, through the shedding of its blood. (For the life of the flesh is in the blood. Lev. 17:11) Yom haKipuriym/day of the Atonements, falls on the 10th day of the 7th month. It is not a feast day but rather a Holy convocation, an opportunity to deny ourselves, a time for self examination. A perfect opportunity for a heart (spiritual) check-up.As the High Priest performs the atonements for himself, the altar, the Tabernacle, and the whole community in Israel, we are encouraged to stop and think. To turn those thoughts to our own lives and allow an inner conviction to lead us to true repentance and then to the acceptance of the blood sacrifice of Jesus as a means of cleansing and forgiveness.Jesus our Messiah has clearly fulfilled both the position of our High Priest and that of our personal sacrifice, He atoned for us once and for all and is continually making intercession for us before the Father. He does not need to make sacrifices for Himself and for us year after year in order to atone for our sins–it has already been accomplished for ever. Hebrews 9:6–12

The weight and penalty of the sins, was symbolically transferred to the animal sacrifices for that year, so that forgiveness could be attained.

Our willingness to deny self on this day does not cause, aid or enhance our atonement, however it allows us to become acutely aware of our own mortality, our sin, our continuing need for atonement, and our desire for life. At the same time it causes us to appreciate on some minute level, the sacrifice the Master made as He denied His own life on our behalf and to re-evaluate our own commitment to walk in the way, the truth and the life, by obeying and keeping His commandments.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Matt.5:17-20

The sanctity and holiness of this day cannot be understated.

Though we may find great joy in our eternal atonement in Jesus the Messiah, this is a day for remembering the atonement in such a way that it should be very hard to forget in the busyness of daily life.

Although we are saved by grace and live by faith, we are still accountable for our individual lives and for changing our ways in compliance of being a ‘doer’ of the things Jesus taught and not a ‘hearer only’.

We are to be contemplative, repentant, humble and dead to ourselves because the self sacrifice necessary to atone for our sins is far beyond what any of us are able or willing to do. It would take every drop, every ounce of blood in our bodies to cover even our own sins, much less the sins of another.

However we can rejoice for the Messiah has come! Atonement has been made and He has obtained age enduring redemption, which is available for us! Justice is satisfied and Mercy fulfilled, once and for all!On Yom haKipuriym, day of the Atonements, we are also to remember that we live and breathe only because the Father so chooses, and that by His choice, He has the right and the power to take it away as well. A sobering reality.

Lk. 12:20; Mk. 13:44.

Hard though that is for some of us to admit, once born again and redeemed, it means that God through Jesus bought and paid for us and we belong to Him. Our life is no longer our own to live as we please and our destiny is His hands. At this time the story of Jonah is appropriate, teaching that sincere repentance can reverse even the harshest heavenly decreeand the prevention of Jonah’s flight shows that no one can escape from God.There is such an abundance of revelatory instruction around the 7th appointed time, it is prohibitive to attempt to include everything in one post, so some aspects are not mentioned below due to space and in an attempt to curtail longevity, however it is not out of ignorance or neglect.

(Further details regarding insights on the sacrifices and Temple proceedings followed at Yom Kippur will be posted on more mini manna moments/ deeper dig.)

Now for the Main Meal of the day! Yom Kippur – Day of Atonement (Lev. 25:9)

The Biblical name for the day of Atonement is Yom HaKippurim, meaning ‘the day of covering, canceling, pardon, reconciling.’ Occasionally, it was called ‘the Day of the Fast’ or ‘the Great Fast’ (Lev. 23:27-31; 16:29-34). It is a unique ceremony which took place on the ancient Hebrew calendar for the children of Israel, it was the holiest day of the year and still is for believers and the Jewish community today. ‘Kadosh’, often translated as ‘Holy’, it also has a deeper meaning and conveys an understanding of being separate and set aside for Adonai /The Lord and not as the world and the things of the world are.Deut. 7:6, We are to be His own unique treasure.

This day marks the end of the Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe) and falls on the 9th/10th day of Tishrei (Tishri), the seventh month in the Jewish calendar. It’s not a feast like the others that we have looked at. It is a day of repentance and it’s still of great significance for Christian believers, because not one of us is perfect.  It’s a time for us to make a decision to be better in the coming year than we were in the past year. Paul makes mention of Yom Kippur when he refers to it in Acts 27:9 saying that the fast had already gone by, as the main focus of this day is to fast before the Lord.Names used are:

Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement)

Face to Face
The Day (or the Great Day)
The Fast
The Great Shofar (Shofar HaGadol)
Neilah (the closing of the gates of heaven as the festival concludes and the judgment was set for another year.)

UNDERSTANDING THE PRIESTLY SERVICE FOR YOM KIPPURLev. 16, specifies the 10th of Tishrei as the date on which the high priest (Cohen HaGadol) shall conduct a special ceremony to purge defilement from the sanctuary and from the people. The heart of it is that the high priest (Cohen HaGadol) shall bring a bull and two goats as a special offering. First, the bull is sacrificed to purge the sanctuary from any defilements caused by misdeeds of the priest himself and of his household (Lev. 16:6). Secondly, one of the goats is chosen by lot to be sacrificed, to purge the sanctuary of any similar defilement stimulated by misdeeds of the whole Israelite people (Lev. 16:7-8). Finally, the second goat is sent away, not sacrificed, to cleanse the people themselves. The goat is marked for Azazel and is sent away to wander in the wilderness (Lev. 16:10).Before the goat is sent out, the high priest lays both his hands upon its head and confesses over it all the iniquities and transgressions of the Israelites, whatever their misdeeds, and so putting them on the head of the goat. Thus, the Torah adds, ‘The goat shall carry on it all their iniquities to an inaccessible region…’ (Lev. 16:20- 22).

AZAZEL: THE SCAPEGOAT

The Hebrew word for scapegoat is ‘Azazel’. Azazel was seen as a type of satan (Ha satan). The sins of the people and thus the punishment of the people were laid upon Azazel the scapegoat. Azazel being sent into the wilderness is understood to be a picture of satan (Ha satan) being cast into the lake of fire (Rev.19:20).The sins of the people were laid upon the scapegoat (Lev.16:21-22).

ADDITIONAL ASPECTS TO THE HIGH PRIEST CEREMONY

In order to enter the Holy of Holies, the high priest (Cohen HaGadol) was first to bathe his entire body, going beyond the mere washing of hands and feet as required by other occasions. The washing symbolized his desire for purification (Num. 19). The washing was of his clothes and his flesh (Num. 8:5-7;19:7-9).

This was done in conjunction with taking the blood of an animal with the finger
and sprinkling the blood upon the altar (Num. 19:1-4; Lev. 8:13-15 and in Num. 31:21-24.)

‘And the priest shall take of the blood thereof with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering.’

The priest dipping his finger in the blood and placing it on the horns of the altar represents that the sin is recorded. The mark of a finger print in blood is evidence a death had taken place to pay the price for the sin.By this action, the altar had in a sense, become defiled until on the Day of Atonement when the pure blood of the Lord’s goat was placed on the altar to purify it.

The blood is shed for the sinner’s life and to satisfy the demand of the law, on the Day of Atonement the redemption is finalized. So too, is the process in the heavenly sanctuary on the day when our sins are blotted out.

The spiritual understanding of this is given in Heb. 9 -10:19-22.
The sprinkling of blood upon the altar is also mentioned in Ex. 29:1-4,10-12, 16,20-21; and Lev. 1:3-5,11; 3:1-2,8; 4:1-6; 5:4-6,9. The spiritual understanding is found in Heb. 9:11-14,23-25, and 1Pet. 1:2.

FACE TO FACE

The high priest (Cohen HaGadol) could only go into the Holy of Holies once a year (Lev.16:2; Heb. 9:6-7).(God issued a warning that no man could see His face and live (Ex.33:20). But because on the Day of Atonement the priest could be in God’s presence (Lev.16:2), another term for the Day of Atonement is ‘face to face.’  At that point, the high priest was ‘face to face with the mercy seat of God.’

Face in Hebrew: panim or paneh פָּנִים (paw-neem’)When the high priest (Cohen HaGadol) entered the Holy of Holies, he saw the Lord’s presence as a brilliant cloud hovering above the mercy seat (Lev.16:2).The word for mercy seat in Hebrew is kapporet. It comes from the root word kaphar, which is the same word used for atonement. The mercy seat can also be translated as the seat of atonement. The mercy seat is described in detail in Ex. 25:17-22 and 37:6-9. This is the place where Moses (Moshe) met and spoke with God face to face (Ex. 25:22; 30:6; Num. 7:89).The themes are:

Yom Kippur is a day of fasting and affliction of the soul.

The incense of the golden censer represents the prayers of Bible believers.Repentance Repent (Teshuvah) return to the Lord.

Hear (Shema) the calling (Shofar) for our lives.

Yielding ourselves to God so we may live every day (face to face – al paneh – פָּנִים) in His Presence. Furniture of the Tabernacle

Atonement

At the moment the atonement was made on the Day of Atonement, those being atoned for were sinless and blameless before God.

The congregation of believers (kehilat) in the Messiah is being presented before God without spot or blemish (Eph. 5:27) because of the blood of Jesus/Yeshua (1 Pet. 1:19).Messianic Fulfillment; Jesus/Yeshua is the sacrifice of God for us who believe on Him (Heb. 9:26-28; 10:1-10).

Forgiveness

Messianic Fulfillment: Aaron the high priest typifies the ministry of mediator and intercessor. Jesus/Yeshua is our High Priest (Heb. 3:1) and Mediator (1 Tim. 2:5; Heb. 12:24). He lives to make intercession for us (Rom. 8:34; Heb. 7:22-27).Spiritual Application (Halacha): By the death of Jesus/Yeshua, we are free to enter into the veil every day not just once a year. (Matt. 27:50-51; 2 Cor. 3:14; Heb. 4:16; 6:13-19; 10:19-22).

 More about the Goats

Lev. 16:7–10. the high priest would stand before the people in Jerusalem with two identical goats. He would then put his hand into an urn where there were two lots, each one with a different Hebrew word carved into it. The High priest would then remove them both, one in each hand. He then placed the lot in his right hand on the head of the goat to his right the other to the goat on the left. One of the lots decreed that one of the goats would live and be set free, the other that it would die as the sacrifice for the sins of the people on Yom Kippur.  This is where two goats (or lambs) were chosen annually to represent the sins of Israel, one was sacrificed as the usual sin offering and the other released into the wild, bearing the sins of the people on it.The fate of each goat was determined by the drawing of the lots. The black lot signifying the scapegoat and the white lot, the goat for sacrifice. When the lots were drawn, if the black stone was found in the priest’s left hand when the stones were revealed it was an indication that the offering was unacceptable to the Lord. White meant yes, black meant no.

The Mystery of the Semikhah

Within this ceremony is also the mystery of the Semikhah. This is the sacred act that had to take place before a sacrifice could be offered up for the sins of the one offering it, or before the scapegoat could take away the sins of the nation on Yom Kippur.

It is the mystery of physical contact.

The person offering the sacrifice had to make physical contact with the sacrifice itself.

The priest had to touch it and very specifically had to place the palms of both his hands on the sacrifice.Lev. 16:21, Only after the Semikhah was performed could the scapegoat take away the sins of the nation or the sacrifice be offered up as an atonement.

The mystery is the Messiah. He is the sacrifice.

As the Semikhah must be performed and it was the priests who offered Him up and then delivered Him to His death. In accordance with Scripture, the priest had to make physical contact with the sacrifice by placing his hands on it. Mk. 14:65 records that after condemning Him to death the priests struck Him repeatedly with their hands. The description shows that they specifically struck his face and head the palms of their hands and afterwards Messiah was led away to be killed. What we need to comprehend is that what took place on earth at that moment, was symbolic of what happened in heavenly realms. That is where the reality and sovereignty of God’s intervention took place concerning the fate of mankind. In truth, it was God who performed the Semikhah when He placed our sins on Jesus, ensuring that sins are gone, Semikhah was completed and those sins can never return!

MESSIANIC UNDERSTANDING

God gave this ceremony of the casting of lots during Yom Kippur to teach us how He will judge the nations of the world prior to the Messianic age known as the Millennium. The nations of the world will be judged according to how they treated the Jewish people. Those nations who mistreated the Jews will be goat nations and they will go into the left hand. Those nations that stood beside the Jewish people will be sheep nations and will enter into the Messianic kingdom or the Millennium. Matt. 25:31-46.
Jesus/Yeshua during His first coming was a type of the goat marked La Adonai. He was a sin offering to us as God laid upon Him the sins of the whole world (Is. 53:1-6; 1 Cor. 15:3; Gal. 1:3-4; Heb. 2:17; 1 Jn. 2:2; 4:10).

In the ceremony of the two goats, the two goats were considered as one offering. A crimson sash was tied around the horns of the goat marked Azazel. At the appropriate time, the goat was led to a steep cliff in the wilderness and pushed off the cliff.  Before there could be any sacrifice, there had to be a public presentation of the two goats before the people and the decision of which destiny would be for each goat. In the life of Messiah before his sacrificial death at Passover He too was presented before the people by pilate. For them to choose which man would live and which would die. With the goats only one could become the sacrifice, so Messiah had to be one of two lives presented to the people in order to be chosen as the sacrifice. According to the Yom Kippur decree and the requirements of the ceremony, the other life had to be let go and his name was Barabbas. Matt. 27:15–24

They had to be identical but how could that have been true? Barabbas was a sinner, bandit and murderer Jesus was sinless.

It’s all in the name.

Jesus our Messiah was also the Son of God, the Son of the Father and Barabbas name in Aramaic comes from two words. Bar which means Son and Abba which means father so therefore Barabbas means son of the father. The two men each bearing the same name son of the father. So the one who was the sacrifice and the one set free were identical in this way. Similarly, as we believe Jesus was the son of God, He was also equal to God; then it would follow that God in the flesh had to die in our place and have an equality in some way with us. (John14:9, If you have seen me you have seen the father.) He did become flesh in the form of a man, in the ‘likeness’ of sinful flesh and as such was ‘identical’ to fulfill the law.Bar Abba (Barabbas) was a symbol of the disobedient nation of Yisra’el, and he was released from prison even though he was guilty. But our Messiah, Jesus was killed in his place, because He became the scapegoat for Yisra’el!The definition for the word ‘scapegoat’ is ‘the innocent party who takes the blame for the guilty party.’ The nation of Israel/Yisra’el, (the firstborn son) was the guilty party, but the Father put on human flesh and became the Son (representing Israel/Yisra’el) by trading places with him!

(This is where we get our idiom for a scapegoat, for the one who takes the blame.)

Messiah fulfilled the pattern of the twin goats on Yom Kippur and then he also fulfilled the role of the Kohen Gadowl (High Priest) that year when He read Is.61:1-2 in the synagogue (Lk. 4:19) declaring the acceptable year of The Lord.”
We are not under the law of sin and death any more we are under the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus. Rom.8:2

Because of the sovereign purposes of the Lord, Israel has undergone a partial hardening until all of those whom God has called from among nations have been grafted in to the Olive tree of God. During this age of grace, those who were called not my people, are intended to provoke Israel to jealousy by means of the message. (Hos. 2:23) After the age of grace is complete all Israel will be saved (Rom. 11:26) and the original covenant will be fully restored and redeemed. Yom Kippur will be a fulfilled festival on that great day. Then the words of the prophets will be proven true and God will be vindicated. Israel will be adorned with honor and blessing above all the nations of the earth and they will finally be home from their long exile.

The aspect of ‘hidden, covered, veiled.’ We see ‘Yom Kippur’ typology here with the concept of being ‘covered’ or ‘veiled.’ To this day, the Jewish people have nick-named this day of ‘Yom Kippur’ as ‘face-to-face’ because it was this one time per year when the High Priest would go into the Holy of Holies ‘behind the veil’ and come ‘face-to-face’ with The Lord!As the High Priest had to intercede on behalf of Israel/Yisra’el for her sins, if he had any sin for which he had not repented, he would die in the Holy of Holies! At the future Day of Atonement, the bride who sufficiently sanctifies herself or ‘afflicts’ and prepares herself will be able to come ‘face-to-face’ with the bridegroom. Likewise on that day when Jesus returns, the veil will be removed from her face and her heart (Israel) and she will ‘see’ her Messiah (2 Cor. 3:14-16). The scales will fall away from her eyes also as she will ‘look upon’ the one whom she pierced (Zech. 12:10).

In the future, during the ‘Ten Days of Awe’ between The Feast of Trumpets & the Day of Atonement, there will also be a ‘7-day’ wedding for the bride of Messiah.

Through Yeshua  the atonement has been made, not just for a year but forever; not just for Israel but for all who will believe.  We have been and will always be forgiven by God’s grace through faith. Jesus is not still on the cross however
because of Jesus who is the heart and prophetic fulfillment of every one of God’s holy days. These are His feasts, the feasts of the Lord. Because God chose Israel to be His witness to the rest of the world, the celebrations commemorate events in Israel’s history.  Through them God revealed His character and His plan of redemption through Jesus.

So the Feasts are continual reminders of God’s faithfulness and goodness.  They connect us together as a community and are anchors of our souls.

The ultimate fulfillment of the year of Jubilee will take place at the second coming of Messiah. The earth will be redeemed and come into full and complete rest from the curse brought upon it by Adam’s sin. Complete restoration of man’s lost inheritance will take place. God’s people will be totally set free — set at liberty, from all sin, sickness and disease, death, and the curse. Satan (Ha satan), the source of all these things, will be bound and true rest, true shalom will be realized. The tabernacle of God will be with men and He will dwell with them (Rev.21:1-4). So, the day of Atonement speaks of the fullness of the redemptive plan of God for man.We do well to remember, liberty and freedom are NEVER really free.

Somewhere – sometime – someone...

has ALWAYS paid the price for that freedom. It would behoove us to count the cost now, today – for there will be no avoiding the inevitable day of reckoning.
