Day of The Atonements (Repost)

Yom haKipuriym  יום הציפורים .

The  Day of the Atonements

is without doubt the Holiest day on Israels’ calendar.

This is a repeat of the original post of the same title 2 weeks ago as the first link does not seem to be working correctly.. Apologies for any confusion or for those unable to connect to the page on the site.

It is also called a

shabbat shabaton,

which is a day to stop from all kinds of work

and to rest completely.

This day also known as

Yom Kippur יום כפור

occurs only once each year,

on the 10th day of the 7th month and

it begins the evening before at sundown.

For those new to mmm and to the mo’adiym, here is a brief explanation.

The word often translated as feasts is

Mo’adiym  מועדים

pronounced moe-ah-deem

meaning: designated seasons or appointed times.

This word, Mo’adiym is the plural form of moed and is pronounced moe-ed. It can be found in passages such as

Genesis/b’reshiyt 1:14 and

Nehemiah/N’chem’yah 10:34.

Another variation of moed is mo’adai meaning:

My designated seasons or My Appointed times.

This word used in Leviticus/Vayik’ra 23

offers the clearest definition as the chapter begins with:

1. And the Lord/Adonai spake unto Moses, saying,

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the Lord, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.

Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings.

These are the feasts of the Lord, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.

as well as in passages such as

Ezra 3:5 and Y’chez’ke-el/Ezekiel 44:24.

One of the most common mis-understandings about the

Moedim /Mo’adiym

is that they are collectively called the

Lord/Adonai’s Feasts or Festivals.

Several English translations of the Scriptures are likely the origin promoting this misconception. Although most of them are festive and times of rejoicing there are others that have nothing to do with feasting and festivities whatsoever.

Yom haKipuriym

occurs nine days after Y

om Teruah/The Feast of Trumpets.

Yom Kippur : יוֹם כִּפּוּר ‎

is the holiest and most solemn day of the year, a day of fasting, confession, introspection, prayers for forgiveness, and resolve to change the direction of our lives.

Yom Kippur is a day of death –

the death of the old year,

the death of the old sins,

and the death of the old man/ego.

However it is not morbid, but rather based on the hope and prayer, that a new year will bring us into a closer walk before our Heavenly Father.

The primary feature of this Holy time is to deny self; and as the High Priest performs the main part of the days proceedings and makes the atonements for himself, the altar, the tabernacle and the whole of Israel; the people do not participate because they were forbidden to approach the holy place and were to deny their own existence/die to self, on this day.

Some Messianic Jews wonder whether or not Yom Kippur is appropriate, since those who have come to faith in Yeshua/Jesus believe that He alone is our atonement, and that our forgiveness has been eternally secured by His sacrifice, once for all time.

All Messianic believers would agree that Jesus/Yeshua‘s sacrifice has fully effected the forgiveness of sins, and that we are completely righteous in Him, needing no further atonement. However, even the writers of the Brit chadashah /ReNewed Covenant stress the need for introspection and repentance.

2 Cor 13:5.

Yom Kippur, if understood correctly, is not a day by which our atonement is realized, as much as it is a day to be reminded that our atonement was attained at great cost by our King, and that we, in so far as we have demonstrated faithlessness and rebellion in departing from His ways, must return to Him wholeheartedly, seek His forgiveness with a repentant heart, and determine to walk in His ways and statutes. Yom Kippur, then, for the Messianic believer, is a day of deep and honest reflection on the atonement which is ours in Yeshua/Jesus, and a recommitment to holy living, both before our Heavenly Father and everyone else.

If we understand it as it was given to us in the Torah, Yom Kippur enhances and strengthens our faith.

Clearly Yom HaKipuriym finds its fulfillment in Messiah Yeshua/Jesus. As both our

High Priest,  הַהֵן הַגָּדוֹל (hakohen hagadol)

and our sacrifice, He atoned for us once and for all and is continually making intercession for us before the Father.

Hebrews 7:27

Who has no day by day need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices, first of all for his own [personal] sins and then for those of the people, because He [met all the requirements and] did this once for all when He offered up Himself [as a willing sacrifice].

He does’n’t need to make sacrifices for Himself and for us year after year, in order to atone for our sins because it has already been accomplished forever.

This year (2023) Yom Kippur begins Sunday evening through Monday 25th Sept..

Let’s remember the atoning sacrifice of our Messiah!

We are to be humble, contemplative, repentant and dead to self. Remembering that we live and breathe only because the Father chooses to allow it. Our self denial does not cause or enhance our atonement, but it does allow us to become very aware of our own mortality, our sin, our need for atonement and causes us to comprehend the sacrifice made, as He denied His own life on our behalf.

Without Messiah we are truly dead, but through His atoning Blood and intercession we are truly, truly alive. The Levitical system of animal sacrifices including this one, was meant to foreshadow the true and eternal sacrifice of Messiah Jesus/Yeshua as the means of our reconciliation with the Father.

That Covenant provided a shadow of the substance which was revealed in the Renewed Covenant. Previously the sacrifices simply covered the sin, but now through Jesus/Yeshua, these sins are taken completely away and through His shed Blood we are given complete atonement before our Father.
