Disciples Divine Design – Moadiym

The Moedim are:

the Appointed Times of the Lord

or also called

The 7 Feasts.

They can also be seen as

The Divine Design for Discipleship,

simply because they are an annual cyclical sequence of reminders to aid the observers to keep moving forward on the straight and narrow WAY.

These times are much more than an opportunity to focus on the Hebraic roots of our faith and beliefs. They are more than simply days to think on the prophetic meanings without physical participation, even though they are essentially fulfilled through Jesus/Yeshua’s Life, death and resurrection.

These Moadiym/Moedim, offer great spiritual insight and give us a unique opportunity for being discipled by His Holy Spirit/Ruach haKodesh; as we walk in the WAY of His Son, ever moving towards realizing our full potential and servant-hood for our Heavenly Father.

As we spend time learning their meaning in light of Jesus/ Yeshua and then living out the fullness of each of the Moedim as it relates to a disciples lifestyle; believers in Messiah will draw closer to Him and in that personal and intimate relationship, will become that much more effective and victorious. (Living a life of victory for and in Yeshua/Jesus.)

Sukkot (Hebrew: סוכות ‎ or סֻכּוֹת Hebrew pronunciation: , sukkōt; traditional Ashkenazi spelling: Sukkos/Succos),

commonly called the Feast of Tabernacles or in some translations the Festival of Shelters, and known also as the

Feast of Ingathering

(חג האסיף, Chag HaAsif),

Sukkot at the Western (Wailing) Wall, Israel.

It is a biblical Jewish holiday celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh month, Tishrei (varies from late September to late October). (October 2-9, 2020) one of the three biblically based pilgrimage holidays (chaggim or regalim) of the year.

It is the time to give thanks and appreciate the shelters of our homes and bodies as Sukkot is a hut-like structure in which the children of Israels lived when they were traveling during 40 wilderness years.

While walking through the seasons and the corresponding Moedim each year, we must allow His spirit/ruach to sow into us the deep truths that each Moed is designed to help us remember, integrating the revelations into our understanding and spiritual perception.

The end goal being, that our Heavenly Father may gather in a great harvest through us, for His glory and to lift up His Name and the Name of His Son Jesus/Yeshua, our Savior and soon returning King.

Why observe and why bother with these old testament feasts?

One good reason is the root of the words disciple, which is discipline. Paul is the great example, 

1Corinthians 9:24. 

But what made him so effective? Discipline! And the fact that he was successful because he understood the importance of submission to the Lord.

We are well aware that discipline is the key to perseverance, yet many times we allow our flesh to determine our tolerance level. If we submit to fathers discipline as Yeshua/Jesus did…

..rather than what we think we are able to endure, it teaches us our true potential and everything becomes less of an overwhelming mountain. Then we can run the race, however if we refused to submit to the discipline of our heavenly father – the race makes us – So we need His discipline to become His disciples and run to win on the straight and narrow way; leaving the flesh in the dust that it was formed from and will one day return to.

Yom Kippur just past as an appointed time of meeting with God.

The day of atonement –

at one ment

– is not so much a feast day as others but rather a day of

repentance/teshuvah.

It is significant to all, not just for Israel.

Paul refers to it

Saying the fast had already gone by.

in Acts. 27:9

It is a time for thinking,

assessing,

keeping the flesh and its desires under.

We are not perfect and all of us are working out our salvation. Walking daily in repentance and forgiveness in newness of life dealing with daily sin as it becomes an issue, thoughts attitudes etc..

We need to vow each year to be better than the year just passed.

It is the one day a year the High Priest enters into the Holy of Holies where the ark is, to take the blood of the sacrifice and place it on the Mercy seat Kapporet/ lid of the ark, between the cherubim, where rested the presence of God/the throne of His presence.. Leviticus 23:26 – 32

This action was to atone for his and the people sins. The High Priest wore all the symbolic clothing and the light of God’s Shekinah filled the Holy of Holies where there was no other source of light. Hebrews 9:24 Jesus/Yeshua became our High Priest; Hebrews 6:20, when He presented Himself to the Father. He told Mary I have not yet ascended to My Father don’t touch Me. (This may have been because it would’ve caused uncleanness before He ascended?) The real ark/ mercy seat/ throne/ His presence – is in the heavenlies/ha shamayim. And Yeshua/Jesus’ blood paid the price for all time. Hebrews 3:1; 2:14; 4:14; 5:9; 9:7; 9:11.

To be a propitiation means to be the agent through whom forgiveness and atonement can be achieved.

Yom Ha Kipuriym – Day of the Atonements.

It is the holiest day on Israel’s calendar perhaps even surpassing the 7th day Shabbat.. Like the 7th day, Yom Ha Kipuriym is designated a Shabbat Shabbaton. This means it is a day to stop from all kinds of work and to rest completely once a year and begins the evening before at sundown.

Not primarily a feast because it is a day to deny self or afflict ones soul. As the High Priest performs the atonement for himself, the altar, the Tabernacle and the whole community of Israel; the people participate through their non participation! Not only are they not to come near the Holy place on this day but are to deny their own existence. They are in essence – to: stop being. By not even giving in to themselves for basic needs such as food and water.

Like Passover/Pesach, many scholars agree that Yom Ha Kipuriym find it’s clear fulfillment in Jesus/Yeshua as He is both High Priest and our sacrifice. He atoned for us once and for all and is continually making intercession for us before the Father

Intercession is more than prayer:

It is entering in and making a difference in someone’s life.

In Greek it is ENTUGCHANO, meaning to petition or to intercede.

The act of intervening or mediating between differing parties; particularly the act of praying to God on behalf of another person.

In Hebrew: PAGA – פָגַע. – paw-gah’. 

A primitive root; to impinge, by accident or violence, or (figuratively) by importunity — come (betwixt), cause to entreat, fall (upon), make intercession, intercessor, to meet, encounter, reach.

Intercession is prayer that pleads with God for your needs and the needs of others. But it is also much more than that. Intercession involves taking hold of God’s will and refusing to let go until His will comes to pass. Intercession is warfare  fighting the good fight of FAITH– the key to God’s battle plan for our lives.

He does not need to make sacrifices for Himself and for us year after year in order to atone for our sins.

It is already been accomplished forever.

Our self denial on this day therefore does not cause, aid or enhance our atonement but allows us to become acutely aware of our own mortality, our sin, our need for atonement and our desire for life. At the same time it causes us to appreciate on some very tiny level the sacrifice Messiah made on our half as He denied His own life. The sanctity and holiness of this day cannot be overstated.

Though we may find great joy in our eternal atonement in Messiah Yeshua, this is a day for remembering that atonement (at one ment) in such a way that will be very hard to forget. We ought to be completive, repentant, humble and dead/ die to self. We are to remember that we live and breathe only because the Father chooses. And that by His choice, He has the power to take it away as well.

These are the themes to think on, that without Messiah, we are truly hopeless, without hope, truly dead,

but

through His atoning blood and intercession

we are truly alive forevermore.

Five days after Yom Ha Kipuriym on the 15th day Office seventh month for seven days is the feast of the tabernacles Chag ha Sukot . (Leviticus 23:33-36, 39; 40-43)

Also called Chag ha Asif – feast of the ingathering….

Why?

Because it occurs at the outgoing of the year when you gather in the fruit of your labor from the field. Lev.23:16

Like the feast of Matzah (unleavened bread), Sukot (Sukkot) lasts for seven days and is a time of great celebration. It is different to Matzah in the way that only the first day of Sukot is a holy convocation. On this day Israel is commanded to do no regular work and to rest.

The main focus is the SUKAH – booth or tabernacle, constructed from various trees and flora from around Jerusalem. This is to remind the Israelites that brought them out of Egypt.

The spiritual significance is of

divine protection,

deliverance and

provision.

The temporary and flimsy construction of the SUKAH reminds us of our own weakness, fragile and temporary condition of our physical bodies that we dwell in on earth.

It is also symbolic of how Adonai

cares for us,

shades us, and

hides us from the elements that focus on our destruction.

(Those that would seek to steal, kill & destroy, prince of the power of the air)

At the time of the final ingathering we are to celebrate with overwhelming joyfulness that:

1. He has delivered us.

2. Watched over us.

3. Will soon be taking us to dwell permanently with Him in the SUKAH that will have no end.

The seventh day became known as

Hashanna Rabba

and was celebrated with a huge water libation ceremony to ask for abundant rain over the coming season.

The Eighth Day assembly.

In the scriptures: Leviticus 23: 36, 40. Nehemiah 8:14. 

it is written that this is to be observed

On the 22nd day of the seventh month.

The 7 day Sukot is the last moed of the year.

Yom HaShmiyniy Atzaret – The 8th day assembly.

The commands for this day are simply:

do no regular work, rest and assemble together.

It is a time to say goodbye to Sukot and the past years moedim/moadiym.

It is time to rest and reflect

but also a time to look forward to the future

because in six months time,

the cycle of life and annual rehearsal for the ultimate wedding of all time begins again.

Though this moed is often deemed insignificant or instead celebrated as Simchat Torah (Joy of the Torah) which is an extra biblical Jewish holiday; it can also be very meaningful as we look back at the journey along the WAY that we have just completed.

The cycle of life that has come full circle and also to look forward to the new one that lies ahead.

Messiah fulfilled an intermediate fulfillment of all three Fall Feasts at His first coming:

1.) Announcement: Yom Teruw’ah, ushering in the King.

2.) Circumcision: Yom Kippur, removal of the veil (foreskin) called “face-to-face.”

3.) Dwelling with us: Sukkot; dwelt with us in a corruptible body.

John 1:14. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among & we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth.

If Jesus/Yeshua was born on the 1st day of Sukkot, the 15th day of the 7th month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the Lord?  Lev.23:34,

Then He would have been circumcised on the eighth great day – a festival following sukkot,

Shemini Atsaret – Eighth Day of Solemn Assembly

is a festival observed immediately after Sukkot Tabernacles,

i.e. on 22nd Tishrei (the seventh month) Luke 9:23

Messiah will fulfill all three Fall Feasts at His second coming: 

1.) Husband Ushering in the Bride: Yom Teruw’ah.

2.) Husband removes veil from the bride’s face: Yom Kippur.

3.) Husband consummates the marriage with the 4th cup: Sukkot; Dwells with bride for 1,000 years of Sabbath rest.

Remember Hebrew reads from right to left.

This characteristic is one of the most important traits that a follower of Jesus/Yeshua can have. Sadly, it was one of the things that the children of Israel constantly failed at because they kept turning away from The Lord to other gods/idols and because of the marriage covenant made at Sinai, their lifestyle became the same as a spouse committing adultery, breaking vows and being unfaithful.

Shavuot/Pentecost is the Appointed Time of Remembering that wonderful promise of the Father as He made the children of Israel His Bride, betrothing Himself to them and the giving of Torah.

When people assign the attribute of faithfulness to others it is a positive and encouraging one.

In Prov. 22:1 we are told that to be known as a person of integrity is worth more than silver or gold.

A good name [earned by honorable behavior, godly wisdom, moral courage, and personal integrity] is more desirable than great riches; And favor is better than silver and gold. AMPC

“They [the words of God] are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold” (Psalm 19:10).

As we are to seek a good name instead of riches, so we are also to seek loving favor over riches. There is no better way to garner loving favor than to have a good name and people will love and gravitate towards us for having integrity and being faithful.

Scripture firmly establishes the faithfulness of our Heavenly Father.

1Thess. 5:24. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.

 1 Corinthians 1:9. God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

Psalms 119:90  Your faithfulness endures to all generations;  you have established the earth, and it stands fast. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

2 Chronicles 34:12 faithful workers.

It is interesting to note God does not use this term liberally in the scriptures or say people are faithful too often, it is reserved for only a few. Because of this we must understand it is very highly valued in His eyes and as such, is no doubt the reason why He was so upset with the children of Israel/His people when they kept going astray and being unfaithful to Him.

To be proclaimed a faithful servant by the King of the Universe Melekh HaOlam, is almost beyond words let alone our understanding;

so much so, that we need to take more than a quick glance at the statement.

Numbers 12:7
My servant Moses is not so, who is FAITHFUL in all mine house.

Moses is one of the few and of course Jesus/Yeshua, who He is both pleased with and Yeshua/Jesus is also called a prophet like unto Moses.

Deuteronomy 18:15
The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

There is a principle applied to the interpretation of the Scriptures that is called the Law of First Mention.

This term means the literal first mention of a word, theme, teaching, topic or doctrine, will then always connect it to the mind of the Lord in any future mention of the same theme, topic or word.

In Scripture, where there is the first mention of a word, it takes on special significance as it discloses God’s initial and primary intended meaning/focus of that theme and therefore it needs to be considered as a primary/1st witness whenever the word occurs elsewhere in the text.

Here there is another first mention concerning one who is to come. It is called a type or a shadow, of which there are many in the old testament scriptures.

Paul echoed this prophetic statement confirming its fulfillment in Hebrews 3:1-5:

 

Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.
And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;

 And also in

Acts 3:22
For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.

As we read again the first mention of the Hebrew word Faithful we know that over the millennia meanings of words change and also take on other attributes. To find out what Yahweh (or Yehoveh/ YHWH/ YHVH), means we can look at some of the earliest recorded script available, pictographs, to see if maybe there are details hidden in the pictures and meanings for the letters of the word. 

The first point to aid in understanding this hidden meaning is to recall that Moses was a shadow/type of the coming Messiah as recorded in the prophetic text of

Deuteronomy 18:15
The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

When we follow these scripture verses, like the bread crumbs of His manna, (provision to eat and stay alive and thrive), through the scriptures, we will always find they lead us to the Messiah,

THE Bread of Life.

Messiah who said He was the Bread which came down from Heaven the Bread of Life/Chaim. Just as in the wilderness, for Moses and the Israelites, the manna came down from heaven (provision to eat and stay alive and thrive),

Jesus the Messiah/Yeshua Ha-Mashiach is hidden right in front of our eyes in the concepts of the pictographs for the three letters Aleph, Mem and Noon that make up the Hebrew word which is translated as FAITHFUL in both English and Hebrew.

Some DEFINITIONS:

The Word ‘Faith’ In Hebrew:

emuwn – trustworthiness; faithful.

emuwnah- honesty; truth; faithfulness; firmness; official obligation.

The first time this word is used in the text is found in Exodus 17:12: “But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side.

In the New Testament the adjective “faithful” is a derivative of the Greek noun meaning “faith.” Here we get the translation “faithful” as a natural derivative of faith. Once again the fundamental meaning is that the one so described is trustworthy and loyal. The root idea is that one has fidelity toward another person or toward God.

The Hebrew root word for faithful includes the idea of confirmation or proof. God always proves to be reliable when it comes to His relationship with us. The Bible verse in which this name of God appears links the name to God’s covenant reliability.

The meaning is trusty or reliable. The only two other occasions it appears in the Hebrew it is rendered faith or truth. A noun derived from ‘âman that occurs three times rendered faithful is ‘ĕmûnâh (H530).

The Hebrew word for faith is אמונה (emunah – Strong’s #530) and is an action oriented word meaning “support”. This is important because the Western concept of faith places the action on the one you have faith in, such as “faith in God”. But, the Hebrew word אמונה places the action on the one who “supports God”.

based on past word studies, we’re already aware that we are dealing with the ideal meaning of the letter. Because the context of the verse is about Faithfulness it is fairly clear that God the Father is the ideal picture of Faithfulness.

Removing some of the possible meanings, which seem obvious from the context of the scripture that they do not refer to a Tsunami, Flood Waters nor Chaos or Confusion.

The reference sounds like it’s about Moses but recall that Moses is just a shadow of the individual really being alluded to.

 

NUN/NOON

seed – life – continuity.

Taking a fresh look in John 6:26 where there is an account recorded in Jesus/Yeshua’s ministry, it’s one we all know well; the feeding of 5000 with 2 loaves and 5 fish!

And then read what He said the very next day to that very same group of people.

Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

The Messianic significance of Manna doesn’t need any clarification.

Then immediately after miraculously feeding 5000 men, (women and children numbers not included!) the same unbelieving Jews that had partaken of the miraculous feast, surrounded Messiah in order to ask Him this ..

What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

Showing they had no comprehension whatsoever. They did not understand that Jesus/Yeshua was speaking of spiritual matters and it was an invitation to all who heard to enter into a relationship with Him that would result in eternal life. Sadly all they were looking for was unlimited free-meals. 

This is when Jesus/Yeshua makes the connection between the true Manna that comes from heaven and Himself.

John 6:35-36

 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

Why did He use the word manna to refer to himself?

 Usually we hear it said that manna translates as “WHAT IS IT?”

We spell or write it as Manna. 

The Hebrew letters used are MN – Mem and Nun once again the meanings are the fish, seed, life and water.

There seems to be a the direct connection between Manna, the bread that came down from heaven, and the last two letters in the Hebrew word Faithful because the last two letters in the word Faithful are the two letters Mem Noon, the word for Manna.

Looking carefully at the words He said to them

recorded in John 6:32 and add in the hebrew letters alef mem nun

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my

Father

giveth you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven

and giveth life  unto the world.

Here is the meaning to the hidden puzzle we are meant to find when we read the first mention of Faithful.

John 6:35
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

The Manna that first descended from Heaven to earth was given a name with specific letters that would eventually open the door/dalet of understanding, revealing/apocalypse of a mystery. 

The One who came from Heaven has many names and He IS The true Manna.  Messiah, the Anointed One, Emmanuel, The Sinless, Spotless Lamb of God, also called Faithful and True in

Revelation 19:11a
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True,

Another fact that cannot be ignored is in Revelation 3:14
Messiah’s Name is also AMEN

And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the AMEN, the FAITHFUL and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

Recall this first use of the Hebrew word Faithful had the shadow of another One who was even more faithful than Moses in view. The One to come

in Deuteronomy 18:15 Moses says prophetically that God is going to raise up another prophet who is greater than himself who the children of Israel should listen to:

Shadow is revealed by Apostle Paul to be Yeshua Ha-Maschiach

Then in Hebrews 3:1-5. Paul tells us who that Prophet is none other than Jesus the Christ /Yeshua Ha-Mashiach.

Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.
And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;

In John 6:32 He reveals what the word faithful truly means and we can insert the Hebrew letters here too.

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my

Father  

giveth you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is he which cometh down from

heaven

and giveth life  unto the world.

So the sum of this is He is the one that the Heavenly Father sent down from Heaven to give us eternal life. Jesus/Yeshua is that Manna sent from the Father. Jesus/Yeshua is the bread of life and Jesus/Yeshua is revealing He is literally faithful, not simply an attribute He IS Faithful. This is possible because the word FAITHFUL is used only one time in the entire Scripture as a personal pronoun. 

And because of the principle regarding the order of first mention spoken of earlier, which applies in all languages including the Hebrew, Greek, and English language, that means all other times the word is mentioned as a noun or adjective, the first mention supersedes them. Here is why we need to study to show ourselves approved unto the Lord… its only by digging for the pearls and treasures that we will find those truths that make us say WOW! (Worthy Of Worship!) and when His light shines on a verse making it even more precious we see with clear vision there is always more to the Word of God.

By comparison to our faithful Heavenly Father who sent His faithful Son to accomplish the salvation and deliverance of fallen, sinful man, everyone else pales in comparison. and all who are loyal, trustworthy and keep their words of promise cannot be compared to Him.

How is amen connected to faithful?

Its what we usually say at the end of a prayer. There are several opinions on its meaning.. some say its so be it as an affirmation and agreement to what has been voiced in the preceding prayer.

We have also heard and maybe thought it has no specific meaning or is an acrostic abbreviation. We are all learning and no one person knows everything so we add another pearl of knowledge and understanding as line upon line precept upon precept.

Hebrew word AMEN is found in the Greek and English translations of the New Testament 51 times.

Now we must ask ourselves, what are we declaring every time we say AMEN at the end of a prayer to our Heavenly Father? We are in truth, proclaiming the fulfillment of the very first prophecy ever given to humanity and we are declaring that our Heavenly Father is faithful to keep His promise of a Redeemer; that which was given to Eve after the Fall and eviction from the Garden of Eden/GanEden. This is celebrated every time we say AMEN because Jesus/Yeshua has fulfilled that promise.

Every time your spirit prompts you to say AMEN after receiving the words of life into your heart, we are proclaiming that our Faithful Heavenly Father sent His precious and only begotten Son from heaven to the earth in order to accomplish OUR Salvation.

Amen is the testimony that you have eternal life because

Yeshua became FAITHFUL.

The one name FAITHFUL and TRUE is only one sent from Heaven. He alone was given the power and authority to save humanity from the curse of sin and death and by the Faithful Spirit of Our Father, He freely gave the gift of Faith that guarantees eternal life, even though not one is deserving of such a gift.

Next time we read the word FAITHFUL it will take on a whole new meaning.

So what are we really saying?

the Hebrew word for AMEN is exactly the same word as the Hebrew word FAITHFUL; Aleph Mem Noon!

The word faithful in Hebrew pretty much means the same thing it does today. It describes someone who always does the right thing even when no one else is looking. This person will always be truthful and true. They’re filled with integrity and will hold up their end of the deal no matter the sacrifice.

The Lord is absolutely truthful and faithful.

It is derived from the Hebrew root having the basic meaning “to trust (a person),” or “to believe (a statement).”

This is the same root that gives us the word “amen.”

The derived meaning is that the one so described is trustworthy, dependable, trusting, or loyal. Moses was faithful in all God’s household (Numbers 12:7).

As well as being the Manna from Heaven

His Name is also Faithful

and Amen

And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True.

And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

No surprise then that Yeshua/Jesus asks the question

When the Son of Man returns will He find faith on the earth?

He was speaking of Faithfulness in all its fullness!

If we are true disciples we will remain faithful to the last. These are the disciples who have not compromised nor wandered off the straight and narrow path but with perseverance patience and long suffering stay in the WAY.

Faithful is He who called you.

This is the ideal expression of Our Heavenly Father and of the Son

Who also vows I will not leave you nor forsake you. Hebrews amp

Lets make sure we are in a position to hear those cherished words well done thou good and faithful servant/disciple enter thou into the joy of the Lord

Faithfulness – AMN – is without doubt the seal/trademark/quality/characteristic/hallmark of a Talmidim/Disciple who follows their Master;

What I Am Doing You Do Not Know Now But You Will Know Later. Part 2

At the end of Part 1 we were speaking of the bronze basin/laver in the Mishkan …

The bronze basin /laver stood near to the altar of sacrifice in the courtyard (Jesus/Yeshua being the sacrifice), and the priest would wash their hands and feet before ascending the altar to perform a sacrifice.

He was required to only wash hands and feet, the rest of the body being covered by the linen/righteousness the robes of office conferred.

These robes are now the robes of righteousness that we are clothed in as garments of salvation that all wedding guests must be wearing.

2Cor 5:21 Christ took all our sin and guilt; we received His perfect righteousness, in right standing … We stand before a Holy God dressed in robes of righteousness without spot or wrinkle.

Is 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

We see Joshua the High Priest clothed with robe of righteousness. Zec 3:1, 3-4: Behold, I have removed you iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.

The robe of righteousness is fine, LINEN, clean and bright, the robe which the entire Bride of Christ will be clothed with.

Rev 19:8: And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

His is dipped in blood…

Rev 19:13: And he was clothed with a robe dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

The atonement is for all the saints – all those who’ve been redeemed by the blood of the lamb.

The wrong garment means not washed/sanctified prior to putting on holy garments to minister before the Lord. Reference to the wedding guest wearing the wrong garment.

The high priest served the people before God.

Jesus/Yeshua served people before God as our

High Priest

and He was/is the agent of washing us clean.

Just as He as High Priest was washing Peter clean.

He fulfilled the need of the Brazen basin/laver in full washing to be made holy.

However, the Lord instructed Moses regarding the bronze washbasin/laver used by the priest during this service in the Mishkan. The washbasin stood near the altar of sacrifice in the courtyard and the priest washed their hands and feet before ascending the altar to perform a sacrifice.

(Who can ascend the hill of the Lord/holy of holies but he who has clean hands and a pure heart.)

The foundation of Gods throne/His presence, is repentance and judgment, righteousness and justice. It is not emotion, it is love which is truth, Messiah is the TRUTH.

John 14:9 KJV: Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that … If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also:

He was the express image of all that God has laid out in Scripture which spoke of Him the coming Messiah.

Be washed/sanctified before entering the kingdom of God and through Jesus the Door/dalet.

The Door of the sheep

The Laver was placed between the altar /repentance (where a death was demanded)

and the tabernacle/ the kingdom and that is the Lord.

By the spirit Jesus/Yeshua was giving Peter the message;

(washed [leloumenos, bathed] )

cleansing/washed/sanctification before performing the sacrifice and entering the presence of God.

The altar was His cross and the seed/Himself had to die to become alive/resurrection and the burial/ death in water /immersion and purification had to precede in its order of Gods pattern. 

Peters’ desire for Jesus/Yeshua to wash his hands and head also, John 13 :1– 18 and not only his feet is a reference to the role of the bronze laver/the wash basin in the Mishkan of which He was a type and shadow and Peter wanted to be completely Holy and prepared to minister and enter into the Holy place.

John the Baptist had also declared it ..

Repent – here is the altar or death to sin

And be baptized everyone of you – here is the laver

In the name of Jesus/Yeshua the anointed for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of Ruach HaKodesh.

Acts 2:38…

And following 50 days of omer, which is a time of preparation of inner self, to Shavuot/Pentecost and receiving the promise of His Ruach/Presence.

This Appointed Time of Shavuot, commemorated receiving the covenant of Marriage/Betrothal and the Torah/Word of God /Jesus/Yeshua Himself /His Ruach/Spirit descending to be with us forever in the sanctuary of our physical bodies and no longer in the Sanctuary/Temple which was the pattern of the Mishkan.

Remember the disciples were told to wait?….They were counting the Omer according to the Appointed times of the Lord..

We must be born of water and spirit before entering the tabernacle, the kingdom of God/kingdom of the heavens. John 3:5

Laver a place of cleansing – just as baptism was a place and act of repentance and cleansing from sin.

Ex 30:21 so shall they wash their hands and feet that they die not and it shall be a statute for ever to them even to him and to his seed throughout their generations.

There is room for everyone who will accept the High Priest Jesus/Yeshua by being born of water and spirit and be willing to come to the door/dalet of the tabernacle and then enter in.

A Robe of Righteousness was worn once a year into the Holy of Holies to place blood on the kapporet /seat of mercies. No shoes were worn, because the ground was Holy. The presence of the Lord was there so it became Holy ground, just as it was to Moses at the burning bush. Wherever His presence is, it becomes Holy.

Peter wanted his hands and head to be washed and sanctified in the sense of full purification and indeed it was coming.

Jesus/Yeshua was about to make the Way into the holy presence of the father by His own death, sacrifice for all, access through His blood. The forgiveness of sins taking His blood to the mercy seat in the kingdom of the Heavens.

The process God gave Moses, along with the format of the way to prepare to enter the presence of God, was the pattern and the only way, until Jesus/Yeshua came and said,

I Am the Way;

because He fulfilled the format/ Pattern given to Moses by His sacrificial death. And not only are we redeemed but we are sanctified made holy/set apart and therefore able to enter His presence. Relationship has been restored with our heavenly father, He was the restorer of the breach Isaiah.

For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” 6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant He mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. Heb. 8:7-12

Jesus saith to him, He that is

and ye are clean, but not all.

HERE we have the most significant point….because

Jesus/Yeshua used two different words, but both are translated by the English word wash.

In those days a person returning from one of the many public baths where he had bathed, got his feet defiled on the way from the bath house to his home. There was placed at the door of his home a basin to rinse the feet.

This had been omitted, for some reason, the night that the disciples entered the Upper Room.

Jesus/Yeshua arose, took the basin,

and began

to wash (niptein, to wash)

the disciples’ feet.

We know the atoning blood of Messiah cleanses from sin — all sin — and the sin of the saved souls is fully dealt with at the cross.

However we are still working out our salvation daily and daily have to deal with sin in a continual attitude of repentance. Just as the priests daily washed and cleansed themselves from sins using the Laver we are to cleanse ourselves in the Laver of Jesus/Yeshua coming to Him daily in repentance. Our past sin has been

washed [leloumenos, bathed

through His cleansing blood and through immersion we have been made Holy….

but sin in the believer breaks communion with God, and on the basis of His death, He can wash/ cleanse every child who comes to Him in repentant confession.

As the disciples placed their defiled feet in His hands for cleansing, today we come in confession of our sins and, by so doing,

place our soiled feet in the nail-pierced hands of our Savior who cleanses us from all defilement.

Fellowship is then restored with the Father.

On the way from the cross to the crown our feet get soiled, but if we confess our sins, He takes the basin and girds Himself with the LINEN/Righteousness, towel again, and cleanses us from all sin.

How humbling to know that our Lord is girded with a LINEN towel, and that with basin in hand He keeps us clean, if we place our feet in His hands by confessing our sins.

The laver spoke of this heavenly ministry of Messiah.

The laver stood between the altar and the Holy Place, where the curtain of separation was, the same that was rent at the time of His death.

The cleansing of believers by confession stands between the cross and the continual communion of the Father with His children.

The altar was for a sinner; the laver was for a sin.

The altar was where the sinner needed punishment;

The laver was where the child needed cleansing.

The altar spoke of blood; the laver spoke of water.

The altar suggests this verse of Scripture: “…Without shedding of blood is no remission” (Hebrews 9:22);

the laver points to this: “Without holiness no man shall see God.”

and the meaning of the laver as it dealt with the sin in the life of the believer.

This then contains a twofold application. The first applies to the earth and is the work of His Ruach HaKodesh/Holy Spirit. The second applies to heaven and is the WORK of the cross through Messiah and are both in relationship to the believer.

The brazen altar speaks of His death;

the brazen laver speaks of His resurrection.

At the brazen altar is forgiveness of sin;

at the brazen laver is imputation of righteousness,

“[Christ] was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our justification” (Romans 4:25).

Then only the priests had access to the Laver, whereas the bronze altar was accessible to all. According to scripture we are now priests so we have access to Jesus/Yeshua/The Laver.

 

There was cleansing by blood – pointing to justification and there was cleansing by water – pointing to sanctification.

The priests were obliged to wash their hands and their feet before entering God’s presence, to disobey would mean death (Ex.30:19-21).

Here Jesus/Yeshua was telling them He was making the WAY.

However looking a little deeper…reveals more amazing significance… 

 

There was no floor in the court or the tabernacle therefore the priests feet would be defiled by the constant contact with the earth and the hands by the work at the altar and other work. Therefore they had to wash before any ministry at the altar, to make them clean before communion with God and before service to man.

At their consecration the priests were washed all over at the Laver before being clothed with priestly garments and anointed (Exodus 29:4-7).

They did not wash themselves at their consecration, but were washed by someone else (Lev.8:6).

Just as Messiah washes us as we are consecrated to His service.

Leviticus 8:6). That washing was for all time.

It was never repeated (perhaps a symbol of baptism? Heb. 10:22) and afterwards the priests had to wash their own hands and feet as there was to be a continual and daily cleansing at the laver.

The blood of Christ cleanses the believing sinner from all sin, but in his daily walk and service he becomes defiled and needs cleansing. His Holy Spirit indwells each believer, but sin keeps His Ruach from helping us achieve our full potential. He reveals the pathway of victory and gives power to our lives when conditions are met.

The Laver was made from the freewill gift of bronze mirrors made by the women (Ex.38:8) and enabled the priests to see their reflection.

The thought of God’s word being a Laver is seen in the New Testament, when Paul in Ephesians 5:26 writes “that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word”(NASB).

The Greek word used there translated as washing is “loutron” which means Laver and is the Greek word used in the Septuagint for the Laver in the court of the tabernacle. If in the passage we were to put the word Laver it would read

“that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the Laver of water, with the word”.

This gives the real insight of the verse,

a standing in the place of sanctification

that comes through the word of God.

For us it is through Yeshua/Jesus the Living Word.

The cleansing power of God’s word is also see in Psalm 119:9, John 15:3, 1 Peter 1:22. When we come to the Word of God, the Bible, so it is to us a mirror for our soul that will cleanse us if we are willing to apply its purifying water to our lives.

The Laver water was required also for the washing of the inward parts of the sacrifices (Lev.1:9,13) and so it is that our inner thoughts and motives need divine cleansing.

That cleansing washing was a prerequisite to entering into His presence, and still is now, we are cleansed and washed by the water of the word. Eph.5:26.

This is why it is important to read The WORD, it continually cleanses us, and remember when He spoke they only had the old Testament the new had not yet been written down.

Yeshua/Jesus is the living word and we are washed by Him and by the water of His words and by the blood of the lamb – the water and the blood.

As a nation of priests, a holy set apart nation into which we are grafted, whose hands and feet are washed. It is with clean hands and a pure heart that we are to ascend to the holy place, the hill of the Lord.

Peter would have understood the pattern of the Tabernacle given to Moses that they all followed and desired to be totally clean as that process required. He would understand later, post resurrection, that Jesus/Yeshua has fulfilled the laws of purification to completion. That no more sacrifice was needed and that He as our high priest, is able to wash, purify and cleanse us daily and then to clothe us with garments of salvation and a robe of righteousness.

This does not mean we have nothing to do, we are responsible to apply His word and keep His commandments and daily take up our cross, yoking ourselves with Jesus/Yeshua and crucifying the flesh, the natural desires.

Verse 8 He clearly tells us this is the only WAY we can be clean.

Unless I would wash you, you have no part with me!

And in verse 10

So He was saying you are ready to enter the holy place and as I wash your feet physically, the cross will make the WAY into His presence permanent.

Peter wanted to be clean by asking for his hands and head to be washed also in reference to the immersion for purification in preparation for them to enter the Holy place with their bodies as sanctuaries of the Holy Spirit.

(immersion for purification which is also called baptism; all of John’s and Jesus/Yeshua’s disciples were familiar with immersion which always followed repentance.)

The furniture found in the court, speak of an atoning sacrifice and of a cleansing as a preparation to enter into God’s presence. The same is true today to be able to come into God’s presence, to have a relationship with God we must identify ourselves with the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and be cleansed of the sin that makes the relationship with a holy God impossible.

V 10 is a ref to immersion for purification, which is also called baptism, in preparation for them to enter the Holy Place; with their bodies as sanctuaries of His Ruach HaKodesh/Holy Spirit. Immersion is the translation of both the

nothing but full-body immersion is intended

Flowing water had to be used for Immersion so it would come from sources such as a stream, spring or rainwater caught in a cistern. A mikveh which is for purification is where individual goes completely under the water 7x. (2Kings 5:10).

Most immersions were self-immersions, at the Jordan river John and his disciples would stand on the bank preaching, as people repented they would go into the river and immerse themselves with the one preaching still on the bank. Acts 2:14 – 42. As with Philip and the eunuch in Acts 8:38 some were immersed by others; on these occasions the person doing the immersing put a hand on the head of the one being immersed to hold them under the water; this forced a struggle to come up out of the water as a reminder of the dying to self and the new birth, symbolic of the struggle at birth by a newborn baby.

Around the city there were many mikvehs and the Temple in Jerusalem had multiple ritual baths where in Acts 2 it would only have taken about 20 minutes to immerse all 3000. In Jesus/Yeshua’s day each synagogue, had one or more ritual baths/immersion pools for immersion.

These were to be filled with living water from a stream, or even from a roof system to catch rainwater. In John 2:6 there is a reference to stone jars used to carry the water for purification. Normally only a synagogue would have a ritual bath so this wedding was apparently at a synagogue, which in Jesus/Yeshuas day were mostly home synagogues.

Stone was used because it does not become unclean, metal and glass containers become unclean but can be cleansed, when pottery vessels become unclean they have to be destroyed. The early ecclesia/church always immersed, sprinkling instead of immersion was made official at the Council of Ravenna in 1311 AD.

Hebrew uses the root “ṭaval/tabal” (טבל) for immersion

The Hebrew word for immersion is tevilah and means literally immersing in a ritual bath known as a mikvah.

 Immersion is the act of washing performed to correct a condition of ritual impurity and restore the impure to a state of ritual purity

285 years before John the Baptist was born the Old Hebrew Scriptures were translated into Greek; and in this translation there were two Hebrew words, “Rahats” and “Tabal,” that must be rendered into Greek, and they both signified the same thing—WASHING or PURIFICATION. With this difference: Rahats signified any washing in things of common life, while Tabal was never used in this sense at all, but to express only purification from sin.

It was a religious ordinance only; hence, these translators find Lono in Greek exactly answering to Rahats in Hebrew, and they substituted the one for the other; but when they look into the Greek for a word answering to “Tabal,” it is not there! 

Why? 

Because the Greeks were heathens, and they had no use for a word that expressed only a religious ordinance of purification from sin.

But the maintaining of that cleanness that is known as righteousness is the responsibility of every believer by the daily exercise of applying Gods word in everyday living, to keep our thoughts and motives pure.

Justification Continued at the Laver. Christ is faithful and just not only to forgive our sins but to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The only place where cleansing was done was at the laver. Immediately after the death of Christ (symbolized at the altar) were His burial and resurrection of which baptism is a memorial. Our burial in the water corresponds to the burial of Christ; our rising out of the water corresponds to His resurrection.

The water in the brazen Laver points to the believer judging himself, unsparingly, by that Word. The Laver of brass presents the inflexible righteousness of Christ/Messiah testing, judging His people, condemning that which mars their communion with God.

The Scriptures show us the only WAY to be clean, is through Jesus/Yeshua.

Let’s be like Peter, desiring Messiah to cleanse us so we can enter into His presence, by placing our soiled feet into His Hands.

For in reality He has washed our feet too just as much as He washed Peters. And He continues to wash them every time we judge ourselves and come before Him in repentance for sin. We are washed, immersion for purification, which is also called baptism; washed [leloumenos, bathed] 

needeth not save to

wash [nipsasthoi, to wash] 

his feet,

It gives another meaning to the scripture that He ever liveth to make intercession for us….not simply the meaning of intercession as prayer. We are to plunge ourselves daily beneath the cleaning flow of His blood and the washing of the water by the Word….

What He did we did not know then …but now it is later and we know!

Well, Well, Now Eye See

“Give Me a drink.” 

These words of Jesus/Yeshua are unusual as more often than not, He was the one doing the giving; however, after walking on a very long journey during the heat of the day, He was thirsty.

Around noon, He came to a well in a town named Sychar and it was in that ancient place that Jacob’s well had been dug some 2000 years prior. 

The town of Sychar, was probably on the site of the present-day town of Aschar, which is near the ancient ruins of Shechem. 

Tired and hot, Jesus/Yeshua sat down by that well.

Soon, a woman came to that same well.

Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her,

Give me to drink.

Interesting correlation?

Jesus/Yeshua says to her, give Me a drink, because He was thirsty. This is the same and only request that He had when He was on the cross, I thirst.  19:28.

Asking for a drink, is a natural enough request from a tired and thirsty traveler, who was resting by a well in the deserts of Palestine during the hottest part of the day. This request was for a simple act of kindness, or at least that is what we see on the surface of this meeting. However as we are finding out, the stories recorded in the gospels are far deeper than the well at Sychar.

John 4:10-15;  10. Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.  11. The woman said to Him, Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep.

Again it seems a natural and very practical observation on the part of the woman! Then He replies with an astounding statement!

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again. But no one who drinks the water I give will ever be thirsty again. The water I give is like a flowing fountain that gives eternal life.” The woman replied, “Sir, please give me a drink of that water! Then I won’t get thirsty and have to come to this well again.”

In John 4:14 Jesus/Yeshua said, The water that I shall give [you] will become in [you] a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.

Another translation says:

But everyone who shall drink of the waters that I will give him shall not thirst for eternity, but those waters that I give him shall be springs of waters in him that shall spring up into eternal life.

While preparing previous posts there seems to be a sort of connection to the Hebrew words for WELL and the Hebrew word for EYES; which led to further thoughts shared here purely for pondering purposes.

When we read the scriptures, we read the work of translators and scholars. They have transformed an ancient document, by substituting English words for the original Hebrew words. The problem is, many times the words are translated correctly, but the original Hebrew thought is lost. The words are there, but the meaning is missing. With that in mind we will explore a little further.

According to Strongs and the Hebrew lexicon, the word for eye, ayin, can also mean spring, as in a source of ground water.

עַיִן

AYIN means EYE in Hebrew, and we still retain an almost identical word for eye in the English.

As it also means fountain or spring, it is possibly because eyes well up with water/tears when irritated or the person is crying from sadness. The ancient letter AYIN was a picture of an EYE.

This letter represents the ideas of seeing and watching as well as knowledge, as the eye is the window of knowledge.

The letter Ayin is the 16th letter of the Aleph-Bet, having the numeric value of 70.

Pronounced ah yeen and like the alef it has no sound of its own but rather has a vowel connected with it. (An a,e,i,o, or u)

The two words don’t have similar letters yet have a similar definition and meaning, which gives them a connection. The word eye in Hebrew also means: sight, look, appearance, aperture and hole.

In the case of eyes, these holes, apertures or wells, give a glimpse into the real person inside the physical body. It is the only eternal part of us that is visible; whether we call it soul, spirit or combination of both. Eye contact is one of the ways we communicate one to another without needing to speak words.

Eye is made plural in Hebrew by adding IM; as in, the eyes of the Lord.

Springs are usually associated with wells or places where water naturally springs up from the ground. In Biblical times, many springs were protected and enclosed, because they were very important for the survival of both the shepherds and their flocks. Jesus/Yeshuas’ reference to these things in His teaching, was due to the prevailing culture and lifestyle and the everyday things which people could understand by association.

We do not see the same significance in quite the same way today, because of the modern society in which we live and the conveniences which we have the privilege of using.

Jesus/Yeshua’s reference to Himself being the living water and also referring to being a well springing up to eternal life; take on another deeper meaning in considering the ancient lifestyles.

It is not without significance that women were the water bearers. Women are the bringers forth of life. They are the ones whose waters break and gush forth, introducing the next generation from the place of our hiding.

The fact that it is women who seek out and provide that life giving and life sustaining water, for both human and animal consumption; is an important token of their role and priority in God’s creation and order. Water is the one thing we cannot live without for more than 3 days and is 75%+ of our physical makeup.

Wells, pools and springs are mentioned many times in numerous scriptures and connected to many significant events in history; mainly because a well was the place of, and source of, life giving water, in a land that had so much dry desert and barren earth.

There were often disputes and sabotage was inflicted on wells that had been dug. Ownership of them was key to the livelihood and prosperity of those who lived locally, or those who needed to access to water when driving herds across parched desert terrain.

Most travel routes followed a path that had wells along the WAY for obvious practical reasons.

Hebrew: באר יעקב ‎, Be’er Yaaqov;

Also known as Jacob’s fountain and Well of Sychar, it is a deep well hewn out of solid rock that has been associated in religious tradition with Jacob for roughly two millennia, either because it was handed down by tradition that he dug it, or because it was near to the land which he gave to Joseph. Genesis 33:19; 47:22; Joshua 24:32.

Abrahams well at Beersheba is connected to Hagar and Ishmael.

Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder; and gave her the child, and sent her away. She departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.

Gen. 21:17-19, 30-31.

Hebrew: בְּאֵר שֶׁבַע Be’er Sheva biblical town of southern Israel, now a city and the main centre of the Negev (ha-Negev) region.

It was because of a well that Beersheba first appeared on the pages of biblical history.

Abraham paid the price of seven ewe lambs to secure ownership of a well at Beersheba.

The site takes its name from the phrase:

the well of the seven

the place of swearing by 7 lambs

or well of oath.

Beersheba is first mentioned as the site where Abraham, founder of the Jewish people, made a covenant with the Philistine king Abimelech of Gerar. (Genesis 21:25-34).

Beersheba is at the southern tip of Israel. It is the last piece of fertile land before the forbidding Negev Desert. Here, travelers in ancient times would water their animals before they entered the blistering heat of the desert. Beersheba in the south and Dan in the north: these two cities stood at either end of the land of the Bible.

Rachel was at the well because every afternoon, she watered her flock of sheep at this well near Haran, an outpost of the ancient city of Ur.

Rachel in Hebrew: רָחֵל ‎ Rāḥêl, meaning: ‘ewe’, female sheep. (resh, hey, lamed).

Stone wells with wooden buckets were covered with a broad flat stone, too large for one man to move. (Was there supernatural help for this action?)

The symbolic significance of this fact is that the connection to Rachel, who was about to appear at the well, would not be a natural and simple one, but rather would require enormous effort in order to uncover the well and to draw its waters, that is, in a symbolic meaning, to make Rachel become Jacob’s wife and the mother of his children.

Jacob saw Rachel with his uncle Laban’s flock, he went to the well, rolled the stone back, and watered the sheep. Genesis 29:1-7

Jacob was sent by his father Isaac to find a wife from a relative‘s family. He met Rachel at the well and for him, it was love at first sight. He went to the well and single-handily moved the great stone cover off of the well.

There is a likeness here to the stone being rolled away supernaturally from the tomb of Messiah; and the living water of eternal life that flowed from His resurrected life.

 Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.   2  And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, see, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was on the well’s mouth.

7 “Look,” said Jacob, “it is still broad daylight; it is not yet time to gather the livestock. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.” 8 But they replied, “We cannot, until all the flocks have been gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well.

So here are some thoughts:

Eyes/ayin we see with our eyes.

We have both natural and spiritual sight.

Spiritual sight is given by Ruach Hakodesh.

Ruach HaKodesh is often associated with water and a wellspring of life from within. This inner flow enhances our spiritual eyesight.

And as we noted earlier according to Strongs and the Hebrew lexicon, the word for eye, ayin, can also mean spring, as in a source of ground water.

So there does seem to be a connection.

We say that scripture is the WORD of God and also Jesus/Yeshua is Himself the WORD. The Word or scripture itself, is associated with water, washing of the water of the Word, which renews our mind. (Eph. 5:26; Rom.12:2)

He said, eat and drink of Me. It has the meaning of spiritual drinking, from the waters springing up into eternal life. John 4:14

Miriam was seen as the water source the spiritual rock they drank from that was Christ.

and all drank the same spiritual drink; for they long drank the water that flowed from the spiritual rock that went with them–and that rock was the Christ. 1Cor. 10:4

There are also many springs that became pools where ritual cleansing took place. Settlements usually formed around water sources, later developing into large cities over time especially those on trade routes.

So water, wells, pools, springs, and eyes and spiritual elements are connected.

There’s a reference to the Pools of Heshbon in Song of Songs/Song of Solomon,

where he likens his love’s eyes to the pools of Heshbon, which refers to the magnificent fish-pools of Heshbon.

Song 7:4. The eyes of the Shulammite. 

 ‘Your eyes are like the sparkling pools in Heshbon by the gate of Bath-rabbim.’

Here we find pool, water, eyes, and fish are connected in this Song.

There is a metaphysical meaning to the phrase: eyes like sparking pools of Heshbon.

This speaks of great intelligence, light, and understanding, of which the eyes are the outer organs. The eyes shine in beauty and brilliance according to the depths of true spiritual sight, the very light of life, which is realized in consciousness.

The beauty of the pool is in its power of reflection, which the turbulent roaring of the seas and oceans constantly moving with their great heaving tides, are not calm enough to reflect anything but the color of the skies above. Neither are sweeping rivers, muddy and always swirling downward, they too are never still enough.

There is also a connection to eyes in the story of Leah in Genesis 29:17 as follows: Leah was tender eyed;

the Torah describes her eyes as soft from weeping.

Or one translation says she had watery eyes. Some translations say weak, or showing a sorrowing soul, watery or tearful eyes. Some scholars say her eyes were blue or blue/green, which were unusual to the brown eyed people of the middle eastern countries. (Leah tender-eyed—that is, soft blue eyes—thought a blemish.)

Leah’s bleared eyes would be regarded in the East as a great defect, just as bright eyes were much admired. (See 1Samuel 16:12, where David is described as fair of eyes.)

Leah’s face was not ugly, however its possible that her eyes were not clear and lustrous, dark and sparkling, rather they were weak or soft, wanting in clearness and brilliancy; as in all probability Rachel’s were.

Blue is obviously the color as that we see reflected in water. Blue eyes are known to be less strong than brown, especially in bright sunlight, and they would have looked watery in color, compared to dark brown eyes. It may also have been the reason for the term, tender, where we use the word sensitive or delicate.

There is strong connection with women and wells and water and these were some of the women who went above and beyond;

among them:

Hagar

Samaritan Woman

Rachel

Rebekah

Miriam ’s Well (Be’erah shel Miriam), is the name of the spring that miraculously provided water and accompanied the Israelites throughout the 40 years they traveled in the wilderness.

The Hebrew letter ע  Ayin has a value of 70, which stands for appointed times, as defined by Leviticus 23:2. Also Seventy, (70) elders were appointed by Moses. (Numbers 11:16)

There are 70 specially appointed times for holy days, called HaMoyadim, (ha mow ya dimm), in a year.

The 70 specific appointed times in the Jewish calendar are:

52 weekly Sabbaths each year.

Passover Week includes seven feast days.

Then there’s Shavuot (Pentecost),

Yom Teruah (Feast of Trumpets),

Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement),

and the seven days of

Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles).

The end of Sukkot is celebrated by Shemini Atzeret, the eighth-day assembly.

When all these are added together, there’s a total of 70 appointed times/HaMoyadim.

So it could be said that each spring/eye/ayin was an appointed time at the well!

Yod/Yud/Yood: arm

= A strong arm giving life.

The connection for the samaritan woman was that she knew and believed in a coming Messiah; and also understood the need for water to sustain life and Jesus/Yeshua joined the 2 together for her.

This was a story beyond that of a thirsty man, it was God reaching out across a great divide, over the thick high walls of resentment and mistrust that separated Jesus/Yeshua the Messiah from one Samaritan Woman. 

It’s a story of walls of separation and they were about to not only be breached but come tumbling down!

In those days, many of the Jews despised Gentiles/Goyim/Heathen; however, in their thinking, if there was anything worse than a Gentile, it was a Samaritan and there wasn’t much worse than a Samaritan, unless it was a Samaritan woman. Jews of this time, for reasons related to Jewish purity laws, considered Samaritan women to be in a constant state of ceremonial uncleanness. Jewish men would literally have crossed the street to avoid physical contact with a Samaritan woman. 

Jews and Samaritans hated each other, the way only people who are close to each other can hate each other, especially if religious differences are involved. The Samaritans and Jews shared a common ancestry, each side claiming to be the true descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who were worshipping God in the proper way, in the proper place, with the proper rituals. At one time or another each party became offensive and sometimes violent while expressing their differences. The rivalry was bitter, and sometimes deadly. Around 400 B.C. during the time of Pesach/Passover, the Samaritans polluted the temple in Jerusalem by scattering parts of dead bodies all over the temple grounds.

Some time later the Jews attacked and destroyed the Samaritan temple on Mt. Gerazim.

At the time when Jacob first met Rachel the Jews and Samaritans were one people. They shared a common faith, a common heritage and a common devotion to Yahweh.

These background facts help explain the woman’s obvious surprise when Jesus/Yeshua asked her for a drink. Her knowledge of the history between their people must have made her wonder if this was a cruel joke? It explains the level of suspicion and skepticism that the woman had toward Jesus/Yeshuua, challenging Him as the conversation unfolds. “How can you (a Jewish man) ask me (a Samaritan woman) for a drink?” And then Jesus replies in this way: “If you knew the gift of God, and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

He replied in such a way as to arouse her natural human curiosity, He was reaching out, by saying that it was not so much that He needed a drink, but that He’d like to give her a drink. He was building a bridge. Inviting her to partake of the water of chaim that only He could offer and provide. To the woman, it probably seems like just one more example of the Jews claiming religious superiority, which was evident in the national and religious pride in her response.

It is important to note that all of this took place at about the sixth hour. That’s midday. 12 o’clock, Noon. This is the time when the intensity of the sun would be the greatest and would not be the normal time to draw water. Water would be drawn preferably in the morning or the evening, when the sun would not be so hot. We are informed in Genesis 24:11: “It was toward evening, the time when the women go out to draw water.” So why was this woman at the well drawing water at noon?

The simple answer is, she came at a time when no one else would normally be there.

To her, bearing the sun’s heat would not be as bad as bearing the disapproval of the community. Having to hear the things they would say, and getting the looks she would undoubtedly get, was preferable to the hot sun. Her background and lifestyle separated her from her others and worse than that, it separated her from God.

The Bible reveals that sin separates us from God, that it cuts us off from the source of light/awr and life/chaim. It’s a foundational truth, but unpleasant as it may be, maybe it’s a foundational truth, that needs to be continually repeated. Sometimes we may all need to be reminded that the gospel which Jesus/Yeshua preached was a declaration, an invitation and a choice:

“The time has come! The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news.” Messiah didn’t offer peace and pardon without repentance. The road to eternal life/chaim can only begin with repentance.

King Davids WELL in Bethlehem… Is there a lock and chain on our inner well?

When Jesus/Yeshua invited people to be His disciples, He didn’t tell them that they had to be perfect before they could even think about following Him.

However, the very heart of discipleship is our willingness to be transformed by God’s grace. The way we move forward in discipleship and maturity is:

by letting go of the things we love more than we love God.

Notice at the end of her encounter with Messiah, she has completely forgotten the purpose for which she came to the well, because she has found a new and greater purpose in her life.

Because of the Samaritan woman who was at the well, the WAY was opened for non Jews to be saved.

This was a place of life giving water, a place of drinking, of meeting. A very important place because it was a source of life and it became a place to receive the living water of chaim-lifes, phyisical and spiritual. A place of joy, which followed, springing up with the living waters.

Indeed, the water that I shall give him will become in him a well of water springing up into eternal life. John 4:14

Wells are often beside pools – בריכות, which were places of cleansing and healing/

A pool is defined as a small and rather deep collection of (usually) fresh water, as one supplied by a spring, or occurring in the course of a stream; a reservoir for water.

The name of one famous pool in scripture is Bethesda and it occurs only once in the Bible.

It was the Hebrew name of a pool, reservoir or tank, with five porches, referenced in John 5:2; located near the Sheep Gate, or market, in Jerusalem.

Periodically, an angel of the Lord descended and stirred the water. When that happened, the first person to plunge into the pool would be healed of whatever affliction this person had.

The name of the pool is said to be derived from the Hebrew and/or Aramaic language. Beth hesda (בית חסד/חסדא), means either house of mercy, or the flowing water, or, house of grace.

Wells are often deep and brown eyes are sometimes referred to as deep pools and windows of the soul like looking into a well or deep pool of water. Especially in romantic descriptive narratives. This gives rise to thoughts of deep pools and wells of living water of the soul, visible through our physical eyes and the indwelling waters of chaim of Yeshua and His Ruach HaKodesh.

Are these living waters visible to those who look into our eyes?

What did the Samaritan woman see when she looked into Jesus/Yeshuas’ eyes?

She said He had nothing to draw the water with and then she drew from His well of chaim, His inner well of everlasting living waters.

His eyes were sinless and reflected eternal life, did she see the 3 chaim?

The physical necessity of natural water for the 1st chaim. The 2nd chaim of new birth, the spiritual chaim to be lived while still here on the earth yet with the waters of the Ruach springing up within? (and she knew of the coming Messiah and the promise of eternal chaim). The 3rd life/chaim, that resurrection life, and all things new in the olam/world to come.

The closest we will come to looking into sinless eyes is probably a new born baby’s innocent gaze.

And even that does not come close to what she must have seen in Messiah eyes we can only imagine ……..

They must have been the deepest pools of eternal weight of glory, mixed with compassion and unconditional love, wisdom, grace and mercy and even these words are inadequate by far.

Messiahs eyes = wells of chaim/lifes.

Wells also give a picture of depth and provision. Empty wells are used in 2 pet 2:17, to describe that which is ungodly and unprofitable, empty.

Joseph was put into a dry well by his brothers. Genesis 37:12-36 

Joseph was thrown into one by his brothers and all he would have seen was that the WAY out, was up. Joseph was thrown into a well that had run dry, lifeless and unable to sustain life or give life, just dirty dust.

It has been said that from the bottom of a well you can see the stars in the daytime??

However, in non-open daylight (that is, from a location that severely restricted the observer’s field of vision, such as the bottom of a deep well, a long chimney, or a mine shaft), Sirius itself is potentially visible during daytime; however, even for the very, very sharp-eyed, Sirius wouldn’t stand out the way typical stars do against the dark backdrop of the night sky.

We see the stars at night not because we are in darkness, but because there is no sunlight scattered in the atmosphere to drown out the starlight. Stars are much fainter than the sun. So even if we were in a deep well and couldn’t see a thing down there, the sky itself would still be in full sunlight and so we couldn’t see the stars.

However both during the day and at night, his view would have been very focused and directed at the heavens. Looking up was the only direction he could go. Upward to God, to the heavens from where His help would eventually come.

He had seen the stairway to heaven like a well looking up

Only Heaven was visible from that depth and his only exit was heaven wards almost a image of Jacobs ladder to heaven as the spirals upward beckoned to Joseph When He was released his journey took on an upward destiny.

Sometimes we may feel we are in a well and if we are, look up, for your redemption draws near – the only WAY is up.

We also call 12 midday, noon, which is also the letter N in Hebrew that means: life, seed, fish. He met the woman to build a bridge and to tear down a wall of separation between them we could say that this noon was not just the time, it was more than simply a reference to the clock but was the hour of her visitation – the time that the seed of chaim/lifes, (specifically highlighting her eternal chaim), was offered and planted into her.

What will be our response when we meet Messiah by the well at noon? What will He see in our Ayin/ayim? In the pools of our souls/spirits?

What will we see in the Ayin/ayim of Messiah, in those deep eternal wells of chaim?

As deep calls to deep let’s leave the bottom of that dry well and soar ever higher upward; to the place in the shamayim/heavenlies; up the ladder, (sullam), the highway to heaven that Jacob saw, where He has made a place for us to be seated together IN Him.

And our view from that spiritually elevated position is as far removed from the pinpoint exit of the well as we can get while still in the second stage of chaim!

May we also realize what is offered to us and may we, too, drink deeply of that living water, this day and every day. May our lives be so transformed that we can’t possibly contain the outflow of living water gushing forth from our hearts, minds and mouths.

Like the Samaritan woman, may we also have the sense not to walk away, until Jesus/Yeshua has done what He came to do. That is, until He has satisfied us with living water welling up to eternal life.

What do eye see at the bottom of our wells?

Is it the water of life springing up?

I believe with my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus/Yeshua is your Son and that He died on the cross at calvary to pay the price for my sin, so that I might be forgiven and have eternal life in the kingdom of Heaven. Father I believe that Jesus/Yeshua rose from the dead and I ask you to come into my life right now and be my personal Savior and Lord and I will worship you all the days of my life. Because your word is truth I say that I am now forgiven and born again and by faith I am washed clean with the blood of Jesus/Yeshua.
