Was Daniel Told To Shut Up?

Parts of the book of Daniel are very prophetic and are great companions to be read alongside the book of Revelation. There are tantalizing verses that make us want to know what he was told and what he knew concerning future events. Anyone who is curious about things hidden from our view will have at one time or another wondered just what were the words Daniel was told to shut up and seal in the book?

Are they connected to the sealed scroll in Revelation that only Messiah is able to open?

Obviously these not by any means the first thoughts on this text and we are not told specifically however, in the Hebrew and Aramaic meanings of the Daniel text, there are some interesting things simply offered here to ponder on.

Daniel 12:4: But thou, O Daniel shut up the words and seal the book to the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

In this verse Daniel is told very clearly, and we could say he was commanded to, ‘shut up the words’. In our modern day language when we tell someone to ‘shut up’ it is a serious request to stop talking immediately. It may be because we don’t want to hear what they are saying or that we don’t want them to reveal something to others that we have shared with them in confidence. At one time it was considered very rude to say ‘shut up’ to someone; and extremely disrespectful for a younger person to say it to an adult. These days not so much as times have changed, along with many meanings of our idioms and sayings.

The command to Daniel was in regards to

‘shut up’

the powerful words he had heard.

Shut up is sethom also spelled satham or sāṯam

Pronounced saw-tham’

סָתַם çâtham, saw-tham’; or שָׂתַם sâtham;

And the meaning is interesting:

a primitive root; to stop up; by implication, to repair;

figuratively, to keep secret:—

closed up, hidden, secret, shut out (up), stop.

“Sethom” (סֶתְהוֹם) translates to

“to conceal” or “to hide.”

It is derived from the root word that conveys the idea of

secrecy or obscurity.

סָתַם portrays deliberate closure

blocking, plugging, shutting in or shutting out.

Whether the object is a well, a city wall, a stream of prayer, or a prophetic scroll, the verb depicts intentional restraint that can be either hostile or protective, temporal or eschatological.

Daniel 12:4
HEB: וְאַתָּ֣ה דָֽנִיֵּ֗אל סְתֹ֧ם הַדְּבָרִ֛ים וַחֲתֹ֥ם
NAS: But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words
KJV: But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words,
INT: you Daniel conceal words and seal

Both Daniel 8:26, 12:4, and 12:9 employ סָתַם to describe prophetic visions kept under divine lock until “the time of the end.” The sealing does not negate comprehension for all time; it preserves the message intact until the era God appoints for full clarity. Thus Scripture affirms its own sufficiency while acknowledging progressive illumination: “many will roam to and fro, and knowledge will increase” (Daniel 12:4).

Trust sealed prophecy: what God has closed He will one day open; the church lives responsibly in the present light while anticipating fuller revelation at the consummation of Christ’s kingdom.

It has the idea of concealing vital information contained in the prophetic visions which were to be kept protected under divine lock until “the time of the end.” In todays language we might say ‘kept in protective custody.’

The picture we get is of a valuable witness being in protected custody, one who is forbidden to speak or interact with anyone until it is designated time to give testimony; which is determined by the one in authority.

Daniel is further instructed to

‘seal up the book.’

Seal up is chethom/chatham and is similar to sethom/satham the word for ‘shut up’ but goes further as

חָתַם châtham, khaw-tham’;

a primitive root; to close up; especially to seal:—make an end, mark, seal (up), stop. to seal, seal up, affix a seal.

(Qal) to seal, affix one’s seal to seal up, fasten up by sealing

(Niphal) to seal

(Piel) to lock up

(Hiphil) to be stopped

This has the picture of a document/scroll with a royal seal on it, which only the one with correct authority can open and that time is determined as, the time of the end.

What was Daniel to shut up? He was to shut up ‘the words’. The Hebrew for the words is dabar/devar and some say is equal to the Greek word rhema, with which we are familiar. The Greek word Logos means the written word, and rhema the spoken word; as in the words of the Lord God.

Debar/devar, word of God,

as a divine communication in the form of commandments, prophecy, and words of help to His people, used 394 times.

The word debar/devar is the same in Hebrew and these are

‘words from the heart,’

words that carry power;

particularly when it comes from our Heavenly Father’s heart.

This word is spelled דָּבָר

dbr:

daleth which is a picture of a doorway;

beth which as well as the picture of a house/home, pictures the heart;

and Resh which symbolizes the head/God’s power.

We can see the spiritual application of ‘words’ ‘devar/devarim’ here is: a doorway or portal to the heart of God and His power.

Daniel is commanded to ‘shut up’ these powerful ‘words’.  (Shut up in Hebrew chapters 1 and 8-13 are in Hebrew, 2-7 are in Aramaic is sethom.)

He was to shut up these words in a book, a sapar or seper סָפַר ,

which is a word for ‘book or papyrus scroll’, but it is also used to express ‘the recording of the verbal words of God’ as David did in Ps.17:4.

Daniel was to put a seal on these words that could only be opened by those who had the proper authority.

In part of this verse we read many shall run to and fro.

Many rabîm

רַבִּים

run to and fro

yᵊšōṭṭû

יְשֹׁטְטוּ

In our modern thinking, we interpret this as travelling all over the place, however in Hebrew terms it means:

from the starting point to the end point.

With this thought in mind we should ask the questions: what is this special event when these words which are to be placed into protective custody are to be spoken again, and when will the time come when someone with the right authority will unseal these words?  In the same verse we are informed it is the time of the end

Here the word end is קֵץ Qes which has the idea of

reaching it’s limits,

the end of time,

when time reaches it’s limits;

qes קֵץ the end of time and space.

In the text: ‘When knowledge will increase’ we interpret as todays information highways, such as the world wide web/internet, where a plethora of information on any subject is available; but is that what this verse means?

Included below is an interesting observation from the ancient Hebrew sages who teach this possibility and it certainly gives us something to think about. Let the reader decide.

There is much Hebraic/Jewish literature and the writings of rabbis and torah teachers available, and they have been studying the scriptures for many many decades. And apparently some of the Sages teach that time is like a corkscrew that starts at a wide bottom and narrows as it gets to the top. (Think of a tornado shaped corkscrew like swirling water but inverted, like in the picture below.)

Is this is why at the time of Noah men live to be hundreds of years old where today the life span is under 100?  As Einstein pointed out time is relative.  A 900 year old man during Noah’s time is like a 90 year old man today because that corkscrew of time gets narrower as you get closer to the top?

The sages teach that doorways/portals are opening as time journeys to the apex and these doorways/portals create some similar major event. i.e. A similar portal will open creating a similar event in history. They say that one example is the abomination of desolation as this has occurred many times in history.  It is a recurring event and viewed as a recurring portal.  Only as the corkscrew of time narrows, these events get closer together until it reaches the point where the events are almost parallel to each other.

Is that why Yeshua/Jesus said in the last days there shall be wars and rumors of wars. There has always been wars and rumors of wars, but perhaps He is referring to this reoccurring of events that are opening portals closer to each other?

Does this infer that many running to and fro, or from the starting point to the end point, which is expressing the idea that the recurring time has come so close to the top of the corkscrew where all tangent point come together; that man will move from one doorway/portal to the other doorway/portal in the span of just one life time.  Whereas in the past it would take a dozen lifetimes, or a half dozen lifetimes and maybe three lifetimes, then two and finally one life time to see an event reoccur?

Increase in wars and rumors of wars, increase in earthquakes, and natural disasters is a natural result of the corkscrew of time narrowing and a sign that time is about to reach it’s apex, or the tip, or the end. Or what we call time compression, which is events pressing in on each other and increasing in momentum, a little like an unstoppable snowball gathering mass and speed as it hurtles downhill?

And when this happens, knowledge will increase?

The word knowledge “yada” יָדַע

and represents: a knowledge of God.

daat knowledge

Hebrew Scriptures show that each generation builds upon the knowledge of God from the former generation, with greater knowledge being added to the new generation.  When humankind reaches that tip of the corkscrew or the end of time, they will have reached that level of knowledge of God where they can then hear the testimony which has been shut up or satham.

The above paragraphs on what the sages teach is offered only as food for thought… as we are all students of the Word of YHVH and no one has it all. There is so much we do not know about the creator of the universe and all of His creation and how it all exists and is connected.

None of us can say what is beyond our realm of understanding…. But one day we will know what those words were that were

‘shut up’

and

just maybe we are closer to qes than we think….

Keep looking up…

Mish-pa-KHa,

friends, visitors and every reader…

Please don’t leave this page before making certain you are His

and are truly born again from above.

Know of a certainty that Jesus/Yeshua is

your Redeemer, Savior, Lord

and soon returning King

and that you have a personal relationship with Him.

You are greatly loved and precious in His sight.

It’s all about Life and Relationship, not Religion.

NOT SURE? YOU CAN BE..

SAY THE FOLLOWING FROM YOUR HEART RIGHT NOW…

Heavenly Father I come to you in the Name of Jesus asking for forgiveness of my sins for which I am truly sorry.

I repent of them all and turn away from my past.

I believe with my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus is your Son and that He died on the cross at calvary to pay the price for my sin, so that I might be forgiven and have eternal life in the kingdom of Heaven. Father I believe that Jesus rose from the dead and I ask you to come into my life right now and be my personal Savior and Lord and I will worship you all the days of my life. Because your word is truth I say that I am now forgiven and born again and by faith I am washed clean with the blood of Jesus.  Thank you that you have accepted me into your family in Jesus’ name. Amen.

A New Commandment?

When Messiah said in John 13:34-35 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples.

Was it really a new commandment?

Or ….was He reaffirming what all Israelites already knew?

Many say this phrase signifies a pivotal moment in Messiah’s teachings, highlighting the introduction of a commandment that transcends the existing Mosaic Law….. but did it?

Because Yeshua/Jesus said the Word of God would never pass away! So how could that be?

In Matthew 5:17 (NKJV), Yeshua declares, “Do not think that I came to destroy the (Mosaic) Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” Yeshua/Jesus fulfilled the law in several ways and this statement indicates that the Torah/Law will remain until its purposes are fully realized and completed according to the Fathers plans and purposes.

First we must remind ourselves that He was speaking to Jewish people who only had the TaNaKH, what we call the Old Testament or Covenant and it included the Torah first 5 books of the Bible also called the books of Moses. The New Testament was not yet written.

We are remiss if we do not encompass the whole Word of God, all Scripture, when we try to interpret what it means or what Messiah was teaching.

Yeshua/Jesus is asked what the greatest commandment is, and He answers that you should love the Lord God with all your heart.  He was quoting a verse that was quoted every day by every orthodox Jew in his morning prayer which is Deuteronomy 6:5.

In these verses in Mark 12:30-31, He says And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.  And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandments greater than these.

In Deuteronomy 6:5 the word love is ahav, (sometimes spelled ahab.) אָהַב which is a standard word for love in Hebrew.

Then Yeshua/Jesus quotes Leviticus 19:18 where we are to love our neighbors as ourselves.

“You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.”

Recall the question was asked of Him… who is my neighbor in Luke 10:25-37 and the parable of the good Samaritan.

Messiah points to our neighbor being whoever we come across in daily life that we can lovingly assist, just as we would need help.

Again the Hebrew text uses the word ahav.

אָהַב

In 2 John 4-6 John refers to the already known Torah scriptures (Old Testament).

I found some of your children disciples living in truth just as the father commanded us.

Also other references:

Matthew 22:39
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Mark 12:31
The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

Luke 10:27
He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Romans 13:9
The commandments “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” “Do not covet,” and any other commandments, are summed up in this one decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Galatians 5:14
The entire law is fulfilled in a single decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

James 2:8
If you really fulfill the royal law stated in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.

Matthew 5:43-44
You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor’ and ‘Hate your enemy.’ / But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

1 John 4:21
And we have this commandment from Him: Whoever loves God must love his brother as well.

1 John 3:11
This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another.

John 13:34
A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another.

Ahav/love in the messianic community is linked to obedience to God verse 5 as seen in the V’Ahavta the scripture that follows after the shema (Hear O Israel…) in Deuteronomy/D’varim. And you shall love God with all your heart soul and mind and strength and your neighbor as yourselves . So John/Yochanan, exhorts us in v6 to live by it. Deuteronomy 11:13-21.

The prayer that called ” V’ahavta ” is actually the continuation of the Sh’ma/Shema. Traditionally, the Sh’ma consists of three biblical passages from the Torah:

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Deuteronomy 11:13-21

Numbers 15:37-41

So we are beginning to understand this is

not a new commandment,

as in a commandment never known before.

Another factor that we sometimes forget in reading and studying our English translations is that Yeshua/Jesus was not speaking in English, He was speaking a Northern Galilean dialect of Aramaic, which although a sister language of the Hebrew, is still a different language. Classical Hebrew has only about 7,500 words, Aramaic has many more words, so it is a more comprehensive language. This means that one word in Hebrew can have a very broad range of meanings and when one uses such a word in the Aramaic language, there is a variety to choose from.  In the Aramaic text, the Peshitta, the language that Messiah spoke, He uses two different words for love in order to express the ancient classical Hebrew word ahav/love. Yeshua/Jesus was taking advantage of the broader language of Aramaic and there is a very subtle change of words, a little play on words here that He was using.

Again we have to realize the extreme orthodox religious Pharisees and Scribes were trying to catch Yeshua out in His teaching and they were really dealing with an age-old question. If you ahav /love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, then how can you have the same love/ahav for others?

It would seem logical that if we give our Heavenly Father such priority in our love we must love others less than God because we cannot love God and man equally. They were asking in other words, is a man to love his wife and children more than God, equally as God, or less than He loves God?

So Yeshua/Jesus didn’t misquote the Old Testament/Torah/TaNaKH, He only clarified it for the understanding of the scribes.

When Messiah, speaking in Aramaic, answered their question, it should be a helpful insight for us in understanding this text because He used two different Aramaic words; which both are equivalent to the Hebrew word love/ahav but give a better understanding of love/ahav.  If these Aramaic words were translated into Hebrew, one would most likely use the single Hebrew word ahav.  However in reference to loving God/our Heavenly Father with all your heart, Yeshua/Jesus used the word racham, which is to love someone as much as they love you. This is the word David used in Psalms 18:1 when he said he loved God and it is a love which is only possible with God/our Heavenly Father.

This is a love that is reciprocated and is a love that is equal to the love that is given, which infers that we are to love God our Heavenly Father, as much as He loves us.  This meaning aligns with the Hebrew word ahav.

Messiah did not misquote the Old Testament/Torah commandments; He only used the broader Aramaic language to give a greater depth to its meanings, clarifying it for the understanding of the scribes who were questioning Him.

For Further References:

(We are to love our Heavenly Father like He loves us, only with Him loving us it’s used in an intensive form of the language; where we are loving Him it’s used only in the Aramaic as a Pael, (similar to the Hebrew Qal, simple verbal form) and in a Pael or Qal form, racham/love is a love that is like Hebrew ahav in a Piel (intensive form. (Piel is Peal in Aramaic.)

Messiah used the Aramaic word chav with reference to ‘loving your neighbor,’ chav is very similar to the Hebrew word ahav; the difference is the use of a letter Chet rather than a letter Hei. Here He was using a little play on words that a scribe would quickly notice. Chav is spelled Chet, Beth which is a Semitic root word that is found in most ancient Semitic languages and it has its origins in the descriptive image of a stick burning in a fire.  Because of this reference, Chav has been used both for a stick and/or for kindling of a fire and put together, chav is (like) a kindling love.

Kindling is commonly used to start a fire and anyone who has the need to build one begins by using small twigs, and then adding larger sticks as the fire begins to burn. It’s all started from some little chav – חב/twigs/kindling, and those twigs will catch fire and begin to burning the bigger branches.

Because He already loves us, loving our Heavenly Father is easy as we simply need to return that love, but sometimes its not so easy to love our neighbor. In the beginning they often don’t love us, and that’s why Messiah used the word chav and not racham (Strongs#7356) with the command to love our neighbors.  We are to love our neighbor when they don’t love us or even really know us, as in the story of the good Samaritan.

If when our neighbors resist our love, we will not give up, we’ll be like chav, the little twigs that keep burning and catch alight the bigger sticks. That’s what we are called to be, a continual action, being doers of the word and love our neighbors with a kindling love.

It is evident that loving our Heavenly Father and our neighbor is not a new commandment in itself, rather one we needed a deeper understanding of; and maybe a new way to approach something we may have found difficult to do, if not impossible at times. It may be also helpful to realize that we are to first love ourselves with that same chav/kindling love, and the source of that chav/kindling is the racham/love we share with our Heavenly Father.

Have Holy Days Become Just Holidays?

This time of the year is notorious for people being busier than normal.

In USA the nation celebrates Thanksgiving on 27th November. It causes an increase in travel, preparations for visitors and buying food to feed the families that reunite every year. Decorations for the day are an added project, along with cooking and serving a large turkey meal.

In less than one month preparations for Christmas celebrations begin. This time with added expense of gifts which are exchanged. The debts begin to mount up along with the stress. Around the world where Christians remember and celebrate the birth of Messiah, Christmas is a big event; and yet it spawns the opposite of what part of the angels message in Luke 2:14 was …. “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth PEACE, goodwill toward men!”

For many families, shalom/peace is the last thing that describes this time of the year. The Holy Days have transitioned into simply holidays just like the word itself.

We are not to forget the original reason for these celebrations by getting caught up in gift giving and days of over eating, which seems to have expanded to include the New Year as well. For new readers it must be mentioned here that December 25th is probably not when Messiah was born; and Western New Year celebration is very pagan in origin, as the Gregorian calendar is not the same as the Hebrew one. We have looked at these subjects in previous posts. However back to the shalom/peace the angels spoke of, in context: And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

This peace/shalom seems to be in short supply during these winter festivities, as the focus moves further and further away from the birth of our beloved Messiah.

The priest Zechariah saw in the birth of Messiah the coming of God’s light “to guide our feet into the path of peace”. Luke 1:79.

Isaiah 9:6-7
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. / Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

He is the Prince of Peace the Sar Shalom and in the Hebrew word Shalom is the fullness of all that is missing from our lives. When two Jewish people meet, they greet each other with “Shalom,” and when they depart, they also say, “Shalom.” shalom – שׁלום comes from the root: sh-l-m, which means: to be complete, sound, or whole, denoting wholeness or completeness,

Along with peace, it means much more than the absence of war or other disturbances. The word carries the ideas of health, prosperity, safety, completeness, harmony, and fulfillment. It speaks of a full and satisfying life.

Shalom does not describe just the absence of something, (such as war or anxiety), but rather the presence of something. It’s a state of wholeness, harmony, and divine order. Shalom is what happens when everything is functioning according to our Heavenly Father’s design.

This one Hebrew word holds the key to understanding:

the heart of our Heavenly Father,

the mission of the Messiah,

and the kind of life we are called to build in partnership with Him.

Insert the full meaning of shalom/peace in the following scriptures for an amplified understanding.

Luke 19:38
Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

Matthew 5:9
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

Ephesians 2:14-18
For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has torn down the dividing wall of hostility / by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments and decrees. He did this to create in Himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace / and reconciling both of them to God in one body through the cross, by which He put to death their hostility. …

Yeshua doesn’t just give shalom. HE iS shalom. His mission was to reconcile heaven and earth, Jew and Gentile, humanity and our Heavenly Father.

Colossians 1:19-20
For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, / and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross.

Romans 5:1
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

Hebrews 13:20-21
Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, / equip you with every good thing to do His will. And may He accomplish in us what is pleasing in His sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Isaiah 57:19
bringing praise to their lips. Peace, peace to those far and near,” says the LORD, “and I will heal them.”

Psalm 29:11
The LORD gives His people strength; the LORD blesses His people with peace.

Micah 5:5
And He will be our peace when Assyria invades our land and tramples our citadels. We will raise against it seven shepherds, even eight leaders of men.

Zechariah 9:9-10
Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. / And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem, and the bow of war will be broken. Then He will proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion will extend from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates to the ends of the earth.

Romans 15:13
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

1 Peter 1:2
according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance

When Yeshua appeared to His disciples after the resurrection, His first words were “Shalom aleichem,” which means, “Peace be upon you.” He wasn’t just offering comfort; He was announcing victory because through His death and resurrection, the broken relationship and loss of shalom/peace between Father God and humanity was healed. The curse was reversed and true shalom had been made possible again.

When Yeshua speaks shalom/peace… He creates shalom/peace because the words that He speaks are always spirit – ruach and life- chaim.

We should ask ourselves have we ever truly received what Yeshua speaks?

My peace/shalom I GIVE to you ….. GIVE is in the present tense – NOT in a past or future tense…it’s Now. Now faith, today, this moment. This peace/shalom comes from looking into His face and fully understanding and receiving His quiet contentment in the fullness of its Hebrew meaning.

Reflecting His shalom/peace is proof that we are in right relationship with our Heavenly Father because we are exhibiting the freedom to turn our minds to Him. If we are not right with the Father we can never turn our mind anywhere but on ourselves. Allowing anything to hide the face of Messiah Yeshua/Jesus from us either causes us to become troubled, or gives us a false sense of security.

When we communicate with Yeshua confusion stops. We are troubled when we don’t take Him into account. In Him there is no confusion. We are to do as Hebrews 12:2 says: looking unto Jesus and receive His Peace/Shalom as He creates it for us. If we try to worry our way out of a problem we destroy His effectiveness in us. As He walks toward us on the waters of the sorrows of our lives, we will hear His voice calling our name above the sound of the storm saying: Peace/Shalom.. Be still…Be still and know that I am God. When we are tempted to despair or be anxious in a present difficult situation, when everything seems chaotic and the pressures of life seem to overwhelm us…we are to remember Phil. 4:6 and …. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace/shalom of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

It is all part of our Heavenly Fathers plan and He is working out the details of the circumstances so that He can bless us and reveal Himself to us in a new way.

This ‘busy-ness’ we tend to fall into, reminds us of the account of Martha and Mary in Luke 10:42 as Messiah asks us the same question:

What is most important to you?

Living in shalom/peace means much more than feeling calm during chaos. It’s a lifestyle of alignment with our Heavenly Father’s purposes in every area of life—spiritual, emotional, relational, and physical.

Some practical expressions of shalom:

In the area of reconciliation by repairing relationships and avoiding conflict.

In generosity by sharing resources so that no one lacks what they need.

For justice by standing against systems that oppress or devalue others.

On Shabbat/Sabbath by making time and space for rest and renewal which is the rhythm of creation itself.

By displaying integrity in living whole and being the same person in private and in public.

In the ancient world, when people greeted one another with shalom, they weren’t saying, ‘I hope you’re relaxed.’ They were declaring, ‘I desire for your life to be whole.’

Yeshua’s central message was the Kingdom of God. And His Kingdom is the ultimate expression of shalom/peace: The rule of our Heavenly Father bringing order and wholeness to a broken world.

In Hebrew thought, peace/shalom is never separated from justice. As Isaiah 32:17says,

“The work of righteousness will be peace (shalom), and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.”

That’s why shalom -peace and tzedek righteousness, always go together, hand in hand. When He reigns, peace and righteousness kiss. Psalm 85:10. For followers of Yeshua, pursuing shalom means joining His mission to bring heaven’s order into the chaos of earth.

“You keep him in perfect peace (shalom shalom) whose mind is stayed on You.”

That double expression, shalom shalom, suggests complete peace: peace with our Heavenly Father, within ourselves, and with others. It’s a reminder that divine wholeness begins in the heart and radiates outward.

During these ‘holydays,’ may the shalom/peace of our Heavenly Father replace all chaos, worry, anxiety and stress and fill our hearts and minds in Messiah with nothing missing, nothing broken, complete, wholeness in body, mind, and spirit.

Shalom, I give you, Shalom, I leave with you.

Amen.

Show Me The Way

Last post we looked at how we are to

wait patiently for the Lord in all things…

There are many instances in the scriptures where individuals have asked the Lord to give them signs or to confirm direction, action and clear instruction on how to proceed along the Way. Some examples are: Gideon, David, Moses, Eliezer, etc.

This is not something they did all the time, only when they were not sure about a decision they had to make in a particular situation. The human mind and heart can be deceiving, and the blessing is that we can ask our Heavenly Father to confirm to us, if the decision we are about to make is the right one.

However, as general guidance for disciples of Messiah who are filled with His Holy Spirit, who walk by faith and not by sight, we should not need visual aids every time to confirm our leading from His Spirit. Yet sometimes we treat the Lord like some kind of game we play, ignoring His response until we get the answer we want. We think that blending our situation together with our prayers the Lord will somehow give us a sign, something on which to hang our hopes…

Why is that?

Is it because we are having difficulty in hearing Him?

In Genesis 23:1 – 25:18 we read the account of how Eliezer found a wife for Isaac by seemingly giving the Lord conditions and instructions for Him to make it obvious who was to be the bride for Isaac.

But was it Eliezer who made up this situation with its consequences, or was it all predetermined because His answer came immediately? In fact, the Creator of the Universe had prepared the answer even before it was requested because His plan was already in motion.

Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her water jar on her shoulder. Gen. 24:15.

There is a huge difference between snatching for answers in things that occur randomly or in self-fulfilling prophecies, and truly being directed by the Holy Spirit of our Heavenly Father. He can and does guide us by giving us specific signs to follow. The question is do we know Him well enough to recognize His signs when we see them? Do we have the wisdom to follow them? All her paths are peace. Proverbs 3:17

Following a sign from Fathers’ Holy Spirit is certainly important but how can we tell the difference between the guidance of the Lord and our own thinking?

In the case of Eliezer, it was easy, even before he had finished asking the Lord his prayers were answered.

We can miss the signs and directions from our Father for many reasons but the most likely reason is that we have already made up our minds about the way we think things should go!

We should probably allow our Heavenly Father to show us His way first, because it will without doubt be better than any plan we can formulate. When we ask Him for direction in our life and it seems like our prayers aren’t even being heard, let’s remember how easy it was for Eliezer, Abrahams’ servant.

In Matthew 6:7-8  it says that our Heavenly Father knows our request even before we ask it. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Also in Psalms 139:1-4 we read:  O LORD, you have searched me and known me!  You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.  You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.  Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.

Maybe the reason we have so much trouble discerning answers from the Lord is that we’re praying with pre-laid plans in our head. Isn’t it possible that the creator of the entire universe might have something else in mind? While it is wise to plan and prepare, we must recognize that God’s sovereignty ultimately guides our lives. Our plans should be made with humility and openness to His direction.

Proverbs 16:9 A man’s heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps. NKJV.

Amplified Bible
A man’s mind plans his way [as he journeys through life], But the LORD directs his steps and establishes them.

When our prayers seem to go unanswered we are quick to grumble and complain, however, the times when our Heavenly Father answers clearly we are quick to thank and bless Him with worship and praise. We should be sure not to forget the Lord until the next time we want something from Him.

Answered prayer is one way that our loving Heavenly Father shows His provision, kindness and faithfulness toward us. It proves that He not only cares enough about the needs in our daily lives but He is both the directing compass and the hope of our final destination on this journey we call life. So when He faithfully responds to our prayer requests, let’s not forget to be faithful to Him in return.

Jeremiah 10:23
I know, O LORD, that a man’s way is not his own; no one who walks directs his own steps.

Psalm 37:23-24
The steps of a man are ordered by the LORD who takes delight in his journey. / Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed, for the LORD is holding his hand.

Lets bless His name because He alone is worthy of our worship and let’s ask Him to teach us to run to Him only in prayer when we are in need. As His servant let’s allow Him to show us His signs and teach us to know His ways.

James 4:13-15
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.”  You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. /Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.”

Proverbs 19:21
Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose of the LORD will prevail.

Maybe its time to ask our Heavenly Father to help us to not set our minds according to our own desires but to clearly see His hand of loving-kindness.

Ephesians 1:11
In Him we were also chosen as God’s own, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything by the counsel of His will..

Philippians 2:13
For it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good purpose…

And one thing we can be sure of is that His leading will always be in agreement with His written Word, because that will never be in opposition to the Fathers will; and is always final confirmation to any decision.

The Way of peace, true shalom is the final umpire of our hearts. Col.3:15. We need Him to show us His ways that we may follow Him all the days of our lives.
